The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we mark 25 years since INXS leading man Michael Hutchence's tragic and all too early passing, while noting Kat Bass being absent but still there in spirit for our Triggered Tuesdays indie feast!

Show Notes

As broadcast November 22, 2022 with a lot missing.  Tonight, we mark 25 years since the tragic and all-too-early suicide of Michael Hutchence.  The INXS leading man had become a superstar back in 1987 as the Aussie band's Kick broke through to the US & UK.  However, by this date in 1997 Hutchence was struggling with numerous problems, and they apparently became too much for him to bear.  Of course, with it being Tuesday night we are getting Triggered with all the new indie and underground we can cram into two hours' worth of radio with Kat Bass once again out with health concerns.  Great new music to highlight in both hours, with our Friday guest River Westin highlighted in part 1, along with new albums out from Weyes Blood, Julien Chang, and Alex Siegel.

Facts
INXS – Need You Tonight
- In a piece of tragic history that still feels like a bad dream or some kind of suppressed memory, today marks 25 years since INXS frontman Michael Hutchence passed away in a Sydney hotel room that the coroner rules a suicide. He was only 37 years of age at the time.
- The INXS frontman was struggling with depression, taking Prozac and a range of illegal drugs to help cope, made worse by constant media scrutiny over his relationship with British TV host Paula Yates and her contentious custody battle with ex-husband Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats.
- INXS was in their native Australia preparing for the last leg of a world tour in support of their 10th studio album, Elegantly Wasted. Yates was supposed to visit with her daughters, including Tiger Lily, the 16-month-old girl she had with Hutchence.
- At the last minute, Geldof put the brakes on the plan, and Hutchence, lonely for his daughter, was beside himself. Yates recalled in her police statement that the singer was "frightened and couldn't stand a minute more without his baby." Coroner Derrick Hand rules the death a suicide as a result of Hutchence's depression coupled with drug and alcohol use.
- Rest in power, Michael Hutchence, gone 25 years ago today.
MT Vice – Blue Boy
- This is a tune that just dropped yesterday as a standalone single. As to the band, they are a duo based in Nashville and have been doing their dreamy thing since formation in 2018.
- The two members mads & dee actually met in high school down in Tallahassee, FL and say that their sound looks to create an honest depiction of human behavior.
Julien Chang – Marmalade
- After a stellar debut with the self-titled Julien landing on our radar, as of Nov 5 Julien Chang is back with a sophomore LP The Sale.
- This was actually the lead single to the album that was released way back over the summer, but there’s only so much we can cover here, fair listener and definitely wanted to give this LP a shout on the show.
The After Hours – Broken Head
- This is another tune very freshly dropped just overnight. The band are a trio in the studio and the bio says they hail from Harrisburg, PA but I think they’re based in Brooklyn nowadays.
- Anyway, another good dreamer to make for the catcher, but with a little extra clang to keep you on your toes tonight.
River Westin – Daydreaming
River Westin – St. Tropez
River Westin – Pink Velvet
- So, we’re gonna get very dreamy and vintage for the finality of part 1 tonight.
- River Westin just dropped their sophomore LP The Honeymoon Suite, which is a brilliant LGBTQ take on 50s & 60s pop nostalgia.
- We’ll have the artist on the show Friday to discuss this brilliant album and play some of the dual inspirations for it. Do check in full before then! River Westin is the artist, the album is The Honeymoon Suite (recap song titles)
