The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A trip to Switzerland awaits tonight as Lizz Kalo joins us for her 2nd season, and this show musically is a real trip, with a particular focus on more recent groups while eschewing the expected.

Show Notes

As broadcast September 29, 2021 with plenty of extra non-neutral colors for your podcast experience.  We remember Miles Davis to start the show, highlighting the late-for-release "Rubberband" LP, which only dropped two years ago after recording in 1985.  The Man with The Horn passed away on this date 30 years ago, considered by many to still be the absolute king of jazz.  After that it's a trip to Bern & the Swiss surrounds for our season debut Round Trip with Lizz Kalo.  Lots of good new groups & some already disbanded in the mix, with highlights from Sirens of Lesbos, Panda Lux, Al Pride and many other very worthy artist from high up in the Alps.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on a very wet final Wednesday of September here in Gwangju, and it our Round Trip Wednesday season opener so no matter the weather here on the ground, we are about to take to the skies and head to the Swiss Alps this evening. And it must be noted in a strictly neutral way that history marks tonight as September 29, 2021. This is Danno of course roll don’t fold as I pack for Incheon International Airport, no passport needed from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Lizz Kalo is back for another fantastic season here on the air, and flight TD045 takes off for a the country high up in the Alps of Central Europe in Switzerland. Many would call it a small country, but obviously the influence of its finances, neutrality, and centrality in Europe make it a hotbed of music and other forms of expression, which we will do our utmost with the time alotted to explore this evening. However, before we even get on the bus for the airport it is time to make sure the reading glasses are fit snugly for our TIGHT (or) feature, as we remember Miles Davis on this, the 30th anniversary of his transformation into the truly cosmic realms. This is The Drop.

Miles Davis – Rubberband of Life (Amerigo Gazaway remix)

The Drop has embarked and we are on the way for our our Round Trip Wednesday night, the season premiere for here in season 6. Flight TD045 takes off for Bern Switzerland this evening at 9pm sharp with Lizz Kalo in tow, and we must note that Switzerland’s amazing meld of Italian, German, French, and native Swiss influences along with its acceptance of refugees has made it an amazing country in the music realm, although admittedly kind of slept on, but either way we’re going to explore as much as we can for most of the two hours of programming tonight. What’s snapping and/or tapping tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno here on the mic, ready to take you on a trip, especially with this hard to get outta bed kinda rainy day we’re having today locally.
However, before we get started with the Swiss layer of the sammich tonight, we just started things with our TIGHT (or) feature for part 1 tonight to pay tribute to the one & only Miles Davis, who passed away on this date in 1991.
Unquestionably to my mind & those of countless others, the man with the horn was the greatest jazz musician of all time with a resume of diversity that would give any musician pause. We opened there with the Amerigo Gazaway remix of Rubberband of Life, which was part of a “lost album” called Rubberband which was slated for release in the early 1980’s but was shelved as Miles left his long-time label Columbia Records.
However, in late 2019 just over 2 years to the day, this record finally saw the light of day & given proper release with a few new features and extra remastery, with that Amerigo Gazaway remix being a special bonus feature.
There’s no way to go over the absolute majesty of the discography & Miles Davis’s influence on all forms of music, so we’ll just leave it there.
Miles Davis, rest in power supreme.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Now that the shameless self-promo is out of the way, as always with our Wednesday trips let’s get the Swiss thing rolling, and we’ll start with Dieter Meier to be followed by the Sirens of Lesbos & Alois we drift away on the bus to ICN with the headphones on. We’ll talk more about all three of these dance gems on the other side right as we’re pulling up to Terminal 1. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to the Swiss Alps.

Back on The Drop tonight as we head down the home stretch to the main terminal at Incheon International Airport. Danno here, making sure the bag & everything’s in order before disembarking, and we take off with Lizz Kalo on flight TD045 this evening on our season opener Round Trip to Switzerland, so we just got a taste of that country’s older & more modern crews with that trio of tunes, so let’s do the rundown...
Dieter Meier – Bonjour Cherie (…interesting album from 2017 right here called Nacht und Tag or Night & Day. Mr Meier is a well-known businessman & artist in Switzerland, being the front man for the famed band Yello, and having a variety of industrial interests in the country while also being a noted conceptual artist as well.)
Sirens of Lesbos – Pala (…we’ll highlight the Serag Sisters & their Sirens cohorts in hour 2 tonight, but we must note that the band based in the capital has really grown into something since featuring on BBC6 with Gilles Peterson along with this show early in 2020, but I’d estimate the former is far greater than the latter. Great to see this band having success though, they have a magic sound.)
Alois – Light the Fire (…this Swiss quintet has an interesting sound melding modern synth-driven techniques with Spanish & balearic influences. Light the Fire appeared on the band’s album from last year which given what’s driving the music is named, appropriately enough, Azul, or Blue en espanol.)
Now moving to close the opening quarter of our game of travelling without moving this evening, we have two more modern cuts to showcase with Naomi Lareine up first with a joint called Limitless, and then we have Sri Lankan born Swiss-based singer Priya Ragu with FIFA rager of Good Love 2.0 for that smooth afterglow as we head into the PSAs. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night in Guyana.
Naomi Lareine – Limitless
Priya Ragu – Good Love 2.0

II.
The Drop has arrived for check-in at the front desk in the usual hurry up & wait kind of fashion when one travels abroad. What’s up, Drop Gangsters? (KOR) Danno here ready for our flight to Georgetown in Guyana tonight on flight TD045, and Lizz Kalo will be on the flight which takes off at 9pm sharp, or at whatever time it starts if you’re listening to us in podcastland. We just rocked a couple of joints right there from a very smooth collab album to start stanza 2, so let’s go to the infomatics...
Maston & L’éclair – L’eau Bleue (….)
Maston & L’éclair – Ghost (…this LP just dropped a couple of weeks ago and as you could hear right there with both, it is a super smooth concoction of jazzy grooves with lots of headspace reminiscent of groups like AIR. Maston is a producer based in LA & L’éclair is the Swiss contingent here, which is a groove sextet out of Geneva which we’ll discuss further in hour 2.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So we’ll continue to keep the flame slow & low in the next block, as we do as per yoozjsh in part 2. Up next we’ll feature Benjamin Amaru, Black Sea Dahu along with Lo & Ledue. And naturally we shall discuss each in their respective order after they are done with their cosmic vibery. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Swiss-uh.
_________
The Drop continues and we have reached the departure gate this evening with a good bit of time to spare although the lemmings are as usual already lined up in turgid, bored fashion. Danno here, ready set and going to Switzerland shortly with Lizz Kalo for our season premiere Round Trip feature, so let’s get with the liner notes on those last three joints...
Benjamin Amaru – September Skies (…a bit of a new indie artist based in Switzerland with not a lot of data out there on him. He’s done a couple of Color Shows which definitely got him some shine & greater popularity, but the bios are scant. This tune dropped last year.)
Black Sea Dahu – Take Stock of What I Have (…we’ll talk more about this fantastic band of misfits in hour 2, which is the project of Jeanine Catharin. This tune appeared on 2018’s White Creatures LP.)
Lo & Leduc – Agrumant (Hommage an Kurt Marti) (…this is a rap group from the capital of Bern, and this single dropped earlier this year. They broke through with a 2014 album called Zucker fürs Volk, or "Sugar for the People", and for those wondering Kurt Marti was, he is a poet from Bern who unfortunately passed away in 2017, and this is his poem set to the group’s music.)
Okay, so final call to board just blurted out in like 7 languages, so we gotta boogie to the door but not before we get in two more. Next we got Silver Furs with a tune called Now We Start to See The Beauty and we’ll finish with a lil bumper by Cella called When You Talk, and that’s gonna be the game for here in the first half. THIS is The Drop now boarding on your Round Trip to Bern and it is indeed halftime.
Silver Furs – Now We Start To See The Beauty
Cella – When You Talk
