Wanna again welcome you to The 405 Coffee Break. Guys, you like the New Year? 2026! Get your cup of coffee, steaming hot cup of cocoa or a bottle of water. Let's see what's happening.
OK Solberg:Spring wheat $5.53 a bushel. 550lb steer calf $4.07 Butcher Hog in Iowa 55ยข a pound, and a 100lb fat lamb in Billings at $2.39. But guys, there's more, much more.
OK Solberg:Okay. Welcome back. It's the new year and we're gonna continue what we started last year. Now on Tuesday, we look back to 1964. Wednesday, it was 1965. Yesterday was 1966.
OK Solberg:So just goes without saying today it's gonna be 1967. Now look what I found on the front page of the August 31 issue from 1967. There is a big and I mean big large picture of all the teachers at the Malta Public Schools. Now I can't and I won't mention them all, but I certainly will give you the majority. Alright?
OK Solberg:First off, we have Bob Gilman, oh, which brings a story to my mind. I'll share it at the end if and I have enough time. So Bob Gilman, Mrs Swen Sven Halti, who we knew as Myrtle, Mrs Leroy Lucas, Mrs Lauren Bruckner AKA Mary Ellen, Mrs Dwayne Raymond alias Lila. Well, reminds me of another story. Sorry.
OK Solberg:Then there's Mrs Mary Cron, Janet Higgins. Oh, that reminds me of another story. Bill Ryan, Tom Moran, and Mrs Tom Moran. There stands Mrs Carl Eaton who is known as Lucille by her friends and Carol Gurnot. Mrs David Lafonde who shall be known forever as Harriet.
OK Solberg:There is Jerry Pecarney, Mrs Dale Freetag, Mrs Lou Ivanish. Oh, it doesn't end there. Here's Mrs Allen Smith, Mrs Wilma Anderson, Mrs Glenn Stickley, really? Yes. Who still resides in Malta now in 2026 and is swimming lack laps at 7AM down at the Edgewater most mornings.
OK Solberg:The list continues. Glenn Flat, Jim Nordland, Mrs Elmer Hendrickson, who Orvin remembers as Orlinda, Mrs Ken Berg, who is also still alive and answers to the name of Janet. Look at there. There stands Mr Dean Robertson, Mrs Wesley Orahood, and even Dale Edmister and Conrad Gleim. Guys, ask Tim Bullard about Mr Gleim.
OK Solberg:So that's all I have time to name. But when I started, I mentioned Bob Gillman, and it reminded me of a story that I will never forget. There is a man living today in the town of Malta who shall remain nameless for the moment, Davy Humbert and Mr Gilman had a paddle. Oh, yes. He did. It was a sturdy paddle. And if any of misbehaved in his class, he would use that paddle on your backside.
OK Solberg:Now guys I saw the paddle, it had holes drilled in it to reduce the wind resistance but I never had it applied to my backside. But this nameless man, Davy Humbert, who still resides in Malta to this day, did something in class that Mr Gillman didn't think was appropriate and he called him up to his desk.
OK Solberg:Davy, he puts his hands on the desk and Mr Gillman reeled back and smacked him hard on the backside. Well, he just stood there motionless. No. That didn't make Mr Gilman very happy. He wanted to get his attention. So he reels back a 2nd time and crack. Still nothing from the young boy.
OK Solberg:Well, Gilman wanted to win this round so he took that paddle and two hands it now. Right? He reels back and gives him the whole 9 yards. There was a crack that echoed off the back wall of that English room and the young boy, who shall remain nameless, Davy Humbert with a straight face looked at Mr Gilman and said, are you done yet?
OK Solberg:I like that story. Most students that got spanked by Mr Gilman's paddle got to sign their name. I am not sure this young lad was offered that opportunity, which leads us to our bible verse.
OK Solberg:It's from the King James version. He that spareth his rod hateth his son, but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Proverbs 13:24 The old King James. See, Mr Gilman loveth us.
OK Solberg:So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
