ATX Metal Podcast

The Breakdown
Heavy riffs for heavy hearts, and  show you do not want to miss. Ryan Rayle sits down with Seth Walker of BlackHat to unpack the band’s sound, the evolution of Seth’s writing, and why their live set hits harder than the record.

Seth breaks down how a move from shoegaze and emo into metal shaped his approach to fronting BlackHat, and why the band’s music feels like alternative metal meeting alternative rock with a lot more bite. He also talks about the chemistry that brought him into the lineup, how Brandon’s deep catalog of riffs gives the band room to build, and why BlackHat’s live version of “Rose Colored Eyes” becomes a bigger, more aggressive experience on stage.

You’ll discover:
-How Seth found his way from South Texas and Austin into BlackHat
-Why Thornhill and Loathe helped unlock his writing process
-What makes BlackHat’s songs land as “heavy dad rock” and “heavy riffs for heavy hearts”
-How the band is approaching new songs, live arrangements, and future guitar duties
-Why the band is already plotting bigger moves, from more Texas dates to possible out-of-state runs

Ryan and Seth also get into the reality of building a scene in Texas, from the value of unforgettable live shows to the challenge of keeping momentum between venues, releases, and the grind of local band life. They talk about the other projects and bands connected to the BlackHat orbit, the importance of community support, and the kind of exposure that can change everything for a rising band.

BlackHat is still early in their run, but the hunger is obvious. If you want to hear how a new metal band is sharpening its sound, building its scene, and getting ready to make noise at the ATX Metal Podcast Showcase on December 5th at Come and Take It Live, this episode belongs on your list.

BlackHat lineup: Seth Walker on vocals, Brandon Romero on guitar, Yoshi on drums, and Diego on bass. Perfect for fans of metalcore, alternative metal, Texas heavy music, and anyone who still believes the best bands are the ones you catch before everybody else does.

What is ATX Metal Podcast?

Support Local Music

RYAN RAYLE (00:01.175)
Ladies and gentlemen, we're here again. We're we got we got Seth with Black Hat sitting here getting ready to spill the beans about everything you need to know, Black Hat. I'm your host, Ryan. This is ATX Metal Podcast. Thanks for hanging out. This is in support of our end of your showcase, December 5th, at Come and Take It Live. Doors are at five and

This young man right here is going to set the tone and start the show at six o'clock. We're going to have some early bird raffles to kind of incentivize people to come out early. We're going to have giveaways. Each band is going to have one item that's given away. So you know, you can buy raffle tickets. But the way to get the raffle tickets on the house is you show up early. If you show up between five and five fifty-nine, you get 10 raffle tickets on the house.

Seth Walker (00:33.389)
Hell yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (00:56.879)
Plus, no, you can't. I mean, I'm giving away a pair of my acoustic panels valued at 200 bucks. we've got some other stuff that we're gonna give away. I'm trying to find a guitar that I can just give away because I think that would be really cool. But finding the guitar that gets donated is they're not in the best shape. So it's like but but yeah, super excited. We're gonna have some drink specials, something called a happy meal. It's gonna be a drink and a shot special for $7. And

Seth Walker (00:57.045)
Yeah, you can't lose there.

Seth Walker (01:16.141)
All right.

Seth Walker (01:25.547)
ooooh shit

RYAN RAYLE (01:26.743)
Yeah, I mean we're not trying to get too crazy, but you know, just trying to do some stuff to where it gets people out early. Cause I, you know, you I mean, it it's it's it's tough. But it will be a Saturday and it's right in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so we're pretty well positioned. we don't have too much we don't have too much competition. I think I set to kill is the night before, and then Darkest Hour is like the Tuesday before that. So I'll be at that one for sure. But anyway, for those that don't know you.

Seth Walker (01:33.014)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (01:41.054)
Right. Yeah.

Seth Walker (01:53.046)
Damn.

RYAN RAYLE (01:56.036)
Who are you? Where are you from? And what do you do in the band? And we'll go from there.

Seth Walker (02:01.803)
I'm Seth, I sing for Black Cat. I'll just say that I'm from South Texas. I moved from South Texas over in the area like 10 years ago, something like that.

RYAN RAYLE (02:16.791)
Are are you a true Texan? You born here, raised here?

Seth Walker (02:20.235)
Yeah, I was born in Tyler.

RYAN RAYLE (02:21.855)
hell yeah. All right. I know about Tyler. Couple couple homies up there. But

Seth Walker (02:27.019)
Yeah, and I grew up in King. I grew up in Kingsville and Corpus area. Not proud of it, but whatever.

RYAN RAYLE (02:31.521)
Okay. Okay. How did you how did you how did you come to be in the band Black Hat?

Seth Walker (02:40.274)
black hat. I left, I left Austin because I was in a band called Rain Check for a while in Austin. And that, that went south after a while and, personal issues brought me to San Antonio. So I was looking for a band over here and, damn, what is his Jamal, Jamal Buccus. And I hope I'm saying his last name right.

He's in a band called Honor Me. He's a vocalist for a band called Honor Me. But he hit me up one day and said, hey, some friends of mine are looking for a singer, you know, or a friend of mine is looking for singer. And he was talking about Brandon. So he connected me and Brandon and it just kind of took off from there. It's my first metal band. My first hit. It's my heavier band.

RYAN RAYLE (03:09.655)
yeah, Jamal. Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (03:35.011)
What were you what were you doing before that? What was the what was the the vibe that you were before?

Seth Walker (03:35.08)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (03:38.577)
It was like shoe gaze stuff. That's what I was doing. So for a while it was a difficult transition for me to figure out how to smoothly transition from riding shoe gaze shit to riding metal shit. But then I found certain influences and I'm like, cool, fuck it. I'm gonna keep doing the same emo shit I've been doing and I'm just gonna do it a little bit more aggressive this time.

RYAN RAYLE (03:41.739)
Ooh, yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (03:55.318)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (04:06.743)
I mean emo emo emo has has and will stand the the test of time. I don't I everybody has a little sad boy or girl in them that needs to just, you know, cry a little or Yeah, you know, like it it's it's I was just talking with the lead singer of Never Rest, Michael. He bartends at a bar close here close by and he was talking about how he's been trying to get that bar

Seth Walker (04:13.334)
yeah.

Seth Walker (04:20.711)
Yeah, some angsty shit.

RYAN RAYLE (04:36.365)
to have like an emo night. Not full on bands, but just, you know, karaoke with emo songs. And I pffff I know for a fact that the the target demographic they're looking for is definitely in the neighborhood that I live, because there's a bunch of there's a bunch of Mies in this neighborhood. I'm sure we could get fifty people in that small ass bar to, you know, sing some some some flicking my some MCR and and some

Seth Walker (04:38.695)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (05:02.568)
Yeah, something like that has the potential to get huge.

RYAN RAYLE (05:06.433)
Some saying. Right? I mean, yeah, especially for like little little I won't call them dive bars, but just bars that have a stage and like a speaker setup, you know? But but for those that don't know Black Hat, what's what's the vibe? What what's the music that you guys put out?

Seth Walker (05:16.294)
Yeah, exactly.

Seth Walker (05:23.782)
It sounds kind of corny, but I think it sounds cool. I just tell people we're like heavy riffs for heavy hearts.

RYAN RAYLE (05:30.721)
Ooh, is that on a shirt yet? If not, it should be. Jeez.

Seth Walker (05:33.399)
Not yet, it is not. But that's kind of how I put us out, put us, you know, explain our lives to people. also say we're like a heavy dad rock. We're like alternative metal meets alternative rock. Like a heavy death, a much heavier death tones, I guess.

RYAN RAYLE (05:49.787)
yeah. Yeah. Cause it's not it's not it's not death core. It's it's there's there's metal core elements, but yeah, you are right. It i it is in that vein of of kinda a little more tuned down tuned down tone down. but there is there's still some there's still some heavy parts in there. I mean, dude, yeah, I and I've s I've seen you guys play live I I think once. And I th I think I yeah, that's right.

Seth Walker (06:03.556)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (06:08.616)
yeah, live.

Seth Walker (06:14.851)
Yeah, the Mosh Network show, I think.

RYAN RAYLE (06:18.86)
I in and that was and I and I've said it a million times and I'll keep saying it. If you if you listen to a band, if you hear them, if a friend sends it to you, if it's on the radio or the algorithm spits it out and you like it, go see them live because that is what cements that relationship, in my opinion. And if and and the other thing is it's like that show will only be that show and that song will only be played that way once ever. So you're never

Seth Walker (06:31.087)
Yeah.

Yeah, exactly.

Seth Walker (06:48.13)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (06:49.036)
Even though it's the same songs played, you know, various times throughout the through the year, but that that experience will be that experience. And if you miss it, you miss it, you know? So

Seth Walker (06:59.715)
Yeah, what's an experience exactly like you said, every show is going to be a different experience, every song, a different emotional one.

RYAN RAYLE (07:06.702)
Yeah. Is there anything is there anything that you guys I guess leave open in the set for variability? Does that make sense? Like is there like a break like say like a breakdown is done this way on the album, but maybe somebody did it a little bit differently during one set and you're like, damn dude, okay, let's let's do that again.

Seth Walker (07:17.732)
What do you

Seth Walker (07:25.709)
yeah. Yeah.

Seth Walker (07:31.46)
we have a song called Rose colored eyes and we play that live. yeah. When we played that one live, that's my absolute favorite, especially to play live. but we play that song a little bit heavier live, especially at the end, we kind of slow it down a little bit more. I do, I do some, some, some pretty aggressive growls that I don't do on the record. And I get into, I get to get down into the crowd.

RYAN RAYLE (07:34.594)
One of one of my favorites, by the way.

RYAN RAYLE (07:49.059)
Okay.

RYAN RAYLE (07:56.194)
Right. nice.

Seth Walker (08:00.695)
you know, start headbanging and shit with the crowd and shit like that. That's my favorite fucking song to sing live. even like Courtney LaPlante. She does this thing before, before, soft spine. And she says this song goes out to everybody that I love to fucking hate. And that's, that shit is just so emotional. So I say that shit before rose colored eyes and it's fucking impactful.

RYAN RAYLE (08:24.932)
Yeah, dude, I remember seeing I remember seeing Spirit Box play at the HEB Center up here in Cedar Park with Periphery. And I took my daughter I took my daughter to see it. And yeah, I ran into like Seth and Britney and I think Taylor was there, as a few others. but yeah, I seeing Soft Spine played live was just

Seth Walker (08:35.777)
yeah, I think I was out there.

Seth Walker (08:43.489)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (08:49.004)
It ain't fucking incredible, dude.

RYAN RAYLE (08:50.626)
It was a whole nother experience. And my daughter, I think she was eleven, maybe twelve at the time. And she's just like, she's going for it. And then now she's anytime that we that we get in the car, she's like, can we listen to some music? And I'm like, sure. I hand over my phone and she just starts playing. Dude, she is surprising me with some songs that she goes and finds. And she said, Dad, I'm starting a a spreadsheet of all the Texas bands that I know. I was like

Seth Walker (09:04.363)
Ha ha ha.

Seth Walker (09:18.785)
That's fucking dope.

RYAN RAYLE (09:19.888)
It was like that's that's my girl. Thirteen.

Seth Walker (09:21.697)
And how old is she? Yeah, that's my oldest age. She's getting into, she's starting to get into more heavier shit.

RYAN RAYLE (09:32.161)
dude, taking her to a show is so much fun because I I didn't get to experience anything like that when I was growing up. Like I lived in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina, and I can't even begin to try to think about the first concert I went to. If but if I had to, it was somewhere on the East Coast when I was in like the military. And I think it was like fucking Hinder or something. Maybe probably nope, it was probably five finger death punch because I was in the Marine Corps and that's when they were

Seth Walker (09:40.714)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (09:54.602)
but.

Seth Walker (09:59.936)
And everybody's like, let's go see five finger death pause, dude.

RYAN RAYLE (10:03.458)
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I'm I'm ninety-four percent sure that was my first show. but aside from that, but yeah, getting to take my daughter to to shows and get letting letting her experience the music that I'm currently in love with and I get to share that with her and then you know, like like I played I played rose colored for for her and she was like, This is good. She's like, Who's this? I'm like, Blackhat here, put put it in the playlist. So it's really cool to like kind of

Seth Walker (10:19.635)
Right.

RYAN RAYLE (10:32.858)
pass that along. I mean, her favorites right now, which make total sense to a 13 year old girl, is is colorblind and catch your breath and of of virtue and and and I'm like it's just it's so interesting to to like, you know, I'll see the I'll see the boys out you know, just doing their thing. And it's like I remember I remember talking to Teddy and Josh from Catch Your Breath when it was almost just like a bedroom project back in like

Seth Walker (10:34.42)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (10:40.934)
yeah.

And it's cool because we know those guys too.

Seth Walker (10:54.601)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (11:02.576)
Twenty seventeen or something.

Seth Walker (11:04.039)
Yeah, we did a battle of the bands, or not us, but my old band Rain Check did a battle of the bands with them to come and take it. Yeah, it was like battle to get on, battle to get on South by So What or some shit. And we got like, they won first place, I think we won third place. We just won, we won, we got offered a show for with Scary Kids, Scaring Kids, we just, we just took that. But I think that's when I met Colorblind too.

RYAN RAYLE (11:10.404)
Really?

RYAN RAYLE (11:17.36)
RYAN RAYLE (11:28.292)
Brother s scary kids. Love that band.

Yeah, that's just it's just it's neat. I know that all like Austin is this hotbed, but I mean Texas as a whole, I mean San Antonio, San Marcus, Houston, RGV, Denton, hell, even even Colleen and Belton have got some secret weapons. And Yeah, I mean yeah Cloud Anchor's also from up around that way. So it's it's really cool to kind of just see everybody

Seth Walker (11:42.343)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (11:51.441)
Yep, I mean that's where my guys live.

Seth Walker (11:58.056)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (12:03.246)
grow and thrive and and and just you know continue spreading you know the art that you guys create. What what do you guys what do you guys plan on doing for the show? Guys got anything up your actually you know what? Don't give away the surprise if you do. he's like foam party bitch. Please no confetti. They will they will

Seth Walker (12:08.956)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (12:20.688)
Yeah, I've got some tricks up my sleeve, I think.

Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (12:29.934)
charge everybody like two hundred dollars each if there's confetti. Ca it's such a mess. I think there was I forget what band it was, but it was stuck in the fans for like months before they got it all out. But so what's what's black hat got on the calendar between now and December fifth? any shows? Any new music?

Seth Walker (12:32.796)
Yeah, fuck that.

Seth Walker (12:51.116)
We are playing, we're playing next Saturday at the elbow room on the 10th with Viltreus and some other good, some other fucking dope ass bands. And then the next week, I think the 18th, we're playing at the rock box again for Loud and Local 2. Yeah, they wanted us back for the second one. So I'm like, fuck yeah. That's, that's, we've had a really good crowd at the rock box the first time that we played there. So it, you know, that's, it's cool to be back.

RYAN RAYLE (13:07.566)
Nice, nice.

RYAN RAYLE (13:12.207)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (13:21.188)
I told them that I was gonna claw my way through this fucking scene, so, and finally we're playing it fucking rock box and shit, you know.

RYAN RAYLE (13:28.344)
Yeah, no, it's it's Rockbox is one of those venues. It it's it's it's just it's like the it's one of the places, you know, it's kinda like the Mohawk or the come and take it down there. Cause I mean, to be honest, San Antonio doesn't have that many venues to choose from.

Seth Walker (13:39.439)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (13:47.513)
Nah, after White Rabbit, after, you know, the White Rabbit days, right now, it's just, it's really just vibes. Vibes Rockbox. And I mean, Elbow Room, have, I mean, we have it, whoever will play there, you know, we don't have the best, it's not the best system there, but it does the fucking job. Like Left 4 Dead played my birthday show and it fucking, it was a sick-ass show, you know? But,

RYAN RAYLE (13:50.734)
Yep.

RYAN RAYLE (14:10.884)
Ugh.

It probably tore probably tore that place up.

Seth Walker (14:16.618)
It fucking did. It was packed place, But there's not there. There aren't a whole lot of places to play here in San Antonio anymore. But so it's I mean, and vibes is a super pinnacle spot, especially for the new scene, these new kids like. So I'm glad that we could get in there and kind of rattle the cage a little bit like, hey, we're here.

RYAN RAYLE (14:17.776)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (14:41.178)
Yeah. Hi, Black Hat's here. Get ready to strap on some party pants.

Seth Walker (14:43.768)
Yeah, yeah.

Exactly.

RYAN RAYLE (14:48.174)
You guys you guys got any plans to venture outside of the state ever?

Seth Walker (14:55.289)
yeah. yeah. I really want to. mean, money, money. That's when money, you know, becomes partially an obstacle. But, I want to plant the seed wherever the fuck that wherever, wherever we can right now. I want to get into, I want to get, get into Dallas and Houston area. And then after that, I'd like to expand outside of Texas. like some Alabama, you know, I like there there's a

RYAN RAYLE (15:01.646)
Of course.

RYAN RAYLE (15:15.077)
Yep.

RYAN RAYLE (15:22.978)
Mm-hmm.

Seth Walker (15:25.974)
I want to shoot a Lawnshare Youth video over there in Birmingham, that's money too. Lawnshare Youth, yeah, it's a YouTube channel that fucking exposes a bunch of bands, know what I puts bands on, it gives bands a lot of exposure. It's just they record a song. Yeah, it's all black and white, that's it. LCY.

RYAN RAYLE (15:31.889)
I'm sorry, a what? A lawn chair?

RYAN RAYLE (15:43.049)
I'm gonna look this up.

Is it the w is it the all black and white?

I r yep, I remember heavy hitters going through there and pretty much

Seth Walker (15:54.091)
Yes, that goes a bit. Because before Heavy Hitter really hit it big, I was talking to Austin, the vocalist for a while about LCY. And he's like, dude, this is the way to go.

RYAN RAYLE (16:07.281)
It's crazy how one music video can just turn turn a whole cycle around for a band. You know what I mean?

Seth Walker (16:10.869)
Yeah.

And LCY does that for me. I feel like they make it that much easier for people to, for them to produce that fucking video for the masses.

RYAN RAYLE (16:25.445)
Yeah, 'cause it 'cause it's basically you just I mean, obviously you coordinate with the studio and it's just a one it's just a one day just a one yeah, right? Like d is if I remember correctly, it's pretty much if you can get it in one take, like that's it. There's no there's no let's go back and fix this. It's like nah, just straight shot.

Seth Walker (16:30.577)
Right. One and done.

Seth Walker (16:39.521)
Yeah.

Yeah. It's all one take. I think he said that, and it might've changed cause I'm sure he's, I'm sure business has picked up, but, it used to be, you would get the video back the same day. Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (16:51.023)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (16:56.249)
What? Holy cow. That is crazy turnaround time.

Seth Walker (16:59.67)
crazy. Now, I reckon the dude's fucking hella busy all the time.

RYAN RAYLE (17:04.401)
Yeah. I wonder if I've always I've always thought about something like that. Like I remember I wanted to I wanted to work with a guy in Georgetown called the Noise Factory, where we started out doing local bands. but again it just came down to money. Like I understand it takes a lot to run a place like that and not every local band has money the way that some bands do. but but yeah, I really that's it yeah, I that I'm happy that that there is a thing

Seth Walker (17:16.203)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (17:23.392)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (17:26.89)
Fuck no.

RYAN RAYLE (17:34.863)
like that that exists. So if you are if you are on tour, like knowing a South Run, you could even like time it like, okay, that's our day off and we're gonna shoot this video and then we're gonna keep going. Man, that'd be cool. what about what about new music? We got any new music in the pipeline?

Seth Walker (17:43.658)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (17:51.397)
We've got, we have tons, but I'm going to be honest, they're waiting on me to write for it.

RYAN RAYLE (17:57.074)
So are you writing or so yeah, what's your role? Are you lyrics only? Do you help format the the structure?

Seth Walker (18:06.473)
Basically the way that we write right now is that Brandon has had, Brandon our guitar player, he's the OG of the band. I call him the Kanye of the band, because he's got all of this shit written for like fucking.

RYAN RAYLE (18:15.023)
Okay.

Seth Walker (18:22.152)
damn since like 2020 probably. So when I joined the band, he's like, I've got a catalog of fucking songs that are ready to go. He just picked and choose which ones went with the first, you know, which ones went with the first record. And we wrote you those. So right now they're all just, Brett, they're in the studio with Brett a lot. And it's really just Brandon and Diego will go over there and put down some fucking guitar tracks and bass tracks.

RYAN RAYLE (18:24.305)
Wow.

Seth Walker (18:51.636)
Brett, Brett Watson is like the silent member of the band. He's such a great producer. So they're always with him. He's always there. They're always doing something new, working on new shit. So, yeah, right now it's just I'm in the process of writing lyrics for like 10 fucking songs.

RYAN RAYLE (19:11.665)
Whenever you write in your lyrics, I know that obviously being the vocalist, you have your own interpretations and and sometimes the vocalist is the sole writer of the lyrics, no other input. do that does does the band bring you like obviously, like you said, Brandon had a catalog full of stuff. Do they ever give you any guidance? Do you guys ever talk about it? Like, hey, I I'm thinking this, like, is there is there room for movement on on the lyrics whenever you write or is like

This is from okay.

Seth Walker (19:40.87)
yeah. I mean, that's why I wanted to, that's why I started being in bands in the first place, because I wanted other minds to work with, know what mean? Other, like kind of a nudge, like, hey Seth, try this, you know, like something to expand my horizons. But yeah, Brandon, I think Brandon wrote most of the lyrics for our song, Bad Part of the Bad Dream. He already had those lyrics down. I was like, shit, I just changed a couple of things, changed the melodies. But,

RYAN RAYLE (19:53.594)
Right.

Seth Walker (20:09.746)
We're pretty open. We receive and give each other input.

RYAN RAYLE (20:17.765)
Whenever it comes to like the arrangements, obviously do you do you do anything other than do you play any instrument?

Seth Walker (20:18.034)
20.

Seth Walker (20:25.961)
I'm about to start playing guitar with Brandon. So yeah, cause we're about to start, a spoiler. We're about to start covering. We cover Kim Dracula from deaf tones right now. That's about to change to hole in the earth. So, I don't know if, I don't know if by December I'll be doing it, but, at some point.

RYAN RAYLE (20:30.063)
I've been saying that for years. I really hope you beat me to the punch.

RYAN RAYLE (20:45.731)
Ooh, man.

RYAN RAYLE (20:54.02)
No pressure.

Seth Walker (20:55.715)
I'm gonna be playing guitar for Hole in the Earth and like three of the new songs, you I like the option to pick up and set down the fucking guitar so I can run around, you know.

RYAN RAYLE (21:08.157)
yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I mean th the it a live show is a live show and for all the live shows that I've been to, whenever the the song the music could actually be just kind of mid, but if the action on the stage is, you know, above par, it's almost like you don't even you don't even worry about the out of tune guitar. These guys are up there fucking ripping it apart. what's what's something

Seth Walker (21:33.242)
Yeah.

You're just in the zone.

RYAN RAYLE (21:37.219)
Yeah, exactly. You're you're just you're just there to have a good time. What's do you guys do do you guys have a light show or anything or just leave it up to the house?

Seth Walker (21:47.214)
No, we don't. That's definitely something that we'll probably invest in. Our base player is in Cloud Anchor too. So they're like our sister band. So I think both bands, been slowly, like we just upgraded to IE, to in-ear monitors. And I think slowly we'll upgrade to maybe a light system too. Luckily, Come and Take it do that fucking great.

RYAN RAYLE (21:56.336)
Right.

RYAN RAYLE (22:12.011)
dude, my boy Taylor. I was actually talking to him I was I was I was talking to him last night. They're him and Anthony are at Aftershock right now in in I think Sacramento. And I called Anthony and he's like, Hey boy, you been drinking? I'm like, Yes, I have. I was You been drinking? Like, yes I have. And then you hear Taylor in the background, he's like, Me too. And and we were talking about lights and and I was like, I only know four buttons. And Taylor's like, Yeah, that's all I know too. And but I mean

Seth Walker (22:14.383)
I know. K was a fucking mess.

Seth Walker (22:21.945)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (22:42.013)
Sitting there watching him work the the light the lightboard is it's just it's a he's a fucking wizard. And then he and then he's also running audio. I mean, that dude is a monster when it comes to

Seth Walker (22:53.378)
Yeah, he's absolutely killer at fucking, at running that soundboard too.

RYAN RAYLE (22:57.689)
Yeah, I mean, there's there's obviously everybody has their critiques, you know, this could sound better, that could sound but at the same time, it's like you got one guy that can mix countless bands from countless sounds and it all like sounds good. It's it's not I mean, he'll he'll even look at me, like especially whenever some bands have the just really hot snares. He'll just he he's got the he's got the snare bomb button and anytime I'm up there, any like just kind of checking out

Seth Walker (23:08.035)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (23:12.536)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (23:23.65)
He he he he.

RYAN RAYLE (23:26.913)
just the show or whatever. He'll like we'll look we'll like we'll look at each other and then he's just got his finger on the trigger and I'm like, Yeah, do it, buddy. Do it. And it's just snare bombs and blinder lights. I those are those those are my shit. Like if I'm in this if I'm in the crowd, I want to get hit in the chest with a snare bomb and I want to be blinded. I want to be blinded and then come back to reality and there's the show.

Seth Walker (23:35.202)
Bing.

What?

Seth Walker (23:42.934)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (23:48.768)
bass. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Seth Walker (23:56.15)
That's cool. I didn't know he had a fucking snare bomb. They had a snare bomb and fucking snare bomb button it come and take it

RYAN RAYLE (24:02.458)
Yeah, it it it's a thing. You should talk to them about it. Actually, I'll make I'll I'll just I'll make sure it's like everybody's gonna get a snare bomb. One bomb per band. whoo, brother, I am so excited for this show. I, you know, for for those that don't know, again, December 5th, come and take it live. It's the ATX podcast ATX Metal Podcast Showcase. and the reason that I throw these is

Seth Walker (24:05.75)
Fuck yeah. Yeah. Fuck yeah.

Seth Walker (24:14.358)
Fuck yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (24:30.411)
I find bands that I feel like need to be kind of elevated a little bit just because of the way the music sounds, the hustle of the band, the the grind that you guys have been on. and it's and it's a mixed genre bill. So we've got Know Suffer at the top, we've got you guys kicking it off, and everything in between is metalcore. I mean cloud anchor. It I I forget what they called their sound.

God, that was like 20 minutes ago. But anyway, they just w they were they just played with Fly Leaf. yeah, yeah, not one. Two shows. And we were talking about, you know, the on-stage picture where you turn around and the fans are all back here. it's it's really cool to see like small town, I mean, you know, hometown local guys getting to do stuff like that. who would who would Black Hat want to play with?

Seth Walker (25:05.769)
Yeah, two shows with five, two sold out shows.

Seth Walker (25:16.127)
fucking cool

Seth Walker (25:27.595)
Thornhill. That's it. That's a given.

RYAN RAYLE (25:29.285)
He he didn't even like no s no hesitate, Thornhill. Thornhill. Thornhill, if you're listening, I'ma tag them. I'ma tag him in the post. Be like, look.

Seth Walker (25:40.062)
Dude, to be honest, when I found Thornhill, that kind of... My guitarist, Brandon, put me onto Thornhill. I don't know who the fuck they were. I think I was getting strings for my bass six. Because, you know, I bought a bass six because we planned to like use that because Lowe uses a six string bass as a guitar, you know, for in some of the records. And we were going to do that. But anyway, he was telling me to get some fucking string joy strings. And he said Thornhill uses them, Lowe uses them, this band. I'm like, who the fuck is Thornhill? But...

At that time, like I said, was struggling to find a graceful transition from shoegaze emo shit to metal. And once I found Thornhill, that eliminated my writer's block. And I said, cool, this dude's not afraid to take risks. And he fucking belts it out or sings it out. I said, so cool, fuck it, I'm going to do the same shit. And they quickly become one of my favorite bands. But Thornhill, Loath, we would

blend on a build together perfectly, I think.

RYAN RAYLE (26:41.253)
No, I love I love me some loath. I remember kind of the same story. We were just cruising one day and it was just kind of algorithmically showed up. I guess, I guess the the internet wanted me to know who Thornhill who lo who Loth was, and I was like, Daddy can fuck with this. yeah. Yeah, they've got some heavy stuff. But man, I'm so excited. I I it it it I'm now to the point.

Seth Walker (26:54.749)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (26:59.697)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (27:09.325)
where when I go to build the show, I actually have to like tell people like, look, I'm sorry, I'm I've already got the lineup set. Or you know, I'll keep you as like a backup to where before I used to like, man, I'm I look at some of these I look at some of these show flyers and it's just like how the fuck did I pull that off? Right? Like how did I do that? Like the the the Browning one where I had thirteen bands,

Seth Walker (27:18.108)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (27:37.083)
shit, the bre- yeah, fuck yeah, dude.

RYAN RAYLE (27:38.82)
I had I had Darkness Divided as my last one. I mean there's just there's so much history on this wall that I love, you know, I love that we, you know, get to keep doing this, Seth. Got gas in the tank, still going, man. But I don't want to keep up too I don't want to take take up too much more of your time. where can everybody follow you guys and and give you support? What are what are the socials or the website links?

Seth Walker (27:49.991)
Yeah, no shit,

Seth Walker (28:06.554)
Blackhat.TX is our Instagram. Go follow and you can find us on Facebook too, but Instagram is the best. Instagram is the best for engagement. And then stream, obviously go stream our shit. You can also find us on TikTok too, same tag. Yeah, we're lacking in followers, so fucking pack that shit up. We're still fairly new.

RYAN RAYLE (28:09.969)
Gotcha.

RYAN RAYLE (28:18.03)
yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (28:28.658)
There's your marching orders, people. Go file go f go find and then just go click and it's that easy. It's that easy.

Seth Walker (28:37.528)
Yeah, we have one music video out.

RYAN RAYLE (28:41.369)
yeah? That's it? Wow, I I couldn't

Seth Walker (28:42.394)
Yeah, yeah, only one. no, guess we have two. I guess we have two. I've got a live performance video too with the track dubbed on it and then we have our official music video for Are You Even Real?

RYAN RAYLE (28:58.448)
That's the other thing. I forgot to mention that to Cloud Anchor, but I'm also going to have cameras set up. So we're gonna record I'm either gonna record one song from each band or I'm gonna record every set for every band. Yeah. I think I think I'm just gonna go with the everything. I'm not here to I went digging in my I went digging in my box of of SD cards. Brother, I've pff I forgot that I had like the secret the secret weapons. These are like

Seth Walker (29:11.62)
Everything, right.

Seth Walker (29:21.562)
SD cards.

Seth Walker (29:27.91)
Not yet.

RYAN RAYLE (29:28.002)
half like half terabyte. I mean this is like five twelve gigs. And then I also found this other one that it's I remember when I got this one, I was so excited it was two gigs. I was like, dude, I was like, fuck yeah, I got two gigs. Yeah, man. Now it's like transistors this on the atomic level are being

Seth Walker (29:41.483)
yeah. This is so much on this little fucking thing.

Seth Walker (29:50.468)
Two gigs goes like that now. Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (29:54.363)
Yeah, I mean I've already run through two gigs in two minutes just recording this thing. But but man, Seth, I'm first and foremost, I wanted to say thank you and and the rest of the guys for for joining us on the showcase. keep making your art and I'm gonna keep helping you share it. I I think I think this is gonna be a real fun one. Can't wait to share the flyer with everybody and the full lineup and everything that we're gonna do. like I said, we got the raffles, we got the giveaways, we got the happy meals.

Seth Walker (30:11.868)
yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (30:24.348)
We got great bands. is there anybody, I always give the floor to the to the guest when we leave. Is there anybody that you want to give any special thanks or shout outs to?

Seth Walker (30:36.484)
Damn.

RYAN RAYLE (30:40.006)
He's like Mom

Seth Walker (30:40.173)
Probably Jamal. Jamal for fucking linking us up. I don't know, anybody who's giving us the fucking time of day to be honest. There's a lot of people asleep on us being a new band and shit and then some people don't. Brett, Jamal, and anybody who's not sleeping on us right now.

RYAN RAYLE (30:57.988)
side note, who are the rest of the black hat members and what did they do? I knew I forgot something.

Seth Walker (31:01.314)
Okay, it's me vocals Brandon, Brandon Romero is the guitar player aka the fucking Kanye of the band Yoshi is our drummer and Diego is our bass player. just added Diego to our arsenal Our old bass player stepped down and Diego's wanted to be in the band since

RYAN RAYLE (31:24.559)
nice.

Okay.

Seth Walker (31:31.082)
We started, since we made a Facebook, I remember him messaging me asking if we had a bass player, but Diego also plays for Cloud Anchor. And he's a fucking team player. He's invested a lot into the band already.

RYAN RAYLE (31:45.019)
Yeah, man, it's almost like small world. I always say that drummers have three projects, bassists have two, vocalists, it's hard it's hard stretch to go to multiple bands. But but yeah, man, I'm I'm super stoked. I I'm really, really happy about this. I'm actually just talking with Anthony right now 'cause we haven't like officially officially announced. and I think that's coming this w well by the time this is by the time this is out it'll it'll have been announced.

Seth Walker (32:05.569)
Yeah.

the tent.

RYAN RAYLE (32:13.936)
But yeah, dude, this this show flyer is fucking sexy. Can't wait for people to see it. I'm also going to unveil the Texas Takeover logo. I had it officially built, paid for by prof the guy that actually did Come and Take It's and the guy that did No Control Radio. So it's all kind of like it's all kind of full circle that that was the guy that did the logo and I'm gonna try and get one of them backdrop banners.

Seth Walker (32:36.801)
Yeah.

RYAN RAYLE (32:43.538)
'Cause essentially essentially the Texas takeover is going to be the sponsor of the ATX Metal Podcast showcase, even though the Texas takeover is under the umbrella of the podcast. It's really no, it doesn't care. It's my show. I get to do what I want.

Seth Walker (32:43.691)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (32:54.091)
Right. Yeah. My fucking joke.

RYAN RAYLE (32:58.628)
Yeah, sponsored by I don't know honeynut Cheerios and Tacos. So yeah. Brought to you by Pepsi. but anyway, Seth, greatly appreciate it. Tell the guys that from me to them, thank you very much. There's anything that you guys need from me between now and then, just let me know. But this is also gonna show before you guys go on, like we said again, all the bands are gonna have little clips.

Seth Walker (33:01.184)
Sponsored by whoever the fuck I want to sponsor it.

Seth Walker (33:15.753)
I will.

RYAN RAYLE (33:27.132)
played before so we can, you know, have a little bit more fun and, you know, instead of standing there waiting for the next band to play, you can stand there and watch us talk to the band that's about to play. So I'm pretty pumped. I think that's gonna be the first time it's ever been done there. So if it sticks, it sticks and we're gonna keep doing it. But

Seth Walker (33:27.935)
Hell yeah.

Seth Walker (33:38.399)
Fuck yeah.

Seth Walker (33:43.807)
I think it was sick. I'm stoked as fuck to play with slow pulse and Fervence I've been friends with Brooke. I've been friends with Brooke for a while. So when I saw that I just, dude, when you sent me the lineup, it just came up really quick and I just saw slow pulse and Fervence And I said, that's my girls, we're playing it.

RYAN RAYLE (33:47.622)
Brother

RYAN RAYLE (33:56.818)
Dude, they are dude, Slowpulse has some new shit coming out. Fervence, with Metal Blade. I mean, it's it's it's I I feel like I am in such a cool place in this massive town that we call the live capital nation. Live music live music capital of the world. God always fuck it up. It doesn't matter. I'll just edit it out. No, I won't. Keep it in. But

Seth Walker (34:04.531)
Yeah.

Seth Walker (34:16.553)
capital, live music capital of the world.

RYAN RAYLE (34:24.987)

Seth Walker (34:49.117)
