Anthropic, another leading AI laboratory, has called for the industry to slow down. while US President Donald Trump has pushed back against those concerns. Altman's comments came during a conference in San Francisco. Ira Spitzer reports.

Of course, the general public, or really almost nobody, is privy to the type of information that the leading AI labs like Anthropic have. So, of course, people are taking it very seriously when people at those companies express those grave safety concerns. But those leading labs have also faced criticism with some saying that this is an attempt to limit the progression of open-source AI and to create something like a duopoly with OpenAI and Anthropic around the issue of AI regulations.

Former US President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris have both called on Congress to pass federal laws regulating artificial intelligence, with Harris demanding the creation of a new oversight body for independent testing of AI systems. James Goodison reports from Washington.

There is a huge divide in Washington at the moment. They are caught between fear that China catches them up, fear that AI could destroy humanity if they don't act, fear of voters over data centers, and fear of businesses leaving the country. The fight for regulation is coming up against the stubbornness of Washington lawmakers. There's a number of factors as to why Congress is slow to act. Partly politics, for one, as ever, a limited legislation window before the midterm Elections in November and also, and this is perhaps the most important one, a lack of consensus about what exactly to do and how exactly to police it.

The US House of Representatives is set to vote on Wednesday on a Russia sanctions bill that would give US President Donald Trump the power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas. New Delhi, one of the world's largest buyers of Russian crude, has consistently said its energy purchases are driven by national interest.

This legislation, which still needs to clear U.S. Congress and needs to be approved by the U.S. president, gives the president powers to impose up to 100% tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil and gas. India is among the countries that could be potentially affected, alongside China, Hungary, Slovakia, Azerbaijan. Now, this doesn't mean that there will be automatic tariffs on India, but it could complicate India's already ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. The pressure point for India has been continued purchases of discounted Russian crude, which expanded after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

We take it as an indication of weakness on, on their side that they, they engage in these silly, trivial, uh, online fantasies, uh, which, uh, Really are beneath the the offices of the people who who occupy the most senior positions in the United States. We didn't start this. We're the victims here. We've been attacked. We have to stand our ground. If we don't, he'll just get worse and worse and worse. And ultimately, he has said candidly his objective is not to have a good business deal with Canada. His objective is annexation. Well, Canadians are not going to stand for that. We have no intention. of becoming a vassal state of quislings. The Canadian government says it wants associate membership of the EU, a classification that does not exist. At least, not yet. So let's continue talking about some of the things that are going on inside of the multiverse, because that's just kind of what we do around here. If we weren't doing that, I wouldn't be sure, um, exactly what to do. Uh, so just keep that in mind as we are talking. So I have to tell you, yesterday I was going through the sequence of events of things, because there is no other way of putting it. And I have to tell you, I found a clip that I don't know if I'm more in shock than anything else, but it's one of those things that I was just surprised to see. So yesterday, now, like yesterday, this is not a joke as I say this, there was a committee or a meeting at the Hill. Not a joke as I'm saying it. So Senator John Kennedy presses FBI Director Kash Patel about loosening of the FBI standards or hiring standards. And I want you to hear the clip because I think it's that important to take a listen to. So if you're good with this, let's move forward. Let's do this right now.

What about the bestiality? Same thing, because the regs wrote it up in a fashion before I arrived that addressed prostitution, bestiality, and trafficking. They were there before I got there. Tell me what it said before. It automatically disqualified any individual who participated on either side of it. Obviously, we are never going to hire the criminal. The side of what? The bestiality?

So you disqualified the animal? Well, I don't think we— we have great canines, but we're not going to disqualify them. I understand. I'm trying to understand why you did this.

this is not directed at you, Mr. Director. And I understand the game. People try to make you look bad. We do the same thing when, when the other party's in office. And all this stuff has really hurt the FBI. Why would you And in light of the context and what we're going through, and we're having a tough time attracting agents, good quality agents we all can trust, because so many people, fairly or unfairly, think that in order to be an FBI agent now, your political point of view matters. Why would you even get into BSCI? We are not into bestiality, but a lot of these individuals— I know you're not, but you changed— you changed— But I'm trying to explain it. Hang on. You changed the qualifications and mentioned bestiality. If Joe— if Joe participated in bestiality, not as the animal, but as the human, don't you think he ought to be disqualified? If he voluntarily did it, sure. But if he was trafficked into it— Okay. How do you involuntarily do it? In a lot of these cases, when human traffickers, who are some of the worst individuals on planet Earth, they don't just traffic you for prostitution, they traffic you for degrading acts of all kinds, and they force you into that type of conduct. And some of these individuals would go on to be law enforcement officers who qualified to be law enforcement officers and later applied to the FBI. I mean, this didn't initiate— these changes didn't start with you, did they?

Somebody came to you and recommended it.

And when you saw bestiality, I say this with respect, the person who recommended it, why didn't you just say, what planet did you parachute in from? Why do, why do I want to leave? That was my initial— Why do I want to leave with my chin and get into bestiality? That was my initial response, Senator. But they then explained to me and showed me cases in which people were forced into it and had applied to the FBI. And so I thought they should be considered. It's not an automatic disqualification. That's all.

Okay, so there you go. That is exactly what was going on yesterday. And I have to tell you, um, I was kind of going back and forth in regards of, uh, reviewing and taking a listen to some of it. And at one point I had to make sure because I had received it as an article first. Before it was received as a video clip. And I was like, okay, we need to make sure that before we do any of this, that we kind of figure out that it is not— and I am saying is not— something that's not real. You know, that it's not one of these things that we take a look at it and go, oh yeah, this makes sense. But then it doesn't make sense because It did not come from a real place. So there you go. After doing some research and taking a look around, yep, it's pretty legit. So there you go. Some stuff to think about as we are talking. So I guess let's get into some other stuff as we are talking. There was a former AI researcher that appeared on TMZ Live yesterday, and he talked about Google and AI. Take a listen to what was said. Maybe take a listen. Hold on, hold on. I got a board issue. Hold on. I need to learn how to hit the buttons. Why you left Google and what your concerns were about this.

Simon Marks [00:22:00]:
Yeah, I left Google. I was able to do a lot of the same kind of safety research at Google. I just wanted to do it now at a much bigger scale that I'm able to do now with our new org. There's a lot of talent and interest outside of the labs now to work on safety. And I wanted to be one of the people directing that in the right direction.

Speaker C [00:22:23]:
Rashid, was your feeling that they weren't focusing on the right things? Obviously, there are, there are guidelines at all these companies. There are executives who are in charge of alignment, I believe is what they call it. But is it that they were focusing on the wrong things or didn't see the danger growing as big as perhaps you did?

Simon Marks [00:22:47]:
I think it's, uh, it's— there's not like one company that's making this decision. I think it's a bunch of individual people at the company deciding what's important. And I think a lot of people at all the different AI companies are not yet, uh, valuing alignment research as much as, uh, as much as it's needed. And it was difficult sometimes to convince some individual researchers to to sort of work on the kinds of alignment problems I was excited about. And for the specific kind of alignment and safety technique I was interested in, it was difficult to recruit folks. And that's why I left to sort of be able to work on this in a 10-plus person team.

Okay, so there you go. That was going down on TMZ yesterday. So what do you think? Kind of gets interesting. I mean, it gets more and more interesting, no doubt there. So I don't know, it, uh, it becomes one of these, uh, weird things. So there you go, there you go. Okay, so let's continue talking because there's all kinds of stuff to discuss.

A Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has, uh, introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Accusing him of violating the Constitution through his handling of war with Iran. Massie argues that Hegseth continued military operation without congressional authorization and violated the War Powers Resolution. Thomas also, uh, Thomas' resolution contains 8 articles of impeachment and also allegations involving— I guess I should probably turn that off. Let's see, involving civilian casualties, military operations in Yemen and in the Caribbean, the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, and retaliation against critics. These are allegations made by Massie, not findings that Hegseth has been impeached or removed from office. Because Massie filed the resolution as a privileged measure, the House is required to take it up within the 2 legislative Hayes, setting up potential vote later this week. The Pentagon has defended Haggs, saying the department remains unified behind the leadership. So there you go. What do you think? Do they have a leg to stand or not? I am just wondering, wondering, wondering, wondering. So there you go. A lot of stuff there. Also, a 21-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested and accused of plotting a violent attack in support of ISIS. The federal prosecutors say that Jonathan Hunter Kramer had allegedly— yes, allegedly— pledged alliance to ISIS online, offered to distribute explosive manuals, and said that he's preparing for a mission but needed a weapon. FBI agents tracked down Kramer to a hotel after watching him leave his home and travel to a sporting goods store. Investigators say that he's— they see semi-automatic rifles 5 magazines and 190 rounds of ammunition, along with a scope, biopad, pepper spray, and entrenchment tools for about 30 knives. The FBI, uh, had previously investigated Kramer in 2023 when he was a juvenile, along with, uh, adjudicated delinquent in connection to alleged mass casualty plot. Authorities began investigating him After an anonymous tip following his release from juvenile detention, Kramer faces a federal firearms charge tied to alleged terrorism-related activity. Authorities have not identified a specific target for alleged attack, and prosecutors are asking, uh, to be held without bond, arguing that he possesses a danger to the community. So there you go. What do you think here? A lot of stuff going on, seriously. Uh, also yesterday, take a listen. Was it yesterday? Yeah, I think it was yesterday. Uh, the Kennedy Center board has voted to immediately close the main building for renovations expected to last 2 years. The decision came the same day after the federal judge again blocked efforts to add President Donald Trump's name to the Kennedy Center, ruling that Congress would need to approve any new memorial or name change. Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks from 2023 through 2027 models because of improperly assembled Fuel tanks, the straps that would allow the tank to shift, detach, or leak. That could create a road hazard, cause the engine to stall, or increase the risk of fire. Ford says that it knows about 16 warranty claims, but no crashes or injuries tied to the problem. Owners will begin receiving recall notices around September 21st, and dealers will inspect and replace the straps For free if needed. So there you go. A lot of stuff going on right there is what it sounds like. So what do you think here? I am just asking the question because it's gonna get interesting as it does move forward, no doubt about that. Okay, Gates Foundation is committing $1 billion, with a B, dollars, and, uh, for the next 2 years to expand access to artificial intelligence. with funding aimed at projects in healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Uh, 3 people were killed last night when NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashed and burst into flames at a Chatsworth parking lot near an earlier deadly Metro bus collision. The 2 people aboard the helicopter, uh, Helicopter, a pedestrian on the ground that died while another person was taken to the hospital. 4 vehicles and 2 storage containers were damaged. The helicopter had apparently been, uh, covering the bus crash, which, uh, itself killed 2 people and injured several others. NBC anchor Colleen Williams became emotional on the air, telling viewers that we have just lost contact with our people, before the station confirmed that the aircraft was theirs. A friend of the helicopter crew said that the aircraft may have suffered an engine failure, but that has not been confirmed by investigators. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the helicopter crash. So there you go, a lot of stuff going on inside of there, no doubt about that. So there you go. So what else do we got going on? Because of course we have some, uh, Some info to cover, no doubt here. Take a listen to this. Uh, federal authorities, uh, searched Peyton Penetere's Los Angeles home 9 days after the actress died and reportedly looking for evidence of narcotics or illicit narcotics, whichever one you want to look at. The DEA was involved in the investigation into Penetere's August 16th death in South Carolina, where she was found unresponsive and could not be revived. Police initially said There was no signs of foul play while emergency dispatch audio referenced possible overdose and cardiac arrest. Her boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother were at the residence when she suffered the cardiac arrest. An autopsy found no trauma that contributed to her death. So there you go. A lot of stuff going on for sure, and that I am sure that we're going to hear more and more. As the weeks continue. What do you think here? Because it is definitely an interesting time. I will tell you that yesterday's episode, I guess the main story, uh, Hit some people in a way that they did not love or appreciate. And I'm kind of amazed, if anything, about the amount of people that I heard from with the weird question. I always like when I get the weird question. It's a couple of different things. I love when it starts off with, I heard your show today. And were you talking about me?

Like, really? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It reminds me of that song, You're So Vain, You Probably Think This Song Is About You, Don't You, Don't You, Don't You. But that's not what we're talking about here. Yesterday's conversation was just about content creation in regards of what we do inside of the world of safety, and I wasn't trying to ruffle feathers with it. What I want to do is have real conversations of things that are going on. Like, I will tell you, I have seen the world of the weird in regards of some of the requests that people request in regards of some of the strangest things. Like name value. For being associated to others. I'm being serious. That is not a joke as I say that. So all of a sudden there is this world of belief of street cred because your name is attached to something else, and all of a sudden you see your name with someone else. I don't understand that. It gets very confusing to me. Yeah, I guess you are. You do represent the people you hang around to some extent. But does it get strange when you start taking a look at some of this other stuff? Does it get strange when you start taking a look at some of these weird things that are going on? I'll tell you, as I have said before, To some extent, I got into safety by accident. And I think that that's kind of where a lot of people end up. I mean, Jill James has a whole show called The Accidental Safety Bro because that's how common this is. And I look at this and I go, what are we trying to do? You are aware, and I'm not picking here, that the whole goal here is to make people be a little safer than what they were on certain aspects. It's not that I didn't become popular at some point, so now I'm trying to do content creation so I can become popular. Inside of this world. Here's the funny thing. You are aware that some organizations do some strange shit. And when I say the strange shit, this is what I'm talking about. They will have some big video production day to show how safe they are in the world, opposed to it being, let's be safe. And I don't need to show people what I'm doing. You know, it reminds me a lot of when people help out other people, but they want to record it for social media purposes. Like, I remember a video that I saw many, many years ago. This dude goes to McDonald's. I want to say he buys something like 100 hamburgers because it's something astronomical. And then he goes out and he starts distributing them. But as he distributes them into this area of unhoused people, he decides to record them as they're getting the food and as they're eating that and trying to get them to reference his social media and how he's helped them. And all of a sudden he's recording it. As they're eating, and probably one of the worst moments for the person. Not that they're eating, but going through these life struggles. And back then I thought it was very strange because of why would you record this when somebody's down? And sometimes I kind of feel, and it's a feelings moment, that this is what we do with our safety programs. We want to have that big moment, if we can say it that way, to make sure that other people realize, oh, look how safe blah blah blah person is. Are you doing yourself a service or a disservice by doing something along those lines? That's the stuff we need to start talking about. I know we have a lot of conversations about things that are going on in the world, but man, does it get weird. Where all of a sudden we're trying to chase clout, where we're trying to, uh, chase social media likes. I don't understand it. I mean, I want you to think about this real quick. Normally, if you are a person that's talking about safety and the person you're talking to has no idea about it, What do they normally go by? Oh, you're one of those really safe people. You do the OSHA stuff. That's normally the comments. Or they think you're kind of one of these weird people. Like, I remember pretty vividly, I worked for this pretty large transportation and logistics company, and they had their safety guy. And this safety guy was mostly known for a few things. That he would come and stripe your floor for where your product needed to go. He would put barricades up and guards inside of your warehouse, but you had to request them kind of ahead of time because he was one person and he worked the whole company. Now, this is where it gets interesting to me because now we've gotten to the point where we want to have People that are doing social media, but also doing safety and going out there and just talking about how great they do the stuff inside of the company. Like, I know this one particular guy that he talks around the drive to zero bullshit on social media all the time, even though behind the door he will tell you he doesn't believe any of that shit. It gets weird sometimes on some of the things that the work requests from you. So I look at it this way, at the end of the day, what are we really chasing? Because why does it have to be so strange opposed to it just being the way that the world should be? How come we are just not trying to help people to help people opposed to it being, oh, we need to post it on social media? Like, imagine a company contacting you saying, could you post about our event before our event? And if you come to our event, can you post about our event after our event and the people that you met? Very weird request.
