OB_EP 12_Oct 23 Event Season Recap
from Montreal_Transcript

00:00:00:00 - 00:00:22:00
Connor Reap
I think the in-person, the events, all that stuff is super key to partnerships. You have a great product, great team, great everything. But if you're not out here bonding with the teams, forming relationships, you're never going to really get to the top of the partnership mountain. I guess.

00:00:22:02 - 00:00:37:14
Rob Napoli
All right. Real quick, Vinny I know you got to run off for a meeting, but we're here at the Lightspeed Summit here in Montreal, the partners summit 2023. Vinny introduce yourself, because this is the first time that you've been on the podcast with us. So tell the world who you are and what you do at Omniboost.

00:00:37:16 - 00:01:07:12
Vincent Verschueren
Yeah, I'm Vincent Verschueren customer support and onboarding, taking part of the team with omniboost and dealing with to the POS to accounting integrations, all kinds of POS to accounting integrations already been working to omniboost for three years and I'm having amazing time here in the expo with Lightspeed Oxygen met a lot of people who were in the goal with previously.

00:01:07:14 - 00:01:17:00
Vincent Verschueren
It's very amazing to see the people in person and it was great to catch up and to be part of this event with the omniboost team.

00:01:17:05 - 00:01:36:17
Rob Napoli
Yeah. So what do you think about events like this? And, you've gotten to a couple of them this year. We're finishing within season. What is the most important thing that you think, What's important takeaways? What's the number one thing that you think omniboost continue to do when we go to these events? Like what is the thing that you want to accomplish every time you get to be in an event like this.

00:01:36:19 - 00:01:56:09
Vincent Verschueren
To connect more, to align and to upskill a partnership, and to bring it to another level, to, tighten the bonds and to get more benefits out of making more integrations. Scaling omniboost up to the next level.

00:01:56:11 - 00:02:02:01
Rob Napoli
Awesone Vinny, I appreciate you my guy. You got a few more meetings to run after this. So thanks for taking a quick minute here. Yeah, have a wonderful day, friend.

00:02:02:02 - 00:02:03:14
Vincent Verschueren
No problem. Take care.

00:02:03:16 - 00:02:22:11
Rob Napoli
All right. Rob Napoli, head of Brand here at Brand & Commercial at omniboost. And we're at Lightspeed Summit 2023. We've got our friend Connor Reap from Market man. And Connor I just wanted to pull you aside. I saw you coming out. I know you got a run out, but talked a lot about, you know, what market man's presence means at an event like this.

00:02:22:11 - 00:02:27:23
Rob Napoli
We think about the event ecosystem. Why is it important to be here to show up at these things?

00:02:28:00 - 00:02:32:02
Connor Reap
Yeah, absolutely. So partnerships is at the forefront of everything we do.

00:02:32:04 - 00:02:45:15
Connor Reap
And Lightspeed is at the forefront of those partnerships. So being here lightspeed is not the only partner here. Obviously, we have you guys, we have so many other partners here. So having a presence here, getting to meet with people in person, we haven't been able to do that so much over the last couple of years.

00:02:45:15 - 00:02:55:21
Connor Reap
So finally putting faces to names, not just being behind the Zoom screen and then, of course, working with you guys to really open up the ecosystem who we can work with. So very exciting.

00:02:56:01 - 00:03:13:20
Rob Napoli
Yeah, I love that. I mean, that's why I think it's so important for us to be out at events and also working together. There's so many competitors in our space and that we can work together. We against together. It's kind of ebbs and flows, but it's so important for us to collectively get together and share these insights and really think about how do we make it better, how do we create unified experiences.

00:03:13:20 - 00:03:20:23
Rob Napoli
I think that's the word that's been going around a lot experiences. So tell me before I let you go, what was your experience like here in Montreal these last couple of days?

00:03:21:00 - 00:03:26:13
Connor Reap
It's been so much fun. It's only been like, I don't know, 36 hours, but it feels like. It's been ten days.

00:03:26:13 - 00:03:48:01
Connor Reap
Like there's just been so much stuff going on, so many people to talk to, so many people to meet. But I completely agree with you. I think the in-person, the events, all that stuff is super key to partnerships. You have a great product, great team, great everything. But if you're not out here bonding with the teams, forming relationships, you're never going to really get to the top of the partnership mountain, I guess.

00:03:48:03 - 00:04:03:01
Rob Napoli
Well, hey, man, I appreciate you. I know you got to jet off, but I'll be in New York City in December, so we'll be definitely getting together. Absolutely. And we'll be definitely doing a full interview with you here in the near future my guy. I appreciate you take care appreciate to meet. Kees how are you doing my friend?

00:04:03:01 - 00:04:06:02
Kees Zorge
I'm doing quite well. Rob quite well.

00:04:07:20 - 00:04:34:12
Rob Napoli
we're here at Lightspeed Summit 2023. We're in Montreal. The event season is almost at a close. I know you got a couple more left this year. Couple just a few. But as we think about this year and all the events that omniboost have been to, you've been going to, you've been on 40 different flights this year traveling around the world, Why is it important for omniboost to have a presence at events like this partner summit here in Lightspeed in Montreal?

00:04:34:14 - 00:04:51:08
Kees Zorge
It's always good to connect with partners real life, see each other face to face, have a discussion and have a sit down and really have a decent conversation. Doesn't always. You don't always have to talk shop. It's also about getting to know each other and build a true relationship, as in a true partnership.

00:04:51:10 - 00:05:15:03
Rob Napoli
I think that's really, impactful and I think it's so easy to connect digitally connects via Zoom, all these things. But things change when you get in a room together and also when you have so many different partners and some of them play in the same space, some are partners of ours as well. But when we all get together the same room, we're thinking about the challenges that hospitality industry as a whole faces, and it allows us to be more creative in solutions.

00:05:15:03 - 00:05:21:06
Rob Napoli
And I love I think that we're in the forefront of that, I don’t know about you always been an ethos of you.

00:05:21:08 - 00:05:44:04
Kees Zorge
Imagine what we did this morning having breakfast, talk to a guy coming up with amazing solutions, networking or not even the networking part, socializing. I call it socializing where you can actually come up with new type of solutions, integrations and the likes. So the reason why we do as much travel as we do is just to really connect with the partners.

00:05:44:06 - 00:05:53:21
Kees Zorge
Yes, obviously it's cool to have your logo on screen be part of an amazing summit, but it's about the people. It definitely is about the people.

00:05:53:22 - 00:06:14:03
Rob Napoli
100% about the people. And so it's funny, like literally we are just telling the story about why it's impactful to be at events like this and to show our presence and example. He just gave us the conversation this morning over coffee and then you just walked up, so I had to pull you in really quick. Marv you have a really cool solution and we actually we walked away really excited to have a follow up conversation.

00:06:14:05 - 00:06:19:14
Rob Napoli
Tell me a little about who you are and what you're doing and your innovation for the world and why it's important for you to be at an event like this.

00:06:19:16 - 00:06:25:16
Marvin Baker
Okay, ofcourse. So I guess the first thing is I'm a bit cynical. So I arrived with.

00:06:25:18 - 00:06:28:07
Kees Zorge
I do like the cynical part of things. Definitely.

00:06:28:08 - 00:06:58:03
Marvin Baker
I arrive with very low expectations of this was kind of a box ticking. Got to come, got to show your face as a partner. And however, as I leave, I'm ridiculously excited because people that I wouldn't even think about would know about this. Potential opportunities have all come to life as if by magic. So absolutely, from an event perspective, it was brilliant in terms of what I do.

00:06:58:05 - 00:07:31:02
Marvin Baker
Well, I my unique proposition and how the fact that I was reaching out to your company at the same time as my business partner in the UK unbenowest to me was reaching out to you is we plant trees that are very simple. I've a very simple proposition. I plant trees. Well, I really do is I give diners the option to plant a tree when they dine a lightspeed restaurant and offset the carbon footprint of their meal, offset the food waste of their meal.

00:07:31:04 - 00:08:01:19
Marvin Baker
And the revenues that we generate are used to fund tree planting projects in the developing world, helping lift some of the poorest communities out of poverty. So when you are having a great time, great meal, great food, great company, hopefully, and for a small addition on your bill at £1.23, which in reality is probably around about 1%, maybe a little bit more of the bill for that, you know that this has had a positive environmental experience and a hugely impact social experience.

00:08:02:00 - 00:08:12:15
Marvin Baker
And where I see you guys coming in is the fact that what we need to do is to be integrated in as many places as possible so that we can amplify our impact.

00:08:12:18 - 00:08:16:21
Kees Zorge
Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, coming to a hotel see you soon.

00:08:16:23 - 00:08:22:16
Rob Napoli
Absolutely. And I think that's it's really cool, too, when you talk about this idea of impact.

00:08:22:18 - 00:08:27:01
Marvin Baker
Gift trees, carbon friendly dining, I suppose to put that in on a.

00:08:27:01 - 00:08:28:18
Rob Napoli
Gift Trees yeah.

00:08:28:20 - 00:08:31:06
Kees Zorge
definitely mentioning it again.

00:08:31:08 - 00:08:51:10
Rob Napoli
Yeah. It's got to be mentioned a lot too. We're going to amplify this and you know, I love that you talk about the serendipity of coming to an event like this. Even with low expectations, when you get great people in a room and collectively they're thinking about how they can improve this space, good things happen. I think that's this is a great kickstart of that.

00:08:51:10 - 00:08:56:05
Rob Napoli
It's just that synergy that happens when you're in person and

00:08:56:07 - 00:09:25:06
Marvin Baker
The unintentional. Yeah, and in fairness, although I had a low expectation, I really came with a purpose of networking and speaking to the decision makers right behind what we do in Lightspeed. Yeah, it was obviously I had no perception of any value around meeting fellow partners. Yeah, but clearly at this stage the partnerships are as important as the conversations I'm having with the Lightspeed people.

00:09:25:07 - 00:09:25:20
Kees Zorge
Totally agree with you

00:09:25:22 - 00:09:32:17
Marvin Baker
In terms of driving the business ecosystem. Gift trees.

00:09:32:19 - 00:09:34:03
Kees Zorge
Gift Tress Ladies and gentlemen.

00:09:34:05 - 00:09:49:07
Rob Napoli
Marv, we appreciate you coming on. I appreciate you just out of the blue stepping in and joining us on the podcast. I just wanted to kind of give a shout out and also talk about that serendipity. It's that serendipity of fact that makes these events so impactful. We're excited to continue the conversation and build some really cool shit together.

00:09:49:07 - 00:09:57:21
Marvin Baker
So it's been a pleasure. And if they weren't so expensive, I would be doing a micro moment as I leave alone. Well, thank you very much.

00:09:57:23 - 00:09:59:12
Kees Zorge
Appreciate it.

00:09:59:14 - 00:10:24:01
Rob Napoli
Thank you. Thank you for doing that. So awesome. All right. So we're finalizing Lightspeed oxygen, 2023 here in Montreal. I get to do this a lot, I get on this podcast and go to these events. Most people don't know who you are yet, although the world needs to know who you are because all of our partners know who you are, especially in the pos space.

00:10:24:03 - 00:10:27:11
Rob Napoli
So quickly Jasper Introduce what you do at Omniboost for us.

00:10:27:13 - 00:10:55:08
Jasper De Pooter
Yeah. So as Rob told already, my name is Jasper and I working at omniboost for three years now. A little bit more. And yeah, I'm responsible for the point of sale integrations and the mostly to BMS integration. So that means like charging to room and also for revenue, posting everything about the room and audit on the point of sale will be posted in the PMS in the management system, from the hotel and that's all uploading by our systems.

00:10:55:08 - 00:11:18:02
Jasper De Pooter
So the look up for the room. So when they enter the room number and the PMS goes to our system, we go to the PMS, we collect the rooms and we show them on the point of sale and at the moment they click on it, we got to receive coming in. We do our thing, our magic, transforming it to the right format and then we posted to the PMS and then when the guest checks out, you can pay for it and it's all seamless, integrated.

00:11:18:02 - 00:11:20:06
Jasper De Pooter
So that's what I'm responsible for it.

00:11:20:08 - 00:11:30:10
Rob Napoli
So for those that aren't super technical, man behind the magic, when we think about now, you're okay no worries.

00:11:30:12 - 00:11:31:12
Jasper De Pooter
No worries.

00:11:31:14 - 00:11:56:17
Rob Napoli
The man behind the magic. When we think about all the cool stuff we do, there's people that builds and continually build and we continue to develop. We continue to innovate within our tech stack. And so it's really cool. It's kind of highlight that a little bit, but it's also, you know, I get through a lot of events as heading out at our global commercial business.

00:11:56:19 - 00:12:12:11
Rob Napoli
They put me out in front of people a lot of time and selling and growing and stuff. But from my dev side of things, why is it impactful for you to be at these events and what is the key takeaways you have from doing something that's like being on site with a partner and getting to meet people and an event like this?

00:12:12:17 - 00:12:29:18
Jasper De Pooter
Yeah. So the cool thing about this event is yeah, that you meet the persons face to face. I always see them on Zoom, I only see them, their face is on cameras and it's really cool to talk to them in person because yeah, then you have like the emotional connection with them a bit more. And that's something what I really like.

00:12:29:20 - 00:12:51:03
Jasper De Pooter
And yeah, it's like the short lines. I really like short lines with different kind of people. For example, with lightspeed they have really short line with the technical person and if there is an issue, I send them a message and it's on. I really cool to meet those persons face to face here and yeah, really helps solving issues quite rapidly.

00:12:51:07 - 00:13:20:00
Rob Napoli
And I think you know in our industry is we're a data those that don't know us. If you're just tuning in for the first time to the hospitable or data tech company for the hospitality space and that's a a lot of things but we build a lot of integrations and having those short lines of communication, having key folks at our partner and client organization that allow us to really take things home quickly and really drive things home quickly makes a big difference.

00:13:20:00 - 00:13:35:14
Rob Napoli
And to be honest, coming here in Montreal, it's like it's Jasper Show, like everyone is. You knew everybody here that it was just it was person after person after person. People are coming up to our booths earlier just to talk to you. So that has a really cool thing and makes a big deal on why you get to be here.

00:13:35:14 - 00:13:39:13
Rob Napoli
So I appreciate you come in and also let me put you on the spot, my guy.

00:13:39:18 - 00:13:45:02
Jasper De Pooter
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No problem. No problem. And thanks that I could join this trip. It's really had a really good time.

00:13:45:04 - 00:13:47:16
Rob Napoli
All right, Joely How you doing today.

00:13:47:18 - 00:13:48:18
Joely Tennant
Good Hi.

00:13:48:22 - 00:14:02:02
Rob Napoli
Yeah, we're excited to be here at in Montreal. It's my first time at a big partner summit. A lot of stuff going on. First of all, explain to the audience who you are in your role at Lightspeed

00:14:02:04 - 00:14:11:00
Joely Tennant
HI I'm Joely. I'm the integrations manager here at Lightspeed, so I manage all of our integrations across the whole Amaya region hospitality.

00:14:11:02 - 00:14:30:23
Rob Napoli
I love that. And I've heard your name so much of this. First time getting to meet you as I joined and taking over from the online setting standpoint and looking globally. But I know all of my team has talked a lot about you and what's it like getting to, as an integrations manager, working for a huge, large global company and having to do all these partners and whatnot, What's it like getting to meet them in person?

00:14:30:23 - 00:14:34:13
Rob Napoli
Like what does it mean to be here in person this week with everybody?

00:14:34:15 - 00:15:06:06
Joely Tennant
It's fantastic. I, I think my, my voice is almost gone from introducing everyone to each other. So last night I connected the CEO of KDS company in North America with a reseller in Germany so that they could get feet on the ground and in Europe. And it's fantastic. There's nothing quite like it. I working across the media and across a lot of the globe, I have to be in touch with every single little touchpoint of which countries want which things which are useful, like things like Germany, so cash heavy.

00:15:06:06 - 00:15:24:08
Joely Tennant
So they need lots like stuff around cash there. Whereas Australia love a QR code ordering system, trying to hand out cash in Australia. It's not going to happen. So knowing all of those little tidbits just makes it so much easier to connect people. And I think the networking here, it's just made it ideal.

00:15:24:10 - 00:15:43:11
Rob Napoli
Yeah, I love that you talk a lot about, there's a big theme about localization and really knowing the audiences and Europe wide, it's small and dense. There's so much uniqueness culture that I got to live in Italy for two years and travel, so I've seen that firsthand. It's really cool that you're able to do that and now you've got to work with Omniboost a lot.

00:15:43:12 - 00:16:03:00
Rob Napoli
What's it been like? You know, I'm biased. I love our company. Obviously I work here but is a partner of ours. What's it like working with Omniboost and what is it? What do you, share with the world how it's going? Because I think it's really important for not only us to talk about ourselves, but have others share their experiences with us all.

00:16:03:01 - 00:16:29:17
Joely Tennant
Always fantastic. Omniboost is pretty much my prime definition of an ideal partner. We work together on things. The thing I hate most about some people's attitudes towards partnerships is that it can get really one sided one people, one person's winning in this. the thing I love about omniboost is we bounce ideas, we go, How can we grow together? What can we do to extend to new markets together, new industries together, new verticals as the epitome of a partnership?

00:16:29:17 - 00:16:36:10
Joely Tennant
I love sitting in a room with you guys just bouncing ideas off each other and then going, Let's make it happen.

00:16:36:12 - 00:16:55:07
Rob Napoli
I love that. And that, for those that don't know, Kees are our founder, That is him, too. It's like his brain is always thinking about that and always working that. And that's the culture we're trying to build that as we expand globally with all of our partners, we've got 75 plus countries, 3000 plus unique integrations at the tip of the globe.

00:16:55:09 - 00:17:08:05
Rob Napoli
For us, it's about how do we do it better, how to do it faster, how do we expand, how do we grow, Who do we bring in because we know we can't do it ourselves. So also having partners like you who get in the room with us and also bring that same energy, I mean, Lightspeed is a multi-billion dollar company, right?

00:17:08:07 - 00:17:24:17
Rob Napoli
Bringing that same energy down day in, day out and thinking about the solutions. We appreciate you and appreciate you for the quick grab in here as we're closing out this event and it's been a long week for you. I know you've been talking a lot. You've been up late, up early, doing all the things. I appreciate you for being here and stepping in for a quick minute.

00:17:24:20 - 00:17:27:21
Joely Tennant
No worries. I'm going to go sleep for about 48 hours now.

00:17:27:21 - 00:17:33:00
Rob Napoli
I think doing everything. I was going to wait till Monday. Right. Okay. Appreciate you

00:17:33:02 - 00:17:34:03
Joely Tennant
No worries.

00:17:34:05 - 00:17:57:11
Rob Napoli
All right. Last but not least, Michel Jansen a.k.a the pos father. That episode and that backstory will come at a later date. But MJ is part of the leading strategic partnerships here at Omniboost and part of the sales team with me. What does it mean to be at an event like this? What does it mean to show up consistently for our partners in the industry events.

00:17:57:13 - 00:18:19:04
Michel Jansen
And I think events like this, I guess partnership suffice. A lot of people, especially after Covid, we knew people from a screen and I meet people in person and this helps drive partnerships, communicates, interact and build relationships. So events like this I'm meeting with people that is.

00:18:19:06 - 00:18:42:13
Rob Napoli
I mean, it changes everything when you get to be in a room and see that that energy, that spark happen. What is, we're closing up on the end of the year. I think we've got maybe one or two small events left to finish up as a team. Reflecting back on all the events that we've done this year and, getting to travel the world together and separately, supporting partners, supporting clients, supporting the industry.

00:18:42:15 - 00:18:48:02
Rob Napoli
What's been your key takeaway this year from being out and about?

00:18:48:04 - 00:19:06:07
Michel Jansen
That interesting question. I think it's yeah, partnership ,partnering up, connecting. I think connecting is the works, meeting the folks, connecting and that helps.

00:19:06:09 - 00:19:24:11
Rob Napoli
Yeah. And like I said, it's really easy to word partner, right? To be a partner means to be there to show up, to have those conversations, to support, to grow together, but also to learn together. I think, as a company being out and about, we've learned a lot about ourselves. We've learned a lot about our partners, We've learned a lot about our customers.

00:19:24:12 - 00:19:54:18
Rob Napoli
We've got a lot about the industry, and everything else makes us so much more excited for next year and what we can do, not only from us as the commercial team, but from us as a company level and impact it. And we were actually talking earlier with Kees and had Marv come on from Global trees from the serendipity of how that happened and the conversations and something that none of us expected to happen, turning into a potential really awesome new partner.

00:19:54:20 - 00:20:12:03
Rob Napoli
And that's what it means to be out and about, right? That's what it means to show up day in and day out. So what's the most exciting thing having worked in this space for years? What are you excited about for 2024?

00:20:12:05 - 00:20:36:03
Michel Jansen
I think bringing things to the next level and exploring where we are now and bringing it to the next level and where we are today, I think we have a really good foundation and 2024 can bring us so much because of this. And so it's going to be a great year. And especially with the partnerships we have, we can collaborate with.

00:20:36:03 - 00:20:47:04
Michel Jansen
And I think we understand each other much better. And because we understand each other much better, that is why we can make that go

00:20:47:06 - 00:21:05:05
Rob Napoli
Yeah, so 2024 will be a fun year. And I really think that we've laid, the company is continuing to build great foundations across different teams so that we can scale with our partners. We can scale globally even more globally than we already are, continue these things. But, I'd be remiss to say if I didn't share that.

00:21:05:05 - 00:21:17:10
Rob Napoli
One of the things that Michel Jansen, as I just call MJ all the time, because we actually have two Michel’s on the team that you're most excited for in 2024 really is your VW van.

00:21:17:12 - 00:21:36:21
Michel Jansen
Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to the van, you see my smile I’m looking towards the my van and I hopefully it's not 2024, hopefully before, but I we're definitely gonna do podcasts in the van on a great location and that is something I look forward to.

00:21:36:23 - 00:21:44:14
Rob Napoli
Absolutely look forward to in 2024. MJ Thank you so much for hopping on. Let's finish out, this event strong and really excited for next year.

00:21:44:16 - 00:21:50:06
Michel Jansen
Perfect. Thank you.

00:21:50:08 - 00:21:51:24
Rob Napoli
I'm going to wrap this up really quick.

00:21:52:01 - 00:21:52:24
Michel Jansen
You want someone else?

00:21:53:01 - 00:22:18:16
Rob Napoli
No, I do a closing. All right. That is it. We wanted to do a quick podcast and share a couple of key takeaways from the omniboost team you heard from Kees, you heard from Jasper, from Vinny, heard from MJ, also got a couple awesome partners like Market Man, Joely from Lightspeed Marvin from Global Tree.

00:22:18:18 - 00:22:38:07
Rob Napoli
It's really important for us to be on location and to really have these conversations. We're really excited about what that looks for in 2024 and continue to grow our partnerships, to continue to grow our business and be a great partner and serve those communities that, really serve our communities. So keep an eye out for some amazing things next year.

00:22:38:11 - 00:22:57:18
