The Lion Counseling Podcast helps men escape the cages that hold them back and become the Lions they were created to be. It exists to help men obtain success, purpose, happiness, and peace in their career and personal lives. The podcast is hosted by the founder of Lion Counseling, Mark Odland (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified EMDR Therapist), and Zack Carter (Counselor and Coach with Lion Counseling). In their podcasts, they address a variety of topics relevant to men, including: mental health, relationships, masculinity, faith, success, business, and self-improvement.
One of the leadership principles Jocko and Echelon Front teach extremely well is prioritize and execute. When everything feels chaotic, you cannot solve everything at once. You step back. You identify the highest priority. You execute that first.
Mark Odland:Then you move on to the next priority. That is excellent. It works in business. It works in a crisis. It even works in family life much of the time.
Mark Odland:But here's where high performing men often struggle. They know this principle. But when their nervous system is flooded, they can't access it. They do not prioritize. They spin.
Mark Odland:They overthink. They jump from one thing to the other. They react to whatever feels most urgent instead of what's most important. And sometimes they collapse into avoidance because the whole situation just feels too big, too overwhelming. It's not because they're weak.
Mark Odland:It's because overwhelm changes the brain. When pressure gets high enough, your ability to think clearly narrows. Your system moves towards survival. You may become hyper focused on threat. You may lose perspective completely, become rigid, become impulsive, even numb.
Mark Odland:And now the principle is still true, but the man just can't access it. That's the gap. A principle can be correct and still unavailable to a man whose nervous system is overloaded, and that's why the deeper work matters. If overwhelm is a recurring pattern, you have to ask why. Why does the type of pressure flood me so quickly?
Mark Odland:Why does this kind of conflict shut me down? Why does uncertainty make me feel like everything is falling apart? Why does one criticism, just one criticism, feel like a catastrophe? Often, in my experience, there's a history there. There's conditioning.
Mark Odland:There's an old experience that trained the nervous system to interpret certain pressures as threats. So when a man says, I know I should prioritize and execute, but in the moment he can't, I take that seriously because the problem may not be knowledge. The problem may be access. Can he access clarity under pressure? Can he access the calm?
Mark Odland:Can he access a truthful perspective? Can he access his own values? Access his training. If not, something is interfering and that's where the work is. At Lion Counseling, I help men increase their capacity to stay clear under pressure so they can actually use the principles they already respect.
Mark Odland:Prioritize and execute is powerful. It's powerful. But first, you have to become the kind of man whose internal system can stay steady enough to actually do it. If pressure floods you and you keep losing access to your best judgment, book a clarity call at escapethecagenow.com.
