Greetings and Welcome to The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg
New episodes tend to air over the local KMMR radio station @ 5 minutes past 4PM each M-F. And have been doing so, nearly every week since Sept 2018.
New episodes appear here usually within a few hours after that KMMR air time and been striving to post new releases here by 4:30PM.
I want to again welcome you to the 4:05 Coffee Break. Get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening. Beautiful day. Beautiful day.
OK Solberg:Spring wheat $6.02 a bushel. It's going down. 550lb steer calf $4.35 a pound, in Billings, at PAYS. $4.35 a pound, 558lb steer calf just sold. And a 100lb fat lamb in Billings, going up as of October 19, just a couple of days ago. 100lb fat lamb $3.19 a pound. But guys, there's more much more.
OK Solberg:Okay. Okay. I know you guys think I live in the past. And in fact, I told you that on more than one occasion. So I wanna prove that I don't live in the past because I was looking in the current Phillips County newspaper last week actually dated 10/14/2026, and I see the school lunch menus.
OK Solberg:Wow. How about that? I see at Saco on Wednesday they had Bagels for breakfast and Chili and Cornbread for lunch. Whitewater, on the other hand, was serving biscuits and gravy for breakfast and ham and potato soup for lunch. At Dodson Public School, we had pancake wrap for breakfast and sloppy joes and tater tots for lunch.
OK Solberg:And at the Malta School, the menu shows cinnamon rolls and yogurt for breakfast and beef stew with a dinner roll for lunch. Oh, that sounds good. It reminds me of the television show Heehaw.
OK Solberg:What's for supper grandpa? Well, tonight you're really in for a treat. I've got 3 kinds of pie and 3 kinds of meat and 4 kinds of vegetables and 5 kinds of drink. Even junior will get full for once, don't you think? Yum. Yum. We all like to eat and we all need to eat.
OK Solberg:But as I was looking at the menus in the PCN, a thought came to my mind. I was flashback to the past. Let me tell you, kiddies, they didn't list the menu in the newspaper back then. They did not. They didn't have it on the radio station either because we didn't have a radio station back then. Oh, it was a different time. That's for sure.
OK Solberg:Like they say, we used to drink from the garden hose, ride in cars without buckling up. We went to school without knowing what was for lunch. We survived a world without GPS, without cell phones.
OK Solberg:Some things are certainly better today, today and some things we probably ought to have done differently, but perhaps the greatest difference isn't what we had or didn't have, it's how much a life we learned to handle with what we had.
OK Solberg:So as I looked at the menus there in the paper, I thought back to Malta public schools in the mid 1960's and early 70's. 1st off, guys, you have to understand there was sometimes over 800 students, 800 in the Malta public schools back then. I'm not kidding you. From 750 to 840 students in grades 1 through 12.
OK Solberg:Now you also have to understand that we would have a Thanksgiving meal and a Christmas meal. You remember that. Never forget it. We had them. I was there. But here's the thing. They didn't announce what was in the lunchroom and they didn't tell you when the Thanksgiving meal would happen or they wouldn't tell you when the Christmas meal would happen.
OK Solberg:Imagine if word got out that it was the Thanksgiving meal being served today at the lunchroom. Can you imagine what would happen? If everyone knew, everyone might show up. And if everyone did show up, that food could be gone after grades 1 through 8 showed up and the high school students would have to go back to school hungry. No, sir.
OK Solberg:Do not, I repeat, do not announce what lunch menu was and never, oh, never tell when the Thanksgiving or Christmas meal will be served. Keep it on the down low, so to speak.
OK Solberg:I remember how surprised when I showed up a couple of days before Halloween and they were serving turkey dinner with stuffing and all the trimming and even a round container of ice cream with the wooden spoon for dessert. Oh, hold the phone and call the doctor. That was yum yum for sure.
OK Solberg:So just remember this, we ate well, never went hungry at least, but we certainly didn't know what we were gonna be served. It was a surprise every day and we loved it. Oh, how we loved it because that's the way it was. Just imagine if 840 students showed up for the Thanksgiving dinner. Now understand this.
OK Solberg:I'm not grumbling. I'm just remembering. It reminds me of a bible verse from Ecclesiastes 9:7. Go, eat your food with gladness and drink your wine with a joyful heart for God has already approved what you do. Ecclesiastes 9:7. Yep.
OK Solberg:So until next time. As you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
