Basically, Amy and I just believe in women's sports, and we believe that this moment for women's sports, and specifically volleyball, is much bigger than anyone's school, conference, or league. So, we need to talk about it all.

And thankfully, the volleyball world gave us plenty to talk about before we ever recorded this episode. So settle in. We're going to have some fun.

First, let's start. We had a whole preseason conversation planned for this episode, and then the volleyball actually started. We had a whole separate conversation, which is great.

But the ABCA First Serve gave us ranked matchups all weekend long in Milwaukee. And apparently, everyone decided that August 21st was a pretty late enough, was like. The time for the chaos.

That's a great way of putting it because. Yeah, I'm still really like rapping and really wrapping my mind around it, reeling a little bit from everything. Typically, though.

Later in the show, we will have listener questions, but we're going to actually move that forward just a little bit because we talked about Alex and Richard, and they were a couple of, a few people I'd say, that had a very specific question. That we figured we'll just address from the top. And that is how does AVCA first serve actually work?

Why are these matches counting when the rest of the country hasn't even officially started its seasons yet? So Amy, I would love if you could just explain the weirdness to us.

Yeah, absolutely. So the season officially begins August 28th. You will realize that it is not yet.

So. Yes, matches have already been played. This is the third year of the resurrected ABCA First Serve event.

It existed in various forms previously, went away for a very long time, and I was back. Those matches that were played for the ABCA first serve event, those count. Unlike the ones Thursday at ATT Stadium.

Those do not count for money, not for records.

They don't count towards the ledger. And so. How is that allowed to happen?

Well, there was an existing exemption through the NCAA for the first serve. And so if you're new to this or A little rusty on this. There's another relevant and applicable rule here, too.

Teams can only be invited to play in the first serve twice over a four-year window. So that's why Nebraska couldn't participate. That's why moving forward, Pitt's going to have to take a pause because they played this year and last year.

Louisville has played a few times as well. And so That's another thing. Like, oh, why aren't just like the top, like, however many teams there?

Well, there's other things that go into it as well. And so Unless the rules change, which the rules are always changing. So you never know.

Yeah, they're real matches. They count, and a handful of teams basically get a head start on creating the chaos that we're all certainly going to still experience here in the coming week or weekend. But let's talk about what.

Happened just quickly. I'm not going to go over every little detail of this. We're going to dive into that in a second.

But a quick weekend recap: number seven, Louisville beat number eight, Texas AM, three to one. Number three, Kentucky, swept number six, Wisconsin. Number six, Wisconsin, turned around and then swept number seven, Louisville.

Number 12, Arizona State, beat number two, Texas, three to one. Number eleven, SMU, swept number eight, Texas AM. And number four, Pitt, beat number three, Kentucky.

3-1. So, six matches. A defending national champion went 0-2.

The number two team in the country lost its own opener. Kentucky looks kind of terrifying after one night. And then Pitt makes a pretty convincing statement two days later.

Yeah, so we kind of need to just start somewhere broadly to like start making sense of this. So, Amy, what was the biggest statement mean at first serve?

So, while, so we're recording, it's Monday early-ish, there's still. Some more matches in that to go. So the chaos continues.

The chaos continues. So maybe it hasn't happened yet, but as we are recording before the matches start on Monday. To me, it was Pitt over Kentucky.

Both teams are national title contenders, and for Pitt to look as dominant as it did. I think that put the volleyball world on notice with Izzy Stark running the show. 297 had 14 total team blocks.

Olivia Babcock had 29 total points. Okay. Yeah.

I'm going SMU. Yes, Texas AM was without Kendall Stowers, and that does matter. But you still swept the defending national champions for a team that came in at number 11.

I think that's a pretty good way to announce that maybe we need to be talking about you more, taking you a little more seriously. And so, look, SMU, you have my attention. I don't want that's one where, you know, I would say statement made.

Statement made. So with that in mind. Which result, Amy, changed the way you think about a team the most?

Not that I thought the Sun Devils were bad by any stretch. They're the best. Big 12 favorite, like put some respect on Arizona State's name.

But to start your season against Texas is a tough draw. And then Arizona State won while only hitting Like just over 100. Like one, two, three.

Pleasing number at the same time, though. I'm sorry, like one, two, this thing. Yeah, exactly.

So. When you can find out ways to grit out wins when the offense isn't as successful as you'd like it to be, that's going to be huge for the postseason. Those types of things happen.

I like how that, like, number side of my brain was immediately like, oh, one, two, three. Like, that's just at least an appealing-looking number, even if it's not what you want it to be. No. Still.

How often does that happen? Those are the questions I have. I'm going to take Wisconsin, mostly because of how quickly they responded.

They got swept by Kentucky on Friday, like we talked about. Didn't look particularly good doing it. Then, less than 24 hours later, turned around and swept Louisville.

I don't know. Who I don't know what I would say I learned who this Wisconsin team is yet based on the information available, but I do think I learned how they will respond when things are not going potentially their way. Uh I do think it's still too early, but I I do think this changed a little bit about how I'm thinking about Wisconsin, at least for right now.

They clearly know how to respond. At least in this very initial data point. So we'll see if that continues.

But kind of in the same vein of that, which team are you not overreacting to yet?

Texas AM. They lost a ton of veteran leadership from their national championship team last year. They had to play without their best players, without one of their best players.

And they might be without her for a while. It's not season ending from what it sounds like, but it could keep her out for a little bit, so her health will be something to monitor. And I think You know, if she's not playing, they're probably not going to play the volleyball that they want to play, but don't hold it against them, I guess.

Because look at them last year, like they came out of nowhere and won the national championship. And so a lot of it is about peaking at the right time, not necessarily in week zero.

Yeah, I mean, I'm gonna go with Kentucky. The Wildcats looked really, really good against Wisconsin. Then they ran into a pit team that I do think is capable of winning a national title.

Losing that match, I don't. Think suddenly erased what Kentucky showed us on Friday night, but they still are firmly in the national title conversation. For me, the thing about these early season matches, the benefit of the AVCA first serve is that you do kind of get an opportunity to test yourself in a very tough environment, and that can be very beneficial to these teams down the road. So like a lost or a win doesn't always necessarily mean anything.

To quote Nebraska softball coach Rhonda Rebell, it's not a loss, it's a learn. And I like that quote. I love that quote. When it comes to things like this, right? I mean, yes, it is a loss, but if you can turn it into a learning opportunity, there's value in that.

That first weekend, that week zero competition, I think we're going to be in for a treat this season that is super chaotic.

I mean, I said this is going to sound dramatic, and I don't mean it to, but like the messiness at the top. And I don't mean messiness in a negative way. I just meant like, I don't think we're going to have a season, like you were just saying, where like one or two teams and it's just like one or two teams and then everybody else.

What this weekend really showed us is that there are a lot of really, really good teams and really, really good teams are going to lose matches this year. I think we're going to have to get comfortable with that, but it's also going to be really. I mean, settle in.

Like, if you are somebody who won, if you are a huge volleyball fan now, you're going to love it. If you are just starting to get into the game, this is going to be, there's going to be a lot to just absorb. So.

Exciting times. What's one thing, what's one first serve takeaway that you think we're going to laugh about in October?

Texas losing. I don't think we're going to like, haha, Texas lost. I think.

One bad match does not define what I think this Texas team could be. Like, you think one bad match is going to turn into a rough season for Texas? No, they'll figure it out.

They absolutely will. You and I are on the same page. I said I don't think that Arizona beating Texas was this enormous, shocking upset.

You had said put some respect on Arizona State's name. We had actually talked before this episode. We had kind of recorded a test episode just to like, you know.

See how everything went. And one of the things I talked about was Arizona State because they are the big 12, like favorite, the preseason favorite of the year. However, you want to say that, like, they're the favorite to win the Big 12.

There we go. I'm like, how do I want to say this? They've won that conference two years in a row.

It's a stacked conference too. It's really, I mean, it's strange to me to see Pac-12 teams in the Big 12. As a KU alum, don't get me started.

It's a strange world. But by October, we might look back at this and go, oh, maybe we shouldn't have been that surprised. I do think people are going to look at that and be like, oh, Arizona State, I think.

Really showed, I think that is the match that people are going to look back at, think specifically, and be like, oh, yeah, the chaos, got it. Because I think everybody is any given day could be a loss for any team. And I don't mean that to be like doom and gloom.

It just truly is the competition level feels very, very high right now. And that's all exactly why all of this preseason rankings are, you know, they're fun, they're something. We looked at them last week, and now looking at them again, because we don't have a new poll just yet, they do give us something to talk about.

And approximately 48 hours or a week or however many long after poles are released, volleyballs will start to make them look ridiculous. It just is what it is. So, while we don't have a new poll yet, we just have the preseason top 25.

We're going to talk about the top 15 really quickly. We are going to come back to the top 15 regularly on this podcast. We won't dive into the whole top 25 every week, but if you're somebody Who just wants a little refresher, or you kind of want some thoughts on like what exactly is going on?

That's what this is here to do. So, let's talk about the preseason poll and then what stood out. So, really quickly, just running through the top 15.

Nebraska, Texas, Kentucky, Pitt, Stanford, Wisconsin, Louisville, Texas AM, Purdue, Penn State, SMU, Arizona State Creighton, Minnesota, and Kansas rounds us out at 15. So eight of these teams have already given us something to react to at the time of this recording. Seven haven't played an official match yet.

at least like I said, like at the time that you might be listening to this. So we don't need to sit here and invent our own poll on August 24th. But let's get to two quick things.

And then I used to be an FCS voter, which is even harder. So, yes, I love FCS football. So.

I think we're in alignment on this, but Wisconsin. Kentucky swept with Wisconsin. And I think it's important to know that, yeah, it was a sweep.

But that second set was a deuce game that went to an extra point. So it was really close. But a sweep is a sweep nevertheless, right?

So and then as we talked about, then Wisconsin bounced back. So I think, you know what's great about figuring out this chaos? Have you looked at their Wisconsin schedule for this next weekend?

Because they play Stanford on Friday and Pitt on Sunday, so we're totally going to figure out Wisconsin. Totally.

Yeah, I mean I said Wisconsin too because I was like, how do you rank a team that got swept by Kentucky, turned around, swept Louisville? And then it's like, which version is closer to the Wisconsin that we're going to get? But like you just said. We're going to have a much clearer idea because they have definitely set themselves up to get a pretty clear idea.

Last season did not go according to plan for them, but I'm not counting them out for a run. San Antonio. Kennedy Martin, as we saw last year, is an extremely talented right side.

Opposing teams know she's going to be hitting the ball. And no one can stop her anyway. And so this season she's reunited with Alexis Stuckey, who was her setter at Florida.

Yeah, I'm going to be watching Creighton mostly because they are also not easing into anything. Like, I feel like that is the theme across the board. They get Purdue Friday.

Minnesota Saturday, USC Sunday. Three matches, three days, all three teams that have made that all made the NCAA tournament last year. I feel like we're going to know a lot more about Creighton by Sunday night than we do right now at the same time at the way that all this chaos is happening.

Who knows? But I am really excited to see this Creighton team in action. I think we had an opportunity to just talk via email very briefly with Their SID, but this is also sports information director.

I also need to be very clear that I sometimes shorten things without realizing not everyone knows what that means, and that is okay. He made a really good point where he was like, This is the first season in a while where some of the names that a lot of people know are not on this team. And so it's going to be really interesting to see this Creighton team grow and adapt with.

But that's how normal it felt. There was high-level women's volleyball on my television. There were games to flip between, scorers to follow, people arguing about results afterwards.

Let's keep it going. So, yeah, I just, we've talked so much, at least just between Amy and I, about the growth of women's volleyball and what comes next for this sport. And I think my favorite thing for this weekend is that it didn't feel like we had to talk about the growth.
