Welcome to the Know the Difference Minute for Tuesday, December 27th.
If misery loves company, there was plenty to go around at airports across the country.
Through Sunday, about half of US-based airline flights were an average of 81 minutes late. Tens of thousands of flights were cancelled including Delta, American, JetBlue and Alaska, but Southwest had it the worst and is still cancelling flights. 70% of its schedule yesterday. Today, 63%.
Bad bounce of the ball for a good airline. Way more than just weather. Fueling issues. Website fails. De-icing issues. And crews who couldn’t get to where they needed to be.
This will hit their bottom line. In 2021, a bad 4-day stretch cost them $75 million. This will hurt too, but with most airlines projecting strong 2023’s, it might be forgotten as quickly as that weird sweater you’re about to return.
