Getting Real with Réal is a faith-based Christian podcast about discipline, purpose, mental toughness, addiction recovery, health, leadership, and real-life transformation. Real conversations. Biblical truth. Practical action to help you become who God created you to be.
Who would you be without it?
Carl Spellman:Well, so I've this is a great topic because it's it's I've I was having this conversation with myself the last few day for the last three days, I've been, you know, in and out of depression, in and out of feeling good about myself. The thoughts are different, the way I speak. I don't wanna interact with people the same. So I'm definitely a different person, but I can't rely on it too much is what I'm realizing is that my identity can't be on. I I have to train, and then I'm I'm a good person.
Carl Spellman:And, yeah, I'm realizing definitely that I need to be a better person without training. I need to be able to still live in God's word, still show up for myself without being able to move my body because, you know, one day it can be taken away from you, then you've gotta be ready for that.
MC:Five four three two one. Welcome to the Getting Real with Real podcast, where we get raw, real, and brutally transparent so you can be the best version of you. Make sure you subscribe so you never miss an episode. Now let's kick it off with your host, Real Andrews, aka coach.
Real Andrews:54321. Bull. What's up, champions? Coach Real here with Getting Real with Real, where we get raw, real, and really transparent so we can have the beat. You can be the best version of yourself.
Real Andrews:I have a very special guest coming all the way from The UK, Carl Spellman, and I'm excited about this podcast. I've been wanting to do this for a while. So, Carl, how are you, buddy?
Carl Spellman:I'm good. Good. Finally finally getting on now to get to speak to you, and we've been talking about this for a while, haven't we? So
Real Andrews:it's good to
Carl Spellman:finally get going and, you know, see you on screen and actually speak properly for the first time. So it's good.
Real Andrews:Yeah. Well, you're not just kicking my butt on the on the workout.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. We're not sweating now. We're chilling out, so it's good to be able to talk.
Real Andrews:What part of the country you're in right now?
Carl Spellman:I'm in Liverpool now. I'm in Liverpool in England. Okay. So, obviously, I lived in Dubai for the year when I set up the Stretfast over there. And then now I'm back in The UK.
Carl Spellman:So it's, yeah, it's good to be on home soil again.
Real Andrews:Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So, Carl, let's just jump right in. So what was the moment you stopped being in shape and became someone who trains other people's bodies for a living?
Carl Spellman:The moment was when it began, do you mean?
Real Andrews:Yeah.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. So the first sort of time that I, you know, got involved with Strepfast was after football. So I was a professional footballer or soccer player, as I know that you'd call it. I was professional and signed, and then I got released. And then I didn't really know what to do with me.
Carl Spellman:Life and me whole, you know, younger years was based around being a footballer and having this identity. And, you know, from four years of age to twenty twenty years of age, that was all that I knew. That was all that I focused on. That's all that mattered. And then once that stopped, and I I finished football, then I found Shredfast about a year or two later and sort of never looked back.
Carl Spellman:I never really wanted to be a coach to start. I never it was not something that, you know, was my biggest goal was to was to, you know, be the best coach or anything like that. It was just sort of find a purpose, when football finished and find something that, you know, made me feel good, made other people feel good, be in
Real Andrews:a
Carl Spellman:community. So, yeah, it was about 2022 when I first started Shredfast, walked into the class, and then never looked back since. I I did the classes for about a year, became a coach, became a athlete, you know, and, you know, it brings us here. Now I'm, you know, traveling the world with Shredfast and doing all these crazy things, making people feel good, making myself feel good. So, you know, very grateful for what's going on right now.
Real Andrews:You know, yeah, and you're doing an awesome you know, it's interesting, Carl, because I know we're both men of faith, and I apologize. Yeah. I I don't know what happened because I always open up my podcast. So let's just take a step back and and pray. So thank you, father, for this day.
Real Andrews:It's not our day. It's your day. Have your will. Have your way. Let our thoughts be your thoughts.
Real Andrews:Our words be your words, and our actions be your actions, father. And holy spirit, give us the words to say and bring the people to that need to hear what they need to hear and get from this podcast what they need to get in Jesus name. He said, Amen. Amen. You know, as you remind me, you know, you all you knew all you wanted to be was a player from four to 20 and you never had no desire to be a coach and you know, as you're sharing that with me, you know, it reminds me, you know, god positions us to be in position, to be in position, you know, after four fourteen and you know, I was, you know, I'm 63 and my dream always well, it wasn't my dream actually what became because my dream was actually to be an athlete.
Real Andrews:And then I ended up I ended up as an actor. I started as a stuntman. Once that happened, my dream was, you know, to become the most successful actor to win an Emmy to I envisioned being a motivational speaker, being on stage and and all of that. And that's all I did for years, you know, you know, and then all of a sudden, find myself in ministry. So it is kinda it makes me think the same thing, you know, God.
Real Andrews:Yeah. He knows he's got that plan. So all those skills you had is a as a professional athlete, a soccer player, you can certainly now put into what you do as coaching with Shredfast. Right?
Carl Spellman:Exactly. So, you know, like you've just said, then his his plans are greater. You have these plans when you're young, and, you know, this is what you see, and this is all the glitz and the glamour of being this athlete and, you know, the things of the world, really, which, you know, when once you find God, you understand that this is all temporary. Mhmm. You know, there's there's a much bigger purpose.
Carl Spellman:And the thing there's things that we need to be doing each day to, you know, fulfill his word and and live in his word. And, you know, when it was just me being obsessed with football, it was just all about me, to be honest. It was just all about, you know, what I I need to do this. I need to make this amount of money. I need to, you know, focus on me, me, me.
Carl Spellman:Where when you understand when God came into the picture in my life, everything changed, and it it's not about self no more, and it's about others and giving back. And, you know, good things come to you because of that. That just comes as a as a byproduct. You know, your life gets better if you follow the word, you live in the word, and you help other people, and you don't put yourself first, you put the put the Lord first, and that's what changed my whole life.
Real Andrews:Yeah. And, you know, it's it it like, one time a friend of mine said to me one day was was a change changing moment for me, kinda what you were just saying, Carl. He said, he he was a he owned this gym. I was working in this gym. He was also a big time newscaster out here on ABC.
Real Andrews:One day I was setting up my stuff in his gym. And he said to me, he comes in and he said, Real, you know, he said, none of this matters. Right? And I was like, yeah. But I didn't really get what he meant.
Real Andrews:He said, you know, at the at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how many souls we bring home at the end of the day, how many souls we bring home. So do you find, like because you're now on a huge platform, right, with shred fast. Shred fast is definitely in my opinion, and you guys speak it all the time. It's not surprising. It's the number one workout in the world.
Real Andrews:And, you know, I mean, I would give props on that. So just, you know, I've been a fitness expert forty something years built for gyms. Yeah, and I've never seen anything like the stretch fast. So if you're if you're watching this, you don't know what we're talking about. You know, we'll put the links in there.
Real Andrews:You could get three free thirty minute workout connect with Carl, get training, connect with me, but it is like to this day, Carl, it's like
Carl Spellman:Yeah.
Real Andrews:That unless we're doing the standard workouts, which we do every now and then to check, you know, how we're doing. Yeah. It's like, bro, I've been doing this, like, a a while now, and no workout ever repeats. And I'm always getting my butt kicked. It's like it's like it's like it's it's there's nothing
Carl Spellman:bro. Honestly, you get like you get you you get better, but because you're getting better, you end up lifting heavier weights or you end up pushing a bit harder. So there's never a workout where you feel like, oh, yeah. I'm I'm I'm I'm good now. Like, you're always getting your bucket, like you said, and you're always gonna be humbled, which is exactly what we wanna be doing.
Carl Spellman:That's what we wanna be doing every day. It's a reminder that, you know, we you know, the ego gets gets shut down because it's so tough, the work that we do.
Real Andrews:Yeah. And, you know, I I wanted to say, you know, Holy Spirit's working. I haven't even got to my questions on the sheet yet. You know, I I transparency and anybody watching this, I believe thank you, Holy Spirit. Some people need to hear this because when you watch the shred fast, come across a shred fast workout.
Real Andrews:If you don't know what it is, I think a lot not I think I'm pretty sure a lot of people get intimidated and they'd say, wow, I could never do that. Right? You know, but here's what I would say to those of you out there. See it, you need like I'm 60 three, three hip surgeries, you know, a cancer survivor, you know, you know, sober seven years, you know, whatever breaks and stuff like this, full transparency. I saw this.
Real Andrews:Said, okay, I'm in. Like it. I'm anything that challenges me. I've never had anything challenge me, you know, so I'm in, I like these guys. They're all crazy.
Real Andrews:They're sweating all over the thing. Then I saw this thing said, why don't you be an athlete? And I was like, okay, yeah, let me do that. I'm going to be an athlete. So I saw I signed up for the athlete and they were like, I remember Carl.
Real Andrews:I remember just because that's my personality and you probably get that you're the same person. I remember I can't remember exactly what it was, but I think they said something like you have to do maybe fifty hours or something and this and this. I'm thinking, I'm thinking I'm going to crush this like fifty hours, dude. I'm like, I'm, I'm going to be a shred fast athlete in thirty days, dude. I'm like, dude.
Real Andrews:So and and here here I am now several several months later. I still haven't taken my test, you know, full transparency because
Carl Spellman:Yeah.
Real Andrews:I had a lot a lot of things to, you know, like when I started Carl, my squats, I was doing modified squats because I couldn't I certainly couldn't get to 90. So I had a box behind me. I can get below 90 now. I couldn't do burpees all the way to the ground. I still can't do burpees.
Real Andrews:So obviously, I can take those tests, but what I realized in the process, it's not about speed. Then you know what? I didn't realize when I first started, I forget what it was. It was either you or Adam once said, I've been doing this for three or four years, and I was like, wow. Like, I thought I thought you guys were just, like, doing this, but I you guys took years to get to the to the level that you're at.
Carl Spellman:Exactly. So I've been involved at Chef Fast for four years now in the first year. I wouldn't even class it as being, you know, athletes or anything like that. I just used to turn up to the classes and, you know, get me booked, you say. So it was it's a lot of effort.
Carl Spellman:There's a lot of time that's gone into it. It doesn't feel as long because I've enjoyed the process. Like you said, it's not about speed. It's about doing things right and, you know, the whole journey, the process of getting there and not being good at something and then getting better. That's what Stretchfast is.
Carl Spellman:It's we always say anybody can, but, you know, there's guys in there, 300 pounds, you know, 30, like, 30 stone. You've lost 40 kilos within three months. Like, it works. You know what I mean? You put the time in, and you will reap the rewards.
Carl Spellman:And that's why Shredfast is working now. That's why, you know, we're going global, and we're getting locations all over the planet. Now we've got one in Atlanta. We've got one in Dubai. We've got one in Marbury and in Bali Bali, Warrington.
Carl Spellman:So they're all over the place now, and it it's it's because it's truth. It's because it's, you know, it's it's it actually works. If it was something that didn't work, it would fall away. But like you've just said, then it takes a long time. People, you know, might be intimidated to start.
Carl Spellman:But once you get going, you know yourself, you get through it. And even if you mightn't be able to do do burpees or do squats fully, you can still get through the workout and do it how as best as you can. You know what I mean? So it caters for all of us.
Real Andrews:Yeah. And the one thing I think what really separates the one one of the things that really separates you guys from anything else besides the fact that, like you say, it works. It's it's flat out works. Is that you guys get in the trenches with us? And, you know, you're not just on the sidelines saying, okay, go do this, Stan.
Real Andrews:It's like, you guys are in there. You love when I do the workout, I have my headphones on. I don't usually watch the video. I'm I'm listening, but just hearing you guys grunting and groaning and cheering each other on and dying. And then I I look and Luke's on his knees.
Real Andrews:He can't breathe, and you're over there. Then it's like, if you guys are gonna get in it with us, it pushes us to go. So I I you know, I but anyways.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. No. Exactly. When when you're in it with someone, it's more real. You can feel the pain.
Carl Spellman:Like, we're going through the same pain. We're going through the same suffering. And that's exactly what life's about. Is it not? Like, you know, suffering for for for a greater purpose, suffering, you know, to be close I know I, you know, keep reverting back to it, but closer to God, that that is the biggest, you know, showcase of love is suffering, you know, because that's what at the end of the day, that's what Jesus did.
Carl Spellman:And you can convert that into steadfast. You are suffering for the people around you because if you're in shape and you're fit and you're healthy, you can be a better father. You can be a better friend. You can be a better role model. You can be you know, you can speak better.
Carl Spellman:Like, everything elevates because of suffering, and, you know, I think that's why Shredfast works because it is the truth. You you put the work in, and you will reap the rewards. You'll be a better person, and you can help others by doing it too.
Real Andrews:Yeah. Truth is that keyword you there. And, you know, I do when I do my Shredfast, it's interesting. And I love how you guys related to life and you're always motivated. But I if you can imagine when you come into my gym, there's a section there and that's where I always come in.
Real Andrews:I do my workouts there. So everybody either walking past you going to the bathroom or going upstairs or whatever. And they're always like, they're always like, bro. What are you doing? What are you doing, dude?
Real Andrews:Like, like you you inspire me, man. You're like, like, like because, like, nobody's working out like that in the gym.
Carl Spellman:Nobody's training like that. Most I've real I didn't realize, obviously, because I found Shredfast as one of the first, you know, true gyms that I I I went to and loved. So I'm thinking the whole world must be training like this. The whole world's doing this. Mhmm.
Carl Spellman:And then once I started to go to other places and other gyms and, you know, everyone just lifting weights or or running or, you know, just not even sweating that much. Like, the sweat, you know, yourself, the sweat that comes out of you is insane. You sweat out of your shins, out of your arms. Like, it comes out of places you'd never think, and it's it's, you know, it's just a testament to Luke and what he's created. It's it's so different.
Carl Spellman:It's so unique. And, again, like, it's just the truth you find out a lot about yourself, don't you, when you're in them trenches?
Real Andrews:It's so crazy, man. You know, I'll tell you two things, and I wanna get on to learn some cool stuff about you. Yeah. Two things I'll tell you. I remember when I first came across these videos on Instagram, and these got Luke straight to and I was like, I like I was like, okay.
Real Andrews:Listen. I like what these guys are doing. I love the workouts, but I know the tricks. There's pouring water over themselves and then squinting it out and everything like this. Said, hey, buddy.
Real Andrews:It's okay. It's no no one to do. Yeah. And then the first day I went to the gym to do the workout, I came home. I was like, baby.
Real Andrews:Like, I said, dude, this is the real deal. This is it. No. And I was like, what the heck is going? And then my, my wife who was hardcore, this just happened the other day.
Real Andrews:And this is when I said, I just said in my head because my wife is hardcore. She's a coach too. And every time we work out together, we do resistance training together, and I'm always throwing in a kettlebell, you know, a shred fast workout in there. Yeah. And last time we went to work out, I said I said, okay, we're gonna go downstairs and do a shred fast.
Real Andrews:She goes, oh, please, really? I don't want
Carl Spellman:to be.
Real Andrews:All right. Let me let me jump in here, brother. So what what does your body actually cost you physically, mentally that people don't see behind the shred fast workouts and photos?
Carl Spellman:What does it cost me?
Real Andrews:Yeah.
Carl Spellman:You know, it's a lot of suffering. It's a lot of discipline. But it is also finances too. You've got to invest in yourself with food, you know, recovery. There's a lot that goes into it.
Carl Spellman:If you want a fit body, you've got to be putting the right nutrients in. You've got to be getting the correct recovery, sleeping well, paying for massages, saunas, ice baths. You know? If you wanna train at a it it it depends for for each and every person. But in terms of myself, I know that I I do invest a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of effort into, you know, feeling good, being in good shape so that I can be good for other people.
Carl Spellman:Because I've I've been on the other side where I haven't invested in myself. I haven't give the enough time to myself. I haven't put God first in the morning. I haven't put me work out first in the morning. And I'm two completely different people.
Carl Spellman:The the, you know, the bad comes out to me like everyone else. You're snappy. You you you can't deal with certain stressful situations. So, you know, the amount that you have to give and suffer, again, I'll use that word, is suffering. It's that that's it's how much you're willing to suffer usually dictates dictates, you know, how far you're gonna go in life, how good it's gonna get, how many people you're gonna help.
Carl Spellman:And I would just say, yeah, it costs a lot, but the cost of not doing it, the the price of not doing it is much higher than, you know, investing in yourself, showing up every day, putting the work in rather than slacking off, staying in bed, you know, not being you know, showing up for yourself each day. That's gonna cost more. So the pain the temporary pain that you you cost them now is gonna pay off later. But if you if you wanna just, you know, look for comfort, then, you know, you're gonna pay a bigger price later on. You know what I mean?
Carl Spellman:Like, look at yourself there, 63 years of age. I wouldn't never thought that in me life. You look about, you know, in your four late forties, maybe, if that. You know what I mean? You're looking in insidious shape, skins glowing, like, every you know what I'm saying?
Carl Spellman:Like, you've put time into that. It it doesn't just come doesn't come, like, naturally. You have to actually put effort in each and every day, which, you know, you're a lot more mature than me and know a lot more than me. So you've been in this industry a long time, and you'll know yourself that the more hours you put in, the better the better it gets.
Real Andrews:Well, yeah, and I love you know, it's like I always say, Carl, 99% of success is enjoyed by 1% of the population. Shirt that I actually have, do you want it? That's my thing. And that came that came out of like, do you want it, dude? Are you just running your mouth?
Real Andrews:Are you just talking about it? And, you know, most people are talking about and what I love at sixty three, I call it, is it the triad or the quadrat? So basically, you know, so God First, right? I'm a carnivore coach. So I coached people for years, the standard American diet, but I've been carnivore for two years and a month now, which was a game game changer.
Real Andrews:Then, you know, then the workout piece. So it's like when I found shred fast, it's like you complete me. That's such that's all you got. If you got God, carnivore and the shred fast like and you know, you know, what's crazy call I used to do. I used to do this bro back in the day.
Real Andrews:We're going a long time back, twenty, thirty years ago. I remember I used to have, because I was, kettlebell certified, nothing like shred fast, the joke compared to shred but but but I was, you know, I it was part of my one of the tools I use in my gym. Used to travel in my car with a pair of kettlebells, skipping rope. I think I had something else because I used to hate traffic. So if they're in in LA, traffic's terrible.
Real Andrews:So if there was traffic, I'd pull over, and and I would do a workout. And fast forward to now, it's like you guys say it all the time. It's the truth. You don't you just need two kettlebells and a mat. That's it.
Real Andrews:Anywhere anywhere in the world. That's it. So, Carl, is there a moment you looked in the mirror and didn't like who you'd become chasing this level of discipline?
Carl Spellman:Do you mean being all into what I'm doing now? Like
Real Andrews:Yeah. I mean, do you is there like, do you have regret or anything, or do do you are you you can do you like who you are right now?
Carl Spellman:No. No. I it's I'm I'm a I'm a 10 times better person with it Mhmm. Than without it. The more discipline in my life, the more obsession with becoming better, finding God, putting God first.
Carl Spellman:Like, that's made me a better person. I'm a better person for me family, me friends. You know, I've got more confidence the way I speak now compared to how I used to speak. Everything about me because of, you know, Stretchfast and Put God First is is better. So, you know, the cost is, of course, you might have to miss out sometimes on going out with your friends and partying maybe, or, you know, I feel like my friends might have felt that in the in recent years and stuff.
Carl Spellman:So but you can't have every and there's gotta be some sacrifice. Like we said, that word just keeps coming up. Mhmm. Things are going to be sacrificed, but, you know, the cost of it is is worth it in my opinion. I'm a better person with it.
Carl Spellman:And by what I said before with God First, that is like sometimes people don't understand what that means, and what I've found lately is that with God first, it forces you to do the right thing at all times. So doing your steadfast work out at some point in the day is putting God first because you're, you know, you've got the Holy Spirit inside your body, you've got the temple of God, and you've got to make that a place that's sacred and looked after, and you're not fueling it with the wrong things and putting the wrong foods in and stuff like that. So God first doesn't just mean constantly, you know, being having that conversation, which is which is definitely important, but it also means in the physical world is which what we live in, is looking after the body, looking after the mind, doing the right thing in the right moment. And and a lot of that is, you know, taking care of yourself is actually can be putting God first because you're looking after that body.
Real Andrews:Well, it is putting God first. Is it scriptural? Right? We're supposed to take care we're supposed to take care of the vessel. And, you know, a lot of times, I when I'm doing workouts, you know, one of the things I do, Carl, I actually either I'm reading scripture.
Real Andrews:I have scripture there written. I'm memorizing it, you know, different stuff like that. When you talk about one of the sermons I'm working on, it's interesting. I do a quick little give you the cliff notes. Might use this in the training.
Real Andrews:You know, I'm speaking to believer or followers actually believers versus followers and believe, you know, the difference between a believer and a followers caller, Carl.
Carl Spellman:I would say a believer is someone who knows that there's a god, but not necessarily, you know, chooses to live in that way. Whereas a follower, you know, picks up the cross and and is daily, you know, seeking the best ways to to follow.
Real Andrews:Yeah. I I I say I have a funny saying. I say believers would wanna be Christians, but they wanna do it the Burger King way. They wanna do it their way. Right?
Real Andrews:Follow through it Yahweh.
Carl Spellman:Exact Yahweh. Exactly. Yeah. I love it.
Real Andrews:Yeah. Let me see. What's what's something about elite athlete life that's lonelier than people assume? Because it looks like you live in La Vida Loca over there.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. But even even that is perception, isn't it? Just Instagram and YouTube, TikTok, you're putting your life into a few seconds, so it's not the full truth. It can look nice, and you're doing it for the purpose, and there is definitely nice things that are happening in life, which I'm so grateful for. But there's times where I'm away from my family for months at a time, so I've just been training a guy across Europe, a billionaire guy.
Carl Spellman:And, you know, it's it's unbelievable, the lifestyle that I'm living, the the energy that I'm around, the the the luxury, the material. But I'm there by myself at the end of the day, I'm away from my family. And again, that word sacrifice, it does get lonely at times. You know what mean? There is moments where you're like, you know, why am I doing this?
Carl Spellman:What's it for? Because, you know, what what's most important? But there's gotta be there's gotta be sacrifice in life, and it does it does get lonely at times, but I feel like Shredfast does bring people together. Like, look at me and you now talking. It's like when when would that ever have happened without Shredfast?
Carl Spellman:So, you know, there's many things that bring people together, but I think the world's about to find out that this movement and this way of life and this lifestyle and putting God first and getting your workouts in and eating good, this is the new era, and then this is gonna bring everyone back together. This is gonna bring so many people across the world back together. And, you know, the lonely times, the suffering, it will pay. It will pay off in the end. So as long as you know that it'll pay in the end, then it's worth it.
Real Andrews:Yeah. You know? And it you know, this would be going a little kind of deep, but the Holy Spirit told me to ask because a lot of men we live, you know, that's kind of my my demographic is men, but men we live in isolation. A lot of men live in isolation and they watch and they can watch either of us. Right?
Real Andrews:And I can't speak for you or maybe you I know Luke's story a little bit. I'm thinking I don't I don't remember hearing or reading anything about you. If you have any like demons like that or something, but you know I deal with depression you know I'm sober and I know for me there's been sometimes where already and it hasn't been a full year for me yet with Shredfast but I know there's specifically been sometimes when that depression demon was coming in and Shredfast got me through it. You know, I just know I knew that. If anybody's watching this, can relate to this.
Real Andrews:I knew that I just had to get to the gym and then I just had to pick up turn on the app. Then just once I could get into it, and then by the end of the workout, I'm much better. You know, if I would listen to myself, didn't want to do it. I didn't feel like it, but I knew my saving grace was I just get in the car, just go to the gym, just turn on that app. You know, God will give you just what you need at that time and save it.
Real Andrews:But I know that it saved my butt. Do you have like, is there like, you know, because people are watching you. They see you training billionaires. They see you elite athlete. Like, do they think everything's perfect, but is it I know it's not.
Carl Spellman:Definitely not. You've got I think it's a Bruce Lee quote, know yourself to know others. So you know what you're going through no matter when it's good or bad. There's people you look at Tyson Fury, Mike Tyson, Conor McGregor, they've they look like they've lived the greatest life, and they've reached the biggest of goals, being the elite fighters and all the money, everything. Even they go through depression, so, you know, know yourself to know others as a human being.
Carl Spellman:Even on even if things are going well, sometimes the mind can take over and the devil creeps in and you succumb to sin like we are all sinners at the end of the day. Every moment of the day, you're in a sort of a battle of good and evil, whether we like it or not. There's a constant battle of good and evil going on all around us. And, yeah, it might look great on the outside, like we said about social media. I can portray a certain image, and and life is going really good for me.
Carl Spellman:All all praise be to God. But, you know, there's definitely days. There's definitely moments. There's definitely I people think, oh, you do shred fast, and you elite shred fast, that you must love it. But there's days where I literally do not want to train.
Carl Spellman:I do not want to get up. And like you just said then, you just put yourself in the car. You know, by just getting to that place, getting your head in the scripture, and getting that working. You know you're gonna feel better afterwards. Some days you feel unbelievable afterwards, and some days you only get like a half a buzz, half a good feeling, but you know that you're moving forward and there's gonna be so many days where you just don't wanna get off.
Carl Spellman:You don't wanna do it. And that's between, you know, that's just between yourself. Can you do it when no one's looking when no one's watching? How bad do you want it? Like your T shirt says.
Real Andrews:Yeah. Amen. Amen. Let's see. Oh, this yeah.
Real Andrews:This one's good. We just having so much fun. I didn't even get to my questions. Okay. If your body stopped being able to perform tomorrow, who would you be without it?
Carl Spellman:Well, so I've this is a great topic because it's it's I've I was having this conversation with myself the last few days. So I've had three days off a train this morning, and I feel fantastic. Like, I feel brilliant. But for the last three days, I've been, you know, in and out of depression, in and out of feeling good about myself. The thoughts are different, the way I speak.
Carl Spellman:I don't wanna interact with people the same. So I'm definitely a different person, but I can't rely on it too much is what I'm realizing is that my identity can't be on I I have to train, and then I'm I'm a good person because, you know, you know, what God can give, God can take. And, yeah, I'm realizing definitely that I need to be a better person without training. I need to be able to still live in God's word, still show up for myself without being able to move my body because, you know, one day it can be taken away from you, then you've gotta be ready for that. People, live fantastic lives, and some people get given bad cards, you can lose your sight, you can lose your body, you're going to lose everything in life.
Carl Spellman:Yeah, I would say that there's definitely a battle between when I'm training and when I'm not training. I'm a better person with training, all praise be to God, but I need to become better without it too because you're going to get injured, you're going to get days, you know, bad things can happen, you can lose the ability to train. Hopefully not. Hopefully, you know, I'm I'm grateful till till the day I go out, but, you know, that's not real life. So as as it's a great question because I don't just wanna be a good person because I train.
Carl Spellman:I wanna be a good person without it too. Mhmm. So what would you say to that? What do you feel like that? Like, what what's your perspective?
Real Andrews:I, you know, I agree with thank you for asking the question. I back at me. I, you know, I agree a 100% because, you know, I'm I'm I'm going through that myself right now, you know, at 63, I've been I've been in the fitness since I was 16. Yeah. You know, then I got into the the the acting businesses, as I said.
Real Andrews:So, you know, my whole identity was being physically fit, you know, in shape. I mean, and so, you know, there there came a point in my life recently where, you know, you're getting older, you're not looking like those young bucks anymore. You know, if if I didn't have God as identity, you know, for me, that change knowing that I'm just a bond servant. I'm a vessel Isaiah six eight use me that nothing else matters was a huge thing for me because yeah, you know, I realized that, you know, when I put God First, he he loves me no matter how but you know, we still need to be I'll share this with you. It's really crazy.
Real Andrews:Said this. So my dad, my stepdad, but he's my dad was, you know, he was my inspiration for becoming a trainer, Carl. And I remember when I was like 13, he used to do these things called push ups and sit ups and roll all over the floor. Then he'd flex for me. And I'm like, looking at my dad like what an a you know, like who is this crazy guy?
Real Andrews:Next next thing I know I ordered that first weeder weightlifting bench with the you know, the one with a 100 but anyways, so that was my dad's identity. That was who he was. He was a trainer. He worked really hard at it and provided a good life for mom and him and bought a house and our apartment and, you know, had a great plan. And then at 63, he got Parkinson's.
Real Andrews:And, you know, that wasn't part of the plan, bro. And he, you know, eventually, you could imagine, he couldn't train anymore. And, you know, the good that the other side of that is that so you you do need to set yourself up on all side of things.
Carl Spellman:And who are you then? Isn't it? Who who are you then when when all gets taken away? You look at Muhammad Ali. I am the greatest.
Carl Spellman:I am the greatest. And then he gets humbled because that's what God does. What what he can give, he can take away. And, you know, that's what I'm I'm I'm blessed to even be having this conversation with you now and in this mindset that, you know, I'm fit and able-bodied now, but you never know what's around the corner and what God can give, God can take away. So I wanna just live in his word and, you know, have the, you know, that rock that that's that that the thing that I revert back to when when if all if all if all hell broke loose and everything went wrong in me life, then at least I'd have that because that's all I need.
Carl Spellman:And and that's the mentality that I'm trying to adopt. Not saying I'm implementing it, definitely not enough, But, you know, this is this is this is life. I'm I'm I'm I'm sure I'll get there in the end. You know what I mean?
Real Andrews:Yeah. I you know, just little side note, Carl, this is crazy. So when my dad had Parkinson's and when it got really, really bad at the end, really bad, that it would literally take three hours to get him dressed. He was in the hospital, the whole deal, bro. It's the craziest thing you've ever seen two things.
Real Andrews:Working out was his thing, obviously. And I didn't even know this playing the piano. But so if you we get we take three hours, get my dad ready, get him in a in a wheelchair. And if you wheel them down either there was a piano in the hospital. Okay.
Real Andrews:And there was also a little workout room. And if you wheel them into the to the piano, bro, you get them take two, three people, lift them up on the bench, and you you take his hand and you put it on the keys. All of a sudden, bro, he just like like and the same thing you take him into the gym and you walk him to the machines and all of a sudden, it was like he like, it was the craziest thing to see. And then the minute he took him away from it, he'd be like, just, like, fall back to the yeah. It's the Wow.
Carl Spellman:Like, just recognized his body. You would just recognize.
Real Andrews:Yeah.
Carl Spellman:That's what he's doing because he took so many reps of playing the piano and lifting and wow. That's that's that's interesting to see because you see how powerful the mind is then, don't you?
Real Andrews:Well, and check this out in terms of when we talk about health. My dad had a friend and literally within about a couple weeks, they both found out that they had Parkinson's within about two weeks of each other And both of them, was basically the same story. The doctor said, Hey, you're 63. You've had a great life. It is what it is.
Real Andrews:We can make it comfortable, but blah, blah, blah. Well, my dad didn't accept that because you know, he's like you and me. He keep he kept working out dude. He went home to be with the Lord at 84 his friend who wasn't a person who worked out. He accepted that literally threw in the he was in a wheelchair within a couple months and he passed away within two years.
Real Andrews:Wow, my dad lived twenty years is the power of the mind. The mind is terrible. So let me see. So a couple faith questions. A couple more questions will get you out of here champ.
Real Andrews:So where does faith or something bigger than yourself show up and how you push your body and discipline your life?
Carl Spellman:It's it's every day. It's it's lately, me me whole me whole routine is to get into God's word as soon as possible. So I'll get me shower straight away, as soon as I wake, Get me shower, feel clean, put me stuff on, and I go outside if it's not raining outside in England. And I'll put my feet onto the grass, and I'll and I'll open my book. I'll open the bible, and I'm just straight into that word as soon as possible.
Carl Spellman:Soon as I've brushed my teeth and showered, cleaned myself up, then I feel like I'm mentally ready to, you know, to go. But it's it's it's it's getting it done as early as possible because, you know, yourself, the mind wanders and stress is coming and you're thinking about what else can I do that day? I feel like everything that happens well in my life happens because when I'm putting God first, and I've tried both ways. I've tried to do it without him. I've tried to do it with him, and there's just there's just no there's no there's no point in in trying to do it without him because it's it's not you at the end of the day.
Carl Spellman:So faith is so important to me now more than ever. I'm getting closer to God each day. And even in the workouts, I feel like you you are probably, you know, heavy on this yourself, especially if you've got the scripture right next to you, is that when you're going through that pain and, you know, you're doing this workouts and you're able-bodied and how grateful you are, But understanding, you know, what Jesus went through and the the the pain he actually went through, which is absolutely nothing to what I'm going through now, doing a few thrusters, a few babies, a few you crazy. You've you're nailed to a cross and and every your your body stabbed and spat on and to a cross or walking through the, you know, through the hills with it with a cross on your back and, you know, all the horrible things that will happen that he had to go through. And I can't push through through this little short fast workout.
Carl Spellman:No way. And that just gives me, like, a that when that comes to me head, that gives me, like, a second second wind. You know what I mean? I can go even harder. So I'm sure that you get that.
Carl Spellman:I'm sure you think that
Real Andrews:I do that. I say that Carl. I've said that for years. I said, like, I personally use it. Sometimes I coach it out loud, you know, but all the time, I'm like, bro, like when I'm hurting, I'm like seriously real.
Real Andrews:Are you serious right now? You think about Jesus what he like just like what you said through that's all, you know, I'm gonna call this podcast putting God First the title. We've said it so many times, but I've been toying. I've been toying with part of my ministry training in a couple weeks. I got a sermon lab coming up.
Real Andrews:So I've been toying with three different sermons, but I now know thank you Holy Spirit with I'll get. I'll give you a quick CliffsNotes version because it's kind of cool when you think about Put God First because we've said it so many times and and to to the people watching this. So I'll ask people I'll say so, you know, I give them a list. So you got God your spouse, if you're not married, your parents, your kids, you know, Jim, your health work, you know, your job phone, whatever. And I ask them, I say, put in order of preference what's most important in your life.
Real Andrews:And most people, they're gonna go God first, they're gonna go their spouse second, which is biblically correct. That's the way it should be right truth, right? And then I say, okay, awesome. And then I go awesome. So just number that.
Real Andrews:And then I say, okay, so draw a line there. Now and I go down real quickly. I'll say, okay, so how much time do you spend a week specifically intensely with God? How much time do you spend with your spouse? Write that number next to it.
Real Andrews:How much time do you spend with your kids? How much time blah, blah, blah, blah. And then I say, okay, now look at that list. And according to the amount of time,
Carl Spellman:put it in the real order,
Real Andrews:put it in the real order and like, like, yeah, it's crazy. All right. Last two questions brother. Cause I you probably got some clients. What's one true?
Real Andrews:No, hold on. Would you? No, I got one. Let me see. Hold on one relation.
Real Andrews:So we've been talking a lot about discipline Carl. So what do you think discipline is actually for beyond how you look?
Carl Spellman:Yeah. Discipline is you know, if you're putting yourself first truly, if you're putting even though we just spoke about God and putting God first, sometimes you've gotta put yourself first, like we said about the body and and the mind and stuff, which is actually, you know, a gift from God. By putting yourself first, you know what's the say the question again. Sorry. I got a bit lost there.
Real Andrews:Yeah. No. No. No. You're good.
Real Andrews:Good. What's one truth about discipline or the body you want no. Oh, that's did I do that right?
Carl Spellman:Discipline. Yeah.
Real Andrews:Oh, no. This one right here. What do you think discipline is actually for beyond how you look?
Carl Spellman:Yeah. But how you look is just a byproduct, isn't it? That comes naturally. So if you get in good shape, it's gonna look good. But by putting, you know, these difficult tasks first is actually putting yourself first.
Carl Spellman:So getting up in the morning, getting a cold shower, being in the bible, you know, putting other people before yourself. That is actually putting you first because it comes, you know, yourself. It comes back around to enhance your life. And I just feel like discipline is everything. Is without discipline, try try living without discipline, and you'll find out quicker.
Carl Spellman:You're not happy. You know, you're not in good shape. You're not feeling good. You're not speaking good. Bad things are happening.
Carl Spellman:But the more disciplined you are, the more good chance you've got of the good happening. And, you know, like we said, putting God first above all leads into just true happiness and true contentment and true peace and all of these things that all these words that get mentioned over and over again, by putting God at the center and you're actually putting yourself first because he's gonna gift you everything. You know what I mean? Mhmm. I'll seek his what is it?
Carl Spellman:Seek his seek his kingdom and all Mhmm. Righteousness will be given to you. So, you know, put him first, live in his words, seek his kingdom, and and the rest will follow. That is discipline. That is true discipline.
Real Andrews:Yeah. And you know that when we talk about discipline, one of the things and then I got our my last question for you. To people watching this as a coach, what I would say like for somebody like me and you who's in the industry, it's pretty obvious to me, but people they get champions and I'm talking to somebody right now needs to hear this. We get influenced. Get on these, you see these this coach with this latest workout or you see this or you see that.
Real Andrews:Here's what I can tell you with somebody who's been in industry. Like, one of the things I look for is consistency, and I look for results. I don't know why people don't don't catch this. They see there's coaches with these workout programs, and I'm like, bro, if the it's, like, if if you're if that's what we're gonna look like because your program like and that but one of the things if you look at any shred fast video, any shred fast video in any coach, in any workout, you're gonna see a consistent shape in these people's bodies depending on what part of the journey they're in. And also the other side of the coin is like, I know because I can tell because I've done it.
Real Andrews:I've done it all. Dude, they're not injecting themselves with all kind of stuff and and, you know, taking those out. They're just throwing some two kettlebells around. And if you do the work, you're gonna get those kind of results. So it's the real deal, guys.
Real Andrews:It's the real deal. These workouts, that's what you wanna look for champions. When you're looking for something to follow, look at the results in the page. Like, look. Is is is just one guy in the class in shape, or are they all kinda look the same?
Real Andrews:Like, dude, I never seen so many guys with six pack abs in my life. That's not an accident, guys. That's not an accident because that's one of the hardest things to do is get that. So you wanna say, like, wow. And the women.
Real Andrews:Look at the women. Like, come on. Mhmm. So anyway
Carl Spellman:Yeah. Yeah.
Real Andrews:Last question. It's not just about
Carl Spellman:the workhouse. It's it's the food too. You know I mean? It's discipline it's discipline in all realms. In all realms, like, not just the food, not just the training, not just the recovery.
Carl Spellman:You know, there's a lot of people who who, you know, have found God in Shredfast, and I think that's another reason. Happened? Sorry. Someone rang there.
Real Andrews:Yeah. Oh,
Carl Spellman:good. Yeah. Am I back on? Yeah?
Real Andrews:Yeah. Yeah. You good?
Carl Spellman:Can you hear me?
Real Andrews:Yeah. I can hear you.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. Sorry. I think it's cut off.
Real Andrews:No. No. You're good. You're good.
Carl Spellman:Yeah. I can't hear you. I don't think.
Real Andrews:Oh, you can hear me?
Carl Spellman:Right there. There.
Real Andrews:Oh, go. I can hear you. Yeah. You can't hear me?
Carl Spellman:I can't hear, bro. Right there. Oh. Let me see if I can get more. Can I I can't hear you still?
Real Andrews:Oh, man. Alright. Well, I guess we'll have to can you hear me now?
Carl Spellman:Yes. Perfect.
Real Andrews:You hear me now? There we go.
Carl Spellman:Yeah, yeah. One I'm percent as well, brother. We'll have
Real Andrews:to back question. Last question champion. If someone remembers one sentence from this conversation today, what do you want it to be?
Carl Spellman:Put God first. Exactly like the description. Seek his kingdom. God first. Know what Jesus done for you, and everything else will fall into place.
Carl Spellman:So if that's the message, think that we're gonna go with today is put God first, and all will be given to you.
Real Andrews:Amen. All the glory to God. Well, guys, thank you for watching this podcast, Carl. You've been awesome. Make sure you're following Carl at Carl Spellman.
