On May twenty-third, nineteen ninety-five, Sun Microsystems put a browser onstage at SunWorld ninety-five and asked it to carry little programs through the web like fireflies in a jar.
The web in nineteen ninety-five was still a loose room of static pages. Software was strictly tied to the operating system it was built for. But Sun promised a different bargain. Write code once, run it through a virtual machine, and stop rewriting the same application for every machine on the desk. They called the language Java, and to prove it worked, they built a browser called HotJava.
