The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A memorial of David Bowie in his very young days to start, along with something new from the dearly departed artist during part 2 as well on this 6th anniversary of his transformation. Kat Bass joins us in hour two to rock the new pop cuts as well!

Show Notes

As broadcast January 10, 2022 with plenty of extra rememberance for David Bowie.  Tonight we remember David Bowie's incredible body of work, and rather than be sad about his transformation six years to the day, we remember him in his prime to start the show.  A full program of fresh new cuts await after that, including a new mix of Bowie's "Shadow Man" which just dropped last week.  Kat Bass joins us for The Popcast after that, with plenty of big tunes to sink your teeth into and finish off the show right!

It is 20 hours past midnight and the work week hath officially commenced with all of its unpleasantness, but we got what you need to get that dirt off your shoulder tonight, with plenty of new cuts to go over for both hours. And this Monday’s back to business with the registers clacking as January 10, 2022. This is Danno ready to go from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Thank you as always for joining us in the audio funhouse this evening. So, as we do this and most any Monday ever it is our New Muses Monday first hour, and there’s a lot of great new business to check out here in hour 1, with Broken Social Scene Beirut and Waxahatchee all out with fresh cellophane smell singles, and for our 2nd hour Popcast Kat Bass is back once again this week to do our usual thing there, with big new joints out from The Weeknd, Eric Nam, and Why Don’t We amongst other luminaries of the pop game to go over before we hit 10 bells. For right now though, we mark the very solemn anniversary of David Bowie’s transformation to start the show, and there’s a bit of a new rarity in tow as well for later, this one still makes me feel somewhat slightly dazed, I’m not gonna lie. THIS is The Drop.
David Bowie – Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed
The Drop has once again fired up the mic and the red light is aglow for our new muses Monday maiden voyage to begin the work week properly. How’s it going Drop Gangsters? (KOR) Danno here, hoping you had a good weekend, and ready to get to all the new cuts just out fresh over the weekend, with Kat Bass joining us in hour 2 this evening.
To start things though, it is the sixth anniversary of David Bowie’s passing on this date in 2016, which he had foreshadowed in his Black Star LP, released just days earlier. One of the most engaged and brilliant musicians of the 20th century, we wanted to remember Bowie on this date as the young, brilliant, vibrant scamp that he was just starting out, so that was Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed from the Space Oddity LP.
Honestly, too much to be said here, a man that influenced thousands upon thousands of musicians with his works and millions more in the crowd beyond that, Bowie was a shapeshifter on every single album, not afraid to take risks or maybe drum up some controversy. His decades & decades of success puts him up there with the all-time legends of modern music, but it was his time to exit the stage, even though he is missed dearly by his family & loved ones along with millions and millions beyond.
David Bowie, rest in power supreme.
So, we’ll start the churn for the new tunes tonight and up next we have fresh cuts from The Smile, Broken Social Scene and Sports, all of which we’ll discuss further after they’ve done their thing. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for part 1 this evening. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, thanks as always go out to you for the love & support this and any evening you tune in. We just got in our first triad of tunes for tonight, so let’s run it down but not outta town…
The Smile – You Will Never Work In Television Again* (…this is the latest side project of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood along with Sons of Kmet drummer Tom Skinner, with this tune being their debut single. The trio is planning three livestream events later this month, all within 24 hours, and I’d be almost certain that there’s more beyond that.)
Broken Social Scene feat Sebastian Grainger – Curse Your Fail (…this is the first release from an upcoming compilation of b-sides & rarities from the band called Old Dead Young which is due out February 14 via Arts & Crafts. The song features DFA1979 artist Sebastian Grainger as well, and I’m sure we’ll get one or two more prior to the full compilation dropping, with this one being from 2010.)
Sports – Damn I’m Tired (…one of our favorite bands out of a very strong indie scene in Oklahoma is out with their latest single. The duo is planning a rather massive tour starting next month, with dates in North America and further afield planned through the summer, so check local listings if you’re over there and wanna check. Very fun band.)
So we still have a couple of nibbles left in order to finish the first course this evening, and up first is the latest from Beirut called Fyodor Doormant, another joint off Zach Condon & company’s latest rarities compilation called Artifacts, and that drops in full on January 28. Following that we have a new joint out from DOPE LEMON called Howl With Me, which is a heavy sample or cover of Jungle Fever by The Chakachas, released in 1972. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Beirut – Fyodor Doormant
DOPE LEMON – Howl With Me

II__
The Drop returns as we have clocked for the 2nd shift here at the radio factory to kick off the work week. Danno here, keeping the trains running on time from studio 2, GFN HQ, and of course Katherin Bass will be in the house for hour 2 on our Popcast Monday weekly as well, so keep it locked for that. As to what just happened, let’s have you know about it…
Kendra Morris – Penny Pincher (…the NYC-based singer-songwriter is out with this debut single to her upcoming album due out in February via Colemine Karma Chief Records. The album is called Nine Lives, which is her career fourth, but her debut on the label, and we cannot wait for her to come rock some joints with us in February as our guest artist selector, her 2nd appearance on the show.)
David Byrne feat Yo La Tengo – Who Has Seen The Wind? (…this is the first single to drop from a very interesting upcoming compilation of Yoko Ono tunes called Ocean Child. Curated by Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard, the compilation features a slew of great artists like Japanese Breakfast and Sharon Van Ettten, amongst others, and is due out on Feb 18th, which is also Yoko Ono’s 89th birthday.)
So moving forward with our trademark slomo speed here in part 2, we have another trio of freshies to check out, the first being an Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric mix of David Bowie’s Shadow Man, then we have Waxahatchee and Beau to also float into the galactic realms as well, all three of which we’ll discuss further after they return to terra. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

The Drop returns for the final blah blah blahs of the first half this evening. Danno here, making sure the sounds are juuuuust so, coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. Kat Bass drops into studio 2 momentarily to run down this week’s new pop sounds, but before that, we gotta let you know a little something about what just went into the air. That was…
David Bowie – Shadow Man (Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric mix) (…the late icon examined some rarities from the mid 60’s to mid-70’s on his 2001 album Toy, and last week released a new box set of Toy was finally released. Bowie heard stripped-down versions of the lyrics on this tune in particular and wanted it redone with a more subdued approach, so here it is, six years on from his passing, and that box set is available everywhere now.)
Waxahatchee – Up in the Sky (…the full soundtrack is out as of last Friday for the release of Apple+’s El Deafo animated series. For those that missed last Monday, this is the animated series based on Cece Bell’s graphic novel of the same name, a NYT bestseller.)
Beau – San Francisco (…this is the third single to be released by the all-female alt-pop duo from their upcoming EP called Forever, which is due out Feb 11. The band also announced a show at the Knitting Factory in NYC following the tune’s release, so get tickets if you wanna see them live. There’s also a great live element on that tune in the guitar. Very nice tune, once again that’s Beau San Francisco and Forever is due out Feb 11 in full.)
Okay, so we are approaching halftime at rapid speed, but we still got a couple more tunes to get in while the air’s still here. The Cactus Blossoms are up next with a new collab featuring Jenny Lewis called Everybody, which is off their One Day LP that is also out Feb 11, and then we have a band called Okey Dokey with their latest cut, and our final tune for the first half is called Empire Ants. This is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and we are at halftime.
The Cactus Blossoms feat Jenny Lewis – Everybody
Okey Dokey – Empire Ants
