Isaiah Rivera, pro dunker, and John Evans discuss anything related to maximizing athletic performance, and in particular, jump training. Strength and conditioning, jumping technique, weight room practices, and general fitness and health tips and advice are shared on this podcast.
My camera is shadow side.
Speaker 2:What's up, guys? Welcome back to the THPStrength podcast. My name is John Evans, and I coach many of the highest jumpers in the world. Hopefully, this week, we will have the former world record holder reclaim his world record.
Speaker 1:You saw that post?
Speaker 2:No. I just sent
Speaker 1:him You to the know who else is doing it? It it's gonna be so it's a competition. Yeah. Duntman just posted it. It's Dylan McCarthy, Cam Hazard, and Darius Clark, because Darius Clark is in Dumpman now.
Speaker 2:Gonna be picking it up. This is interesting. This is
Speaker 1:gonna be a glorious Uh-huh. Like
Speaker 2:Who do you think's gonna comp.
Speaker 1:Dylan, dude. Dylan's gonna take I
Speaker 2:I think so too.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I think he's gonna rip out a 50.
Speaker 2:Maybe that should be the topic that we talk about. Yeah. We could change
Speaker 1:it on the fly. You've coaching him? Have you been coaching him? Dylan? Yeah.
Speaker 1:Like like, leading up to this. Like, are you doing something specifically to
Speaker 2:Not really. Like, we've just been following along conjugate sequence system. He didn't really, like he actually didn't tell me any details about this. Do you know who has? Who?
Speaker 2:You. Oh. You're the only one that has was I allowed to
Speaker 1:Is he even peeking for this?
Speaker 2:No. I mean, I should let me check. Hold on. I guess I could look and see, like no. He's not.
Speaker 2:He he's not focused per se on this. This? Yeah. His focus is dunk, man, I'm assuming. Yes.
Speaker 2:His focus is dunk man, which I think is I don't smart, maybe not the right word. I think it's logical. You know? Yeah. I don't think that this whether he breaks it here or not doesn't matter.
Speaker 2:Like, this is just kind of a showcase for for dunk man. I did just ask him if he's unloading, and he said, yeah. He's unloading.
Speaker 1:Oh, baby.
Speaker 2:Let's see. Dropping volumes. Hopefully, 50%. Hopefully, he didn't he didn't jump. But this it's not yeah.
Speaker 2:It's not been a focus. This is not what we're peaking for. This is just kind of something for him to do. Like, I don't think he's I don't I don't know the details about this, but I don't think it's, like, that high of a priority for him. So Yeah.
Speaker 2:He will I'm
Speaker 1:still excited to see it.
Speaker 2:You're gonna get to be there. Yeah. Yeah. I get to see you. Happens.
Speaker 2:So it's on what day is it on? Friday?
Speaker 1:Friday. Yeah. And you
Speaker 2:think he's gonna shatter it? I think he's gonna get 53.
Speaker 1:Who Bro, with adrenaline, he's never he has never tested with adrenaline. And we're gonna be in the biggest, like, non sporting sporting event in the world. Like, this is gonna be Yeah. Like, for I got for for the context, for the podcast, they're flying me out to this thing called Fanatics Fest. It's in New York.
Speaker 1:Literally, LeBron's gonna be there. New York Knicks are gonna be there. Some of the biggest sports podcasts are gonna be there. I'm doing a a podcast with with Shaq. I think Adam Lefko.
Speaker 2:You know Adam Lefko? No. But you've mentioned him.
Speaker 1:He's a he's a big, like, sports personality, like, you know, commentator type thing. A podcast. Oh.
Speaker 2:But
Speaker 1:yeah. So it's gonna be, like, a crazy, crazy environment, and they're going like, one thing I've realized about testing from seeing it at camp is people get hyped. Like, dunking's, like, you you it's hit or miss. Sometimes people don't know what's going on. People understand high object, human touch.
Speaker 1:He's flying. He's jumping high.
Speaker 2:What do you mean? Like, when Dak tried?
Speaker 1:Bro, at camp. Like, at camp, the the oh, I I guess you haven't seen them actually the last couple of years. It's it's so high. Like, people go crazy over the Vert Trainer the Vert Trainer testing.
Speaker 2:So who all did it this past year? Just Dak. Right?
Speaker 1:It was Dak. Yeah. Dak was the only one that did it. So the fact that it's, like, a huge event like this and it's competition, comp people always don't hire when it's competitive. Like, he's bro, I think he tested fifty two five in, like, a gym with, like, a few people in there.
Speaker 1:Now it's
Speaker 2:Yeah. Is Guinness gonna be there? I don't think so. So it's just gonna be what? What are they using to test?
Speaker 1:I have no idea. No idea on the details. They should just have me fucking verify everything.
Speaker 2:No. I was gonna say, bet you it's not even gonna be legit. They're probably just gonna have, like, a stick on a bell. You think so? Yeah.
Speaker 2:It's probably just gonna be like this
Speaker 1:It's gotta be a little it's gotta have some sort
Speaker 2:of No. It's probably gonna be like Venice. There's no way, dude.
Speaker 1:I know because Mia Mia told me she was getting on them on it being legit. Like, she because she was like because when Mia told me, she she asked them if Guinness is gonna be there, and they were like, no. Like, it's not worth it to it it costs, like, freaking 50 k or something like that to get the Guinness out. But then, Mia was like, no. You can, like, just get all the like, get the measurements they asked for, you can, like, mail it in, basically.
Speaker 1:So I'll see. I I mean, I can ask Mia, like, after this. But I'm
Speaker 2:actually really curious to hear. Yeah. Dylan said yeah. I'm I'm, yeah, I'm just texting Dylan. I'm just telling him chill, but you'll have a good chance.
Speaker 2:I mean What are
Speaker 1:your what are your predictions?
Speaker 2:It depends on on so many variables. Like, what's the floor look like? What's the testing conditions? What are they using Vertex? Are they using Vert Trainer?
Speaker 2:Is are they gonna have space? Is it gonna be a hype environment, or is it gonna be dead? Like, it depends on so many variables that, like, I can't even say
Speaker 1:I'm gonna be there. It'll be hype.
Speaker 2:Isaiah's gonna be
Speaker 1:I'm notorious for if a demon's dead, I will still scream my
Speaker 2:ass off. But the thing is, yes. I just don't know if that's what they are gonna respond a little too. Yeah. So, like, I don't know.
Speaker 2:I I don't what time is it? What time are they doing it? Do you know what time they're doing it? Idea.
Speaker 1:I'm guessing later. I have to be there from, like, I think twelve to four. And I remember Mia saying that was, like, the last thing I would do is I go watch that. So it's I'm guessing it's around four. I have
Speaker 2:It's gonna be Probably. I would love if he broke it. And let's not measure shit until after.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yeah. I'll bring my measuring tape.
Speaker 2:Did you get my joke? Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1:I did I just got that. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Let's unfold the the whole measuring device, then we'll put it back up and measure it. Yeah. And then I think we should measure his reach again just in case it's wrong. Yeah. Case it's a in case it's a little lower.
Speaker 2:Yeah. So we'll see. Hopefully, he can break it. So I do wanna talk about your death. My death by squats?
Speaker 2:Your awakening, actually. My awakening? Oh my gosh. You know, I honestly thought we were just gonna talk about I honestly thought we were just gonna talk about like No. Doing it.
Speaker 2:Tell the people what you did. I did 510 barbell squat jumps at what what is the equivalent? I think each blue band is what? Like, two like, 35 pounds or something? Yeah.
Speaker 2:I don't know. But it it felt like 30%
Speaker 1:of your max. Right? 40?
Speaker 2:No. It's supposed to be 40, but it was heavy. Do you know I did the blues, not the yellows this time? Really? Yeah.
Speaker 2:So I think it was oh, I I tested a few things because I had a lot of reps. So first off, I did the hands the way you
Speaker 1:do it. Wait. I just wanna make it clear. He's doing a Russian program. He did it's technically conjugate.
Speaker 1:The focus was on squatting month one, and it's literally an impossible program. Then only then he now he is in the second mezzo with the focus being on barbell squat jumps. And in one session, one literally one training session, did 510 jumps.
Speaker 2:For perspective, Isaiah, what do you think is the most number of unweighted jumps you've done in a day?
Speaker 1:I so I I did the math on this. The most jumps I've taken in one week is around 600. One week of jumping, the most jumps I've taken in one session
Speaker 2:I'm saying in your life.
Speaker 1:Quick math.
Speaker 2:Is the one Is around 200.
Speaker 1:The most jumps I've taken in one session is around 200 max of
Speaker 2:The most I've ever seen you do is a 100. I've seen a 100 in two hours. I've done a 100, like, many, many, many times.
Speaker 1:That was, like, my, like, my average was, like, a two and a half hour session. I'm jumping, like, a 100 to a 130 jumps probably. So in
Speaker 2:a week, you'd hit 600 at the most? Yeah. Wow. That's pretty crazy. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah. So I did 510 in two hours. I did your weekly highest loads you've ever done in a week. I did in two hours, and it was hell. It is by far the hardest thing I've ever done mentally, psychologically.
Speaker 2:Like, physically, no. Just it was like a different level of stress psychologically. I don't even know how to fully describe it to you. I mean, it's not like I guess I could have filmed everything Isaiah told me to, but I'm like, it would have been the most boring shit ever. Like, it would have been like watching me run a marathon.
Speaker 2:That that's honest. Probably the best way I could describe it is it is it probably feels how most people feel running a marathon. You get half the thinking. Like, when you're describing it, like, I'm thinking, alright. You're doing two hours of this, and you're resting how long a minute?
Speaker 2:Well, a minute between sets and ten minutes between series. But it's like
Speaker 1:How I'm thinking about it is I remember when we used to run cross country for conditioning class, and I remember being, like, halfway through the run. And I know there's, like, forty minutes left. And I'm just like, bro, this is so sudden you start playing these, like, tricks where you're like, I'm halfway through the quarter mark, like, stuff like that. Like
Speaker 2:Yeah. But, like, the thing is the first series, I was like I'm, like, pretty out of breath. And I'm like, damn. Like, that was low key hard. Like, I just did 80 jumps in under ten minutes.
Speaker 1:Yeah. So
Speaker 2:you're like you know, you you do eight sets of 10, but you get to the tenth rep, and you're, like, you're seeing drop offs. Like, your power is probably dropping by, like, 20% by the tenth rep, and they're repeat. So you're not, like, you're not pausing and doing another rep. You're just like, boom. Boom.
Speaker 2:Boom. But it's still Pounding and pounding
Speaker 1:and pounding. Pounding
Speaker 2:and pounding. But you're you have, you know, the velos I'm hitting, because I did so many reps, could tell you, like, the beginning, I was at 1.25 for the fastest one, and it's a blue plate on each side and a blue band. By the last set going as hard as I possibly could, I might have hit one point o two, something like that for a single rep. By the last rep, I had dropped off to, like, point like, I had reps where I was point seven five. Like, I was barely jumping.
Speaker 2:That's how bad it was. That's how that's how bad it got. So the quality, like, you're going as hard as you can, but you're not it's it is truly fatigue constrained. Like, you're not gonna be able to to have any semblance of output during. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Like, it's impossible. So, like, each set took me about thirty seconds to do. Like, I measured it, and you I had 48 sets of 10. It's crazy. It's just stupid.
Speaker 2:It's crazy. So now week. That's a 10 power week.
Speaker 1:How long do you so what how long do you have in this mezzo? And then
Speaker 2:So this is I think I'm on week six of 12. I have one more squat session. Technically, I was supposed to do that yesterday, but instead, I didn't wanna do the jump squats with a barbell. Like, I wanna do it with the belt squat, and I was gonna be home for a wedding. So I was like, well, we're doing we're doing the jump squats.
Speaker 2:So I have one more squat session, and then it switches to depth jumps and barbell squat jumps still. But the the rest it's like smooth sailing from here on out. Like, it's really not bad because even if I had to do 10 sets of 10 depth jumps, like Not even close. That is nothing too as hard as this was. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Like, I did oh, that's the other thing. I did depth jumps before. I had two sets of 10 at point seven five meters, which is, like, 30 inches, which is pretty high for a depth jump. Yeah. And then I had a bunch of 43 inches or 10 at 43 inches.
Speaker 2:Maybe it was two sets of yeah. That's right. It was two sets of point seven five and one set at 1.1. So I'm jumping off the truck bed with a with a mat Yeah. And just like, yeah, letting it rip.
Speaker 2:So the the big things, like, I measured the RSIs on those. I've I've basically looked at every metric. I don't I mean, you know that. But guess what the peak watts I was hitting on the last set was? Estimated because we don't know how much weight I'm actually moving.
Speaker 2:But, anyway, it was probably, like, 2,500 to 3,000 watts still. I'm on forty eighth set, which is crazy because I didn't think it would be Battery. I yeah. Literally. I was probably fuel I probably fueled enough energy to, like, run the house.
Speaker 2:I I will say after the second set of eight
Speaker 1:This is why he's doing these, by the way. That's how much power he needs to To people at
Speaker 2:my house.
Speaker 1:Floated. We have there's
Speaker 2:no revenue coming in. Three I moved three people into my house.
Speaker 1:And they're all training to power Johnson.
Speaker 2:They're all we're all training just to power the house and fuel the AC. Dude, my knee, though
Speaker 1:do it in shifts. So, alright, Josh. You're two hours shift.
Speaker 2:Go Go ahead and do some jump squats, you fucker. My knee felt like absolute dog shit yesterday. Afterwards, I could not bend my you know, I couldn't bend my knee for, like, probably six hours without immense pain. Like, it felt like The PFP? Like, the sharp.
Speaker 2:It's, like,
Speaker 1:on top of the knee?
Speaker 2:Dude, I think it was quad tendon, honestly. Like, it's it's not bad today. But yesterday, it was painful. You know, I have blisters all over my body. Really?
Speaker 2:Yeah. Like, under my feet, my hands, I was getting blisters. Like, I was getting blisters, like, on my hands yesterday. Like, there's, like, a callus coming in here and here from holding onto the the belt squat just for, like, that many reps and my skin just getting sanded off. And down here, there's, a little blister down here.
Speaker 2:But my feet were bleeding. It was not fun. It was it was it was not fun. And so, yeah, drop offs, just so you guys know. After the third after the third series, I wanted to stop, and I was only halfway.
Speaker 2:And Ava was, like, the girl I'm talking to, she's a doctor, and she does CrossFit, and she's like, oh, no. You got it. I'm like, why did I invite you? Why did like, that's not the motivation I needed. I guess it was, but I, like, honestly didn't think it was smart.
Speaker 2:The fourth set the fourth series was dog shit. It was so bad.
Speaker 1:The fifth Bro, you have to keep going.
Speaker 2:Oh, I'm gonna Like,
Speaker 1:there's no no. I'm saying, like, in that session, there were, like this isn't even about getting better anymore. It's for the story.
Speaker 2:No. It was for the plot. I you you would
Speaker 1:have been on your deathbed being like, why didn't I do the full series?
Speaker 2:I don't think I honestly, I don't think like, I've it felt so pointless after the third series. No. Like, once I started it Look. Like, second series, dude, I don't know if I will. I just feel like a fat shit right now because I, like, aren't I'm not zinning, and I'm just gaining weight.
Speaker 2:But, anyways, I felt like I after the third series, dude, I was like, the my velas have dropped so much. Like, I don't even know why I'm still doing this. Yeah. Four and five was just for the culture. Actually, four, five, and six, honestly, was just straight for the culture.
Speaker 2:I was like, just do it. Just do it as best possible. Yeah. Just try it as hard as I could. I was probably barely hitting one point o on average velos.
Speaker 2:Like, it was just ugly as hell. It was ugly. But, anyways, I tried I had had so many reps. So I tried your method, you know, holding onto the tops. I used the handles at one point, but I was just out there for, yeah, two hours.
Speaker 2:I think each series probably took me about twelve minutes of, like, just basically straight work, and then you'd have twelve minutes rest. So, like, twenty four minutes. Basically, twenty five minutes per series, maybe a little bit less. And sometimes I would rest less because I was just like like, the last one, I'm not gonna lie, I was resting probably forty seconds. I just wanted it to be over at that point.
Speaker 2:It was so long. I just wanted it to be over. You know, Ben and Katie only stayed for the first two series, and they walked inside. Yeah. They they just got, yeah, so bored of just watching me just, like, just repetitively jump.
Speaker 2:You gotta think, one series is 80 reps, dude. That's like watching you do eight by 10. Then you wait ten minutes and you do another eight by 10, and it's just, like, boring as hell. Same movement. Like, it gets old.
Speaker 2:And then by the third set, you just you're watching it, and it just looks like it's falling apart. Four is just for the culture. Like I said, five is for the culture even more. You're just trying to get the the reps in. Felt like Murph.
Speaker 2:Know You what it felt? It felt like I was doing Murph.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I think you're gonna fly, bro. I think you're gonna get You're gonna get back into I
Speaker 2:think the the big thing will
Speaker 1:be staying light. I think if you stay light, you will fly. You will have
Speaker 2:I know how to stay light. Jumping. I know how to stay light. Hey. This is you gotta figure it out without it, man.
Speaker 2:Gotta figure it out without it. Come on. I know.
Speaker 1:Control yourself.
Speaker 2:Control your control your fucking eating. Control your urges. No, dude. It's just I I I really want to, like, impulsively eat everything right now for the dopamine hits because I don't have it anymore. So I'm just like Yeah.
Speaker 2:You know? That would that would really help. But, hopefully, I can stay lean. Oh, dude. The other thing I wanna say and tell you guys, my RSI was horrible.
Speaker 2:Horrible. Like, I'm not even gonna tell you guys because it was so freaking bad, but it can only get better. It cannot it physically cannot get worse at what it's currently Yeah.
Speaker 1:He was on he was stuck to the ground. I saw it.
Speaker 2:Stop. Don't even Looked like
Speaker 1:you jumped on on, like, a Didn't you just like, a really big duct tape.
Speaker 2:Let it go, dude. Let it go.
Speaker 1:Alright? It was like you jumped on the, you know, the pads to to grip your shoes up that the NBA players use? It's like you jumped you did the dub dub on that.
Speaker 2:Like Look. If I would've looked at the ground okay. Here's the other thing too. I was thinking about this with dub jumps is, like, if I look at the ground and I hit the ground before it hits me, I can do better. But, like, when I'm just looking straight ahead, it is so much slower.
Speaker 2:My reactivity dude, you know you know my RSI dropped by, like, point two, point actually, more. It would drop by, like, point four. That's crazy. So that's, like, if you go 2.4, it would drop to, like, two point o. So I when I look at the ground, I'm way faster on and off the ground.
Speaker 2:But if I look straight ahead, I just can't like, I I literally can't predict when the ground's gonna hit me. So it's like, you can't anticipate. You're just trying to, like, turn it on as fast as possible. But you can't like, you can't. I don't it's I don't know.
Speaker 2:Burke said not to look at the ground, though. He said don't look down.
Speaker 1:I feel like that
Speaker 2:makes you a better athlete. Not looking down?
Speaker 1:Yeah. You don't look down on on a two foot jump?
Speaker 2:I do. Yeah. I do look at the ground, actually, and then I look up.
Speaker 1:Oh, what the fuck? I don't. I'm looking at the hoop.
Speaker 2:I've done that. I've done both. What's your ground contact time?
Speaker 1:Two fives. That's fast. Two six is probably
Speaker 2:the shortest. What was your what was your ground contact time when you dropped off, like, the 70 inch one? Like, four hundred milliseconds? Was it, like, crazy long? I think it was around there.
Speaker 2:I don't know. Four hundred. Crazy. Yeah. It's it was bad when I that was roughly mine, but I was only off 40 something.
Speaker 2:You know what's crazy? When I jumped off versus stepping off, my RSI went way up. Do you know that? Really? And I could inflate my RSI by trying to be on the ground shorter because the jump height wasn't really gonna change much.
Speaker 2:It was dog shit no matter what. Oh. But it's like thing. I feel like I'm getting more overload by not looking. Yeah.
Speaker 2:But it feels like I'm landing and taking I don't know. It can't get worse. That's where I stand. I don't know what's gonna happen. I don't want anyone else to do this.
Speaker 2:I don't think I'm ever gonna have anyone try this program.
Speaker 1:What if you jump 44?
Speaker 2:Then maybe I'll have other people try. The thing is you can't do without a belt squat.
Speaker 1:No. I think you I think you could. You've always No. I've I've you.
Speaker 2:You've always been pretty, like, sensitive to compressive load. Dude, I'm Isaiah, I am telling you, even on the belt, you and my back was cramping.
Speaker 1:The hell? That's crazy.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I don't think it's possible without drugs. Yeah. I'm sure someone out there could take some drugs, and it would probably it'd probably work. Oh, today, by the way, I'm so sore.
Speaker 2:It gets it's getting worse every hour. Like, I don't need I'm jealous, bro.
Speaker 1:I love being sore.
Speaker 2:No, dude. I can't bend over and pick something up. I've never felt more, like, tired and lethargic in my life. I mean, can you tell that I'm lethargic today?
Speaker 1:Yeah. For sure.
