โPlant lovers.
Hello and welcome, home decor lovers. I'm Sue. And I'm Val. And this is Design Meets Decor, brought to you by Naomi Home. In this podcast, we will analyze how home decor styles act as a mirror that showcases who we are as a person, and provide inspiration for styling and upscaling your spaces.
We do all of this while living, laughing, and low-key losing it. In this episode, we will continue in our journey where we will go over our 56 home decor styles that we have in our quiz. Today, we're going to talk about biophilic and organic modern. If you're interested in finding out which home decor styles you match with, you can check out the link in our bio, take the quiz, and then join us back here at Design Meets Decor where you will learn more about your style and what it says about you.
Now with all the introductions out of the way, we will get started with biophilic home decor style This style kinda reminds me of the plant section in a grocery store. I agree. For me, in general, this style reminds me of nature overall, and I think the color palette really showcases that. I agree. It has a lot of greens- Mm-hmm
a lot of oranges. Yes. Well, not oranges, but an orangey color. Yeah. I would say, like, orangey yellow- Yeah ... kinda imitating the sunset, and then some, like, different shades of brown and greens to imitate, like, nature, and a little bit of some muted blues there- Mm-hmm ... for, like, the sky and all that. Just as a note too, you will rarely see green furniture.
Mm-hmm. It'll be, like, maybe a pillow, stuff like that. It's mostly in the plants. That is true. You do feel like you're in a little jungle. Yes. They like walls full of plants and just having plants all around. I guess you can guess by the name biophilic. Mm-hmm. So I do see that connection. Biophilic, in general, like not just home decor style, biophilic refers to the innate human tendency to seek connections with nature and other living forms.
So it's not just a home decor style. It's its own meaning. You can see a lot of that in the color palette. We talked a little about it earlier, but just to go a little more into it, you'll see a lot of greens, of course, in the plants. You see some accents of blue, like grayish blues, maybe some gray even.
And then the main color apart from the greens from the plants would be the oranges and the yellows, kinda to imitate the sunset. So it's very natural, very biophilic. Yes, very outdoorsy- Very outdoorsy, yeah ... I would say also, yes. There's also a lot of, like, shades of browns, and those browns you'll see a lot in, like, the wood and furniture selection that they used, kinda imitating the outdoors to bring it in.
Mm-hmm. You can see how people who, who fit into this style- Mm-hmm ... have a lot of personality traits relating to nature and being eco-conscious. They're very nurturing. They're wellness, um, oriented. Mm. I guess you can kinda guess by the use of a lot of plants. Also, biophilic literally means lover of life. Yes.
They're also the type of people who like a home that feels like a greenhouse or a plain forest field. They're also considered plant parents since they like taking care of plants. You know, they, they're the type of people who would not buy a plastic plant or fake plant for their home. They will have the real thing there.
Yeah. Which makes it so not me. I wish I could take care of a plant, but nah, I can't keep them alive for, for that long. So I stick to plastic plants. I do like wellness and nature as a whole, like the idea of nature, but it'll have to be, like, through a glass window. Like, nature's over there, I'm over here contemplating it type of thing.
So because of that, I don't think I fit the description of the people who embody this style. In a way, I'm the same. Mm-hmm. I get lucky with the plants I get. Kind of barely take care of them, but somehow they're still alive, thankfully. But yeah, I would say I'm nurturing. Mm-hmm. I would like to be wellness-oriented.
I don't think I'm there yet. I see. I see what you mean. It's also the type of thing that even if you like plants or are able to take care of one or two, the people who embody the style do like it to an extreme. Yeah. Talking about how eco-conscious people who embody this style- Mm-hmm ... are, you see a lot of natural materials.
I think it's mainly, if not all, they use since they're very, again, eco-conscious. Um, you see a lot of cork, rattan, um, light-toned woods. If you do see some manmade materials, it would probably be more like raw metals, like copper or raw iron. True, true. The portion of manmade materials that it uses, small amount of copper and wrought iron, and it's to create a contrast.
That the course described to be, quote-unquote, "literally alive"- Mm. Yes ... 'cause it has a lot of variety of house plants. It has a lot of water features. I imagine the house like this having, like, indoor water fountains. It has a lot of tactile textures, so, like, river stone flooring, or if you wanna put an art piece, it would be, like, a preserved moss art piece.
Mm. Yes. So it feels very oxygen-rich. Within those natural materials and the furniture, they do like those organic shapes and soft curves just to not have that type of modern, linear design to make it look more natural. Which is why I think that our Naomi Home Darcy Rattan Sideboard Table would be perfect for a biophilic home.
Mm. Yes. It has that natural color. It has the rattan panels that biophilic people really like. It also has that modern look, but also fitting into the biophilic look and decor. Yes, I agree. I personally think our Naomi Home Ariana Accent Chair in Stone Gray will look very nice in this style. This accent chair has a curved back, which makes it a great addition for any style that likes to implement organic shapes in their decor.
This is also a swivel chair that rotates up to 360 degrees, allowing you to engage in any conversation without having to stand up. Yeah, I see that. Now, I wouldn't say that this style is minimalist nor maximalist, even though it follows the idea that there's a lot of plants everywhere, and these are plant parents.
This style is actually up to preference, so it's neither minimalist nor maximalist. I think decor-wise- Yeah ... it kinda leans more on minimalist, but since it has a lot of flowers and those- Mm-hmm ... like, decorations, it makes a good balance of both. Yes. I personally thought this was a maximalist home decor style, since you have- Yeah
plants everywhere. However, it does trend being a minimalist style, which I guess I can see that, 'cause maybe if you have a backyard and you have all your plants outside in the natural sun, and you're taking care of them there, and you only have a few houseplants inside. Which is something I actually like about this style.
Mm-hmm. As I said before, I'm not a big fan of minimalism, but since this is a good balance of both, and especially since it has plants, I do like that balance in this style. Something that I do like about this home decor style is the integration of nature, the different shades of green having to be with plants.
I do like having plant decor around my own space, just a few here and there, but I am the type of person who considers that plants are a must-have. However, I'm not a big fan of the amount of natural materials used, like rattan and the woods. Light-color wood is my least favorite. I can deal with dark wood.
So it doesn't match what I like in a home decor style. I do see why you wouldn't like it. As for me- Mm-hmm ... I like everything decor-wise, I just think that since it has a lot of plants, and maybe it's me talking from a place of not having a lot of plants at my house, but I just feel like there would be a lot of insects around.
True. So I'm not a big fan of that. But other than that, I really, really like this style. As for where I would put it in a room, since I would think that it can bring a lot of insects inside, I probably wouldn't put it inside. But if I had, like, a patio place- Mm-hmm ... in the backyard- I think it would look really nice if you put up a plant wall on it, and then you put a nice tan sofa on it.
I think a lot of biophilic accents will look really nice in a outdoorsy space. I agree. I think for me, I will have it more outside as a greenhouse, having all your plants there where they can thrive more, rather than being houseplants on the inside. However, if you're a pro and you think you can keep your plants alive indoors, uh, you can start by bringing in different types of houseplants.
They don't all have to be greens. They could also be flowers. It can be big, small. That could be a great way to bringing this style into your home, starting off with your very own plant selection. Yeah, and if you wanna keep- Mm-hmm ... on bringing things that fit this style into your home, I would also say something very important.
It's probably natural materials, since they do follow this nature-first philosophy. So bring in the cork, the rattan, light-toned woods. I would also say that they can try to rely more on natural lighting, so if in case you don't have floor-to-ceiling windows, uh, try to just have them open, not cover up by a curtain.
Have sunlight come in, especially if you're taking care of houseplants. So try to have your windows accessible for your plants, and welcome the sun as most as possible. Yeah, I think you wanna go for the rewilding approach. Yes. You want it to feel that you're one with nature. So yeah, by bringing in these aspects, a lot of people who have this style say that it could improve your cognitive function, reduce stress, boost physical wellbeing.
So it's more about being one with nature and bringing those aspects into your house. Speaking of being one with nature, this home decor style does prefer wooden flooring, which is very common here. But another type of floor style that they like is cork flooring. Cork itself is a natural material that comes from the cork oak tree.
When I found out that the cork oak tree is just gently peeled by hand, allowing the tree to live and for it to regenerate with time, meaning that they don't cut down the tree, that made me really appreciate cork more. Yeah, I also didn't know that before we did some research for this episode. But just as a side note, this floor is sealed, so it's not a squishy floor.
Yes. It is mixed with other natural materials and composed. It's not like having a corkboard on your floor. It is made with other materials to make it more solid. Overall, I really like this style, though. I wouldn't even mind it if I had to live with a roommate or something like that. I think it looks really nice.
Again, I think with the whole improve your cognitive function and reduce stress, I really like that part of it, too. So I would really like living in a biophilic home. I would like living in one too, especially if I have a roommate or a significant other that knows how to take care of plants. I think that would help.
I would use them as, like, a guide of how to actually maintain them and helping them out. I, myself, living with that many plants, I don't see it. I do tend to go for plastic plants. But yeah, overall, it's a very nice style, very nice look. I do see myself living in a style there Taking a look here, it seems that we went over everything we wanted to say about biophilic home decor style.
We talk about the personality, how the people are nurturing, wellness-oriented, and eco-conscious individuals. We went over the color palette, how it imitates nature, having different shades of greens, browns, some blues, and yellowy orange here and there. How it uses primarily natural materials, and sometimes manmade materials like copper and, and wrought iron to create that contrast.
How they like furniture made with wood, rattan, and those curvy and organic shaped furniture to make it look more natural. So we're good to move on to our next home decor style, organic modern. Honestly, this style reminds me of literally the style that we just talked about, biophilic, just more minimalistic, but also much less flowers.
I would say, though, it does have more traits from Bauhaus and mid-century modern. Mm-hmm. Because this home decor style originated in the 20th century, like four or three years before mid-century modern. However, unlike mid-century modern, organic modern wasn't as popular until now because people seek warmth and personality in their spaces, in contrast to the once popular millennial gray trend Yeah, I was just thinking that.
I feel like that trend is totally dying. I don't know about you, but oftentimes when I'm scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, I see a video of somebody buying a traditional-looking house- Mm-hmm ... and changing it to a more, a more modern millennial look. Oh, yes. And they get so much hate for it. The modern look overall- Yeah
a lot of people are indeed seeking that personality in their homes. And I've seen those videos where all the comments are saying, like, "If you want a modern home, just buy a modern home." Right. "Don't change the charm that these older homes have." Which reflects within the people who embody this style. They tend to be calm, approachable, and creative, and they enjoy spaces that feel both high-end and comfortably lived in.
Yeah, these people are also described as very serene and authentic. Mm-hmm. The personality traits overlap a lot with biophilic, too. They also tend to be environmentally conscious. True, yeah. And they seek that balance of having a sanctuary. So even though there is not as many plants, they will have some here and there.
They have what people describe to be a balanced soul, and they like to feel grounded. Yes. I would say that one thing they prioritize is their own wellbeing, which is why this is a very minimalist home decor style. They do try to avoid the clutterness that a maximalist home would bring. Yeah, they follow the less is more philosophy.
True, yes. Which is why I don't think I follow the personality traits of people who embody this style. I wouldn't say I'm a balanced soul. I would like to be. Not there yet. And again, with the whole value wellness, I would love to value wellness, but I'm not there yet. But I think I can be creative, and I do like spaces that feel high-end and comfortably lived in at the same time.
True. I, I can see that. I personally feel that I do match the personality of the people who embody this style. I don't know about balanced soul, but I do prioritize feeling grounded, and I do value my wellness overall, which is why I do like this style a lot. Mm-hmm The color palette for this home decor style is both neutral and earthy because the base colors are like cream, beige, soft taupes, and then it has these earthy mid-tones that are like muted greens and browns.
The color palette's kinda similar to the biophilic- Yeah ... but just mute the orangey yellows and take out the greens since this uses a lot less plants. Yeah, I agree. Biophilic is more bright. Mm-hmm. And the organic modern home decor style is more muted. It's more monochromatic. Ah, true. Yes. You also see a lot of these colors in the materials since, again- Mm
this style uses almost exclusively natural materials. You see it in the woods. You see a lot of the muted natural colors. You see a lot of travertine stone, rattan, and terracotta Organic modern does like stone walls, stone flooring. Not all together, just maybe one or the other, but this style does favor stone more than the woods and other natural materials.
It- It even favors rocks and minerals as decor. Yes, it does. Unlike biophilic home decor style that did like adding all these organic shapes and kinda stringing away from modern home decor, this is the one aspect of modern design that organic modern uses. It does like modern silhouettes for their furniture with round edges, and they like the chunkier furniture bases.
Yeah, you'll see that a lot of this furniture also uses a lot of natural fabrics. Mm. You see cotton, jute, bouclรฉ- Yes ... linen. Yes. However, the biophilic does also uses the linen and cotton, but it also likes wool, which I found interesting that organic modern doesn't really incorporate that fabric selection.
Yeah, I think it's because organic modern's much more of a cleaner look. Wool has a lot of- Mm ... texture to it. And while organic modern does like texture, I wouldn't say they necessarily put it in their furniture. That's true. However, going back to, like, those modern silhouettes that they like to add, one of the Naomi Home products that would fit very well in this home style is the Landon recliner.
My favorite color selection for this specific style would be the mocha finish. This is a pushback recliner, so there is no exposed lever to obstruct the simplicity and clean, minimalist look. Another good furniture piece you can add to this style would be the Naomi Home Rachael kitchen cabinet. I would personally choose to do the natural finish for this style, since it has that exposed visible grain and that wooden finish.
I think the Rachael kitchen cabinet is a good choice for this home decor style, especially since it has a lot of space for storage. Yeah, I agree. Both of these furniture choices are very minimalist, so they're a perfect addition for your organic modern home. Something I, I like about this style is how it uses a lot of natural materials.
I like a lot of wood. While I don't like the lighter woods, I prefer more darker woods, they still use woods, so that's something I really like. I like the terracotta usage it has, and just the fact that it's environmentally friendly. I do have to agree with you that I do like the natural use within this home decor style, exclusively the stone usage, stone kitchen countertops, and, like, stone-related flooring.
So definitely I do like the addition of the natural materials. Um, organic modern is not my current result. My current test result is more accurate. But within the process of making the quiz, this was one of the results that I kept getting. That's why I do like this style a lot. However, what I don't like is the usage of wood.
Wood has never been one of my favorite materials to use. I am like you, that I do like the darker tones of wood. Mm-hmm. I'll- I'm okay with it, but only in a small amount within my decor. This one uses too much wood- Yeah ... in general. Yeah, we're complete opposites, 'cause I feel like I also don't like an aspect of it that you might like- Mm-hmm
which is how minimalist it is. I figured. It looks very, very nice. It is. It looks very zen. But I do- I would prefer if it had more decorations, maybe more plants. It's very, very minimalist. Yes. I feel like you see the zen in it because the plants implementation does make it feel more homey, even though it's a modern home decor style.
One of my favorite plants to integrate into my decor would be bamboo shoots, but small ones within a base. I used to have some of those when I was little, and I was actually able to maintain them and take care of them, and they're one of my favorite just 'cause I know how to take care of them. As for me- Mm-hmm
if I would incorporate a plant into my home- I think I would prefer flowers. Okay. I really just like a lot of colorful flowers, pinks and purples. I like big, round flowers, like hydrangeas or marigolds. Ooh. I like the, the color of marigold, the orangey. So if I would were to decorate my house, it would be with less plants and more flowers.
Yeah, I can see that working. I personally don't like flowers within my home decor style. It's not something that I see fitting within the organic modern home decor style that also doesn't implement flowers. It adds more of greenhouse plants into the decor. That's kind of curious about you, because I would feel like flowers have less of a pressure to keep alive, since they're already gonna die anyways.
I feel like- Uh-huh ... plants, you have to, you know that you're gonna have to take care of them and- Yes ... all of this stuff. I actually don't like flowers within my decor because they die too fast. Hmm. Okay, okay. You kinda have to constantly change them if you wanna have flowers- Yeah ... all year long. They're kinda like a seasonal type of decor.
Yeah, I agree. I see- Mm-hmm ... where you're coming from. But talking about plants and stuff, I think that's one of the similarities that these two styles have in common. I- Ah, yes ... both of them do like to use plants. Of course, biophilic more than organic modern, but they're both known for being very, in a way- Mm-hmm
like, spiritual. Again, they value wellness, and they find sanctuary in more natural spaces. Yes. They're very big fans of bringing the outdoors in, having all those natural materials. They're quite similar. That's why I paired them together for this episode. But one of the things that they don't have in common is that organic modern is strictly minimalist home decor- Hmm
style, while biophilic could be minimalist, could be maximalist or a happy medium. I also see a difference is probably the furniture Organic modern- Right ... is much more modern, um, whereas biophilic does like those biomorphic shapes and soft curves. Yes, that is true. They like those shapes and the curves, which relates a lot to the organic shapes, making them look more natural than just strict lines in the furniture.
That's one of the things I disagree personally with organic modern when it was the home decor style that I matched with originally. I like the furniture that has organic shape and- Mm ... those soft curves. Organic modern is a little too modern for that. Yeah, I was about to say. Mm-hmm. Yes. But I think that's something that you should bring into your home if you want to follow organic modern style or if you got this result.
The modern furniture is a big piece of it. That is true, yes. I would also say more, like, tiny details that this style does like are things like woven pendants. So it would be something I would add to the style. Definitely those woven pendants from either rattan or bamboo would be a nice addition. I would say bringing a lot of stone, and not just rocks and minerals into your decor.
Make sure you have quartz kitchen countertops or tile floors. That integration of stone into this style is one of the main reasons that I do like it, which is why I would feel comfortable living in this home decor style. I would be fine living in it. Yeah, I see that for you, especially because you got this result so many times.
Yes. As for me, though, I wouldn't mind it. I would like for it to be a little more maximalist. Mm. So maybe I'll add some extra decor here and there. Yeah. But other than that, I think it looks really nice. I like the furniture it uses. I like the plant. I like the color palette, even though it's a little less colorful than what I would personally go for.
But overall, I think it's a solid home decor style. True. Now to summarize organic modern, we went over the personality traits- Mm-hmm ... which describes people as b- as having a balanced soul, feeling grounded, valuing wellness. People who have this style tend to be calm and approachable. We went over the color palette, which is very monochromatic.
It has a lot of different stone tones. Mm-hmm. And f- for an accent here and there, it has more earthy tones, but muted as well, so it keeps that monochromatic look. We went over how it uses mostly natural materials, so you'll see a lot of wood, stones, rattan, and terracotta. Furniture, of course, keep it modern.
Keep those rounded edges and chunky furniture bases. We went over the fabrics and little decor details, like the woven pendants that you can use here and there to have an organic modern home. So we are reaching the end of this episode, but before we close out this chapter, Val and I are going to rate these styles on our tier list.
We do want to disclose that we will be rating them according to our own personal preferences. So don't worry if you don't agree with our choices. There will be times that Val and I won't even agree with each other. So if you never heard of a tier list before, essentially it's a ranking system from best to worst, S being the top ranking, followed by A through F.
And for S rank, we will exclusively only leave four choices out of the 56 styles. Out of those four choices, Sue gets two, and I'll get the other two. Yes, and for those listening in, we will have the tier list up on the screen, so if you wanna tune in and see the current standing of all the home decor styles we talked about previously, you can.
And just to be clear, the order on the tier list does matter as it is placed within their tiers. So to move on to the ranking, out of these two, I think this is one of the episodes where it's hard to choose which is your favorite. I agree. They both have their own, like, little charm to it. Mm-hmm. And I'm kind of torn between organic modern being minimalist and the other having the choice of making it maximalist.
But I think I like organic modern more. Really? Yeah. I'll be surprised. I obviously do pick organic modern. That was the choice I had for the longest time, but biophilic is also a good choice. Yeah, I agree. Very nice. But now to the fun part. Where do we see these home decor styles on the list? We should start with organic modern, since it was our favorite.
I would honestly put it as an S tier, but we still have so many home decor styles to go through, so I will leave it on A for now. Maybe a potential S tier for me. I'll let you pick biophilic, since I already hijacked organic modern. I would have also put it at A. Okay. I thought you were gonna put it at S, but you're right, we can move them- Mm-hmm, yes
later on. So we'll see where everything ends up being at. But for biophilic, I would put it at B. B? Okay. That's- B, yeah ... That sounds fair. Yeah, that's good. But I think... What else do we have on B? On B right now we have mid-century modern first, and then industrial- Oh ... after it. So do you wanna put it in between or in front of mid-century modern?
I'm not sure. You're not sure? Yeah. I think we will leave it at third place. At third place? Okay. What do you think? We'll leave it in third place for, for now. So we're set, and that will do it for this episode. Thank you to all our home decor lovers for listening in. Once again, I'm Sue. And I'm Val. And this was Design Meets Decor, brought to you by Naomi Home.
