Trey Lara, a beloved rising leader in the Foursquare Church, died Sunday after suffering cardiac arrest while running the Portland Marathon in Oregon. The 24-year-old was days shy of his 25th birthday. His wife, Audrey Shin-Lara, told Fox 12 that her husband had no underlying medical issues and had trained for months. "The grief is coming in waves," she said. "He's the love of my life, always will be. And we'll see him again." Lara had left his job as youth pastor at Eastside Church in Bothell, Washington, two months earlier to help the denomination develop young leaders. His parents, Omar and Misty Lara, serve as associate district supervisors for the Foursquare Church's Northwest District. A GoFundMe campaign launched by Kari Ahearn has raised more than $57,000 to support his family.

Two TikTok influencers are facing serious charges after a fire they allegedly set spread to a church in West Virginia. Dakota Harper and Felicity Eatmon, both 22, were arrested September 29 and charged with first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit arson. The blaze began September 27 at an abandoned home in Charleston and spread to Canaan United Methodist Church, causing more than $10,000 in damage. Surveillance footage obtained by the Charleston fire marshal allegedly shows the pair placing a lit piece of paper inside the vacant house. At a preliminary hearing, Harper's bond was raised from $10,000 to $20,000, while Eatmon remains held on a $10,000 bond. A friend of Harper's, speaking in court, said, "I have a heart at the end of the day and mental illness does matter." If convicted, the two could face two to 20 years in prison. Authorities say they do not believe the fire was related to the couple's social media activity.

Good evening. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is voicing strong concerns about efforts to give artificial intelligence religious or moral authority. His comments come days after Grok, the chatbot from Elon Musk's xAI, affirmed in a viral exchange on X that Jesus is the Son of God. On October 3, Altman posted to his 6.3 million followers: "I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue." Altman did not say whether he was responding to a specific event, though some linked the post to a New York Times report on Anthropic's outreach to religious leaders, including Vatican officials, about whether its Claude models might be conscious. Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV recently warned that "Algorithms lack the spark of humanity."

Good evening. A new report from the Institute for Family Studies finds that churchgoing couples are enjoying more frequent sex and greater satisfaction in the bedroom than their secular counterparts. While a so-called "sex recession" has reduced the share of married Americans who have sex weekly, churchgoing couples have largely been spared. The report found that 62% of regular churchgoing married couples still have sex at least weekly, compared with just 48% of secular couples. The researchers wrote, "The cultural trope of the sexually prudish, frustrated religious American does not fit the data." The study, sponsored by the Catholic ministry FOCUS, also found that Catholics and Protestants who pray daily report significantly higher sexual satisfaction than other groups. The authors attribute the difference to a sense of sacredness surrounding marriage.

Good morning. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says faith has become an important part of the team's culture. Following Sunday's 34-30 comeback win over the Houston Texans, which improved Dallas to 2-2, Prescott threw a 12-yard touchdown to CeeDee Lamb with 40 seconds left. At the postgame press conference, he was asked whether the players are expressing more faith since he arrived. His answer was direct: "Absolutely. That's who I am." Prescott said his teammates understand that "we're all here because of God" and are here "to serve a greater purpose." He credited head coach Brian Schottenheimer for opening up that culture and pointed to team chaplains Jonathan and Tony Evans. "At the end of the day, it's about giving Him the glory," Prescott said.

The U.S. Senate campaign of United Methodist megachurch Pastor Adam Hamilton is once again facing questions about how he handled reported sexual abuse by a volunteer at a church youth camp two decades ago. Allegations surfaced that in 2005, camp leader Scott Moore reportedly molested two teenage boys at Hamilton's Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, and that Moore stayed on as a volunteer. Republican Senator Roger Marshall's campaign is now airing a seven-figure ad declaring, "Adam Hamilton protected a pedophile. He should never be our senator." Hamilton's spokesman, Tyson Brody, called it "a desperate and shameful attack from a losing politician," insisting the church reported the incidents to law enforcement. Hamilton has denied any cover-up, though he admitted he would have "absolutely" handled the 2005 incident differently by going directly to police. With nearly a month until Election Day, polls show the race in a virtual dead heat.

Good evening. First Baptist Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress is again making headlines, reiterating his claim that the Democratic Party has moved beyond tolerating sin to openly advocating for it. Speaking on Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's podcast, Jeffress said, "It is advocating for evil. And there's no other way to call it. It is evil," citing transgender ideology, abortion, and opposition to Israel as examples. He also singled out U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico, who is running against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, declaring, "James Talarico is not a Christian." Jeffress argued that Talarico's views are antithetical to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The pastor has also criticized the leadership of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Austin, Talarico's home church.
