What is Money Lab?

Matt Giovanisci and friends drop the gauntlet of truth about being self-employed, serial entrepreneurs. They're not "teaching" how to build a successful company. Instead, they run business challenges and experiments offering a transparent view of what it takes to make money online.

Matt: Hey, everyone.

This is Matt.

Matchup in the Java.

Given a blond ski or something.

Something, something Italian.

And if you're listening to this,
that means you are listening

to season three of money lab.

Let's get into it.

Ah, yes.

It is a new episode, you know what?

It's not even an episode.

This is more of an announcement
of the money lab podcast.

What's going on?

Why is this happening?

Why am I appearing in your feed?

What happened to the original
version of the podcast?

Can I have that?

Yes.

Cause it's available right here right now.

But what you're listening to is
season three of the money lab

podcast, and why what's happening.

What's going, what's going on.

And I want to tell you, because
I don't really know what's going

on, but I want to tell you this.

You are the reason that
this show is coming back.

Constantly on Twitter and through
emails, through your emails.

To me, you say.

What happened to the money lab podcast?

I love the money lab podcast.

Bring back the money lab podcast,
bring back lists of money matters.

No.

Sorry, that's not going
to happen, but bring back.

You know, bring back the other stuff.

And that's, and that's exactly
what I'm doing right now, but.

It's going to be a little different.

I think we're the only one up to you.

You tell me what you want to hear.

But here's my plan.

For season three.

Of money lap.

It's going to be an audio show.

Yes, I did it.

You know, before there was money lab live,
which was season two, was the, it was

experiment that lasted a couple of months.

And I would do these shows
and interview people.

On YouTube and then just rip the audio,
stick it on a podcast and call it a day.

But that's not what I really want
to do because I love broadcasting.

A lot of people don't know this and
they probably shouldn't because it's

not that interesting, but I used to.

Want to be a radio disc jockey.

Or sorry, radio DJ for the layman.

And.

I wanted to, I wanted to, to, to.

You know, Do the news
I want, I like reading.

I like being on a microphone.

I like hearing the sound of my own voice.

No, that's not even true.

I like hearing this on my own voice when
I'm talking, but I do not like listening

back to my own voice and editing.

So this, this show is going
to be live to me, to you.

With very little editing
that doesn't matter.

That's just all process stuff and
I'll get into process stuff, but

what am I, what am I trying to say?

What I'm trying to say is that this
show is probably going to be mostly a

solo show of me talking directly to you.

I may have some guest on, I may even put
this up as a YouTube video here and there.

But for the most part,
it's going to be this and.

What's the content.

That's what everyone wants to know.

What are you, what are you doing now?

What are we going to listen to?

Are these going to be.

Like season one where you and
Andrew or just you and a gas

would talk about a specific topic.

You know, maybe it was email
marketing, maybe it was SEO.

Maybe it was affiliate marketing.

No, that's not what this is going to be.

I had an idea.

And I'm going to tell
you this idea, which is.

I thought it would be great.

To just tell.

Business stories.

And, and what do I mean by that?

So, On money lab.

I have 45 challenges and
experiments that I've done.

And.

Even privately, I've done
a ton of challenges and

experiments in my former life.

Before the internet marketing
phase, I have business stories.

Things where I've made money and
haven't made money and failed miserably.

I want to tell those stories to you.

Because I think that would
be really interesting.

I would love to hear someone just
tell stories and I would love

to hear other people's stories.

And so my thought process for
this podcast is it's going to be.

Business stories.

Now not some other podcasts
out there where they interview

like a new entrepreneur every
day or something like that.

Cause then it didn't then ask the
same questions over and over again.

You know, that's not what I'm going to do.

What I'm thinking about doing
is just like talking about.

Stories that have happened to me
and bringing on guests that I know.

I have also great stories.

And not just like, how did you start
your business from start to scratch in

30 minutes, I'm talking like specific
little micro projects within the

larger context of an online business.

You know, maybe someone launched
a new product and it failed.

Maybe someone launched a new
physical product and it did well.

I want to hear those stories.

I want to see, I want
to hear what went wrong.

I want to hear numbers.

I want to hear Dietz.

That's details.

For short.

Vice versa.

Anyway.

Here's the problem with podcasting though.

And, and why I'm, I've been so hesitant.

To do this.

'cause I'm sitting here going well,
there's this whole vast world on YouTube

where I could just pump out YouTube videos
and then, you know, who's really listening

to podcasts and I came to a realization.

So one and the, and the first
story I want to tell, not in this

episode, this is just more of an
announcement in the next episode.

I want to tell the story.

Of how I decided to publish 31 videos in
a row on YouTube and the outcome of that.

Now you can go and read about that.

On money, lab.co right now.

But you can consider this podcast.

Watching the director's cut or the
director's commentary of your favorite

movie, except it's not dreadfully boring.

That's what I'm thinking.

I'm going to tell the story in
my own words about what happened,

share the numbers, share the.

Of the real struggles.

And some tidbits that
are not in the polished.

Edited article that I
put out into the world.

And then what the future plans
are and what led to it and

all the context around it.

We'll try it.

And we'll see what you think.

And that's, that brings me to the problem
with podcasting, which is I can go and

do this and put this up on YouTube.

And this bill would be fine.

And what's great about YouTube and the
reason why I had so much success with the.

With the.

The, the publishing schedule I
just did on YouTube was that.

I, there was comments and I was getting
comments from people going, this is good.

You are doing well, sir,
pat on the back, keep going.

I like these.

I as a podcaster.

Right now I'm sitting alone.

Completely alone.

And I'm talking to in a mic.

And there's no one here.

And then when I hit publish.

I don't hear shit.

I know, I hear nothing.

Because, how are you supposed to
communicate back to me that Hey.

I like this episode, keep doing
this episode or, Hey Matt, I have a

question about this that you said here.

I wish that that were the case, but
that's not the case in podcasting

and it probably never will be because
that's not what podcasting is.

If I, if I remember back to my
broadcasting days where I'd go on am

radio and tell stories about, I don't know
what the hell I was talking about then.

Going to the diner.

I like to go into the diner and I used to
go to the diner and that was the story.

I remember I told that
on am radio one time.

I had to write it and everything.

And.

And, you know, you know, it was fun.

It.

I got to be on the real radio.

I got it.

CBS.

I was on the radio.

It was nice.

And I, and I love that.

I love broadcasting and,
and there, the medium is.

You just, you put it out
there and you get no feedback.

And everyone's completely fine with that.

But this is the internet.

So I'm I'm, I would love
to figure out a way.

That there could be a feedback
loop between me and you.

And I don't know what that is yet, but
we're going to figure it out together.

The easiest way to communicate with me.

Is to tweet me.

You can tweet me at Matt NEC or.

You know, I'm sorry, you're
gonna have to look that up.

It's hard to spell.

G I O V a N I S C.

I.

Or you could just email me.

This is much easier,
Matt, at money lab.co.

I answer all my own emails.

I say that in every email.

And I still get people who email
me saying, I know this is Matt's

assistant blood Lin blood.

And it's not it's me.

I'm there on there.

And I want to hear from you and
I want to hear what you think.

And.

That's it.

So.

Announcement over.

And in the next episode,
I'm going to talk about.

A story.

I'm going to tell you a story.

About how I published 31
videos in a row on YouTube.

And actually made money, doing
it with very little subscribers.

And how I'm going to continue doing it.

Even with this podcast.

We'll have the podcast, which
will be for the audio listeners,

people that want to listen to this.

On the treadmill or going or driving,
commuting, whatever you're doing.

That or going for a walk.

Whatever you're doing.

This is going to be for
you exclusively for you.

That's my plan exclusively for you not
also uploaded on YouTube, although I

may do it sometimes, especially if I
have a guest, but for the most part, I

would like to just do an audio podcast.

That that's my dream personally.

The problem again, that I have with
doing that is that there's no feedback

loop and I would like a feedback loop.

So we'll figure that out together.

In the meantime.

I hope.

If you have any questions
or you or you, you.

You have some ideas for me
because I'm going to keep going.

I want you to email me mad@moneylab.co
or tweet me if you don't have to do that.

That's where I live.

And yeah, we'll see, we'll see you there.

So, In the meantime.

I'll see you in the next episode.

Goodbye.
