00;00;00;01 - 00;00;15;19
Mark McGovern
The early church didn't even call church church. They called it prayer. So if you're going, hey, where are you headed out to on Sunday morning? I'm headed to prayer. And everyone knew what that was because the primary thing you did at church was prayer. Now the primary thing we do is watch. Yeah, we watch the professionals on stage.
00;00;15;26 - 00;00;16;15
Mark McGovern
We do everything.
00;00;16;16 - 00;00;18;13
Caleb Cole
This is too convicting. Please stop.
00;00;18;14 - 00;00;37;05
Caleb Cole

00;00;37;08 - 00;00;44;24
Caleb Cole
Welcome back to the men of Faith podcast. I'm your host, Caleb Cole, and I am here with my guest and my friend.
00;00;44;24 - 00;00;46;21
Mark McGovern
Oh, yeah. Pastor. Come on.
00;00;46;24 - 00;01;11;02
Caleb Cole
Bishop. Tell him what else you got. Apostle Mark McGovern. Give it up in the chat. Give it up in your car. Wherever you're listening. Watching. Make some noise for my guy. This is Mark McGovern. Mark McGovern. Pastors experience church. They have a campus in San Francisco and in Fairfield area. Ish ish. And, Mark became a really good friend of mine.
00;01;11;04 - 00;01;13;03
Caleb Cole
Man. Going back now, probably eight years.
00;01;13;03 - 00;01;14;03
Mark McGovern
Yeah, it's been a minute now.
00;01;14;03 - 00;01;29;04
Caleb Cole
Yeah. Eight years ago, when we were young, man. That's right. With all the gray hair. Yes. Now we're more seasoned. That's fine. But me and Mark, you know, same age. Our kids are in a similar, similar age and stage, right? Both love basketball, right?
00;01;29;04 - 00;01;29;23
Mark McGovern
Hoopers?
00;01;29;23 - 00;01;51;20
Caleb Cole
Yes. And so we became fast friends at a pastors event. Yep. And then Mark has been just a great friend to me through ministry. Just encouraging me, bouncing things off with me, bro. So I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your investment in my life. My wife in Project church.
00;01;51;22 - 00;01;57;05
Caleb Cole
And you've really influenced a lot of what we've done over here. But, just so glad to have you on.
00;01;57;05 - 00;02;15;20
Mark McGovern
Preciate it, man. And I'd say the same. I mean, that's quite an intro. I hope half that's true. But, Caleb, you've been a tremendous friend as well. And, you know, a ministry that can be challenging to find friends that you trust. Yes. We've both kind of created time and space for each other. You can't force friendship, but you can create space for it.
00;02;15;20 - 00;02;19;08
Mark McGovern
And God's just blessed us with each other. So yeah, excited to be here with you today, man.
00;02;19;13 - 00;02;24;00
Caleb Cole
Yeah. And what truly bonds us is golf. Golf. And here's the clincher.
00;02;24;00 - 00;02;24;29
Mark McGovern
Yeah. Golf and.
00;02;24;29 - 00;02;32;15
Caleb Cole
Hoops. Yeah, yeah. So so tell us a little bit about, you know, you, your ministry journey, your family, just so they can get to know you.
00;02;32;17 - 00;02;53;00
Mark McGovern
So I didn't, I grew up in and around Faith. My parents, were Catholic. I grew up in a big Irish Catholic family. Yeah, they met Jesus, through the Charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church back in the 70s. Wow. And so I grew up going to a Catholic school, so mass every Wednesday, but then a non-denominational church on Sundays.
00;02;53;02 - 00;03;14;19
Mark McGovern
So kind of like this interesting mixture of faith. Had faith kind of through my parents, knew about God, knew God, but wasn't really following him. College went off the deep end, lost my college scholarship, partying my brains out, was in a really dark place. And I met a pastor actually playing basketball. And this pastor was like, really living his faith.
00;03;14;21 - 00;03;33;09
Mark McGovern
And I thought, you know, if I if I'm going to live for Jesus, if I'm really going to do this like I want to, I want to live my faith like this guy. Yeah. So this guy, started discipling me, and I was peppering him with questions and taught me how to really walk with the Lord and and have a quiet time every day and hear God's voice and experience his presence.
00;03;33;12 - 00;03;54;12
Mark McGovern
And he discipled me into revival. So I was reading all of, like, Finney and Whitfield and Evan Roberts. And when you taste that, when you're that young of the Lord, it's kind of hard to go back into, like just American Church. Yeah, that's how I was kind of ruined for revival. And then met my wife in college, and we felt the call of God to plant.
00;03;54;16 - 00;04;08;10
Mark McGovern
I had a pastor reach out to me. It's like, hey, I just sense that you're called the plant churches. And I'm like, what? I didn't know you could do that. I guess that's like entrepreneurship in the church world. I got my degree in entrepreneurship. And so it kind of just made sense. God called us out here to San Francisco.
00;04;08;10 - 00;04;34;00
Mark McGovern
We joined a pastor that had a church in the city. We planted the church's second location, and then our story really kind of turned chapters, seven years ago when our pastors moved to Mexico as missionaries. Yeah, semi-retired. And I'm praying for vision for the church. And, you know, I'm expecting God to tell me that we're going to, reach the lost or serve the poor or make disciples.
00;04;34;05 - 00;04;52;14
Mark McGovern
And I hear him so clearly say, become a praying church. And when I heard him say that, I'm like, I don't think I want to do that. Christian so often you know this Caleb, they hide behind prayer. Yeah. Like, Caleb would love for you to serve in kids church. Let me pray about that, pastor. Yeah.
00;04;52;16 - 00;05;14;05
Mark McGovern
Which basically means I'm not going to pray about it. And. No, thanks. I'm not serving kids. Sure. Yeah, yeah. And so I didn't want to lead an excuse. Making church, the darkness and the need is so significant in San Francisco. We need people of action. Right. And so, anyway, I'm wrestling with that, and, I'm reading Teresa of Avila, and she says in her book, we become our prayers.
00;05;14;07 - 00;05;27;14
Mark McGovern
And when I heard that man arrested in my heart and, and I thought, I'll never become who I'm supposed to be, our church will never become what it's supposed to be if we don't become a praying church. But then I was kind of defensive. I'm, I'm like, Lord, we pray.
00;05;27;17 - 00;05;27;29
Caleb Cole
Of course.
00;05;27;29 - 00;05;49;06
Mark McGovern
You know, I pray every day. Every Sunday we pray for the church. We pray, you know, and I had no idea what it really meant. And yeah, fast forward a couple months and, we moved to the city, sell our house near Fairfield, moved to the city, and I'm on a prayer walk my first morning. And I look up and I see Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, the same author that wrote that book that arrested my heart.
00;05;49;06 - 00;06;08;22
Mark McGovern
Yeah. We become our prayers. This church is a block from my house, and it's like the Holy Spirit's like, gotcha. You're going to become a man of prayer and build praying church. And so a couple months after that, I'm in Manhattan with John Tyson and his crew were up late one night talking revival. And he mentions his throwaway comment about this prayer room he has.
00;06;08;24 - 00;06;24;27
Mark McGovern
And I'm like, Mr. Theology has a prayer room. And he's like, it's the key to everything that God's doing in our church. And so the next morning, I did a run through Central Park and show up to the prayer room thinking it's going to be packed with people. And and it was a room. It's like half the size of this room.
00;06;24;27 - 00;06;46;11
Mark McGovern
Yeah, there's three people in there. I was the fourth and the guy leading, the guy leading, you know, his hands are shake a little bit, a little nervous. The lady on keys is a little bit off key. And, all I can remember, Caleb, is that God himself was in that room. The presence of God was so near, so close, so rich.
00;06;46;18 - 00;07;01;12
Mark McGovern
And I thought, if they can do this in the heart of Manhattan, we can do this in the heart of San Francisco. And so, I flew home, I grabbed three of our teams, sent them out to New York. The next week. I said, sit in their prayer room morning to night and come back and we'll talk. So they did.
00;07;01;14 - 00;07;17;26
Mark McGovern
They came back. They're like, we're in. What are we doing? And so we started a daily prayer in our church. And then things have just kind of taken off since then. So it's been a wild ride. Never did I ever think in a hundred years that we would be doing the prayer that we're doing the way that we're doing it.
00;07;17;26 - 00;07;23;25
Mark McGovern
Yeah. It's just simply this act of obedience that he gave us a word and we did our best to respond to it.
00;07;23;27 - 00;07;32;04
Caleb Cole
Now it's powerful. If you guys don't know, Project Church, we have three prayer rooms every Wednesday, 6 a.m., noon, 7 p.m..
00;07;32;04 - 00;07;33;18
Mark McGovern
I've been to all three.
00;07;33;21 - 00;07;59;06
Caleb Cole
Yeah, but this all stemmed honestly from me and my wife connecting with Mark. And his passion for prayer was just, like, contagious. And we went and sat in their prayer rooms. We, were able to see what God was in, in San Francisco. And, and then the Lord really began to stir us. And so we started a little different in that, like, we just did a prayer room with our staff for a year.
00;07;59;11 - 00;08;00;21
Caleb Cole
Yeah. Because we that's a great.
00;08;00;21 - 00;08;01;07
Mark McGovern
Way to start.
00;08;01;08 - 00;08;26;24
Caleb Cole
Yeah. We just realized like our team wasn't a praying team. We weren't like praying pastors. I mean, of course we pray, right? We pray on our own. We pray at home. But it wasn't something we were really committed to together. Yep. And so for a year we did a noon prayer room, just our staff. Great. One hour together and sometimes it was great and sometimes it was terrible, and sometimes it was powerful and sometimes it was a dud, you know?
00;08;26;24 - 00;08;45;11
Caleb Cole
Yeah. And and Elisa felt that way. Right, right. But obviously it's not based on feelings, it's obedience. And, and so out of that, though, we were like, all right, let's open it up for the church. Yep. And then we started inviting people, and then it was like, we need to do this more. Wow. Because not everyone can come at noon on a Wednesday.
00;08;45;11 - 00;09;03;16
Caleb Cole
It's exactly right. So then we started doing the morning that evening. And now every week, you know, we have three prayer rooms every Wednesday. And so and I know you guys are going to more than that, but, we'll catch up maybe someday. Yeah. But but I just think, like, man, thank you for being obedient to what the Lord stirred in your heart all those years ago, because it's influenced us.
00;09;03;18 - 00;09;26;27
Caleb Cole
But then I also know it's carried over and, you know, you're now discipling all these other pastors in churches. You have cohorts of leading churches to become praying churches. And, man, I'm just so inspired and thankful that you're leading a prayer movement in our country, not just in the north, Northern California. I don't know about that. Well, I know you got people from everywhere now, so.
00;09;27;03 - 00;09;43;22
Mark McGovern
We're grateful for all that God's doing. And we had no idea when he said, become a praying church, right, that it was going to be this, if I would've known that, I would have said no to it. But he knows how to tell us just enough to get us to say yes. And then, you know, he's really hard to say no to.
00;09;43;24 - 00;09;50;26
Mark McGovern
Yes. So when you say yes, you just kind of find yourself continuing to say yes and you're just blown away by what he does.
00;09;50;29 - 00;10;00;17
Caleb Cole
Well, if I would have known, it was probably now I'm thinking about it, it was probably right before you went to New York that you and I became friends.
00;10;00;17 - 00;10;02;20
Mark McGovern
Because it was it was it was like a year before that. Yeah.
00;10;02;20 - 00;10;04;26
Caleb Cole
Because I knew you had just taken over the church.
00;10;04;26 - 00;10;05;18
Mark McGovern
Yep.
00;10;05;20 - 00;10;18;28
Caleb Cole
And that was like eight years ago. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then it was like the next year you went to New York and you started talking about all this. I'm like, I don't know if I would have become your friend if this had started the year before, I'd have been, oh, no, that's a weird prayer guy. That's right.
00;10;18;28 - 00;10;20;12
Caleb Cole
Totally. I don't want that in my life.
00;10;20;12 - 00;10;23;21
Mark McGovern
I probably wouldn't have been my friend either. Okay.
00;10;23;23 - 00;10;40;20
Caleb Cole
But no, God knew what he was doing. And, I think, you know, we have a lot of men that. Listen, actually, some wives listen to. Okay, to the men of Faith podcast. But I think today, like, I would love for you to just encourage these guys in, in what it means to be a man of God who prays.
00;10;40;20 - 00;10;58;05
Caleb Cole
Yeah. And obviously we have opportunity for them here for those that are in Sacramento. Yeah. But I think in general, like you're leading people into prayer as a lifestyle, not just come to a prayer room. Yeah, but what does it mean to be a person of prayer? Yeah. And so, you know, you got a lot of game.
00;10;58;05 - 00;11;01;13
Caleb Cole
Give these guys game as to how they can prioritize prayer in their life.
00;11;01;13 - 00;11;26;02
Mark McGovern
Sure. Yeah. So first of all, when we talk about prayer, oftentimes the prayer settings that, are set up for men in church, like don't make sense. Yeah. Like they they're not masculine. The songs that we sing, even the esthetics in a room can make it feel like this wasn't set up for me. And then if we look at prayer predominantly, it's always women leading it.
00;11;26;05 - 00;11;46;12
Mark McGovern
Yeah. It's like, you know, you don't hear about praying daddies. You hear about praying mamas, right? Sure. So it's almost kind of modeled that the women seem to be more faithful in prayer, have a more rich, vibrant prayer life. And let's just be honest, sometimes praying mamas can be intimidating, right? They're praying verses. I don't like Ezekiel and Revelation and you're like, man, I don't know what to do with that.
00;11;46;15 - 00;12;13;09
Mark McGovern
Yeah. Right. And so we have to like, kind of unlearn some of that traditional thinking around prayer and really strip it down to what does Jesus invite us to in prayer as he invites us to discover his heart? Yeah. Invites us to hear his voice. He invites us to be led by him, to give us wisdom. And so in our church, what we did is we started, like you did with just praying with our staff.
00;12;13;12 - 00;12;27;12
Mark McGovern
And then we started an evening prayer in. And we did Tuesday morning men's prayer. We still do it every Tuesday morning. The first Tuesday of every month. We invite all the men in the church to come, and we have breakfast for them at the end. Oh, wow. And normally we. Tuesday. No, no, no. First Tuesday, the.
00;12;27;14 - 00;12;28;09
Caleb Cole
First Tuesday of the month.
00;12;28;09 - 00;12;49;07
Mark McGovern
And normally what will happen is guys aren't coming. Yeah. Then if they know there's a breakfast burrito. Heck yeah. From Cafe Tazo in the mission. That's right. Then they come and then what happens is prayer is mostly caught not taught. So you just get in the room around others that pray like God is listening. Yeah. Pray like he's eager to answer.
00;12;49;07 - 00;13;07;18
Mark McGovern
Pray like something's going to happen. And that spirit of faith and expectancy, it catches them. And then they find themselves like, man I want to pray like I want to see God do something. I, I don't want to live according to my own ability. That's that's a very low ceiling. I want to live according to what God's able to do.
00;13;07;20 - 00;13;26;14
Mark McGovern
Yeah, right. And so then what happens is growth happens. The other thing is Jesus is teaching. We know the disciples asked Jesus, teach us to pray. Now think about this. They could have asked Jesus to teach them anything. You know, teach me how to preach. Teach me how to plan a church. Teach me how to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons.
00;13;26;17 - 00;13;32;11
Mark McGovern
Personally, I would ask Jesus like, hey, can you teach me how to turn that water to wine? That sounds like a really good business model.
00;13;32;13 - 00;13;33;29
Caleb Cole
Teach me how to get rich, right?
00;13;34;05 - 00;13;54;02
Mark McGovern
I mean, there's some high profit margins on water to wine. Yeah. And but that's not what they asked. The one thing they asked Jesus was teach us to pray. Now, why did they ask that? Because they had been around Jesus's prayer life and they thought to themselves, you know what? I've never heard anyone pray like him. My rabbi, as a kid growing up in church, didn't pray like that.
00;13;54;07 - 00;14;15;17
Mark McGovern
My mom and dad didn't like that. My grandma, who could really pray, she and pray like that. Something about the way that Jesus prayed was, was like prayer they'd never heard or experienced before. Yeah. So they knew the secret sauce to Jesus ministry was his intimacy with God through prayer. And so they said, teach us to pray. Now it's interesting is Jesus's response to that is known as the Lord's Prayer.
00;14;15;21 - 00;14;21;25
Mark McGovern
But actually, so everybody knows it's not actually the Lord's Prayer. It's actually the disciples prayer. Yeah. Because it's the prayer that he teach.
00;14;21;27 - 00;14;22;08
Caleb Cole
The.
00;14;22;10 - 00;14;46;03
Mark McGovern
Disciples to pray, not himself. Right. And and so we know in 1200 we got all the chapters and verses and like 14, 1500 we got like the headings, but the headings aren't canonized. They're not like Scripture, right. So the Lord's Prayer is actually the disciples prayer. And the way he teaches this prayer is very interesting is it's like the most un-American prayer, because all of it is us.
00;14;46;03 - 00;15;10;12
Mark McGovern
And our none of it is either me. So he literally says, right, give us this day our daily bread. He says that we're to pray his kingdom come, not thy kingdom come. That we're to pray our father, not my father, that we're to pray for our trespasses, our sins, our temptation, our deliverance from evil. That none of it is me or I.
00;15;10;12 - 00;15;17;29
Mark McGovern
All of it is us and our. So we we have taken prayer in in the West, just like Bible reading, and we've privatized it.
00;15;18;05 - 00;15;19;15
Caleb Cole
We've individualistic.
00;15;19;15 - 00;15;38;11
Mark McGovern
Individualistic. So the early church, the only way they could read scripture was in community, right? Of course, there weren't letters mass produced, or there were apps on phones like the only way you could read scripture was being in community with believers. Well, in the same way that's how they prayed. So they would pray at nine a am in the temple, 3 p.m. in the temple, and then house to house at night.
00;15;38;11 - 00;15;59;25
Mark McGovern
They'd receive communion, break bread, share a meal, and pray together. So think about it 60 to 90 times a month. Believers in the early church are coming together to pray. Now fast forward to where we are today. The average Christian in America goes to church 1.4 times a month, and in those 1.4 times a month, Caleb, they listen to the professional on stage.
00;15;59;25 - 00;16;20;14
Mark McGovern
Pray they themselves don't pray the early church. We're good. We're good at well, very good. We think we are. What what's amazing about that, though, is the early church didn't even call church. Church. They called it prayer. So if you're going, hey, where are you headed out to on Sunday morning? I'm headed to prayer. And everyone knew what that was because the primary thing you did at church was pray.
00;16;20;17 - 00;16;25;21
Mark McGovern
Now the primary thing we do is watch. Yeah, we watch the professionals on stage. We do everything.
00;16;25;21 - 00;16;27;18
Caleb Cole
This is to convicting. Please stop.
00;16;27;21 - 00;16;45;03
Mark McGovern
You know it's real, man. It's real. But the beauty of it is when people get activated in prayer, we activate all the faith in the room. We break into small groups and pray. We create an invitation for people to come up and pray. Brief and bold prayers. We're not looking to have you preach. We're looking to have you pray right when we do this.
00;16;45;03 - 00;17;03;01
Mark McGovern
It activates faith in the room and the beauty of praying in communal prayer is when I pray with you, Caleb, I hear a conviction and a faith in your voice that I myself don't have. Yes, I hear a burden, I hear pain, I hear things that I'm not myself carrying, and it causes my heart to be knit together in love with you.
00;17;03;03 - 00;17;18;25
Mark McGovern
And so the way we learn how to pray is not by praying by yourself in the secret place. The learn the way we learn how to pray is actually praying with others in community. So men you want to grow in prayer. You don't read books on prayer. Listen to podcasts on prayer. What we're talking about, it can help you a little bit.
00;17;18;25 - 00;17;19;17
Caleb Cole
You pray.
00;17;19;20 - 00;17;38;21
Mark McGovern
That's right. The way you learn how to pray is praying well. And the best way you learn how to pray is by praying with other believers. Pray with your wife. Pray with your kids. Pray with brothers. Pray at the men's prayer gathering you have. Pray morning in the night here on Wednesdays like there are all these. Pray online.
00;17;38;21 - 00;17;57;17
Mark McGovern
Pray in person. Go on a prayer. Walk with somebody else. Like there's a hundred different ways to pray. But as you pray continually, that's the key is consistency. It's not about praying an hour every day. It's about praying in community as often as you can. If you can pray ten minutes with another believer every day, you will ten x your prayer life, right?
00;17;57;24 - 00;18;12;00
Mark McGovern
But what we try to do is kind of like fasting. We do 21 days of fasting in a year, and then we don't fasting for the rest of the year. It's actually better to fast one day a week, right every week for 52 weeks, than to go on a ten day fast, and then not do it again for the rest of the year.
00;18;12;02 - 00;18;25;00
Mark McGovern
Right? So it's the consistency in community that's the key because we hear God praying through other people when we pray in communal prayer.
00;18;25;03 - 00;18;27;24
Caleb Cole
Okay. I don't even know where to go from all that.
00;18;27;24 - 00;18;32;10
Mark McGovern
So actually let's talk about this because because you talked about like talk to the men.
00;18;32;12 - 00;18;33;22
Caleb Cole
I'm a deer in the headlights.
00;18;33;23 - 00;18;50;17
Mark McGovern
No, no no Caleb, you're a man of prayer. I'm just you've grown tremendously in prayer. And you're leading. You're leading a church that's becoming a praying. Absolutely none of us arrive in prayer, right? Like, I love the way the apostle Paul said it. He said, he's the apostle of prayer. And in talking about prayer, this is what he says.
00;18;50;24 - 00;19;12;26
Mark McGovern
We do not know how to pray as we ought. Literally what he says is y'all. You don't know how to pray, right. Yeah. So prayer starts with us acknowledging we don't know how to pray. Jesus would you teach us how to pray? Just like the disciples teach us how to pray. Teach us how to pray for our church.
00;19;13;03 - 00;19;30;10
Mark McGovern
Teach us how to pray for our wife, our children. Teach us how to pray for my career, our finances. Teach us how to pray for our health. Teach us how to pray for provision. Teach us how to pray for our future. He is so willing to teach. He loves to teach. He's the best teacher. Nobody's better at prayer than Jesus.
00;19;30;15 - 00;19;38;18
Mark McGovern
So he's willing to teach. But we've got to take that humble posture of Lord, teach us to pray. And as we do that, he will. He teaches us.
00;19;38;24 - 00;19;58;14
Caleb Cole
So the most powerful thing I think, that I've heard today from you is just the reality of us praying together, being how we grow in our prayer life 100%. Most people are trying to figure out how to be better prayer warriors by them, by themselves.
00;19;58;14 - 00;20;07;08
Mark McGovern
And let's be honest, it's just like going to the gym lifting weights by yourself. Yeah, yeah, it works a little bit. It does work. And then you get sick or you miss because you have a meeting.
00;20;07;13 - 00;20;07;29
Caleb Cole
Wagon, you.
00;20;08;00 - 00;20;13;29
Mark McGovern
Fall, you got nobody cheering you on. No one there. Spot that bench press. 225 I saw that Caleb got.
00;20;13;29 - 00;20;14;09
Caleb Cole
That.
00;20;14;11 - 00;20;22;19
Mark McGovern
Viral last week with that. 225 five double plays. You skinny boy over here just going swole patrol on us trying.
00;20;22;21 - 00;20;23;12
Caleb Cole
Right?
00;20;23;14 - 00;20;36;23
Mark McGovern
But you're exactly right. It's like it's that same analogy. Like your prayer life was designed to fail. Yes, if it was by yourself. Yes. It thrives in community. Praying with and for each other. Right. That's where it happens.
00;20;36;23 - 00;20;44;07
Caleb Cole
Well, in what I see is your church, and even our church right now is prioritizing spaces.
00;20;44;07 - 00;20;44;18
Mark McGovern
That's it.
00;20;44;19 - 00;20;57;05
Caleb Cole
Where people can pray together. That's right. And I think this is where the church as a whole is missing. It is. We're not creating those environments. Yep. And people have a hard time, especially in our culture right now with how busy we all are.
00;20;57;07 - 00;20;57;23
Mark McGovern
100%.
00;20;57;24 - 00;21;09;28
Caleb Cole
To find that space or place. I mean, you children go going a prayer that's great. And, for guys, we don't necessarily do that. My wife goes on prayer walks with her girlfriends all the time, and I'm like, why don't guys do that?
00;21;10;01 - 00;21;14;21
Mark McGovern
It's, you got to have a dog. Otherwise, it's kind of weird. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But.
00;21;14;24 - 00;21;36;13
Caleb Cole
Like for us, we we do every Tuesday morning as well. We have men's and women's prayer zoom. Awesome. And so, you know, right now the girls have 15 to 20. Great. And we have 5 to 7. Yep. Right. And so even that example yeah is like oh yeah. It's pretty typical of what you were saying earlier. It's like oh the praying mamas.
00;21;36;13 - 00;21;52;02
Caleb Cole
Yep. Now what's cool is our prayer rooms actually lately are have more men in them. More women. That's right. The other day I was in the noon and it was like 75% men. Yeah, I had like 25. Wow. And I was like, all right, let's go. Like, the guys are starting to pray.
00;21;52;03 - 00;22;11;19
Mark McGovern
And I've learned, Caleb, men are hungry to learn how to pray. Yes. Like it. We feel kind of embarrassed and underequipped when like we're in a gathering like that and the women are the ones praying with authority. We do not have a strong female problem. We want the women to be strong. We want them to leave. We want their intercession and prayers.
00;22;11;24 - 00;22;32;18
Mark McGovern
Well, what we have is we have a problem where men don't know how to take steps. But what I've seen, like you're talking, is once men start praying just a little bit with other men, other believers, it's amazing how quickly they grow and how they get that confidence, that courage, that conviction, that faith in prayer. It's it's beautiful.
00;22;32;25 - 00;22;43;00
Caleb Cole
Yeah. What's interesting is just last week we had our Tuesday morning prayer. There were like seven of us. Yep. And we do it every Tuesday morning, 630 on zoom. So actually, for all the guys that go to probably on.
00;22;43;00 - 00;22;44;05
Mark McGovern
Their get on there.
00;22;44;08 - 00;22;59;25
Caleb Cole
Go on the Church Center app right now and under groups is a Tuesday morning prayer group. You can jump on six or even if you just got to, you want to listen. Maybe you're driving to work. Yeah. There's a couple guys that are driving. Yeah. And they just listen. It's perfect. Right? Right. Yeah. But a guy last week, he prayed.
00;22;59;27 - 00;23;21;12
Caleb Cole
And then after the call he texted me. He's like, hey man, I'm sorry about that prayer. I was like, yeah, I was just rambling and I was distracted and I was like, bro. What? Like, it never even crossed my mind that like, something was wrong with your prayer. I actually thought like it was a great prayer. Sure. But I think that's how so many of us men feel like we're insecure.
00;23;21;14 - 00;23;36;08
Caleb Cole
We got to say the right thing. I got to do it the right way. And yeah, and I'm just like, no, actually, you know, you just pray what God puts on your heart, right? Obviously you practice it. You get better at it. Yeah. Yeah, but but it's not even about being good. No, we're not professionals.
00;23;36;08 - 00;23;53;25
Mark McGovern
Yeah. That's all the enemy, right? The enemy wants to shut us down to make us feel insecure and like we don't know what we're doing. Like, it all starts with us acknowledging that we don't know how to pray. Yeah. Jesus, teach me how to pray. Teresa of Avila said it like this. That we're all beginners at prayer.
00;23;53;28 - 00;24;15;24
Mark McGovern
None of us ever, like, graduate with a PhD in prayer. And like, we arrive, right? Like, no, as we acknowledge that we need to learn and we ask, Jesus teaches he's faithful. Teach us. And to your point, Caleb, it's really about being honest. Yes, the key to vibrant faith in prayer is just honesty. I'm honest with how much I need God.
00;24;15;27 - 00;24;34;03
Mark McGovern
I'm honest with with where I am and the gap between where I am, where I feel like God's calling me to be and is. We're just honest with God. He he shows up, he answers. And you mentioned spaces earlier. We see this a lot in our church. Any time you create space for God, he fills it with more of himself.
00;24;34;10 - 00;24;53;06
Mark McGovern
Yes. And what we want is his presence. What we want is more of God. If we have more of God in our prayer gatherings, we'll have more of God in our Sunday gatherings. If we have more of God in our Sunday gatherings, we'll have more of God in our people. Monday through Saturday, in the workplace, in school, on campus, in our neighborhood, at the grocery store, at the gym.
00;24;53;10 - 00;25;16;10
Mark McGovern
Like we need more of God everywhere. If we create space for more of God in prayer that we then access more of God everywhere else outside of that time in prayer. And so you're exactly right. We we do all these zoom prayer gatherings with pray, the Bay, the prayer movement in the Bay area. And, we have ten zooms a week at 8 a.m. and at noon, and people zoom in from everywhere.
00;25;16;10 - 00;25;36;20
Mark McGovern
Some people are commuting, traveling on a prayer walk, whatever it may be, and it's communal prayer. You hear other people praying. Yeah. And sometimes we get stuck in prayer. And that's why it's so powerful to be praying with other people. Because when we feel like we got nothing else to pray, somebody else pray something. And then there's something that we hear and their prayer that sets off something in us, and then it gets us going.
00;25;36;23 - 00;25;54;28
Mark McGovern
And what we're always trying to do is activate faith in prayer. So you mentioned the guy that kind of rambled a little bit. We've all done that, right. Like we don't know how to lay in the plane. Right. But what we say is this is we want to pray strong. Not long. We want to pray brief and bold, and we want to give everybody an opportunity to pray as many times as they'd like.
00;25;55;05 - 00;26;15;24
Mark McGovern
It's better that you pray three different times. Then pray one three minute prayer because you know how guys are. Especially we check out after about 20s, right? Like we're instantly going to the next thing. Yeah. And so we, we want to kind of like popcorn around the room in these gatherings to where everybody's being activated, these short, potent, powerful prayers.
00;26;16;00 - 00;26;33;07
Mark McGovern
And then we want to base it on Scripture. So when we have Scripture to pray through, if there's a section of usually we go 8 to 12 verses of the Bible. We're praying for the church, we're praying for pastors, we're praying for, the Bay or the city, the region that you're in. And we're praying for the lost by name.
00;26;33;10 - 00;26;53;22
Mark McGovern
And when we pray that way, it's just amazing how God prays through people. And the other thing that's really key is we know, according to Romans eight that Jesus is the prayer leader of heaven. The Bible says that he seated at the right hand of the father, living to make intercession for us. He is the shining one. He is the one that radiates in joy.
00;26;53;25 - 00;27;11;22
Mark McGovern
He loves to pray for us. He's been praying for you every moment of your life, men, every moment of your life. Jesus been praying for you. So the beauty of this is, is we're not starting some random prayer meeting, right? We're joining the one that's been going on in heaven for thousands of years. Yeah, that's all we're doing.
00;27;11;22 - 00;27;13;02
Caleb Cole
And that's encouraging because.
00;27;13;02 - 00;27;28;11
Mark McGovern
It takes all the pressure off. Yes, he's the one doing the praying. He's praying for us. But he really wants to pray with us. How do we come alongside Jesus? What is he praying? What is he wanting to do? And early on, when we were doing these prayer meetings, basically all we prayed for is like our churches needs.
00;27;28;19 - 00;27;45;05
Mark McGovern
What are all the needs? Let's list them out. Let's pray over them. We pray so differently now because we're learning how to pray with Jesus, and there are things that he has on his heart that he wants to entrust to us to pray with him. And that's when the prayer gatherings become so fun and exciting. You have no idea what's going to come.
00;27;45;08 - 00;27;55;00
Mark McGovern
So it's not this preset thing. Every time I come in, we're ready to pray certain scripture, but really, it's him leading us through that and him sharing with us what's on his heart.
00;27;55;02 - 00;28;19;21
Caleb Cole
Yeah, my hope today. You know, even in having you here, Mark was just set. The guys listening, watching, whatever platform they're on would feel the the passion, the hunger that you carry for prayer. But also that it would be something that motivates them to say, hey, I know I need to pray more. I know I need to partner with heaven a try and partner with Jesus.
00;28;19;22 - 00;28;20;13
Mark McGovern
Amen.
00;28;20;15 - 00;28;43;00
Caleb Cole
And interceding for my city. Yeah. For my lost friends and family. For my church. Yep. For other pastors and leaders. For what God's doing in in this country. And what you said at the beginning, which was like you were your heart was arrested for revival. And I think ultimately that we pray knowing that God, he responds to the cries of their people.
00;28;43;02 - 00;28;43;21
Mark McGovern
Absolutely.
00;28;43;21 - 00;29;03;22
Caleb Cole
And I think that's what people miss is like, obviously it's intimacy and it's connection. Yeah. And it's us getting to know him more. And it's right him hearing from us in a different way. Right. He knows all our thoughts anyways. Yeah. But I think there's this part that we miss is that like we can move the heart of God with prayer.
00;29;03;25 - 00;29;48;09
Mark McGovern
He's eager to answer. Yes. We had a guy last week and firm said, Lord, we wouldn't even be here if you didn't answer right? Like if you didn't answer, the prayer room wouldn't even exist. The only reason exists is because you answer and he's eager to answer. He's more than willing to answer. He's more ready to answer than we are to pray right?
00;29;48;12 - 00;30;13;02
Mark McGovern
Yep. I think it is. It is. So it's as you take steps in joining Jesus in prayer and hearing his prayers and sensing what he's wanting to do in the room. Yeah, he actually reveals himself through that. And so you do you grow closer to him because, you know, it says like this, that the children of Israel knew his acts.
00;30;13;04 - 00;30;20;23
Mark McGovern
Moses knew his ways. So Moses had this deeper intimacy with God. Yeah. Meeting with him face to face.
00;30;21;01 - 00;30;21;12
Caleb Cole
Knew his.
00;30;21;12 - 00;30;39;07
Mark McGovern
Heart. That's right. He knew what he was really like, knew what he wanted, knew, knew how he wanted to go about doing and making his will happen. And that's just what what happens is, as you grow in prayer, you just get closer to God. You just know him more. You're like, oh yeah, that's exactly the way he would do it.
00;30;39;12 - 00;30;59;23
Mark McGovern
Yeah. Oh yeah, that makes sense. That's that's that sounds like him. That sounds like something he would do or something he would want to partner with me about. Right. And so in praying and seeking him, you get to know him more. But you also see him answer and he shows up and he and he answers way beyond anything that you could ever anticipate or expect.
00;30;59;28 - 00;31;13;03
Caleb Cole
You saying that about Israel. It just like spoke to me. The difference between walking in the ways of God and walking in rebellion against God, which is like what Israel was doing right, well.
00;31;13;03 - 00;31;36;16
Mark McGovern
And really carelessness, right, is rebellion for sure. Disobedient to Jesus. Like I want to talk to you, I want to be close to you. And when we refuse to be perilous. Yeah. That's right. And when we when we refuse to become people of prayer and meet him in prayer, slowly our heart wanders and drifts. And the next thing you know, we don't sense in him.
00;31;36;16 - 00;31;53;18
Mark McGovern
He feels distant. He didn't go anywhere. We're the ones that walked away. He says. Draw near to me and then you'll recognize that I'm already near to you. Right draw near to me and I'll draw near to you. He's already near to us, but it's in us coming to him in prayer that we recognize how close he is.
00;31;53;20 - 00;32;02;22
Mark McGovern
And yeah, he hates distance. Yeah, he wants to be close to all of us. He he wants to lead us and help us and guide us. He has so many gifts he wants to give us.
00;32;02;23 - 00;32;07;13
Caleb Cole
It's so good. So one last angle. I want to come at this. Yeah. Before we give them their call.
00;32;07;13 - 00;32;08;01
Mark McGovern
A call up?
00;32;08;03 - 00;32;27;02
Caleb Cole
Yes. Not call out. Is this, these two things that I think go hand in hand, but I want to hear your perspective of prayer in the word. Yeah, because ultimately I see prayer warriors who prioritize prayer. But not really in the word. And then I see people who love the word. Yeah. But don't.
00;32;27;02 - 00;32;48;21
Mark McGovern
Pray. Yeah. Well you heard that as a kid right. It was, it was if you're all word no spirit you dry up. If you're all spirit, no word, you blow up. And if your spirit and word you grow up. Oh, hello. Yeah. That's right. So if you think about this, like, a lot of times prayer people and this was not kind of my upbringing.
00;32;48;21 - 00;33;03;12
Mark McGovern
Yeah. Like I didn't even know that there was like a prayer movement thing. Like I'm late to the game on all this stuff. But it tends to be kind of the prophetic prayer people. Yes, can get a little granola, a little little fruit flakes and nuts.
00;33;03;14 - 00;33;04;07
Caleb Cole
And you put it on.
00;33;04;08 - 00;33;27;03
Mark McGovern
Yeah, it just get a little weird. Little weird. Right? But the word doesn't make you weird. No, the word does not make you weird. The word makes you wise. Right? And so we want to pray from the scripture. The other thing is, is like primarily when God speaks to us, he speaks to us from the Scripture. Yes, he is one of the things we say like this is Jesus speaks in phrases, not pages.
00;33;27;06 - 00;33;48;05
Mark McGovern
Yes, right. So we see throughout Scripture the way he speaks to his people is usually short little sentences or phrases. It's not like 29 pages long, right? So in praying, we tell people that to like, hey, if we're joining Jesus in prayer, he prays phrases, not pages. So we're not looking to pray 27 minutes here, dude. Like, let's keep it to 30s and let's move on.
00;33;48;08 - 00;34;06;05
Mark McGovern
So what the word does is it grounds you? Yeah. It makes you solid. There's there's foundation. It's not wishy washy. Primarily, people pray based on their greatest felt need in their feelings. The number one thing I hear from people come into our prayer I'll see that they start coming. And then normally they come like once a week.
00;34;06;12 - 00;34;20;25
Mark McGovern
We're morning, noon and night, five days, weeks or 15 prayer rooms a week in the heart of the mission in the city. And then what happens is they start coming once, once a week, and then it's a couple times a week, and then a lot of them will start coming, like once a day to one of those three, three morning, noon or night prayer.
00;34;20;27 - 00;34;40;06
Mark McGovern
And then I ask them this question and I'm like, so I see you're here quite a bit. Like what's happening in your life? Like, how are you praying? And they're like, they get this big smile on their face and they say, the number one thing that's changed is when I first started coming to the prayer room, I primarily 99% of the time prayed for myself.
00;34;40;10 - 00;35;03;28
Mark McGovern
Yeah, I was basically praying for me. Now I primarily pray for others. Communal prayer sets us free from self. Yes, it opens us to what God is praying for others, not just me. So then I ask him. I follow up this question and I always got some. I'm like, so is God answering your prayers less for yourself or more?
00;35;04;00 - 00;35;26;11
Mark McGovern
And they always have this big smile and they're like, oh my gosh, he's answering the the prayers for myself way more than he was before, even though I'm praying way less for myself than I was before. Wow. Why? Because I'm praying for others way more than I'm praying for myself. I'm praying for what? It's on God's heart. It's almost like Matthew 633 seek first the kingdom and all these things will be added.
00;35;26;12 - 00;35;33;12
Mark McGovern
Yeah, it's almost like pray for others with Jesus and everything you would pray for yourself. He'll just bring it. You won't even have to pray for it. He just brings it to you.
00;35;33;12 - 00;35;54;25
Caleb Cole
Yeah man, I love that. So good. Well, I think that we've been challenged, you know, today, I hope the men have. And I believe they have to level up in some way in prayer. And I think, partnering in prayer with others, other men. Some of the ladies that are listening as well, other ladies. So we want to give them a call up to it.
00;35;54;25 - 00;36;18;23
Caleb Cole
Mark. So, so I'll let you think for a minute, but my call up, first to the man is Brotherhood. Here's my call up. Join our prayer zoom on Tuesday morning out of ten. Or attend one prayer room a week. Do it. That's my encouragement. Either Tuesday morning, morning, new night. I think this will begin the process of you learning to pray with others in community.
00;36;18;24 - 00;36;30;11
Caleb Cole
Yeah. And, if you go to church, obviously this opportunity for you, if you don't and maybe you're watching from somewhere, find a prayer room, a prayer gathering that you can get in the room with other believers and pray together.
00;36;30;17 - 00;36;51;17
Mark McGovern
Right? Absolutely. I call it the communal prayer is going to ten your prayer life boom. And then you're going to find yourself on your own hearing from God, praying for others, praying for your family, praying for your future. It just it's like a snowball effect. There's just momentum in it. My call up for the guys is, every morning the first thing you do, the first thing you do is not turn on that phone.
00;36;51;24 - 00;37;09;28
Mark McGovern
Let's go. It's not. Check the box scores. It's not. Look at your crypto. It's not. Check email for work. The first thing you do is you get on your knees and you worship God, and you just thank him. Just take a minute of gratitude, thanking him. This is how I start. Every morning. I start in worship, and then I get on my knees before the Lord.
00;37;09;28 - 00;37;27;11
Mark McGovern
And I ask him this, said, Lord, the one you love is listening. Hey, I know you love me. Yeah. What do you want to talk to me about? Is there anything you want to say? Prayer starts with listening. Listening? It doesn't start with me talking or telling God what to do. Prayer starts with listening. So, man, I want to encourage you.
00;37;27;15 - 00;37;47;12
Mark McGovern
Start every morning in worship. Some song that the Lord would put on your heart and then start on your knees listening to God. But what do you want to talk to me about? And it's amazing how different things I want to talk to you about. Sometimes it's my attitude, sometimes it's my day and my schedule. Sometimes it's a scripture, sometimes it's repentance.
00;37;47;20 - 00;38;01;12
Mark McGovern
Something that that I raise my voice with the kids, or I said something that was rude, or I could have been cut. Sometimes it's how I'm withholding myself where I could give so much to others. And I'm not like, he is so faithful and he's so kind and patient. He's not going to talk to me about 27 things.
00;38;01;17 - 00;38;20;04
Mark McGovern
He'll talk to me about one thing, and what that does is you starting your day, having heard from God. Everything else flows from there. Right? And these guys, I'm telling you guys, you get into communal prayer, things begin to happen. And for the married gentleman, I'm going to tell you right now, pray with your wife. We'll just love you more.
00;38;20;06 - 00;38;37;03
Mark McGovern
If you become a man of prayer. Like that's probably her number one prayer for you is for you to take steps in prayer. Because as men of God, we become men of prayer. We live up to our calling in the fullness of our potential. And your wife's going to feel protected. She's going to feel covered. Your kids are going to see men.
00;38;37;03 - 00;38;50;29
Mark McGovern
Something's different about dad. This is what happened in my own life. Right? And so prayer starts with listening. Start on your knees listening to God. What does he want to talk about? Let him kick off the prayer time between you and him. Not you dictating it, letting him lead.
00;38;51;01 - 00;39;13;05
Caleb Cole
It's been cool, you know. I know you do this with your boys, but I started, the Primal Path with my son. Yeah. And, you know, there's a little devotion in the morning. Question. Yep. And, then we we actually have been. We pray together. Great. And just hearing him, you know, which I've heard him pray over dinner, you know, like, that's pretty cookie cutter.
00;39;13;05 - 00;39;33;17
Caleb Cole
Sure. But we we hit a topic and then it's like, all right, bro, you pray and then I'll pray. Yeah. And just hearing him like expressing the little, you know, I don't wanna say elementary, but he's still a boy. Right. And his processing of that topic and prayer to the Lord like it encouraged my faith. Huge. It made me want to pray more prayers.
00;39;33;17 - 00;39;41;04
Caleb Cole
And I'm like, dude, this little dude is inspiring me. And so that's just an example of what I tried praying. What? Praying together.
00;39;41;08 - 00;40;02;11
Mark McGovern
You nailed it on the head. You nailed it on the head. I get most inspired oftentimes by the youngest people in the prayer room. Yeah, we have middle schoolers and high schoolers that come to our 6 a.m. prayer room before going to school. Because they're hungry. Yeah. And and I mean they've been following Jesus way less time than I have.
00;40;02;13 - 00;40;09;06
Mark McGovern
But they inspire me so much because they're so honest and it's real and raw and authentic. It's powerful man.
00;40;09;08 - 00;40;20;03
Caleb Cole
Yeah. It's that authenticity that they, they're, they're not worried as much about saying all the right thing trial which tackle. Well hey, man, thanks for joining me. Well, we got to pray over them.
00;40;20;10 - 00;40;25;19
Mark McGovern
We can't. Yeah, we got to, like, pray over these guys. You can't just, like, cancel me right now, brother. Come on, can I. Can I get a prayer?
00;40;25;20 - 00;40;26;05
Caleb Cole
Pray.
00;40;26;06 - 00;40;44;29
Mark McGovern
All right. Father, we thank you for these men. And we ask, Lord, that the spirit of prayer will come upon every man that's listening, that you'd give them a deep, burning desire to know you, to draw close to you, to create space for you. Jesus, we thank you that you're the best rabbi and teacher. Nobody teaches prayer better than you.
00;40;45;02 - 00;41;02;04
Mark McGovern
Would you teach our men how to pray? And would you disciple us, shape us, and form us to become men of prayer? That we would become our prayers? Lord, we praise you, and we thank you that you're eager to answer and that you're going to show up in these men's lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
00;41;02;10 - 00;41;24;02
Caleb Cole
Yes. And Lord, I just pray over Mark, experience, church and all the prayer that they're leading God that it it would be blessed, favored as it already is, but even more so, Lord, to come on in their influence and project churches, prayer and prayer rooms. Lord, I just pray for a move of God. Your spirits. I pray for a move of God in these men's prayer lives.
00;41;24;04 - 00;41;32;04
Caleb Cole
That they would sense you in a real, authentic way. And we just thank you for your presence, that you care about us and you love us. In your name, Amen.
00;41;32;04 - 00;41;49;06
Mark McGovern
Amen. I want to give an invitation real quick. Yeah. So we got coming up in the new year. This will be our fourth year called Bridge the Bay. So we do, all night prayer, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in every region across the bay. This past year, we had 4000 people turn up to pray all night long in ten different locations between Easter and Pentecost.
00;41;49;06 - 00;42;05;04
Mark McGovern
Every Friday night. And I know Solano County, I know Sonoma County. They I mean, not far from here. 30 minute drive from from where you guys are here in sac. And that'll be coming up in the new year. All the details be on the dawg. And I'm telling you, man, I would love any of these guys to get in a room all night.
00;42;05;04 - 00;42;16;08
Mark McGovern
Prayer. If you have not ever done an all night prayer gathering, it will change your life. We have had so many people are going to come for one hour. They find themselves there all night. Yeah, just encountering God and incredible ways.
00;42;16;08 - 00;42;39;21
Caleb Cole
Well, we did it here on all Night prayer. Oh come on this. Oh last year anybody. Anyway. Wow. January. And so maybe we just need to jump. Jump in and jump in or be a part of your pray the bay what Sacramento chapter. Hey dude. Because we were already planning on January doing it again. That's awesome. So, just for the guys in Sacramento, it'll be easier.
00;42;39;22 - 00;42;42;28
Caleb Cole
Okay. Yeah, great. But I'll see if we can get that.
00;42;42;28 - 00;42;52;26
Mark McGovern
Expression of all night prayer. Just stretching yourself every hour in the hour. A different worship leader. Different prayer leader keeps it fresh all night long. You literally look at your watch, you know, like, how is it 5 a.m. already?
00;42;52;29 - 00;42;56;19
Caleb Cole
Dude, it it went to four. Went by like that.
00;42;56;19 - 00;42;57;13
Mark McGovern
Yeah. And then last.
00;42;57;13 - 00;42;59;23
Caleb Cole
Hour we went 7 to 7.
00;42;59;23 - 00;43;02;00
Mark McGovern
Oh, 12 hours. Good lord.
00;43;02;02 - 00;43;04;07
Caleb Cole
And from 7 to 4 I was good.
00;43;04;07 - 00;43;05;00
Mark McGovern
It was that quick.
00;43;05;04 - 00;43;09;23
Caleb Cole
4 to 7 was rough, bro. I barely made it. That's why we not stayed all. That's why we.
00;43;09;23 - 00;43;15;27
Mark McGovern
Go. We're veterans now. We go 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. because you don't. You don't hit that wall. Yeah.
00;43;15;28 - 00;43;31;10
Caleb Cole
But anyway about that. But. Yeah, keep an eye. We'll let you know more details on all that coming up. We'll actually tag in the show notes when this comes out with, the details for your stuff. Yeah. And then, what we're doing in January as well. Yeah. But Mark love you, man. Good stuff. Oh, you're going to.
