INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN CAMPUS NEWS,
The Big Ten is adding a postseason conference volleyball tournament. The tournament will run from Nov. 20-25 at Fishers Event Center in Fishers Indiana. The top 15 teams in the regular season will be included in this conference. This is the first time the Big Ten has offered this, bringing it to a similar standing as the SEC which also offers a postseason conference. In order to host the conference, they chose to reduce the regular season schedule from 20 down to 17 matches. Every team will play one another in a single, round-robin format. Wisconsin has ended the pre-tournament era with nine Big Ten championships and one National championship from 2021.

ALSO IN CAMPUS NEWS,
The Day of the Badger fundraiser raises over 2 million dollars. The two-day annual event combines alumni, students and supporters of UW-Madison to fundraise for campus programs and plans. The event hosted a Bucky Squishy scavenger hunt, voting challenge and social media posts. This event is sponsored by the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association. Last year, the event raised 300,000 dollars. People can donate to any specific area of campus for their funds to go directly to, like mental health support or campus food access.

IN LOCAL NEWS,
The number of drivers ticketed for running a red light or stoplight in Dane county doubled from last year. This is due to the previous crackdown on ticketing, said the county's Traffic Safety Commission. It ran from March 12-21 and involved the Wisconsin State Patrol, Dane County’s Sheriff's office and 18 police departments in Dane county. Law enforcement made over 1,800 stops with over 1,500 tickets issued, 238 of which were red light or sign violations. This year, there were 99 arrests for criminal or warrant violations, which is three times the amount reported last year. Over 1,200 verbal or written warnings were also issued for risky driving.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor kills wife and himself. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said Thursday that both were found dead at their northern Virginia home after the couple’s teenage son called 911 shortly after midnight. The couple was going through a divorce. Officers had been there in January after Fairfax alleged his wife had assaulted him. Police found there was no evidence of assault. The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home when the shootings occurred. The shooting stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding “what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce,” Davis said. Fairfax appeared to have shot his wife several times in the basement of the home before running upstairs to the primary bedroom, where he shot and killed himself, Davis said. The couple had been living together in separate bedrooms while separated. Fairfax faced sexual assault allegations in 2019 during his term as Lieutenant Governor but did not resign. After finishing his term he ran for Governor but lost. He has not held or sought any office since.

PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Brewers snap six game losing streak, follow it up with series victory. Wednesday night, the Brewers faced off against the Blue Jays amidst a six game losing streak. They lost the last two against Boston, got swept by the Nationals and lost Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays. They were down 1 to 0 after six shutout innings from Dylan Cease. The Brewers then capitalized on some good luck in the eight to take the lead 2 to 1. Runners reached 1st and 2nd on infield balls that could not be fielded. William Contreras then singled, bringing in a run and moving the other to third, who then scored on a Brice Turang groundout. Abner Uribe then came in the game and retired the side to snap their longest losing streak since 2023. They then followed up that performance by winning 2 to 1 on Thursday. Another comeback win saw the team down 1 to 0 and coming back to win back to back days. Brandon Sproat pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, his first quality start as a Brewer.
