Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing calls to defend Christian freedoms, amid warnings that existing and proposed laws are shrinking the space for public expression of religious belief. Ciarán Kelly, director of The Christian Institute, writing in Spiked, says "Christians are increasingly finding themselves on the wrong side of existing or proposed laws that threaten the public expression of their beliefs." He points to abortion clinic buffer zone laws — including the conviction of a retired Northern Ireland pastor for an open-air sermon that never mentioned abortion — and to Police Service of Northern Ireland guidance suggesting hospital chaplains openly carrying Bibles could fall foul of the rules. "A hospital chaplain comforting grieving parents with scriptural verses after the loss of a child could find himself subject to police scrutiny," Kelly writes. Christian groups and the Free Speech Union also warn a proposed conversion therapy ban could criminalize praying pastors and parents. Burnham, raised Catholic, inherited the situation, but Kelly calls it a "defining test" of his government.

North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards is ending his reelection campaign after the bipartisan House Ethics Committee recommended he be censured. The 65-year-old Republican announced the decision in an early-morning post on X, writing, "After much prayer and reflection, I've decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life." A 25-page committee report found "substantial reason to believe Representative Edwards violated House Rules related to sexual harassment and hostile workplaces," citing "persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers" in their twenties — including lavish gifts, comments about their appearance, and invitations to intimate dinners and vacations. Investigators found no sexual activity, but said Edwards was "at minimum blind" to the impact of his behavior. He's the first House member recommended for censure since 2010. Edwards represents the 11th district, previously held by scandal-plagued former Congressman Madison Cawthorn.

A Minnesota man has been found liable in a civil case for stealing nearly $150,000 from the church he once served. Ellis Thompson was treasurer of the Church of Christ in Duluth from February 2022 to August 2023, when the congregation discovered $148,282 missing from its bank account. According to the lawsuit, Thompson wrote "unapproved checks" of more than $2,000 to multiple people, including himself, and also withdrew funds from ATMs. He reportedly confessed in August 2023 and pledged to repay the money, but had returned only $716 before the church sued in June. Church leaders said, "The Duluth church of Christ takes the fiduciary responsibility for the monies given to it very seriously," adding they're working "amicably" with Thompson, who has accepted responsibility. A 2017 Lifeway Research study found nearly one in ten Protestant pastors reported embezzlement at their church.

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville is threatening to walk away from his own party if left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker gains real influence within it. Speaking on Fox News' "The Sunday Briefing," Carville said, "To talk about the larger Democratic Party, post the election in Michigan going forward, I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker," adding that if Piker becomes a force, "I'm out of here." He pointed to the Democratic Socialists of America platform and its talk of seizing the means of production. Piker's uncle, "The Young Turks" host Cenk Uygur, fired back on X: "Good, leave. No one will miss you," calling Carville a hypocrite. Piker has drawn criticism for calling communism socialism's "honorable end goal," comparing it to the moneyless world of "Star Trek." Bill Maher has issued similar warnings about rising communist sympathies among young Democrats.

Compassion International is urging churches across Africa to get ready now for what forecasters warn could be one of the strongest El Niño events on record, expected to peak from October. Faith Magadi, the organization's Senior Manager for Disaster Response, says "preparation cannot wait for the rains," advising the 8,000 partner churches in 29 African countries to build ties with police, chiefs, the Red Cross and government agencies before disaster strikes, not during. NOAA puts the chance of a "very strong" event at 63 percent. Magadi flags Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda, plus Ghana, Togo and Burkina Faso, where deadly flooding already killed dozens in Accra. She warns flooding "is compounding on top of poverty," turning short crises into protracted ones — noting every preparedness dollar saves about seven in response.

Progressive Democrats notched major wins in Michigan's primaries Tuesday, with the midterm elections now less than three months away. Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Congresswoman Haley Stevens, taking 48.5% to her 47.5% with more than 95% of the vote counted, despite being outspent roughly nine-to-one and facing nearly $65 million in outside spending, including more than $30 million from AIPAC's United Democracy Project. Stevens conceded, saying, "I want to congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate... That is why we have primaries." Backed by Bernie Sanders and members of "the Squad," El-Sayed supports Medicare for All, abolishing ICE and tuition-free college. He'll face Republican Mike Rogers, who leads narrowly in polling averages. Progressives Donavan McKinney and William Lawrence also won their House primaries.

Walden Media is marking the 20th anniversary of "Amazing Grace," the 2006 film chronicling William Wilberforce's decades-long fight to abolish the British slave trade — and one of its producers hopes a new generation will take up the cause. Pastor and author Bob Beltz, an associate producer on the film, says many young Christians "have never heard the story," adding, "It's so relevant that I think people will be watching this for years to come. Our hope is that it's an inspiration and an encouragement to people to get engaged." The film, starring Ioan Gruffudd, streams exclusively on Angel Studios through October 31, with digital rental and a DVD release planned. Beltz noted Wilberforce, urged by John Newton to stay in politics, endured 20 years of defeats before Parliament's 1807 abolition vote: "This isn't a picnic. This is a battle."
