Somewhere along the way we picked up a lie: that caring for your body is vanity, and that body and soul are at odds. Ryan and Annie DeNome have been rejecting that idea at their kitchen table for years — on evening walks, over coffee, in conversations with friends that ran two hours past when everyone meant to go home. This is the episode where they move those conversations to a microphone. You'll meet both hosts, hear the thirty-second version of two very different healing stories, and find out exactly what this show will and won't promise you. No prosperity gospel about your body. No supplement that cures everything. No talking down to anyone. Just where modern medicine meets the wisdom of Christianity, every Tuesday morning.

In this episode

  • Why "reject the gift, reject the giver" changes how you think about your own body
  • Annie's background: competitive swimmer turned triathlete, NET Ministries, Franciscan University, theology + psychology
  • Ryan's background: baseball, a broken back at 14, and a doctor who said "the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen"
  • The show's three promises — and the three patron saints it's recorded under
  • What's coming: doctors, priests, theologians, and friends with healings to tell about

What is Health in the Spirit?

Health in the Spirit is a Christian health and wellness podcast with Dr. Ryan and Annie DeNome, a chiropractor and a theologian raising a family in Cincinnati, Ohio. Each week they bring holistic health, the wisdom of the healing saints, and the teaching of the Church into one conversation about how to live well, body and soul. Rooted in Saints, Scripture, and the Catechism, the show explores what the ancient wisdom of the Church has to say about the modern health crisis: nutrition, movement, rest, healing, and raising a healthy family. New episodes every Tuesday, beginning July 7, 2026.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

You found us.

Annie DeNome:

Come on in. We're just getting started.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

This is Health in the Spirit.

Annie DeNome:

I'm Annie Denholm.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And I'm Doctor. Ryan. And each week, we're gonna be sitting down with you at our kitchen table to talk about where modern medicine meets the wisdom of Christianity.

Annie DeNome:

So that we can learn how to take care of our bodies like we're gonna live forever and our soul like we're gonna die tomorrow.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

Pour yourself something warm.

Annie DeNome:

And pull up a chair.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

Hey, guys. Thanks for pulling up a chair. We just wanna welcome you to this intro episode where we just set the stage for every episode going forward. And I wanna do that through telling you guys about a lie that most of us have believed at some point, myself included. Annie, you can kinda speak for yourself in a little bit here.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

But that lie is that taking care of your body is something vain. It's worldly. Your body and your soul are always at odds, and they're separate. And most of us have absorbed this idea without realizing it because it's just part of secular culture, wellness culture, gym culture, even some Christian circles that you don't need to worry about your body, just focus on your soul, vice versa. But the church has been rejecting this lie for the last two thousand years.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

We're gonna be breaking down what the church has to actually say about this lie through the saints, scripture, the catechism, guests that are gonna give us all of their insight into this conversation.

Annie DeNome:

Yeah. And I think, you know, I think we all have our own stories, we're gonna share that later, like you said. But something that I experienced growing up, I I was a really intense athlete. I was exercising six hours a day. I was in the health world.

Annie DeNome:

I was diving into all these things about my health. I was trying to figure out some health issues. I really suffered with some various different things, and I was just trying to figure it out. And then I finally had this moment where I was on ministry for a year, then I I went to Franciscan University, and it all clicked, that it all is connected, that God didn't create our bodies to be separate from our spiritual side. We're we're mind, body, and spirit.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And I think that really hits on kind of the foundational scripture we're gonna be going over through this show. It's gonna come up time and time again that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. And then the catechism also brings this in that life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God. So in just kind of foreshadowing again a little bit, if your body is a gift, I wanna talk about this because somebody at Franciscan brought this up to me, and it really changed how I viewed gift giving. It wasn't in the concept of this health space, but it was, it applies here.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And it's to reject the gift is to reject the giver. So to break that down a little bit further, if your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, it's a gift given to you by God. If you reject that, don't pay attention to it at all, you are rejecting the God that gave it to you.

Annie DeNome:

You're totally on point with that, Ryan. The gift the gift of our bodies is just like the most important gift we've ever been given in our lives. If we don't take care of the gift of our body, what do we have to give? Everything flows from our body. Our ability to give, our ability to live life literally stems from our body.

Annie DeNome:

Our, the way our marriage flows, our the way we interact with our children, the way we act in our jobs, everything flows from the the ability to use our bodies. This gift, this first gift that we've been given from God. It's the first gift, our soul and our body. And so we just need to learn how to steward that.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

Okay. Before we get way too far down, because we're gonna have plenty more podcasts out there, let's talk about why we're even doing this podcast. And I think we came together, and we were just having all of these same conversations on our evening walks, our afternoon walks, around the dinner table, conversations with friends. We're gonna be bringing tons of friends onto this podcast. But honestly, it was because of our kitchen table.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

That's why that the intro to this entire thing was the way it was. I mean

Annie DeNome:

Yeah. I mean, we've have been having these conversations for years, like you said, on walks. We just we we would be going on walks and we're like, oh, I wish we had, like, a a recorder here so that we could, you know, share this with all of our friends or or just when we would have friends over, you know, we would be sitting at our table table two hours longer than we thought or going over to other people's houses and just staying late, way later than we should've. And, you know, also just over coffee in the morning.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And we just wanna bring you guys into those conversations, because I think I think it's not just true for me and Annie. We're not just special in that. It's this thing that we all have these special conversations, and we just want this podcast to be a Rolodex of conversations you can skip to, go through whenever you need a little pick me up, whenever you've got a question, that's where our guests are gonna be coming in. Whenever you're questioning what is your health for, how does it connect to your spiritual side of things, because they're so deeply interconnected. Like I would come home with a patient in the clinic and I've had all these questions.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

Sometimes they got better because we prayed and they forgave somebody. Sometimes they weren't getting better and I thought that it was because they were holding onto something that they were just refusing to let go of. And I know Annie has a lot of those same things, just slightly different because she's not in a clinic all day.

Annie DeNome:

Yeah, I mean, through my job or through my time with Joah, our son, or just in general, I would have, or in my reading, would have a question that came up about the faith or a saint or a catechism paragraph that I read, and it intrigued me, like, how does this actually play out in our lives?

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And that's I feel like you guys can kind of get a get an idea there of our balance. Like, I have the more practical questions, and Annie's definitely kind of the more spiritual wanderer a little bit. But we're the idea is just to take those conversations from our kitchen table to keep this very chill and to just move those conversations here, welcome you guys into that. And we're gonna have a whole episode on this, but and Annie kinda gave her story a little bit from high school and things like that. But I just wanna share my story, how got here onto this podcast.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And I'm not just all practical, because going into high school, I broke my back, doctor said I was not gonna be able to play baseball anymore, and it was gonna take me a year to heal if I was quick with healing. And I ended up going and having a crazy transformation, with the Lord, an encounter with the Lord, a deep spiritual encounter. And from there I went to a healing service, was completely healed in that moment, and the doctor had no idea what was going on. And the line out of his mouth that I'll never forget, he came back after we did another MRI. He said this is the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And that has just been so transformational because once you see the body do something that shouldn't be able to happen, it really brings in this idea of stopping looking at the body like this machine that has parts that break down, and you really start seeing it as this thing that's animated by a soul. And it's this body and this soul composite. We're gonna break that down in the future. And Annie Annie gave you a little bit of her story previously, but why don't you just go ahead and tell the people why you're you're here too. Her story is a little bit better than mine, I think at least.

Annie DeNome:

I don't agree with that. Think I think we both have amazing stories, but, like Ryan said, we're both gonna have an episode probably where we dive really into the depths of how the Lord has woven his His grace throughout our lives. But just in general, I'm from Owensboro, Kentucky. I mentioned I was an athlete. I was a competitive swimmer that turned into a triathlete.

Annie DeNome:

And I was always, always, always on the move. And always working and always just grinding, I feel like. And I was just really immersed in the health world from a young age. I was really blessed with a friend whose dad was a chiropractor and kind of planted a lot of seeds. And so I wanna take time to look everything that has been planted and grown, I wanna plant seeds in your guys' lives because that's a way I can give back.

Annie DeNome:

And then I also, after high school, did a year with NET Ministries. We lived out of a van for a year and really got the foundation of how to pray and how to live life in the Spirit and what it truly means to live out the faith. Then I went to Franciscan University where that, that, you know, mind and spirit collided. I became a theology and psychology double major, and I had the best of the best professors who really guided me in really deepening my understanding of that. And today I work with Ryan in the office.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

She's very helpful.

Annie DeNome:

And I also work as a full time development officer with Cross Gothic Outreach where you know, our main focus is integral human development, and that is again, that physical and spiritual provision for the poor around the world, and we can get into that later.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

Okay. Let's let's stop talking about ourselves a little bit here and kinda just talk about what this show is gonna look like in the future. So we've got patron saints, Saint Cosmos and Damien, Saint Hildegard of Binyan, and Saint Augustine of Hippo. And we're gonna be bringing in the knowledge of the saints, of scripture, of the catechism. We're gonna be bringing in guests.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

We're gonna have other friends that are doctors, priests, theologians. We're gonna have friends who have really had miraculous healings in their lives. We're gonna

Annie DeNome:

have friends who who already are living out this integration in their own field of spiritual and physical integration. And we're gonna hear their stories and how they live this out.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And we've got three promises. We are never gonna promise you something that the church doesn't promise. There's not gonna be any prosperity gospel about your body. Do these supplements, and you're never gonna get sick. All your ailments are gonna be cured.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

That's not how this works. Are gonna be giving you guys practical advice, just not cure alls. We are not snake oil salesmen.

Annie DeNome:

We're not gonna talk down to people and act like we know more than them.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And we're not gonna separate the body from the soul, just like we talked about for the majority of this little bit here. New episodes are gonna come out every single Tuesday morning, 6AM eastern time. Today, July 7, we've got this intro episode, episode one, and episode two all at once for the people that like to binge things.

Annie DeNome:

Episode one is gonna dive deep into Ryan's miraculous healing he had. We'll give you all the deets on that.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

And sometimes, God does not like to just heal us all at once, and that's where Annie's story comes in. So that's episode two. You guys are really gonna get to know us in this. And then we'll join back together, and we're gonna talk about the fact that your body is a temple and it's not your own. We're gonna be going deep in-depth on that scripture verse.

Dr. Ryan DeNome:

One Corinthians chapter six verses 19 through 20 is gonna be the verse, if you wanna prep yourselves a little bit for episode three. And where can they listen to us, Annie?
