Shalom and welcome, dear listeners. Today, let's delve into the world of Talmud, a cornerstone of Jewish wisdom. A profound teaching comes to us from Tractate Shabbat, 127a, where it is said: "Hospitality to wayfarers is greater than welcoming the Divine Presence." A startling statement, isn't it? What could be greater than welcoming the Divine Presence?
Yet, the Talmud teaches us so. It tells us that caring for others by extending our homes and hearts to them is of supreme value, even superior to a direct encounter with the Divine. Why? Because, in showing hospitality, we mimic God's own kindness, His provision for all His creatures. We become channels of divine love, thereby bringing the Divine Presence into our homes and lives in a most tangible way.
So, my dear listeners, the next time you have the opportunity to welcome a guest into your home, remember this teaching from the Talmud. Know that with every act of kindness you show, every morsel of food you share, every comforting word you offer, you are not only serving your guest but also welcoming the Divine Presence, in a way even greater than if you were to encounter God directly.
