The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg

And the password for today is... Was it preemptive, proactive, or redundant?

OK Solberg:

I want again. Welcome into the 04:05 coffee break. It's a new week. Get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, or bottled water. Let's see what's happening.

OK Solberg:

Spring weight, $6.20 a bushel, 550 pounds steer calf, $3.92 50. How's that for precise? A butcher hog in Omaha, 62ยข a pound, and a 100 pound fat lamb in Billings will fetch $2.34, but guys, there's more, much more. I like words. I can't help it.

OK Solberg:

I know it's a thing not highly desired. I'm trying to get over it. I'm getting better. Yet still the love lingers. It's kind of like that brunette in study hall that sits in the third row, two desks back from the front.

OK Solberg:

When she looks at me with those brown eyes and that sweet smile, I I don't know. It pulls me in, drives me crazy. Then she's the only thing I think of. Can't get her off of out of my mind. I know.

OK Solberg:

If I went to a counselor, I can hear it play out. He clears his throat and asks, when did you first notice this fascination with words? I'd have to answer, I noticed it at an early age. Why why? I remember my father saying to my mother, darling, do you have a hunch when our little bundle of wiggles and giggles plans to make their grand debut?

OK Solberg:

Oh, I remember hearing that and thinking. It's delightful that language can sound like music in a storybook. The combination of the word hunch mixed in with the word debut, oh, kinda like cousin Barney trying to sound intelligent, like I just wanna say that again. And then I hear the melody in the chorus of wiggles and giggles. I can hear the counselor saying to his secretary, this may be worse than I anticipated.

OK Solberg:

We definitely will need to seek weekly sessions and start immediately. Yeah. Well, he can say what he wants, but I love words. It's like that girl in study hall. I know she has a boyfriend, but dang it, I can't get her out of my mind.

OK Solberg:

So, yes, I have a problem, but I'm getting better. And frankly, I don't think it's nearly as bad as the doc thinks. Oh, sorry. Did I say that out loud? Anyway, I do have a fascination with words.

OK Solberg:

The other morning we were sitting drinking coffee and the word preemptive is the word I was searching for in my mind and it wasn't coming to me. And Mike chimed in and named the word I was looking for, bingo. Then I got to thinking, sure, preemptive is a cousin to proactive. The definition of preempt is take action in order to prevent. Sure, same idea with proactive.

OK Solberg:

Doing something in anticipation. Proactive, creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened. Now with this new development, I thought of other synonyms. Deterrent, precursive, anticipatory. Oh yes, that's my kind of stuff.

OK Solberg:

I hit the keyboard, I desired a proactive stance, so I orchestrated a preemptive maneuver, hoping for a deterrent, not simply a precursor and anticipatory endeavor. And as soon as I had typed that out, well, another word came to mind, redundant. What does redundant mean? Exceeding what is necessary or normal, characterized by or containing an excess. Oh, yes, guys.

OK Solberg:

I had fallen in love with a word and found all its cousins, and I put them all together like in a family reunion. Don't need to do that, no. See, the beauty of words are they have a precise definition, and when you use one correctly, it says it all. No need to add extra filler. I didn't need to say I sought a proactive initiative, so I launched a preemptive preliminary advance maneuver, not merely a forethought driven anticipatory action.

OK Solberg:

Talk about redundant, I feel myself getting sick. So the password for today, and the password is preemptive, proactive, and redundant. Let me share a Bible verse, it might be the only thing from this episode that you can understand. Listen, so it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how can anyone know what you're saying?

OK Solberg:

You will just be speaking into the air. First Corinthians fourteen nine. I hope I wasn't speaking into the air. So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
