Welcome back to Chapter and
Verse Junior with Dewey and Jill.
This is a fun place for kids
to learn about God, the Bible,
and how much Jesus loves you.
So buckle up for today's story
because this is one adventure
you are not gonna wanna miss.
Let's go
Hi, Dewey.
Hey.
How are you doing?
I'm good.
I guess I'm good.
You guess?
Yeah, I mean, school's out,
so- Okay ⦠I'm, I'm happy.
You're happy.
Yeah.
Well, I was always very
happy when school was out.
I'm bored.
Summer was my favorite.
Boredom is okay, Dewey.
Like, that's when we are creative and
we are excited about, like, finding
new ways to entertain ourselves.
Boredom is the gateway to
creativity uh, I guess.
I guess.
Okay.
Well, how about a story then?
Yeah, tell us a story.
Okay.
So we're gonna talk today
about the Good Samaritan.
Have you ever heard
about the Good Samaritan?
Um, I, it sounds familiar, but I don'tâ¦
I, I'm just gonna tell
you I probably don't know.
You probably don't know?
No, I probably don't.
Okay.
Well, that's okay.
We're gonna, we're gonna talk about
it, and you'll know by the end.
Okay.
You'll, you'll know all about it.
I'm ready.
Okay.
So this is what, um, they call a
parable, which is essentially a story
that has a, a different meaning.
Like, it's, it's a story
to teach a lesson- Oh, okay
basically.
Who's telling it?
Jesus is actually the one telling this.
All right.
And it's foundâ¦
That means it's found
in the New Testament.
Yep, that's right.
Where in the New Testament?
So i- we're gonna start in Luke 10:30.
Okay.
So, um, prior to this, Jesus is talking
to some people, and they're asking
him all kinds of questions, so- I
would've asked him a bunch of questions
I mean, me, too.
I would've just said- I- ⦠"Was Adam
and Eve born with a belly button?"
Well- Did they have a belly button?
I don't think so.
That blows my mind.
I know, right?
Wait, Dewey, you're a puppet.
Do you have a belly button?
Well, I mean, they're human.
Yeah.
So I know those humans
have a belly button.
No, I do not.
That's true.
But- That's true.
But they weren't born.
Do you have a belly button?
I do have a belly button.
Okay.
I will not show it to you.
I don't wanna see it.
Thank goodness, 'cause you
wouldn't see it anyway.
All right.
Anyway, but- So that's one of the
questions I'd ask him, but- I feel
like- ⦠I guess, I guess they didn't.
I feel like that's not
a question I wouldâ¦
Like, obviously, when we get
to heaven, we can ask all the
questions, but I'm not gonna bother
asking- We're gonna have forever.
I know, but I'm not gonna bother
asking Jesus that question.
I'm gonna ask Adam that question.
Oh, well, that's true.
Like, "Hey, Adam, do you
have a belly button?"
You know.
That's true.
That's true.
I wonder if our glorified bodies that we
get in heaven will have belly buttons.
Now that's just getting over my head.
That's hurting my head to think about.
That's a question for Brother Dean.
Yeah.
He, he can answer it all.
Yeah.
Anyway, we're gonna talk about
the Good Samaritan instead.
Okay.
So it starts in verse 30, and it says,
"Jesus answered him with a story."
What was the answer?
The story is the answer.
But what was the question?
Well, the q- Did you already say that?
I probably wouldn't pay attention.
No, I was just saying that,
um, he had been asked a bunch
of questions from people.
Oh.
So if you wanna back up to verse
29, it says, "The man wanted to
show that he had been right to ask a
question, so he asked, 'Who are the
people near to me that I must love?'"
So, like, prior to this, Jesus
is talking about, um, the two
commandments that he gives.
Like, instead of the 10, he
gives the commandment to- He
knocked it down to just two.
Oh, yeah.
We don't have to obey the other ones.
Well, in obeying the, the two Jesus gives
us, those two encompass all other 10.
Like, if you do the two that
Jesus says, you are automatically
going to do the others.
What were those two?
Those two were to love God and to love
your neighbor- Oh ⦠as yourself.
Won't- Yeah ⦠you be my neighbor.
That's a old show.
That is, but it was one of my faves,
and I would still watch it today.
I think it's pertinent, and Mr.
Rogers is wonderful.
Yeah, I've seen one or two episodes, too.
My favorite was the crayon one.
I don't remember that.
Oh, where they make the crayons?
Yes.
Yeah.
Where they make the crayons.
It was a great one.
I like watching that.
Anyway.
So he's answering who his neighbor is.
Yes.
So he's answering who- Who's my neighbor?
Who are the people near
me that I must love?
That's the question.
Who are the people in your neighborâ¦
That was from a different show.
That was from a different show.
This is all coming back to my head.
I mean, Dewey, let's-
Okay ⦠let's even focus.
I could go on and on.
Yeah, okay, I'll focus.
Let's, let's start.
We haven't even started the story.
It's okay.
Okay.
So here we go.
So in verse 30, it says, "Jesus
answered him with a story.
'A man was going down the road
from Jerusalem to Jericho town.
On- Hey, something else
happened in Jericho.
Something else did happen in Jericho.
We'll have to talk about that later.
Maybe that'll be another
story for another time.
Okay.
Okay.
I'm glad to hear that you
know that story, though.
I do.
Okay.
'Cause it was on VeggieTales.
Maybe we'll flip the script,
and you can tell me that story.
Maybe.
And I'll ask all the questions.
Maybe.
We'll see.
Maybe.
Anyway, so on the way to- Jericho.
Some robbers attacked this man.
They took away all of his clothes
and they- They took away his clothes?
Yep.
They stole all his clothes.
That's embarrassing.
It is very embarrassing.
Um, they took away all his clothes
and they hit him with sticks.
He was- That's mean.
Yep.
He was almost dead when they left him.
They really beat him.
They beat the snot out of him.
Yeah.
They, I mean, really, they
beat the blood out of him.
Like, he- That's awful ⦠he was
bloody and crazy and was almost dead.
That's a heck of a- That's
a heck of a beating.
Yep.
So, um, verse 31 says, "It
happened that a priest from the
temple was going along that road."
Oh, good, so he's about to
get some help because whatâ¦
A priest is like a preacher.
Correct.
A, a priest there knew all
of the, the laws of Moses-
Yeah ⦠knew all of the Torah.
So here comes the good guy.
Yeah.
Here comes a good guy.
Here we go.
So he sees the man who's lying there, but
he walked past him on the other- What?
⦠side of the road.
Yeah.
What in the world?
Yeah.
Why?
Why did he walk past him or
what- Yeah, why'd he walk past?
He seen somebody a- that
he wasn't all the way dead.
He was just mostly dead Okay, Man Max.
Like Miracle Max over there.
Um, yes, he was mostly dead.
Um- That means slightly alive.
Correct.
Um- So he just walked past him.
He crossed the street.
He like- He went to the other
side ⦠he didn't just walk past him.
He was like, "I'm going
on the opposite side."
Yep.
Maybe he, maybe he was
scared of the blood.
Uh, may- Maybe he was scared.
Maybe he was.
So that's kind of what I was gonna tell
you, is that on this particular road,
it was a very, very dangerous road.
So it was- We have some dangerous roads
in our town that my mom won't let me
go down, walk down in my neighborhood.
Okay.
Well, I- 'Cause there's
some mean kids there.
Okay.
So this was, uh, apparently, probably
much more dangerous than even that road.
Um, it was dangerous in that there were a
lot of, you know, bad people on that road,
as evidenced by the fact that this man
was- Well, yeah, they stole everything.
Yeah.
And beat him up.
Um, but also it was
physically a dangerous road.
Like it, um, it was very steep.
It changed elevation significantly in
a relatively short amount of miles.
Um- Oh ⦠so it was-
So it was like a hike.
Yes, it was, it was a
treacherous, treacherous road.
One time I tried to go up Mount Nebo.
I didn't even make it halfway.
Me either.
It's hard.
I can walk, I can hike around
Mount Nebo, but up and down, oy.
That's too hard.
Anyway, so the priest crosses the street
and does not stop and help this man.
That's not nice.
He, he wasn't listening to God.
Nope.
He wasn't.
So- We're supposed to love our neighbor
⦠right, that's what Jesus is telling
us here, is how to love your neighbor.
So the priest crosses the
street, and he keeps on going.
And then it says, "A Levite
was also going along the road."
Those were good guys, too.
They were.
We- I feel like they were, like,
the worship leaders I heard once.
Yep, they were.
Um- Oh, here comes another good guy.
Another good guy.
He'll help.
So it says, "A Levite was
also going along the road.
He came to the place where he saw
the man laying, and . He also walked
past on the other side of the road."
What?
So this is two good guys- What in the
world ⦠that came upon this man, who-
Strike two ⦠who's only mostly dead,
and- He was slightly alive ⦠slightly
alive, clearly in need of assistance.
He probably was yelling out, "Help."
I don't even know, honestly.
It, I don't, I don't know.
"Help me."
Um, maybe- That's just mean.
Yeah He probably was
groaning or something.
Surely.
I mean, otherwise, how would they
have known that he wasn't fully dead?
He's probably thirsty and hot.
Yeah.
So- That's awful ⦠it says,
"Then a man from Samaria was
also traveling along the road."
So I heard somebody say this w-
the Samaritans were not good.
So I don't know that I believe that the
Samaritans were not good, but there,
there was some, we'll call it some beef
between the Jews and the Samaritans.
The Jewish people did not
like the Samaritans, and the
Samaritans did not like the Jews.
How do you know who's who?
Like, how does he know,
hey, it's a Samaritan?
Did they wear something?
Oh, well, this guy was naked, so
I don't- No, I mean the Samaritan.
Oh.
Um, yeah.
I'm sure- They probably looked different.
Yeah.
I'm sure that they did not adhere
to the same kind of- Like, people
can tell right away I'm a puppet.
Uh, yes.
Because I only have half a body.
Well, you only have half a body,
and y- your body is made of,
like, felt and foam and not- Yeah,
they can see me from a mile away.
Yeah.
"Hey, there's a puppet."
Yeah.
Yep.
Yep.
So it's probably similar to that.
They just said, "Hey,
here comes a Samaritan."
Yep.
So, um, but so the, the Jews and
the Samaritans did not get along.
Um- Like me and Smartie,
we don't get along.
Like that?
Even worse than you and Smartie.
Worse?
Yeah.
Like, think aboutâ¦
Do you know, do you understand,
like, rivalries in sports maybe?
Yes.
My school plays this other school
in- Yeah ⦠in volleyball.
It would be like rivals.
Like- Yeah, we don't like
them ⦠like number one rivals.
We don't want them winning.
Exactly, and you don't want
anything to do with them either.
Nope.
Like, if you find out somebody
is from the other school- I
would never go to their school.
Yeah, exactly.
That's how this was.
But- They stole our mascot
They stole it.
Did they eventually give it back?
No.
They still have it.
So you don't have a mascot?
Well, our mascot is just a pair
of legs, so they don't have it.
We don't really need it, butâ¦
Is it insensitive of me to laugh?
No.
Okay.
I mean, that's okay.
I think, I mean, that's-
Do you think it'sâ¦
I don't think it's funny, but- I
mean, I- ⦠I'm not upset you're
laughing ⦠I don't, I don't think
it's funny that they stole your mascot.
I am finding the fact that your
mascot is a pair of legs comical.
Oh.
Is that insensitive?
No, but- I'm not trying to be insensitive
what's your mas- what was
your mascot in school?
Well, listen, we might get canceled,
'cause my mascot was an Indian.
It was the Indians.
Oh.
But then after I graduated,
they, um, couple years later
they changed it to the Phoenix.
Oh.
And interestingly enough, the local
Indian tribe was mad that they changed it.
They wanted to be the mascot.
They wanted, they wanted to be the mascot.
Yeah.
Ours is just a pair of legs,
and they still have it.
Well, hopefully you'll get them back soon.
I mean, like I said, we don't
need it, but it is our mascot.
Gives you something to fight for, right?
Yes.
Anyway, okay.
So he came to the place
where the man was lying.
When he saw him, he
felt very sorry for him.
So this mean guy.
Mm-hmm.
This Jew.
So the guy that, that, so Jesus- He
doesn't like ⦠at this point Jesus
is talking to a bunch of Jewish people.
So the fact that he chose to make the,
um, the good guy in this story a Samaritan
is significant, 'cause Jesus would have
understood how big a deal it was to-
'Cause they didn't like those people.
Correct.
Yeah.
So it was a, it was a significant
thing for Jesus to point out.
I bet he was a good storyteller.
I bet Jesus was.
People listened to every single word.
Do you ever listen to that, the
app Calm, like, to go to sleep?
I don't have a phone.
Oh, wellâ¦
I can ask my mom.
Can you think about, like, when your
mom or dad would tell you stories to
help you kinda drift off to sleep?
I always fell asleep, yeah.
I bet Jesus would've been great at those.
Yeah.
So peaceful.
Yeah.
Oh.
I'd love it.
'Cause sometimes when I
can't sleep I play the Bible.
That's a good idea.
Yep.
I'ma try that.
It's great.
It's, it's great.
I'ma try it tonight.
Sometimes I have to do itâ¦
You remember Ms.
Carrie, she told me to try playing it in
a different language so that I don't get
caught up in the story and listening and,
and having- She is the smartest- She is
most beautiful person in the world.
She really is, Dewey.
You are not wrong.
She is one of my faves.
One of my faves.
One of my faves.
Mine too.
Okay, so- Anyway ⦠he's telling
it, and he used somebody they hated-
Yep ⦠to turn into a good guy.
Yep.
So he's talking about the Samaritan,
and he says, "He went across to him."
So the Samaritan was already on
the opposite side of the street,
and instead of staying on the, this
oppsi- opposite side of the street
from this man who was, you know,
mostly dead, he, um- Slightly alive
slightly alive.
He actually walked over
to him to check on him.
And it says- That's nice.
Yeah.
And again, this was a very dangerous road.
So this man had already been beaten
up and robbed and everything.
And the Samaritan wasn't even caring.
No.
That he might get beat up too.
Well, I mean, he, he certainly knew
it was a risk, um, 'cause this also
could've been a trap, you know?
They could've pretended.
I didn't even think about that.
Mm-hmm.
This could've been, like, a whole
thing where he was lured over there,
and then he was actually beat up and
stolen and robbed and everything.
Yeah, that could've been a trap.
Yep.
But he still stopped.
He did.
He- And those other two
religious people didn't.
Yeah.
He didn't just stop, though.
So he also, um, it says, "He
poured oil and wine on the places
where he was bleeding," which
in, in those days was medicinal.
So, like, he wouldâ¦
It would be the equivalent of
him putting, like, Neosporin and
Band-Aids and alcohol and cleaning
his wounds and stuff and changing-
My mom's into the essential oils too.
Oh, yeah?
She put some myrrh on me, my s- my cut.
I always have to go to Ms.
Carrie for my essential oil stuff.
Yeah, I heard she was.
She's, she's real good at it, but-
She smells like them all the time.
Iâ¦
Listen, they're great.
They're great.
I'll do what you said so.
So he put some oils on it.
"He put oil and wine on the
places where he was bleeding.
Then he tied those
places with clean cloths.
After that, he put the man on
his own donkey to carry him."
So he, he- Yeah, 'cause he couldn't walk.
He'd been beat up.
Right.
And so, so this man decided to forgo his
own comfort and walk the rest of the way.
And it was steep, you said.
It's steep and treacherous and crazy.
Like leading up somebody on Mount Nebo.
And we don't know how
far he was having to go.
Like, he still could've
had 10 or 12 miles to go.
We don't know.
This was a good person.
Yep.
So it says, "They arrived at
a small hotel, and he took
the man- They had hotels?
They did, yeah.
Well, I guess so.
Jesus- You're traveling, you have to-
was kinda born in kind of one.
Well, Jesus was born in a cave
because the hotels were all full.
That's true.
That's true, yeah.
Yeah.
So anyway, so it says they,
he arrived at the hotel.
He took the man in, and
he took care of him.
And the next day, the man from Samaria
took out two silver coins from his purse.
I wonder how much that was worth.
Um, from the, from the stuff that I
have read, it was about two days' wages.
Wow.
Yeah, for a laborer.
That's a lot.
Um, so it says, "He gave himâ¦
He gave the money to the man who
was taking care of the hotel, and he
said, 'Be kind to this man for me.
This money may not be enough.
When I return, I will pay you for anyâ¦'
more that you have spent on him.
He went above and beyond.
He, he really did.
So he, he risked his own health
and safety by going over to him.
He, he didn't know what
was wrong with this man.
Like, he knew he was bleeding and, and
almost to death, but he didn't know,
like, there are all kinds of diseases
that could have made him appear like that.
So he risked the possibility-
Yeah, he could've had that- ⦠of
contamination ⦠what was that called?
Leprosy.
Yes, leprosy.
Yep.
Super, super, super contagious.
Um, so he's risking contamination, he's
risking, like, the possibility of him
being beaten up, like this being a trap.
He then gives this man his spot
on the donkey so that now this
guy's walking and, you know, not
just having to ride a donkey.
And then he gives his
actual money to this guy.
He, he just did everything.
And those other two didn't.
And he committed to
continuing to care for him.
So I mean, this is like, Jesus is
letting us know- He's like a hero.
He is like a hero.
Jesus is letting us know that this
man covered every single aspect
of the need that could arise.
It wasn't enough for this guy to just
drop him off at the hotel and be like,
"Okay, he's somebody else's problem now."
Yeah, I did my part.
Exactly.
He was like, "Let me, let me make sure
that this guy is fully taken care of."
That's really nice.
And so 36, verse or verse 36
says, "Then Jesus asked the
teacher of God's law a question."
So apparently, this guy
was, like, a lawyer.
Oh.
Yeah.
Um, he said, "Three men saw the
man that robbers had attacked.
Which of them showed love to him- I know,
I know, I know ⦠like a real friend?"
I know.
Did he answer it right?
I would've said the g- the Samaritan.
The Samaritan.
He, he answered in a manner of speaking
that is, he has a correct answer, but he
was so, there was so much animosity, there
was so much ugliness between the Jews
and the Samaritans that this man could
not even say the Samaritan was the one.
He said it was the man
who was kind to him.
What?
He couldn't even bring himself to
say- It was the- ⦠it was the
Samaritan ⦠Samaritan who was good,
'cause he didn't like the Samaritans.
Right.
Wow.
Yeah.
So, like, this is, like,
you know I'm from Michigan.
Yeah.
And so just, it's ingrained
in me to not like Ohio State.
But I am not so far into- You don't
hate him that much that you- I
don't, I don't hate them- If they
did something good, you'd say- ⦠at
all ⦠"Hey, they did a good thing."
Exactly.
If they were this, I could identify it
was the guy from Ohio State that did it.
Hey, I heard they had
a good marching band.
They do have- You should go look it up.
They do have a good marching band.
Go look at it.
I would rather watch the
Michigan Marching Band.
Are they better?
I don't think so.
I, I think it's subjective.
I think Ohio is better.
Do we- I haven't watched Michigan,
but I like the other one.
I think you sh- check them out.
Oh.
But also- I'll try ⦠if you
like Ohio State's better, then
we just won't talk about it.
But can you admit they have a good one?
I've said that they had a good one.
All right.
So you're not like that guy.
Correct.
You're gonna say it's good.
Yep.
Wow.
Anyway, so then Jesus
goes on and says, um, yes.
S- like, Jesus says,
"Yes, that was the guy."
He said, "So you should
go and be kind toâ¦
You should be kind like
that to other people."
He was teaching them
the, what's that called?
The golden rule.
Yeah.
Like you wanna- Do unto others.
Yep.
So we actually, interestingly, the United
States has, um, we have laws in place that
are called Good Samaritan clauses in laws.
That's from the Bible.
Mm-hmm.
And it's based off of this.
It's so that, like, if you stop and are
trying to do a good thing for someone,
and you end up either not being able to
help them or somehow inadvertently making
things worse, you won't get in trouble.
'Cause you were trying to do good.
'Cause you were trying to do good, yep.
That's a good, that is a good parable.
It is a good parable.
It's one of my faves.
I liked it.
Let's do another one sometime.
All right.
We can do, we can go down the little route
of- I have, I have a question, though.
Oh, what's your question?
On this table right here-
Mm-hmm ⦠is a Hershey bar.
There is a Hershey bar on the table.
Is, can I have it?
It's not my Hershey bar.
Well, can I have it?
Be a Good Samaritan.
Be a Good Samaritan and give you a
Hershey bar that isn't mine to give?
I mean, it's just sitting here.
How about we see if we can find
who owns the Hershey bar- And
see if they're a Good Samaritan
and see if they are a generous
person and will allow you to have it.
All right.
We'll let y'all know
what happens with that.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
So now we- That was good.
Let's do another one sometime soon.
All right.
We will.
All right.
We'll, we'll do a series.
Yes, let's do it.
All right.
I'm happy that you came and were able to
learn about the Good Samaritan this week.
Me too.
I'm gonna try to be like him.
That's a great idea.
I'll try.
Well, you know.
Hopefully- Sometimes I won't make it, but
sometimes I will ⦠hopefully we won't
come across anybody who's mostly dead.
They're slightly alive.
See you later.
Bye
