Hebrews 11: 31
A weekday morning devotional series written by Aaron Marcarelli and hosted by Chad McBeam
“By faith the prostitute Rahab did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.”
Hebrews 11:31 NASB2020
Joshua has two spies go to Jericho to see what fortifications they have and how difficult it will be for the Israelites to take the city. Now these spies are not very good because they are spotted. When they are spotted, their presence is reported to the king of Jericho.
Now the spies decide to spend the night in the house of a prostitute. (A brothel). The king knows that is where the spies are staying. The king tells the prostitute (her name is Rehab)who owns the brothel to bring the spies to him. Rahab has heard all the stories of how the God of Israel has saved them from bondage in Egypt, provided for them in the dessert, and she believes that the Israelites have been given the land that Jericho is in. She believes that even Jericho will fall to the Israelites. Therefore, she makes a deal with the spies.
“and she said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. When we heard these reports, our hearts melted and no courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below. Now then, please swear to me by the Lord, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s household, and give me a pledge of truth, and spare my father and my mother, and my brothers and my sisters, and all who belong to them, and save our lives from death.” So the men said to her, “Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the Lord gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”
Joshua 2:9-14
God uses everybody, even the faith of a prostitute. God rewards her faith and she and her family are saved after Joshua and the Israelites are given the victory at Jericho.
“Then they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold, and the articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. However, Rahab the prostitute and her father’s household and all she had, Joshua spared; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.”
Joshua 6:24-25
You never know who God is gonna use. God has used what the world would consider as unsavory people to minister to me in my time of need. We must be open to God’s Devine appointments. We do this by seeking God 1st. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.”
Matthew 6:33
