What is The Do What Is Necessary Podcast?

Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.

Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.

I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.

This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!

Nobody is immune to becoming stuck.

It's just natural.

It's part of business.

It's part of life.

We all face challenging problems,
such as energy slumps, bottlenecks.

And sometimes it's our own self
destructive habits that do us in.

Some days, it feels like when we get
out of bed that we're wearing cement

boots trudging through knee deep mud.

When you work for yourself though.

And you run your own business.

Getting stuck.

Can be harmful, even though it's
normal, it can be extremely harmful.

But when it comes to getting unstuck as
entrepreneurs who are in charge of our own

workflow, in charge of our own processes.

We must especially get resourceful.

We need to find the solutions
and find them quick.

So today I want to talk about five
strategies that have helped me in dealing

with the times that I get on stuck.

And yes, I get stuck
just like everybody else.

So if you're stuck in a rut, hopefully
one of these five things will help.

Or the next time you that
you're stuck in a rut.

Hopefully one of these five things help.

The first thing.

We need to shift our viewpoint.

When you're stuck, you
need to remove roadblocks.

We need to remove the things
that are getting in our way.

And sometimes the best way to do
that is to find a creative outlet.

Or find something that allows
you that sense of calm.

When you're stuck, the worst
thing that you can do is sit

and stare at a computer all day.

Or worse, you just doom
scroll through social media.

Change your perspective, change
your viewpoint, change what you're

looking at, even if it's 10 minutes.

Sit down for 10 minutes and
doodle on a piece of paper.

Just write down what's in your head.

Lie down on the floor,
lie down on your couch.

Stare at the ceiling.

Go for a walk.

Whatever we need to do.

We need to change what our viewpoint is.

The study suggests that we're
most effective when we're

comfortable, when we're calm.

So don't feel bad if you
need to pause to refocus.

Number two.

Allow yourself to be stuck.

Allowing yourself the opportunity to
be stuck is really difficult to do.

We, we tend to fight it so bad.

Don't fight it.

Don't resist it.

Just allow it to happen.

Surprisingly allowing yourself to really
observe what it feels like to be stuck.

Those moments, like I said, when
it feels like we're wearing cement

boots, treading through mud.

That allows you the ability to
really sit down and understand.

Why you feel that way?

Take the opportunity to ask
yourself some questions.

What is causing me to
feel trapped right now?

Is it that I'm terrified.

Is it that I'm worried about something?

Am I frightened about something?

Is there something that I'm missing?

Do we have FOMO fear of missing out?

Is it possible that I've just
completely gone off the rails?

Taking the time to ask yourself
those questions, you can

generally find an answer.

That offers you the ability
to get some traction, to get

that feeling of control back.

So that you can continue to move forward.

And that you can look at
those issues more deeply.

That you can start to recognize signs
of those feelings in the future.

For that next time that
you're going to get stuck.

The third point and the third strategy is
to get over your fear of making a mistake.

Now I frequently work with
entrepreneurs who want to get ahead.

They want to move their business forward.

But they're stuck.

They wonder.

Okay, how do I connect with others
in the industry that are going

to help me advance my business?

How do I construct the
perfect business plan?

Or how do I create the perfect pitch?

So that I can sell something.

How do I create the perfect roadmap?

And my answer is simply this.

Who says that has to be perfect.

And this is coming from a
recovering perfectionist.

Isn't life really at its core,
a big experiment of some kind.

The issue is that most of us were
terrified of making a mistake.

We're terrified of getting it wrong.

We're too preoccupied with
devising the next innovation or

the next innovative approach.

Or a perfect roadmap to get there.

Then the window of opportunity closes.

And then we get stuck.

Is there some crazy thought or some
crazy idea that you just can't let go of?

Is it worth a shot?

Is it worth taking a shot?

What do you have to lose?

Now sure you, you should do your homework.

Like, like we should, I'm not
saying go out there and do crazy

things without thinking it through.

But often the opposition that I
get when, when I ask my clients.

Or make a recommendation that
they should do something is.

You want me to do what.

Well that that'll never work.

Really.

Have you, have you given it a shot?

Have you truly tried something different?

Or.

Are you just frightened of seeming
stupid or making a mistake?

Number four is kind of a crazy one.

Do some pushups.

Any physical exertion here, you can fill
in the blank, but I picked pushups as

an example because I hate to do them.

And since they're so tough for
most of us, myself included that.

That's really the only thing that
the first thing that came to mind a.

Is the physical activity.

When you're doing pushups, you can't
hear those negative voices in your head.

You can't play the, what if
scenarios or the worst, worst

case scenario loop in your head?

Simply Huff and puff your
way through some pushups.

And I guarantee you you'll have
gotten far away from the issue.

And to be able to think more clearly.

Number five is to get some support.

Now I talked to a lot of small
business owners and entrepreneurs

who believe they should be able
to handle everything on their own.

And that they should be able to
handle everything on their own.

All the time.

That creates a tremendous
amount of stress.

And quite frankly, It is completely
unattainable in today's work environment.

You can't do everything on your own.

In most circumstances, it's always easier
to address difficulties in a large group.

Whether that's online.

Or in a virtual session where
you're brainstorming solutions to

a problem together with others.

We all need a support system of
people that are going to encourage us,

support us, and challenge our beliefs.

Working with a group or working with a
coach who can be a sounding board, and

sees the potential that you have is always
a good investment when you're stuck.

Now I'm going to give you a bonus tip.

If you've hanging out to
the end of this podcast.

My bonus tip.

Is this.

Take solace in the fact that getting
stuck is all part of the process.

Recognize that getting stuck as a
normal part of the growth process.

Often that stuck feeling
worsens just to be for a great

business or life breakthrough.

It's crucial not to ignore
the sense of being stuck.

But to recognize that it's there
for a reason to work with it.

And to remind yourself, that
it won't remain indefinitely.

It's not going to stick around.

You'll be able to get unstuck.

Now that line for a a Batman movie,
I'm not sure which one it really was.

Comes to mind when I end this podcast.

It's always darkest
immediately before the Dawn.
