Audio edition of the Stewart Vickers AI YouTube video of the same name. Full transcript on this episode page.
The audio edition of the Stewart Vickers AI YouTube channel. Each episode takes one AI release - a model, a tool, a price cut - and translates it into money for business owners: what got cheaper, who got undercut, and what to do about it this week. Operator credibility over theory, specific numbers over vibes. Every episode links the original video and the free Church of SEO Jesus community where the prompts and workflows live.
Anthropic is quietly giving away Claude Free with enough capacity to run a small business. Most owners are paying $20 a month right now for capacity they will never actually use up. Look at what shipped on the free tier this year. Claude Free in September 2026 runs on web, mobile and desktop. Web search included, memory across every conversation you ever have with it, file creation, code execution, extended thinking for the hard problems. And through desktop extensions, the free account connects to Slack, to Google Workspace and to any external tool you can wire in through Remote MCP.
All of that on the free tier. Anthropic charges $0 for it and prints it in plain text on the pricing page. Which means the $20 a month pro subscription most business owners bought on Reflex when they signed up is now optional for actual daily work most operators do inside the tool. Serious shift in what a free account gets you today. Pro costs $240 a year if you pay monthly, $200 flat if you paid annual up front. Max costs from $100 a month, which is over £1,000 a year for a single seat.
Multiply those numbers across the three or four AI subscriptions most operators quietly have on their business card and you are leaking £2,000 a year on capacity nobody in the business ever actually touches. Here is the headline answer for anyone deciding this week. The free tier is enough for almost every non-technical operator running a business through Claude in 2026. If you are drafting emails, reviewing contracts, cleaning spreadsheets, summarizing meetings or generating first drafts of proposals, you can do all of it on the free tier without hitting a wall on a normal week. Pro is optional, not required. Only worth paying for once you have actually hit the ceiling twice.
My channel covers every Claude release, every pricing move, every free tier expansion the day Anthropic ships it. Subscribe and the next drop finds you instead of you finding out weeks late when you audit your card statement. The copy paste checklist for auditing your own AI subscriptions is in the pinned comment below. Here is the proof I ran before recording. com. Fetched 1,138,000 characters of the actual page.
Then I checked for every capability Anthropic claims sits on the free tier. Chat on web, found. Memory across conversations, found. Extended thinking, found. Slack and Google workspace, found. Remote MCP connectors, found.
Zero dollars, found. Free for everyone, found. Seven for seven. So what does Pro actually add for $17 a month? Four modules worth naming. Claude Code, the terminal agent developers used to write and ship software from the command line.
Claude Co-Work, the collaborative document surface for teams editing together. Claude Design, the creative work module for graphics and mockups. Claude Science, the research module for literature and data work. Plus more usage headroom, more Claude models to choose from. Microsoft 365 integration for Word and Excel and unlimited projects to organize your chats. Be honest with yourself.
Which of those verbs describes your actual working week? If none of them do, you are paying $17 a month for capacity you never touch. Here is what almost every business owner I know actually does with Claude. Drafts emails, reviews contracts, cleans up spreadsheets, summarizes meeting notes, generates first drafts of proposals, asks questions about their own documents. Every single one of those tasks runs on the free tier. Every single one.
Take contract review as the sharp example. Drop a supplier agreement into free Claude. Ask it what clauses would hurt you if the vendor missed a payment or tried to walk away. Get a full analysis in under a minute. The workflow used to cost you a lawyer's hour at 300 pounds. It now costs nothing.
Multiply that saving by every contract crossing your desk this quarter and you have your pro subscription paid back 60 times over on one use case. The trap is that Anthropic does not print a message cap on the free tier. Not on the page, not in the docs, not anywhere I have ever been able to find. Which means most owners assume the cap is low and buy pro before they hit it. And they never hit it because the cap is high enough that a normal operator week never touches it. Anthropic knows exactly what the message cap is.
They chose not to publish it because printing a number lets viewers decide from a spec sheet whether they need pro. Not printing it forces people to actually use the product first, which is the point. The honest test is simple. Run your whole week on free. Note the day you actually hit a wall. Now watch what max costs.
$100 a month minimum. 5 to 20 times the pro usage headroom, higher output limits and priority in the queue at peak times. Max is a seat for someone whose entire working day is Claude, a researcher, a prompt engineer, someone doing eight hours a day inside the interface generating and iterating on real output, not an operator running free tasks between meetings. If you are looking at max and you do not already know why you need max, you do not need max. com yourself right now. Scroll to the pricing block.
Look at free column, the middle column and the max column side by side. Every capability I just listed is printed there in plain English and every price I quoted is printed there in dollars. Anthropic said it, not me. Here is the move for anyone watching this and paying for pro. Cancel your pro subscription on the next renewal date. Give yourself two full weeks running your work on free.
Track how many times you hit a wall. Two walls on the same task in two weeks means pro is genuinely worth it, so upgrade back. Zero walls means you just saved $240 a year on capacity you were never actually using anyway. Do the same test on every AI subscription on your card and the math compounds fast. The bigger pattern is worth naming before you leave. AI subscriptions became a reflex purchase in 2024 and 2025, back when the free tiers really were demo mode.
Not the free tier anymore, not on not on chat GPG, not on Gemini. The reflex is now a leak times however many are on your card. One last thing before you go. If you want the actual workflows I run through free tier accounts, my free school community, the Church of SEO Jesus is where they live. Inside it, the audit checklist for cancelling AI subscriptions you never use, the contract review prompts I built for Claude Free, the email and spreadsheet templates and the room I actually answer in when a setup breaks. It is free.
Link is in the description. Come sit down. Next up, I ran a live head to head between what free Claude, free chat GPG and free Gemini can each do in a founder's working week. One of them genuinely surprised me. One of them is now impossible to justify at any price.
