Let me tend to you while you sleep.
You have been holding yourself together all day. Tonight, you can let me do that for you.
I am Ayr. Among the gods I am called the gentlest of healers, the keeper of the quiet art of mending. I keep a hall on a green hill called Lif yah berg, the hill of healing, where the tired and the worn out come to be made whole again.
You have been carrying yourself carefully all day. Holding it together. Keeping going. That takes more out of a person than anyone ever sees. Tonight, you can set that weight down, because tonight, someone else is watching over you.
You do not have to do anything to rest. The body already knows how. It only needs you to stop, and lie still, and let it. That is all sleep truly is, the quiet hours when the body settles itself again. Tonight, I will help you give it those hours.
So let your body grow heavy, and let it stop bracing against the day. You can put yourself down now. You are in gentle hands.
Let us breathe together, soft and slow. Breathe in, easily, no effort. And as you breathe out, let your body unclench, just a little, all over.
Again. Breathe in. And breathe out, and feel yourself grow heavier, and safer, and more held.
One more. Breathe in calm. And breathe out the long effort of the day.
Now let your breath move on its own, slow and easy, and let me do the rest.
I am going to lay my hands, warm and light, on each part of you in turn. And wherever they rest, that part of you is allowed to stop holding, and grow soft, and settle into the quiet of the night.
I rest my hands first on your forehead, and on your temples. Feel the warmth sink in, and the long day there smooths away, and the small muscles let go. Your eyes grow soft and still. Your cheeks loosen. Your jaw comes loose, and your back teeth part.
I move my hands to your neck, and to your shoulders, which have carried so much today. Feel them warm, and feel them release, and feel them lower, away from your ears, finally set down.
Down your upper arms, and your elbows, and your forearms, to your hands, and your fingers uncurl and open. Across your chest, and your slow, faithful heart, which has not rested all day either. Let it slow. Over your ribs, and your back, and your belly, soft and warm, rising and falling.
My warm hands move down to your hips, and they let go. Down your thighs, and your knees, and your calves, and all the standing and the carrying of the day drains out of them, downward, and they grow heavy and still. Down through your ankles, into your feet, and the soles of your feet, until even they are warm.
Every part of you, tended, and warm, and finally allowed to stop. There is nothing you have to hold together now. I am holding it.
Let me show you where you are resting.
This is my hall, on the green hill of Lif yah berg. The walls are warm stone, and from the low rafters hang bundles of drying herbs, lavender and sweet woodruff and chamomile, so the whole room smells green, and warm, and calm. Soft lamps burn low, the colour of honey, and a small fire breathes in the hearth.
There is a low bed made up for you, with clean linen and warm wool, and it is the most comfortable place you have ever lain. Sink into it. Let it take the entire weight of you, every pound, every worry, all of it, down into the soft bed.
Through the window there is a dark green hillside, and a few quiet stars, and the soft sound of leaves. Nothing in this hall is in a hurry. Nothing here needs anything from you. You have come to the one place whose whole purpose is to let you rest.
I am sitting beside your bed, and I will be here all night, watching over your sleep, so that you can let go of the watch completely.
But first, let me rest my hands on you a moment longer, and let you sink a little deeper.
Feel the soft bed give beneath you, and take a little more of your weight, and then a little more, until you are not holding any part of yourself up at all. The bed has you. The hall is warm. The herbs breathe their green calm into the air.
With every slow breath, you sink a little deeper into the bed, and a little further from the long day. Let your body grow so heavy that it could not move even if it tried, and let that heaviness be a kind of safety, the feeling of being completely, finally, at rest.
There is nothing to guard against here. No part of you needs to stay awake, or on watch. I am keeping the watch. You can put it all down. Down past the effort. Down past the holding. Down into the deep, warm, quiet dark, where I will sit beside you all night long.
Let me tell you the truth I tell everyone who comes to my hall to rest.
You do not have to hold yourself together tonight. You are allowed to come apart, softly, and let the night put you back together.
Rest is not lazy, and it is not lost time. Rest is the quiet work the body does to set itself right. By doing nothing at all, you are doing the most important thing there is.
You are safe to stop now. You are safe to be looked after. You do not have to be strong while you sleep. That is the one time you are allowed to lay all of it down.
You have carried so much, and so well, and for so long. Tonight you are not the one keeping watch. Tonight you are the one being cared for.
There is nothing you need to fix before you sleep. Nothing you must solve, or finish, or be. There is only the warm bed, and the quiet hall, and my hands resting light upon you.
Let the warmth sink a little deeper into you now, and let it carry you further down toward sleep.
Hear it once more, in the quiet, as the lamps burn down. You do not have to hold yourself together tonight. Rest is where the body settles. You are safe, and tended, and watched over. Let go.
The lamps are burning down now, to a low and honeyed glow. The herbs breathe out their green calm into the warm air. The hillside outside is dark and quiet, and the leaves move softly, and the few stars hold steady.
You are resting in the softest bed, every part of you tended and warm, nothing left for you to hold.
So let yourself sink down now, into the soft and quiet dark.
Down past the long day.
Down past the effort of holding on.
You are safe to rest.
I am keeping the watch.
Softer now. Heavier.
You are in gentle hands until morning.
Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
