Okay,
I'm sorry for the confusion regarding the ืฉืืขืืจ,
there was a misunderstanding,
I'm not sure.
Okay.
ืจืืืดื begins with a ืืืืืงืช,
a ืืืืืงืช which he mentioned at the end of last week's ืคืจืฉื,
although we did not deal with it there due to time considerations,
concerning where was ืืืจืื ืืืื ื born.
Let me point out,
it's not clear to me the significance of this ืืืืืงืช other than ืขื ืคื
It might be helpful to have this edition which you have over here,
simply ืืฆื being able to look inside.
Okay.
So on page
you have a discussion upon the topic,
where was ืืืจืื ืืืื ื born?
You have over here a map.
Here is ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื,
of course,
we're somewhere over here,
off the chart,
whatever,
near ืืฉืืื.
Off the chart,
exactly.
Okay,
right.
So,
in any case,
here you have the two rivers,
the ืืืืงื and ืคืจืช,
Euphrates and whatever you call it.
In any case,
you have ืืืืงื and ืคืจืช,
this being in a certain sense the northern border of ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื in some
of the ืคืกืืงืื.
Now over here,
we have ืืจื.
ืืจื is in between ืืืืงื and ืคืจืช.
Here is ืืจื.
On the other hand,
ืืืจ ืืฉืืื is over here.
ืืืจ ืืฉืืื is over here below the ืคืจืช.
So okay.
So where was ืืืจืื ืืืื ื born?
Was he born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื?
Was he born in ืืจื?
So let's keep in mind the following:
There is a ืืคืืจืฉ ืคืกืืง,
it's talked about over here,
based on which both ืจืฉืดื and the ืืื ืขืืจื say,
okay,
black and white,
explicit in the ืคืกืืง,
almost,
that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื,
Okay,
now,
if you do assume that,
there are a couple of questions which arise.
Question number one,
the most basic question,
beginning of this ืคืจืฉื:
Where is ืืืจืื ืืืื ื at the beginning of ืคืจืฉืช ืื ืื?
So he was in ืืจื.
How do we know that?
From what The ืชืืจื says at the end of last week's ืคืจืฉื that ืืืจืื
ืืืื ื began a trek.
He was taken by his father,
and he started a trek towards ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื.
He left
started towards ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื,
and where did he reach?
So at the end of last week's
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื is already here in ืืจื.
So now the question arises:
If you assume as the ืคืกืืง that we mentioned before,
we assume that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื,
then when ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tells ืืืจืื ืืืื ื,
when he is in ืืจื,
ืืจืฆื he already left!
So again,
if you assume like the simple,
like you would guess from that ืคืกืืง ืืจืฅ ืืืืืชื ืืืจ ืืฉืืื that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื
was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื,
and we keep in mind that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื at the end of ื ื going
to ืื ืื was already in ืืจื,
then how could ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tell ืืืจืื ืืืื ื,
who's in ืืจื,
which is not his land,
"Leave your land"?
He already left his land!
So the ืืื ืขืืจื and ืจืฉืดื deal with this in different ways.
I'm sorry,
ืจืฉืดื and the ืืื ืขืืจื deal with this in different ways.
ืจืฉืดื says that ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื is telling him,
take a look in line six in the ืจืืืดื:
ืืืจืฆื ืืืืืืืชื.
So says
on page ืขืดื,
page ืขืดื,
the sixth line on the
So true,
you already left this place,
but ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื means go even further.
Okay,
that's approach one.
and the ืื ืื was told to ืืืจืื ืืืื ื even earlier before he left
ืจืืืดื does not agree with that.
He says,
how could you say that?
After all,
the ืคืกืืง indicates at the end of ืคืจืฉืช ื ื that who instigated,
who is the active party in leaving ืืืจ ืืฉืืื?
His father.
Says,
And if,
in fact,
then it shouldn't sound like that ืืืจืื was just a tagalong.
So the ืจืืืดื feels that both ืจืฉืดื and ืืื ืขืืจื are wrong.
Rather,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืจื.
Ey,
what do you do with the explicit ืคืกืืง?
The ืคืกืืง says,
and I quote,
the ืคืกืืง is totally irrelevant,
cause after all,
the ืคืกืืง that says ืืจืฅ ืืืืืชื ืืืจ ืืฉืืื is referring to ืืจื,
the brother of ืืืจืื ืืืื ื.
The ืคืกืืง says,
So the ืคืกืืง says that ืืจื was born,
not to be confused with ืืจื,
and that ืืจื was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื.
But hey,
that doesn't necessarily mean that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื.
Rather ืจืฉืดื and ืืื ืขืืจื seem to assume that,
well,
hey,
just like one brother was born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื,
also the other.
And the ืจืืืดื says,
And says the ืจืืืดื,
I'll bring you a proof that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืจื,
not ืืืจ ืืฉืืื.
After all,
so where does ืืืืขืืจ go?
Does he go to ืืืจ ืืฉืืื?
Nope.
Where does he go?
He goes to ืืจื,
where ืืื and ืืชืืื lived.
So you see that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in ืืจื,
that area,
in ืืจื ื ืืจืื,
in ืืจื,
rather than in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื.
Okay,
as I said,
I'm not sure what the deeper significance of this ืืืืืงืช is,
but that's okay.
very important,
What does it mean
That people will bless their children by saying,
"You should be like ืืืจืื ืืืื ื."
That everybody,
even non-Jews,
will say,
"You should be like ืืืจืื ืืืื ื."
alternatively,
That when there's a righteous person,
he brings blessing not only to himself.
A righteous person brings blessing to the rest of the world as well.
Very important
Okay,
the ืจืืืดื points out the...
about something strange about these the story with ืืืจืื ืืืื ื,
in that the ืชืืจื did not tell us why is it that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื
was chosen by God?
You would have expected the ืคืกืืง to say that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was a cool
or was a righteous person.
Doesn't point that out.
Just all of a sudden,
out of the clear blue,
it says that ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tells ืืืจืื ืืืื ื,
Parenthetically,
the famous ืืืจืดื that says that the ืคืกืืง didn't want to play up the
fact that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was such a righteous individual,
cause had the ืชืืจื done that,
then one might mistakenly assume that if the Jewish people sin and are no
longer worthy,
then our chosenness will be canceled,
as,
in fact,
is the position of the Christians.
They said we were rejected,
and how did they prove it?
Well,
they burned the Jews,
they sunk them in the river,
they said,
"Ah,
they died when we sank them in the river,
when we burned them.
So you see that they're not chosen." What's called a self-fulfilling prophecy.
So,
but we understand that the chosenness of the Jewish people is eternal,
and so says the ืืืจืดื,
therefore the ืชืืจื doesn't play up that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was righteous,
cause that might cause a person to mistakenly think that if no longer righteous,
then we lose our status of being chosen.
That's incorrect.
But the ืจืืืดื does not say that.
What does the ืจืืืดื say?
The ืจืืืดื says that the ืชืืจื didn't want to get into the story of
something that would require the ืชืืจื to mention the nonsense of the ืขืืืื ืขืืืื
Okay,
why the ืชืืจื couldn't have mentioned briefly that there are people that worshiped ืขืืืื
ืืจื and didn't accept ืืืจืื ืืืื ืืณs authenticity,
that,
that I don't know.
But in any case,
take a look at the last couple lines in the ืจืืืดื here on ืคืกืืง
We're on page
right before ืคืกืืง ืืณ.
Also,
is he referring to ืืืจ ืืคืืื?
No,
that was before ืืืจ ืื ืืฉ.
There,
the Torah mentions that they
which ืื"ื understand means that they were involved in ืขืืืื ืืจื.
Okay,
moving up,
there is a famous ืืกืื:
ืืขืฉื ืืืืช ืกืืื ืืื ืื.
Now,
how do we understand that?
So normally we understand that that we're meant to learn from the actions of
the forefathers,
which is 100% correct.
However,
ืืขืฉื ืืืืช ืกืืื ืืื ืื means a lot more than that.
What it means is that whatever happened to the ืืืืช foreshadows what will happen
to the children throughout the generations.
The ืจืื"ื in the beginning of ืกืคืจ ืฉืืืช points out that in that sense,
all of ืกืคืจ ืืจืืฉืืช is a book of ืืฆืืจื,
and that what happened to the fathers is something which has impact on the
Jewish people throughout history.
So says the ืจืื"ื,
Whatever happened to the forefathers is ืกืืื for what will happen to the children.
And therefore,
says the ืจืื"ื,
the Torah will sometimes talk about things which don't seem all that important.
Like the Torah tells the story of the ืืืจืืช of ืืฆืืง.
It's not entirely clear what the significance is,
so the ืจืื"ื,
at least part of the significance is that somehow symbolizes what's going to happen
to the Jewish people,
the ืจืื"ื says with respect to the ืืชื ืืงืืฉ.
So says the ืจืื"ื,
a line three of this piece,
one might get the impression
it's superfluous,
However,
Now,
why is this so,
that why was there a need for these things to happen to the forefathers?
So he says ืื ืืืฉืจ ืืืื ืืืงืจื ืื ืืื,
he has the following idea,
that although every ื ืืืื is true,
but the extent to which a ื ืืืื might be fulfilled is sometimes a function
of whether there are any symbolic actions that were done in connection with that
When there's symbolic actions done in connection with the ื ืืืื,
that somehow gives the ื ืืืื that much more force.
Okay,
there is some story in ืชื "ื with ืืืืฉืข that tells the king ืืืืฉ,
shoot arrows in the direction of ืืจื and stump on the floor as if
to symbolize that you will stump and destroy ืืจื.
And he does it three times and the ื ืืื says,
"Well,
you should have continued to do it.
Since you only did it three times,
so you'll win three battles with ืืจื,
not more." So there seems to be such an idea and that doing some
symbolic actions strengthens the ื ืืืื.
And therefore says the ืจืื"ื,
five lines from the end of the page,
some symbol,
Okay,
the ืจืื"ื gives examples which we won't go into now.
Okay.
So says the ืจืื"ื,
Okay.
in line two,
he would publicize the name of God.
doesn't simply mean that he prayed,
but also he gave ืืจืฉืืช,
he spoke to people about about God,
he spread the name of God.
And he says on line four,
Okay.
Now,
what about ืืขืงื ืืืื ื?
We don't find
by ืืขืงื ืืืื ื.
Says the ืจืื"ื at the end of the page,
next to the last line,
at the end of the line,
Why not?
I don't know if ืืื means within them or also through them.
So everybody in ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื already knew about God.
It's pretty impressive.
So through the actions of the children,
ืืขืงื and his children,
and through the teachings of ืืืจืื and ืืฆืืง,
the name of God was known throughout all of ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื.
Okay.
So the ืจืื"ื has the following big ืืืืืฉ.
That is,
he says that which ืืืจืื ืืืื ื goes down to ืืฆืจืื is is symbolic of
the Jewish people going down to ืืฆืจืื,
and the ืืฆืจืื,
they tried to take advantage of ืฉืจื,
which also when the Jewish people were slaves in ืืฆืจืื,
it says,
So,
one might have understood that that hey,
you don't need to kill the daughters.
However,
the ืจืืืดื understands ืืื ืืืช ืชืืืื that they were interested in taking the daughters
for themselves.
So also there they wanted to take advantage of of the women,
and ืืืจืื ืืืื ื leaves leaves with gifts,
which is symbolic,
which is foreshadowing the fact the Jewish people will leave leave with ืจืืืฉ ืืืื,
and the ืืฆืจืื will receive ืืืืช.
Okay.
Then the ืจืืืดื has the following at the end,
three line three lines before the end of the page,
a a sin which had two aspects.
Number one,
that the fact that he said about ืฉืจื ืืื ื that she's his sister,
and something which could potentially have led to the fact that somebody would have
relations with her,
that was improper.
He should have had
says the ืจืืืดื,
and also the fact that he left the holy land,
that's something that is improper as well.
Okay,
the ืืคืจืฉืื discuss how could the ืจืืืดื know that this was the case,
and there are those that argue,
but that is the ืจืืืดื's ืฉืืื.
In general,
the ืจืืืดื doesn't feel that the ืืืืช were untouchables and,
you know,
cannot criticize anything which they did.
Of course,
it doesn't mean that you and I can do that,
but the ืจืืืดื apparently was on a level and could.
Okay,
Now the question is why all of a sudden now rather than earlier in
their travels?
So ืจืฉืดื seems to indicate that the ืื ืขื ืื,
they were more ืฉืืืฃ ืืืื,
that the ืืฆืจืื were more ืฉืืืฃ ืืืื.
The ืจืืืดื doesn't think that's the case.
After all,
the ืคืกืืงืื the rest of the ืชืืจื indicate that the ืืฆืจืื were very much
involved in that that that the ืื ืขื ืื,
the ืื ืขื were very much involved in ืื ืืช.
Maybe they were only afraid when they came to a place of where there's
a king,
was a ืืฉืฉ she would be taken to the king.
But the ืจืืืดื himself says the following:
the ืจืืืดื says this trick,
they used it all the time.
Just the ืชืืจื records places where this trick didn't work.
Generally speaking,
it worked,
and nothing bad happened,
but over here,
where the trick didn't work of the sister trick,
there the ืชืืจื does record what happened.
Parenthetically,
it could be that if you don't assume like that,
so it would be a little bit funny if the trick over here did
sort of not work,
so why did ืืฆืืง use the same trick again?
Presumably he heard,
although you might say maybe he didn't,
of what happened with ืืืจืื ืืืื ื.
So that's the position of the ืจืืืดื.
Okay,
when ืืืจืื ืืืื ื says,
well,
actually,
I don't know if that would address that issue.
Okay.
The ืจืืืดื has an interesting suggestion.
He said that although ืืืจืื tells ืฉืจื,
it could be that ืฉืจื ืืื ื didn't play along.
After all,
ืืืืืื he blames blames ืืืจืื,
he doesn't blame ืฉืจื.
So he says that maybe
she she just kept her mouth shut,
and she didn't play along.
She might have When ืืืจืื said ืืืชื,
then maybe ืฉืจื ืืื ื didn't say otherwise,
but Okay,
skipping to ืืดื:ืืณ.
This is an important
I hope we don't can skip that.
Several days?
Right.
Okay,
we have the world war over here between the four kings and the five.
So says the ืจืืืดื,
what's the significance of that?
Page
on page ืคืดื,
there's a concept of ืืณ
which are spoken about in ืื ืืื with a dream that ื ืืืืื ืฆืจ had,
talking about ืืณ
ืืฉ ืืืืืงืช ืืจืืฉืื ืื who exactly is included in ืืณ
but the ืืณ
ืืืืืืช that controlled the world at different times,
and these ืืจืืขื ืืืืื And they hint to ืืณ
The first one of the ืืณ
ืืืืืืช was ืืื,
and ืืื I think is associated with ืฉื ืขืจ,
and ืืืจืคื was ืืื ืฉื ืขืจ,
and so on.
So says the ืจืืืดื,
so again,
In the end,
the Jewish people will be victorious over them,
just as ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was victorious over those four ืืืืื.
and the ืจืืืฉ of the Jewish people will be returned.
I think there's only a small percentage of the property of the Jews that
were returned from the Nazis.
The Vatican is still holding on to much of the ืกืคืจื ืงืืืฉ that they
stole.
Okay,
skipping to Okay,
in the middle of the page,
a bit before halfway down,
there's a line that begins ืืช ืื ืืืืื.
So,
there's a place which is referred to as ืฉืื ืืขืืืงื.
And the question is ืฉืื ืืขืืืงื,
but ืขืืืง wasn't born yet.
Who was ืขืืืง?
ืขืืืง was a descendant of ืขืฉื.
ืขืืืง was a descendant of ืขืฉื,
and ืขืืืง wasn't born,
so how could this place be called ืฉืื ืืขืืืงื?
So,
But the ืจืืืดื says,
that's not ืคืฉื.
Rather,
why was ืขืืืง called ืขืืืง?
Because he was born in a place associated with ืืขืืืงื.
ืขืืืง that we know and hate was not the first guy to be called
There was some name ืขืืืง that existed before,
and ืขืืืง was given that name.
Similarly,
it says,
But hey,
there was a fellow whose name was ืฉืื that only shows up later,
and presumably was only born later at the time of ืืขืงื ืืืื ื.
So,
what's ืคืฉื?
So again,
the ืจืืืดื says that that ืฉืื,
time of ืืขืงื ืืืื ื,
was named after the place the place that was already previously called ืฉืื.
Okay.
Is that so common that people are called based on the name of where
they are?
I mean,
I guess last names,
names are sometimes,
but anybody here named New York or Brooklyn or London?
People named Arizona.
Okay.
Whatever.
I guess last names,
I guess when people travel sometimes they are.
Okay.
In any case,
Texas,
London,
right,
they say There can be boy named after places.
Last names also from places.
Skipping to ืคืกืืง ืืดื.
We're in ืคืจืง ืืดื.
So,
So,
what does it mean,
'I lifted my hand'?
So,
And says the ืจืืืดื,
second line the ืจืืืดื,
They ืืฉืืืข the ืืฆืจ ืืจืข not to do something.
Meaning,
a very important ืืกืื,
sometimes a person a person realizes something which he's not meant to be doing,
but he knows the ืืฆืจ ืืจืข might get the best of him.
So what does he do?
Makes some promise to avoid doing something.
That way,
it's easier for him to control his ืืฆืจ ืืจืข.
That's the idea of
So of course you have to be careful about
Rav Schachter,
when he mentioned the value of a person having ืงืืืืช,
accepting some ืงืืื on ืจืืฉ ืืฉื ื,
ืืื ืืืคืืจ time,
he did mention under his breath that it maybe should be done ืืื ื ืืจ.
But that's a they tell a story of some fellow that had difficulty stopping
to smoke,
so what did he do?
Made a public declaration that he's stopping to smoke,
and then he realized that with the realization that he doesn't want to feel
like a hypocrite,
and therefore he had no choice but to stop smoking.
Because if he would smoke,
then he would turn out that he was telling a lie.
So ืืืจืื ืืืื ื swears that he won't take anything from the property,
because he didn't want his ืืฆืจ ืืจืข to get the better of him.
Okay,
there is another interpretation.
ืจืืืดื says that ืืจืืืืชื ืืื means that,
'I'm dedicating to ืืงืืฉ.
Whatever I take from you,
I'm not going to keep for myself,
I'm just going to give to ืืงืืฉ.'
So that obviously means that the ืืฆืจ ืืจืข will be that much weaker.
Okay.
after promised kids,
nevertheless asks God,
What's
I won't say this inside,
that the ืฆืืืงืื sometimes are afraid that they sinned ืืฉืืื,
and therefore,
although God promised them,
but nevertheless,
that promise wouldn't necessarily come to fruition due to their sinning.
Okay,
on page ืฆืื,
it says,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื believed in God,
in God's promise.
So what does it mean
who was ืืืืฉืื?
ืจืฉืดื says that ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื considered it to be righteousness on the part
of ืืืจืื ืืืื ื that believed God's promise.
Says
that is a zero ืืืืืฉ.
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื that's willing to go from his land and separate himself from everything
which he had to go to ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื,
and ืืืจืื ืืืื ื that's willing to sacrifice his son,
so although that didn't take place yet,
so obviously when ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tells him some wonderful news will have a
child,
so obviously he's going to believe that.
So rather the ืจืืืดื says ืืืืฉืื ืื ืฆืืงื is that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื considered it
to be righteousness on the part of God.
When God promises ืืืจืื ืืืื ื wonderful gifts,
ืืืจืื doesn't say,
"Well,
God owes it to me." Rather,
he considered it to be righteousness on the part of God,
ืืกื on the part of God that He promised him all those gifts.
Okay,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื is told in the ืืจืืช ืืื ืืืชืจืื to take ืขืืื ืืฉืืืฉืช.
The ืจืืืดื understands that means three animals,
kind of like the three types of ืงืจืื ืืช.
What are the three types of ืงืจืื ืืช?
and ืฉืืืื.
Three types of animals.
Got that?
and ืฉืืืื.
Three types of ืงืจืื ืืช.
Thank you.
I was waiting for that.
So the ืจืืืดื points out that ืืืืช and ืืฉื,
they're basically the same.
So ืขืืื,
and ืฉืืืื.
So that's the
and in fact ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื is telling ืืืจืื ืืืื ื that ืืืืืช the ืงืจืื ืืช,
the Jewish people will hold onto ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื,
and Rabbi Schachter very often quotes the ืืืจื in ืืืืื,
also elsewhere,
that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื asks,
"What about when there's no ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ?" and ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื says,
"Well,
that's what will have,
that's the ืืืืช which will have ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื." So Rabbi Schachter points out that
one should say some amount of ืงืจืื ืืช.
How much?
So we could discuss,
but okay.
I don't have patience to wait.
Skipping to...
the ืคืกืืง says in ืคืกืืง ืืดื on page ืฆืดื:
ืืื ื ืืืื ืืฉืื ืืืื...
ื ืคืืช ืขืืื.
So ืืืดื understands this ืจืื to future ืืืืืืช.
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื sensed that there is going to be more ืืืืืืช,
not just ืืืืช ืืฆืจืื.
Okay,
So for how many years is it meant to be
So it sounds like
but we know that it wasn't work of 400 years.
So all sorts of approaches,
but ืจืืืดื ืขื ืคื ืคืฉื says that we're meant to transpose the ืืจืืข ืืืืช
and within those years,
they're going to be
but not that the ืืขืืืื ืืขื ื ืืชื will be necessarily for 400 years.
Okay,
the ืจืืืดื has another ืคืฉื,
but not for now.
Okay,
So it says the Jewish people are going to be slaves,
So what does the ืืื mean?
So the ืจืืืดื quotes ืจืฉืดื,
ืืื that ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื is also going to punish,
punish other nations that are going to be ืืฉืขืื the Jewish people.
However,
it means that it's true that the Jewish people,
they're going to be in ืืฆืจืื,
they're going to be punished with ืืืืช ืืฆืจืื,
but that doesn't exempt the ืืฆืจืื from being punished.
It's true that God,
for whatever reason,
feels the Jewish people should be in ืืฆืจืื,
doesn't exempt the Egyptians from being punished.
Okay,
and the ืจืืืดื over here has a lengthy discussion about this topic of why
the Egyptians were punished if it's part of God's plan that the Jewish people
should be slaves.
There's a ืจืืืดื that he quotes that he argues with.
It's not clear to me the crux of the ืืืืืงืช.
But in any case,
the ืจืืืดื's's says that,
well,
hey,
God didn't say it had to be the Egyptians,
could have been somebody else.
So the Egyptians,
they're punished for volunteering.
The ืจืืืดื doesn't like that,
cuz says,
hey,
if God says somebody should do something,
and that somebody goes ahead and volunteers,
But the ืจืืืดื says that the Egyptians were punished cuz they went above and
beyond the call of duty,
which indicate that they did not do it ืืฉื ืฉืืื.
How the ืจืืืดื agrees with that,
but whatever,
in any case.
So the ืจืืืดื says the Egyptians were punished cuz they went above and beyond
the call of duty.
Now the ืจืืืดื points out the following:
If there,
let's say,
some ืจืืฆื,
some crook,
kills X,
so,
says the ืจืืืดื,
it is quite possible,
and we only assume that apparently on ืจืืฉ ืืฉื ื,
ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื decided that X should be killed.
That doesn't exempt the murderer from being punished,
as the ืืฉื ื in ืืืืช indicates,
So says the ืจืืืดื by the 55,
we're about six lines down on page ืฆืดื.
Six lines down in ืฆืดื.
Says the ืจืืืดื,
in the middle of the line,
That won't exempt the ืืืกืืื.
when it's a ื ืืื that says something's gonna happen,
then,
says,
when the ื ืืื says that ืคืืื ื is gonna be killed,
then if one kills
then he's not punished.
But does it ืฉืื ืืฉื ืฉืืื,
then he will be punished.
So says the ืจืืืดื,
ื ืืืืื ืฆืจ heard a ื ืืืื that Jewish people meant to be destroyed,
and he was,
he volunteered to do so.
So why was he severely punished?
Why would he be severely punished?
A,
cuz he did it
and also he went above and beyond the call of duty,
did things which were not called for.
Okay.
This is something which is just ืคืฉื on the ืคืกืืง,
which it's important for us to keep in mind.
If one will ask,
you know,
it's nice of God to give us ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื,
but why does it need to come,
why does that give us the right to kill out all the ืื ืขื ืื?
What's the answer to that question?
So God want to give us the land,
but why does that give us the right to kill all the ืื ืขื ืื?
What's the answer?
They didn't want to give it up.
Cuz the ืื ืขื ืื were wicked people.
How do I know?
Cuz the ืชืืจื says,
The ืชืืจื tells us in other places,
also here the ืชืืจื says that we don't get,
ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tells ืืืจืื ืืืื ื that you're not going to get ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื
right away,
that the ืืืืจื,
they sinned,
but they didn't sin enough to forfeit their right to live and to forfeit
the land.
So it's clear that,
okay,
in any case,
there is in ืืจืืช ืืื ืืืชืจืื there's a ืชื ืืจ ืขืฉื ืืืคืื ืืฉ.
So the ืจืืืดื points out these are expressions which are similar to what took
place at ืืจ ืกืื ื when ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื's ืฉืืื ื appeared.
So in the ืืจืืช ืืื ืืืชืจืื you have,
when people make a ืืจืืช it was traditional to cut some animal in two
and for the two parties to walk in between.
which is symbolic of what took place at ืืจ ืกืื ื,
which symbolizes the ืฉืืื ื going in between the two parts.
Why did ืืืจืื ืืืื ื not need to go in between the two parts?
I don't know.
Okay.
very important ืจืืืดื.
ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื promises ืืจืฅ ืื ืขื to ืืืจืื ืืืื ื a number of times.
Why so many times?
The ืจืืืดื points out that each ืืืืื added more,
added something above and beyond the previous one,
whether it be more in terms of territory,
or more in terms of time.
And take a look about halfway through the piece,
first word of the line is ืืจืขื:
ืืคืขื ืืฉืืืฉืืช...
ืืคืขื ืืฉืืืฉืืช ืืืจ ืื ืชืืืื ืืืจืฅ,
the borders of the land,
And then even if we sin,
eventually we will get ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื.
later in the ืคืจืฉื,
where ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื commands him on ืืืื,
What's the significance of that?
That is so important.
ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื promises us that even if we eventually going to ืืืืช,
but we will eventually return to ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื.
That's an important
I wonder if ืืืจืื ืืืื ื realized that would take place in,
you know,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born in 1948,
you know,
the Of the years that you count.
of the years,
right.
So,
I don't know if he knew that the Jewish people would come back in
our time,
whatever.
that ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื will Himself lead the Jewish people and won't be controlled
by any astrological forces or heavenly forces.
Okay.
on the same page,
ืืืจืื listens to ืฉืจื,
he suggested that he marry ืืืจ.
ืจืืืดื points out that the ืคืกืืง emphasized that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื only did it because
that was request of ืฉืจื ืืื ื.
Okay,
and ืคืกืืง ื,
he has an interesting discussion with ืืืื which says that if a couple doesn't
have children then after 10 years,
and there's some concept of divorcing,
there's discussion whether nowadays something which applies,
and ืจืืืดื doesn't talk about,
but talks about that which there's some statement in ืืืดื that the dwelling in
ืืืฅ ืืืจืฅ doesn't count in the ืื ืื of 10 years.
Okay.
Next,
in ืคืกืืง ื,
the end of page ืฆื,
an amazing ืจืืืดื,
somewhat scary:
So ืฉืจื ืืื ื gives ืืืจ a hard time.
Of course,
ืืืจ earned the hard time because she was very uppity when she became pregnant.
But in any case,
so says who was that?
Yeah,
if I'm not mistaken.
So says
ืืืจืื not stopping ืฉืจื,
As a result of ืฉืจื ืืื ื's rough treatment to ืืืจ,
that's why she had a child that gives us such a hard time throughout
the ages.
Far out.
Okay.
Says
at the end of page ืฆื,
ืจืืืดื says,
says this is like the ืืฆืื of ืชืืื ืชืืื ืขื ืืณ
the idea being five lines from the end of the page:
ืืขื ืื ืืฉื ืืื ืฉืืืืื ืืืื ืื ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื ืืืื ืืื ืืขื ืืืืืืช ืืชืืื ืืืกืืฃ,
ืืื ืืืืื ืืขืฉืืช ืืืืื.
God is all-powerful.
We should not believe any magicians,
any astrological predictions of the sort.
One should not believe that what they say will certainly happen.
God is all-powerful,
everything is in the hand of God.
could do a favor even if the stars doesn't indicate that,
even if the stars indicate that everything will be great,
God could bring
Okay.
Skipping to ืคืกืืง ื on the next page,
Why is the ืืจืืช ืืืื on that part of the body?
So it says the different reasons,
but ืจืืืดื says,
ืืืืจื line three in ืคืกืืง ื,
that part of the body that's associated with desire,
only use it for that which is permissible,
that which is a ืืฆืื,
not to use it for a ืืื.
So the idea is that one is meant to control his desires.
Okay.
Now,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื laughs when he hears he's going to have a child.
ืจืืืดื says that that which ืืืจืื thought that it was far out they were
to have a child is not mainly based on the fact that he was
a hundred,
but the fact that he did not have a child,
fact that he's old,
did not have a child from ืฉืจื ืืื ื,
that is what he thought was so wild.
Because after all,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื had children when he was much older after ืฉืจื ืืื ื died.
died from ืงืืืจื.
So the fact that he would have a wife,
that they would have a child from ืฉืจื,
that's something that was,
that was outstanding.
Okay,
So ืจืืืดื says something pretty amazing.
He says that when ืืืจืื says,
this is after of course he was told he would have a child from
so he says that what ืืืจืื was saying,
"Well,
hey,
that's wonderful,
but I don't want it to come at the expense of ืืฉืืขืื.
I don't want ืืฉืืขืื to die." And ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื says,
"Okay,
you asked for it,
you got it." I sometimes wonder if ืืืจืื ืืืื ื foresaw the future,
would he say,
would he have taken a different position?
I don't know,
about ืืฉืืขืื.
Didn't he see the future though?
Does it mean that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื knew everything that would happen in the future?
I don't know that necessarily is the case.
Okay.
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื does ืืจืืช ืืืื first to others and then to himself,
some because he was afraid that if he'd do the ืืจืืช ืืืื to himself
first,
he would be too weak.
Okay,
to review some things which we've seen,
so although the ืคืกืืง ืืืจืฅ ืืืืืชื ืืืืจ ืืฉืืื might give you an impression ืืืจืื
ืืืื ื is born in ืืืจ ืืฉืืื,
as ืจืฉืดื and ืืื ืขืืจื understand,
the ืจืืืดื says,
"No,
ืืจืฅ ืืืืืชื ืืืืจ ืืฉืืื is only referring to ืืจื." But ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was born
in ืืจื,
which explains,
which resolves also some difficulties you might have had from the end of last
week's ืคืจืฉื,
and also why ืืืืขืืจ goes to ืืจื ื ืืจืื.
ืืืื ืืจืื means that people will bless their children,
say,
"Be like ืืืจืื ืืืื ื."
that people,
not only Jews,
also non-Jews will bless,
or alternatively means that people will be blessed because of you.
ืจืืืดื had a bit of a discussion about why is it that the ืชืืจื
doesn't previously tell us about how special ืืืจืื ืืืื ื was.
Uh,
what happened to the forefathers foreshadows what will happen in the future.
means that he publicized the name of God.
Okay,
ืจืืืดืืณs opinion was improper for ืืืจืื ืืืื ืโืจืืืดืืณs opinion that was improper for ืืืจืื ืืืื ื
to leave ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื and to put ืฉืจื ืืื ื into danger.
ืจืืืดื suggests that the wife,
that the sister trick was something that was used on somewhat of a regular
basis.
He says that the war with the four ืืืืื symbolized that they're going to
be four ืืืืื that will subjugate the Jewish people,
and in the end the Jewish people will be victorious.
He says ืฉืื ืืขืืืงื is not ืขื ืฉื the future,
but there was a place there at that time already known as ืฉืื ืืขืืืงื,
and then later ืขืืืง was named after him.
he says an important principle,
they will force themselves into doing that which is right.
the ืจืืืดื says that ืืืจืื ืืืื ื considered to be righteousness on the part of
God that which God gave him gifts.
He didn't say,
"Oh,
I'm such a cool guy,
so God owes it to me." When the ืคืกืืง says ืืจ ืืืื ืืจืขื ืืขืืืื
that could be understood as
ืืขืืืื ืืขื ื ืืืชื will not be for that entire period.
Okay,
the ืจืืืดื had a discussion of why the ืืฆืจืื were punished if in fact
there was a ืืืืจื that the Jewish people would be ืขืืืื.
He says,
well,
the ืจืืืดื says they didn't need to volunteer,
could have been somebody else.
And the ืจืืืดื says that's due to the fact that they didn't do it
they went above and beyond the call of duty.
Okay,
that refers to the ืฉืืื ื that passed between the different parts of the,
different halves of the animal.
Okay,
ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื makes a number of promises to ืืืจืื ืืืื ื,
each promise is adding,
and one of the promises ืืงืืืฉ ืืจืื ืืื tells him that even the Jewish
people go into ืืืืช,
they will eventually return to ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจืื.
Okay,
the ืจืืืดื says it was improper that which ืฉืจื ืืื ื gave such a hard
time to ืืืจ,
and therefore she was given a son that would bring all sorts of hardships
to the Jewish people.
that means commanding ืืืจืื ืืืื ื to realize that it's only God who determines what's
going to be the fate of the Jewish people.
ืจืืืดื had a discussion about why ืืจืืช ืืืื is on that part of the
body,
and points out that that which ืืืจืื thought was strange to have children is
not mainly or not only due to his age due to the fact that
he didn't think he would have a child with ืฉืจื ืืื ื.
Okay,
ืืืจืื ืืืื ื expresses the fact that although he's happy they'll have a son from
but it shouldn't come at the expense of ืืฉืืขืื.
Okay,
have a wonderful ืฉืืช.
Thank you very much,
