Actually ADHD | Medication Strategies & Clinical Wisdom

Creating the Focus Path YouTube Channel. Jonathan Murphy, PMHNP-BC, reflects on the first 100-video sprint of the Focus Path YouTube channel — the market gap that made the work necessary, the YMYL suppression that has capped distribution, the LegitScript certification process, the coiled spring of 100 videos awaiting verification, and the Healthy Gamer documentary that closed the first arc.
This episode covers:
  • The one-month production break after 100 videos in eight months and what it revealed
  • The catalog composition: 40-50 medication optimization videos, survival modality material, habit formation theory, and the journey from early videos to the book release
  • The Process: An Adult's Guide to ADHD Medication as the synthesis of approximately 40 transcripts from the channel
  • The market gap that made the channel worth building and the trial-and-error learning curve with the YouTube algorithm
  • The realization that came when a video with strong metrics still tanked despite everything looking correct
  • Your Money or Your Life and why ADHD medication content sits in the highest-risk category alongside personal finance
  • The LegitScript certification fee, the health shelf application, the May 1 ghosting, and the eventual creator support conversation at 4,000 watch hours
  • Why board certification, DEA licensing, state licensing, and all standard credentialing don't produce YouTube distribution
  • The imminent verification request and the coiled spring of 100 videos awaiting release
  • The Healthy Gamer documentary as the endpoint of the 100-video arc
  • The grifter grandfathered into the pre-2025 algorithm while verified credentialed voices face YMYL suppression
  • The parasocial mechanism of internet therapy monetization
  • Group psychology from 100 years ago as the predictive framework for internet group behavior
  • YouTube prioritizing the platform over the credentials that earn platform access
This is the tenth episode of Actually ADHD. Previous episodes covered the optimization blueprint, the medication walkthrough, the Goldilocks Zone framework, the seven reasons medication fails, ADHD and identity, the ADHD Matrix, the peer clinician perspective, and the origin story of Developmental Reinforcement Theory.

What is Actually ADHD | Medication Strategies & Clinical Wisdom?

Adult ADHD from the board-certified PMHNP behind the YouTube channel Focus Path and the book The Process. Clinical perspective on medication, frameworks, and the conversations the internet hasn't been having.

This is Actually ADHD.

I am your host, Jonathan Murphy,
psychiatric nurse practitioner.

This podcast is brought to you proudly
by the Focus Path YouTube channel

And I'm gonna spend some time talking
about that very channel today I've

had almost a month off from creating
content over at the Focus Path

YouTube channel, and this is after
100 videos in a span of eight months.

This has given me an opportunity
the past month to kinda look

back and see what is there.

But if you aren't aware, chances
are you probably come from there.

But if you haven't, I wanna talk
about a bit about what's on there

ADHD medication optimization,
40 to 50 videos about it.

Everything you could probably want to know
about ADHD medication if you're an adult.

I also have my survival modality,
habit formation theory and

relatable content you could say.

But you see my journey from getting in
there, those first few videos, getting

used to the process of uploading and
delivering educational mental health

content, all the way to video 100,
where I drop and release the book,

"The Process: An Adult's Guide to ADHD
Medication," which is on Amazon, which

consists of about 40 of those transcripts
that went into the synthesis of the book

But what I did not know when I was going
to make content, I of course knew the

demand was high because my practice is
full and I'm specialized in this arena.

So I thought to myself,
"Hey, it's a simple formula.

Talk about what you know and
do it i- in a manner that is

enjoyable," which is videos.

I've always loved making videos And
I've made so many now on the Focus

Path YouTube channel that I've become
a bit more coherent about having

something to say here on Actually ADHD.

But you can head over to that YouTube
channel at Focus Path Systems.

But despite the market gap and what
I knew to be high-value information,

I had little else to go on other than
the trial and error of the algorithm.

What do I know?

I don't consume this type of
content, and I had a lot to learn.

I had made videos in the past, but to
make them so quickly There was a lot of

kinks to work out, so there was always a
reason why a video just kind of tanked.

Maybe it was the click-through
rate, maybe it was the thumbnail.

So I just kept making videos, and
then eventually it hit a point where

I was like, "Okay, I've made a video
that I never thought I would make.

It's better than I ever
thought it would be."

And the click-through rate and all , the
metrics were lit up, and it still tanked.

And that's when I said, " We
have a problem here."

And I realized that I was in
your money or your life, YMYL.

So even though this is the most vital
and valuable thing for me to talk about

with the biggest audience, I don't
have a right to say it because of your

money, your life, which is the fact
that I'm talking about ADHD medication.

It's the highest risk thing, I
suppose, other than personal finance.

And why does that matter?

Well, it matters because I
need my stuff to be seen.

And it's not allowed to be seen
because it's considered high risk.

So I learned about this fact and
quickly went and discovered there's

a health shelf you can apply to.

So I paid the extra couple thousand
dollars, and in addition to the four DEA

licenses and four state licenses, board
certification, all the industry-approved

off the internet green lights you can have
don't really do much for you on YouTube.

So that health shelf application
with the $2,000 legit script fee, I'm

starting to get a little impatient,
but nonetheless, I just keep it going

and trust that things will work out.

I've gone through these
bureaucratic steps before.

And then they ghosted me on May 1st, but
ultimately, I'm navigating a mega corp.

Once I hit 4,000 hours of watch time,
then I was able to talk to creator

support, and I was able to find a person
on the other end that actually said the

application is stuck in the pipeline.

Nonetheless, I have this coiled spring
of 100 videos, and hopefully by the

time you're listening to this, it
will be released because tomorrow

I get to ask for verification.

Nonetheless you, if you haven't
been there, can check out the

Focus Path YouTube channel, and
I wanted to talk about how the

end of that creative sprint went.

Videos 97, 98, 99, and
100, or something like that

I hit this point getting
in a home stretch.

The 100 videos was a big goal.

I got into that home stretch
and I thought, " What am I

gonna make a video about now?"

And I had made a video about a
content creator, How to ADHD.

That was my 50th video.

But I didn't really know other
creators other than that.

That was an ax to grind that
was about 10 years too late.

So I'm hearing this other name that came
up recently called The Healthy Gamer.

A couple of my patients brought him up.

So I thought, "Hey, I haven't done a
video like this in almost 50 videos."

The algorithm loves it when you
get sort of, uh, controversial

or calling people out.

So I thought, "Let me
just look into this guy."

And what I discovered was shocking
because he's monetizing therapy for

an audience, which there is nothing
new under the sun I've learned and…

But I quickly discovered the
history of this guy under--

and I'm under YMYL suppression.

This guy's a legit grifter preying upon
the vulnerable and got grandfathered in

prior to the 2025, 2026 YouTube algorithm.

And then on top of all that, you
have the personal stories, patients

talking, people, just regular people
talking about their medication like,

"Hey, I took this, I took that."

How is that able to surface but I'm not?

Well, I guess I've come to realize now
it's because they, as in YouTube, worry

about a voice, an unverified voice
becoming too influential, shall we say

Which is silly because I'm governed by
the same rules that the boards hold me

to, the nursing boards of each state.

Nothing's gonna change in the way
I educate on YouTube, and it's my

license, and I have malpractice
insurance, and it's my liability.

But nonetheless, YouTube cares more
about the platform rather than the

credential that's earned the platform.

So there we're gonna have misinformation
and just grifting medicine show content,

and mine is under the YMYL gate So the
documentary that I made, 17 minutes, it

was a bit investigative journalism about
the controversy behind, uh, Healthy Gamer.

It's just fascinating to discover.

I made that really quickly and it,
uh, it did quite well for the channel.

It, um,

got locked into Google, So
there's some discovery there

from Google, which is good.

But it just blew my mind to see how this
parasocial thing on the internet works.

And I have been waiting for group
psychology, and I talked about that in

video 98 We can predict how these groups
on the internet are gonna work with

group psychology that's 100 years old.

But nonetheless I just wanna do
a little plug for the channel

because everything you need to
know about ADHD is already there.

And in one week, the uploads will
continue, and I'm excited about

all the good stuff that's coming
' Cause nothing good comes easy.

But if you're listening to this
now, I appreciate your support

Until next time, this is Jonathan
Murphy, psychiatric nurse practitioner.
