Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Today on the show: Jordyn Brooks getting paid in Miami, Carolina’s scary Taylor Moton injury, training camp opening, and a Cardinals draft scandal that smells terrible. Let’s get into it.

The Dolphins just told us who they think they are.
Miami gave linebacker Jordyn Brooks a three year, fifty-one point three million dollar extension, with thirty-five million guaranteed. And honestly? Good. That’s not a luxury spend. That’s a grown-up football team move.
Brooks has been a machine since getting to Miami. Three hundred twenty-six tackles, twenty-four tackles for loss, six and a half sacks over thirty-four games. First-team All-Pro in twenty twenty-five. That’s not “solid starter” production. That’s the guy cleaning up everybody else’s mess.
And for Miami, this matters because the Dolphins have spent years being the fun team. Fast receivers. Big plays. Track meet offense. Cool uniforms. Everyone loves the Dolphins in September. Then January shows up and the whole thing starts feeling like a rented convertible with the check engine light on.
Paying Brooks is Miami saying, “No, we need adults in the middle of the field.”
This is the part of team building people underrate. Everybody wants the quarterback, the receiver, the corner, the edge rusher. Fine. You need those. But if your linebacker room is soft, your defense is fake tough. Brooks gives Miami a real spine.
And yeah, fifty-one point three million is a lot for an off-ball linebacker. But if he’s your defensive identity, pay him. The Dolphins didn’t overthink it. For once, Miami didn’t chase shiny. They paid the guy who makes the defense function.

Around the league, the Panthers got hit with training camp news that makes everybody stop joking for a second.
Right tackle Taylor Moton is starting camp on the reserve non-football injury list after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung. He’s on blood thinners. Carolina expects him to miss regular-season time, though they do expect him back during the year.
That’s scary before it’s football. Blood clot in the lung is not a hamstring tweak. It’s real life stuff. Football-wise, it’s brutal too. Moton is one of the few steady pieces on that Panthers offense. Bryce Young needs clean pockets, not another year of running for his life like he’s avoiding a group project.
Jaycee Horn is also starting on the non-football injury list after a cut on his foot required stitches. The team expects him back early in camp, so that one sounds less dramatic. Still, Carolina opening camp with two starters unavailable is not ideal. That roster already needed a clean summer.
And camp is here. Cardinals and Panthers veterans report today because they’re playing in the Hall of Fame Game on August sixth. Everybody else is due in by July twenty-eighth. That means the fake offseason is over. No more “best shape of his life” quotes without consequences. Pads are coming. Depth charts are real. Somebody’s third-round pick is about to get cooked by a veteran in one-on-ones and ruin a fan base’s entire afternoon.
The Seahawks also made a small roster shuffle, signing corner Brandon Johnson and waiving tight end Harrison Bryant. Not the kind of move that gets the group chat buzzing. But Seattle keeps adding bodies in the secondary while Devon Witherspoon’s contract buzz sits there in the background. Ian Rapoport says Witherspoon is further along in extension talks than Christian Gonzalez in New England. Seattle is reportedly offering north of thirty million per year. Corner money is getting spicy.
The Patriots had their own medical list: running back Terrell Jennings on active NFI, tight end C J Dippre on active PUP, and linebacker Harold Landry the third on active PUP. Landry is the name that matters. New England needs pass rush juice badly. If he’s limited for long, that defense gets a lot less annoying.
On the media side, ESPN and NFL Network cuts are still getting roasted online. Tom Pelissero was reportedly part of the layoffs, while Pat McAfee addressed criticism tied to his massive reported ESPN number. Fans are mad because it looks ridiculous from the outside. Insiders lose jobs, and the loudest people on TV keep getting giant bags. Corporate budgeting may be complicated. Optics are not.
And in baseball, Nolan Arenado picked up his two thousandth career hit. Sixth active player to get there. Say what you want about where he is now, but that’s a ridiculous career marker. Two thousand hits with his defense at third base? That’s a hell of a résumé.

The Hangover Take: the Cardinals’ alleged draft gambling mess is worse than a normal front-office scandal because it hits the one thing every fan has to believe on draft night.
Cardinals director of college scouting Ryan Gold is accused of sharing inside information about Arizona’s intended first-round pick, running back Jeremiyah Love. There are also gambling-policy allegations involving parlays. The Arizona Department of Gaming is investigating, Gold is suspended indefinitely, and he plans to appeal.
The legal process can sort out the details. The football damage is already obvious.
The draft only works if teams can trust the room. That’s the whole deal. You spend months lying to everybody outside the building. But inside the building, the board has to be sacred. If someone leaks the pick for gambling reasons, that’s not just dumb. That’s radioactive.
Arizona should treat this like a five-alarm fire. Not because one scouting director decides the season. Because every agent, every rival team, and every sportsbook is now looking at the Cardinals like, “What else gets out of that building?”
That’s the nightmare. Not the suspension. The reputation.

That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
