And here’s today’s news from National Health Executive on Wednesday the 19th of June 2024.
Researchers from University College London have taken a “major step forward” in the fight against Parkinson’s, after they developed a new blood test that can accurately predict the disease up to seven years before the onset of symptoms. The research used AI to analyse eight biomarkers that have elevated concentrations in those with Parkinson’s and diagnosed the condition with a 100% accuracy.
In a bid to try to strike earlier in the disease’s progression, researchers looked at 72 patients with rapid eye movement behaviour disorder. When the research team used machine learning to investigate those with iRBD, it found that nearly four in five had the same profile as someone who had already been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. After a period of follow-up over 10 years, UCL says that its team could correctly predict patients developing the disease up to seven years before any symptoms.

A new report from NHS Providers outlining measures to realise greater productivity gains has said the efforts of trusts must be matched by a commitment from government for capital investment to modernise buildings, equipment and technology. Other barriers to progress have been listed as staff exhaustion, the impact of industrial action, and the growing number of patients with complex conditions.
With these factors in mind, the reports lays out how some organisations have adapted. These include standardizing care delivery models across community nursing teams; collaborating with neighbouring trusts to tackle shared challenges; and using the power of digital to free up staff time. CEO at NHS Providers, Sir Julian Hartley, says that while some of the frontline NHS work offers real hope, if the sector is serious about its long-term sustainability, cross-government support is needed to revitalise NHS buildings and facilities.
