The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast April 4, 2023 with all praises due.  Tonight we open in 1968 as we mourn the 55th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  All the words, all the praises, all the vile insults, and everything else have been thrown about this Hero of the People and Prophet of Peace but we can only give a kiss and point to the sky above to a man who changed the world with his martyrdom.  After that, we had a ton of indie & underground cuts just out to tout, with highlights from Parks Squares & Alleys along with spill tab, JVLY, and Pebbl amongst others for the rest of the full two hours after we wiped away the tears.

Part 1
Dion – Abraham, Martin, and John
Private Agenda – Presence
Tyler, The Creator – WHAT A DAY*
Emmet Kai – Hoolywood
spill tab - Window
TOLEDO – Patch*
Panchiko – Until I Know

It is 20 hours past midnight and it is Tuesday so as always we make up for what is undoubtedly the lowest rated day of the work week with our favorite night of programming, as it is our Under The Radar indie weekly. Great tunes to get through tonight from spill tab, Clairo, Pearl and The Oysters along with Buzzy Lee just to name a few so lots of new to show you as per usual unusual for tonight’s audio exploration. However, we start tonight’s show back in 1968 as we mark 55 years since a prophet of peace and freedom was gunned down in Memphis, and give a kiss and a point to the sky to Martin Luther King, Jr in the process as we process. THIS is The Drop.

Facts
Dion – Abraham, Martin, and John
- Marking 55 years since Martin Luther King, Jr. was gunned down in Memphis, TN. A man who advocated nonviolence and no fear in the face of the ugliest racism and violence, King was a prophet, but only human as he was assassinated on this date in 1968 on the balcony of a hotel.
- Of course, this is mega deep history on so many levels, we could dedicate the entire next month and not cover it all. But we had to mark this occasion with proper remembrance, and that was Dion’s hit of the same year dedicated to King after the horrific events of today.
Private Agenda – Presence
- Our first tune of the night takes us over to Europe with this remote duo. This is the project of London-based Sean Phillips and Martin Agrrowe, who is in the German capital Berlin.
- This is the latest single in the rather limited discog thus far, with the band having made debut in 2018.
Tyler, The Creator – WHAT A DAY*
- Call Me If You Get Lost, The Estate Sale, which is the deluxe version of Tyler’s 2021 album just dropped last Friday and this is one of a smattering of tunes left off the album that feature on the deluxe reboot.
- As always, just extra nice stuff, with a bit of naughty on the linguistics thrown in.
Emmet Kai – Hoolywood
- This artist is from Northern California and now lives in NYC.
- If you want to check for more from the artist, check out 2020’s Freak Pop Novelty LP or 2019’s Baby Hits, but this tune features on Emmett Kai’s latest EP, just dropped Friday called Heaven In Heat.
spill tab - Window
- This is a teaser tune from the artist’s upcoming EP, which is due out in May on Arista Records.
- And true to form, you never know what’s coming from spill tab until you listen, with the artist noting this song was inspired by Talking Heads.
TOLEDO – Patch*
- This is the final tune on another deluxe edition album just out last Friday.
- Last year, the band based in NYC but from Mass released the How It Ends LP, and the deluxe is the unrated edition if you wanna check out more from this very talented duo.
Panchiko – Until I Know

Part 2
Clairo – For Now
Pebbl – Space Travel
Ezra Williams – Bleed
Daydream Review – Leisure
Buzzy Lee – When Can I
Gregory Ackerman – Don’t Know Why I Love
rainbow frog biscuits – Hide Behind

Facts
Clairo – For Now
- Well, we started the show with a shooting in Tennessee 55 years ago that still reverberates, and this tune is released for the benefit of trans youth and gun violence.
- This would be the artist’s answer to the horrific shooting in Nashville last week, leaving 3 children and 3 teachers dead.
Pebbl – Space Travel
- This is the project of Gina Marie Tratt, who’s based in Bristol in the UK, and would be the artist’s debut single.
- Not surprising that this is on the Nice Guys label, as it is extra quality. Very excited to hear more from Pebbl.
Ezra Williams – Bleed
- This is an amazing artist we’ve really been rating since they released their debut Eps.
- Good news for fans is that Ezra Williams is droping their debut album Supernumaries in June, of which this brooder is a part.
Daydream Review – Leisure
- This is the solo project of Elijah Montez, who grew up in Austin, TX but kind of switched the moniker and musical stylings in the process of moving to Chicago.
- The artist per the bio says that the music focuses on the double-sided nature of anticipation and change, along with the conflicted feelings of nostalgia, longing, and excitement.
Buzzy Lee – When Can I
- For those unaware, this is the solo project of Sasha Spielberg, the daughter of the famed director.
- This tune is part of Spielberg’s debut album that just dropped on Friday called Internal Affairs, so go check it out if you are thirsting for more after that tune.
Gregory Ackerman – Don’t Know Why I Love*
- This is part of an upcoming EP from the LA born-and-raised singer-songwriter that comes out later this spring.
- The EP is called Mmm okay, and comes on the heels of Ackerman’s self-released 2021 album Still Waiting Still.
rainbow frog biscuits – Hide Behind
- This is an artist t/n Amber Louise who says they just wanna make some quirky, groovy things, and naturally this our hands down winner for moniker of the week.
- Just a smattering of singles since debut in 2021 in the discog, but as far as this tune goes it seems that Amber Louise is certainly succeeding in the quirk and groove mission.

Part 3
JVLY feat Una Mey – tacit
JVLY – ambien
Aaron Joseph Russo – Calzone
44 Ardent – far gone
Overmono – Good Lies
PACKS – Not The Same
VULPIX – Losing Sleep

Facts
JVLY feat Una Mey – tacit
JVLY – ambien
- A couple of recent tunes from JVLY (note sp.), which is the solo project of Aussie-based artist Kayle Butler and appears courtesy of big up forever label Mammal Sounds.
- JVLY says more music is on the way this year, so possibly an album or EP is in the offing, and for our language point tonight, (explain tacit meaning)
Aaron Joseph Russo – Calzone
- Staying down under for this one, and very excited to see this artist back out with new tunes.
- Russo is based in Melbourne, and this would be the latest standalone from him courtesy of France’s Nice Guys, so as usual more extra quality from the label based in France.
44 Ardent – far gone
- Further good biz from Jez Ryan and Mammal Sounds, this being an artist we’ve featured on the show several times but keeps the ident a closely kept secret.
- The artist says that the song is about gazing into the ocean to gather your thoughts. When having a hard time in life, sometimes it’s just good to look at something vast.
Overmono – Good Lies
- For those unaware, this band is a very much on the rise live electronic act which hails from the UK.
- May 12 will see the band release their debut LP, of which this is the title track, and 4th single to drop. Do check this group’s other work, that is highly anticipated stuff for a very good reason.
PACKS – Not The Same
- This tune is from the Canadian artist’s sophomore album that just dropped last Friday.
- The album titled Crispy Crunchy Nothing deals with all the stress events in one fell swoop, be it burnout, dead end jobs, bike theft, stress dreams, heartbreak, and the like.
- Do check their debut from 2021 as well, which is called Take The Cake.
VULPIX – Losing Sleep
- Well, speaking of stress and dreamtime, our final tune tonight comes from the world of Pokemon, apparently.
- The artist states their music is low hanging fog in the valley, a midnight bike ride, a fuzzy quilt that blankets you in a warm glow.

Part 4
Lino City – Centerfold
Blue Daze – The Rancher
Sego – TANDANG
Parks, Squares, & Alleys – Shadows
Pearl & The Oysters feat Laetitia Sadier – Read the Room
Ben Jansz – Spirit
Summer Salt – Supermoon

Facts
Lino City – Centerfold
- Nothing out there as far as bio goes on this one.
- This would be the artist’s 3rd release to date, and it seems there a duo going on here, as the bio on IG says simply syd n blu, and that’s all I got.
Blue Daze – The Rancher
- This band is a trio composed of Jon Morrow, Michael Killian, and Gunner Cagle.
- On the former, Morrow is also a solo artist from Hattiesburg, MS and the other grew up there as well. The band says they’re inspired by the sounds of the 1960’s and psyche from the 2010’s.
- And congrats to all involved here, as this is the group’s debut single. Kudos.
Sego – TANDANG
- This is a group from Utah originally that call LA home.
- The group states their music is art punk by non-punk non-artists, which we can obviously get down with on this show 100%.
Parks, Squares, & Alleys – Shadows
- For those that do listen to the show, you will know that the previous rhymes but also that this is the solo project of noise monk & DIY dude Sergey Khavro, who hails from the Georgian capital of Tblisi.
- Kinda feels like there’s something larger on the way here, as this is the 2nd single to drop in about a month’s time, but we’ll just have to wait & see on that.
Pearl & The Oysters feat Laetitia Sadier – Read the Room
- This is an unbelievable team-up right here. For those unaware, Pearl & The Oysters is a band formed in Florida by some French expats who’ve now signed with Stones Throw and moved to LA.
- Laetitia Sadier of course is one of the lead vocalists of Stereolab, and of course a tremendous solo artist, and this is the 4th and VERY different single from the band’s upcoming debut album Coast 2 Coast, which drops on April 21.
Ben Jansz – Spirit
- One of our favorite artists and a finalist at the recent Buskers World Cup here in Gwangju is out with this single as of one week ago today.
- The self-described purveyor of organic trance is certainly in that mode with this lush, beautiful piece.
Summer Salt – Supermoon
- And finally, a band that was just here in Korea on tour is out with this tune, which is a teaser single to their upcoming Campanita.
- Did anyone see them live up in Seoul? I’d have loved to have caught it, but impossible to get there. Campanita drops in full on April 19, by the way, so just over two weeks from now.
