Hello to all listeners. I'm Miriam, and this is agriculture in a minute with the Minnesota 4-H Ag ambassadors. Today, we're talking about the journey of the egg. Let's dive in. The journey of the egg starts inside an egg.
Speaker 1:At around day five of incubation, a female chick begins the process of growing ova or egg yolks. As the chick develops, every single yolk of every single egg begins to form, starting smaller than a grain of sand. After hatching, the female chick, known as a pullet at this point, is fed a protein dense diet to help her develop well. After five to six months, the pollen is fed more calcium to make sure that she can lay strong eggshells. At this point, she finally lays her first egg, bringing deliciousness to your breakfast and making the circle round.
Speaker 1:Now you know why it takes a long time to get eggs. This is Miriam with the Minnesota 4-H Ag ambassadors. See you next time.
