Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
And welcome to the 545th episode of Cinema Psyops. I'm your host, Cort, the guy who's doing the notes this week and talking about the movie The Driver from 1978, and sitting in the co-pilot seat this week and doing the
Hi, co-hosts.
Ugh Yeah. The driver. I need a driver.
I get way too drunk, man. I can't be behind the wheel of the car.
Oh wow. That's that's where you went with that. Okay. Yeah.
Yeah. I well listen, man, all right. I did the best I could with what I had with the time given.
This is an odd uh film to kind of cover because this is a Walter Hill film.
my first time watching the film was to actually cover it for the show here. And there's a lot of Walter Hill flavored uh stylistic choices and things that are definitely here and are pretty prevalent. And uh it's kind of it it is sort of a touch
stone of that, but it's also very different than a lot of his other films. Uh I although you can st like I said, there's a lot of like things that he does that are relatively similar with his uh his action and stuff like that. Like for instance, he did 48 hours and then another 48 hours.
Both of those films.
Oh, ja, ja, ja. Dat was een goed movie. Ja.
Yeah, and the style that you would get in the action with the chase scenes and the various fist fighting and the grittier style of dialogue and the people really getting at each other, that's all prevalent here. Yeah. But this one is so much more noir.
Noir.
It is. It's it feels like a film noir. Like it feels like it's very gritty. Like nobody has a name. All these people just have purposes or jobs they have to do and that's how they're known, right? Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
and that's
It's it's very cool. It's very it's it's got a little bit of an artsy flair to it, is what I'm getting at. And I really enjoyed the film. Spoiler alert to everybody. Um I tend to be a mark for Walter Hill films, and uh this one did not disappoint. So I'm actually pretty much.
Pretty excited to talk about it. I'm glad we were able to fit it in with the pre nineteen eighties uh car chase movies. And I think this is the last one, is it not? I think
I think so.
So yeah, let me uh go back and check the scheduling document just to confirm, but I think we're about to be on to Trucker movies post nineteen eighty.
Yep, because next is uh Smoky and the Bandit.
Yeah.
Yeah, we're on Trucker Movies post nineteen eighty. We gotta get Smokey and the Bandit too. Uh I think that just dropped off Netflix, so I'm going to have to find a way for you to be able to watch that besides that.
All right. And then uh a road games. Roadhouse.
Roadhouse. No, road games. That's the sort of horror movie, road trucker movie. That's the thing. Uh truck movies and other types of styles of movies, though even the biker movies had this.
Well hell. Uh just about every style of movie did this. Whenever your popularity was waning, like even Abbott and Costello, they start doing horror.
Or they bring horror elements into the genre that was popular and then boom, they have a crossover. And so that's kind of where Road Games comes in. It's sort of a slasher, uh, you know, road stalker type movie. We're gonna have more of those that we'll be talking about later on too. Yeah.
Yeah.
That w there's even one for Car Chase movies that we'll be talking about.
But let's actually get into talking about the driver. Let's show this movie the respect that it deserves. So we're gonna take a break here. We're gonna play the Legion Patreon ad because Bo did some podcasts. He's back. It's still relevant as far as I'm concerned.
And when we come back, there will be a song that will be created mere moments before the edit of this episode. And we will have that hopefully at least describe something having to do with the plot for the film.
And after that we will actually describe the part of the f plot of the film via a lot of fucking clips.
Clips. That was a lot of fucking words to say we're gonna play clips and fuck around.
Well that's what I do.
Jesus Christ, show off.
Oh, hi there.
I didn't see it.

Welcome back to Apparently Cort is now an MPR podcaster.
Welcome. There was more violence today in the Congo.
And I would just like to state that that song was definitely created near seconds before the edit of this episode was started, and it was
I can tell you that it definitely will feel like an orgy in your mouth when you listen to that song.
Oh god damn it, I was hoping you weren't gonna start in on that shit with this episode but
They're definitely gonna feel like dicks in your ear if you listen to that. Okay.
Okay, we're gonna stop with that.
That's a Psyop guarantee.
We're gonna stop with that right now and we're gonna do the fucking review.
Alright, let's do the review.
Alright, the driver nineteen seventy eight. We see the driver boosting a car from a parking garage, or so it appears that that's what's going on, and then the film cuts.
As one does when you're in a parking garage, you just steal a car. I mean, fuck it.
And the film cuts from that to an illegal gambling hall with the lady from the movie Possession dealing cards with people making other types of bets going on in the background. The film then cuts from that back and forth with him waiting to do his gig while she is cashing out.
out on what I assume is her gig with the card playing.
He parks and waits just before a pig drives by, and when the timing is right, we see the lady head past a security checkpoint, and the driver plows through an alley fenced in.
Area as dudes in hockey masks pull the robbery and immediately dive into the driver's car, all while the lady from possession stares on at the shenanigans and several gawkers also are mesmerized by this sudden crime. The driver speeds off.
Two Bruce.
Bruce Dern shooting pool and looking menacing and young when another person walks in with our first actual dialogue and our first clip.
[Silence]
We got a two eleven in progress.
Progress.
Alright. Southside, near Lincoln.
You call it.
[Music]
Suspects are described to
Four units on their way.
[Silence]
That's him. Yeah. Same goddamn stun he pulled six weeks ago.
Yeah.
You two want to tell me who we're talking about?
شكرا
Shut up, I wanna hear this.
Yeah, tell them.
The end of the clip leads to a chase where the driver has to do some amazing back alley maneuvers to crash a pigmobile.
But more end up on him as we watch him weave and bob his way through alleys and streets and these way too narrow corridors that look like they connect parking garages or are some kind of like small service road tunnel or something like that.
like that. I can't even describe all of it to you, nor do I fucking want to, nor should I, because this is the shit you want to actually experience for yourself. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You just you gotta watch this shit because it's it's to be seen to be believed.
Some really impressive, dangerous city stunt driving here that is worth your fucking time for sure. Yes.
Yes, definitely.
Yeah.
There are several points where the pigs seem to have him all boxed in and are going to make him spin out or fuck up. And then it's revealed he picks them off one by one and sure seems to be just toying with them.
them and fucking bored by this the whole time. Didn't you notice that? Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, he was bored the whole fucking time, man. He just couldn't even cared less.
And it may just be that Ryan O'Neal looks dead behind the eyes and soulless all the fucking time.
He definitely does.
But he looks jaded as fuck and just completely unconcerned by any of this fucking mayhem he is causing, including flipping the pigmobiles over and some truly terrific crashes that are happening here for sure. Yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm talking about like his character looks like that, but Ryan O'Neal, the actual actor, also doesn't look like he has a fucking soul most of the time.
most of the time. No, uh Ryan O'Neill always looks like he's uh you know, but you literally sold his soul to be famous.
Yeah.
Yeah, he has the appearance of the uncanny valley all wrapped up in one place, one face that is both unpleasant and calming all at once.
Yep.
Ha ha ha.
We're just bagging on everybody for their looks, man.
We really are, but we can because
Well you can. I can't.
Oh. I'm gonna keep doing that bit. I'm gonna keep pretending like I'm too gorgeous to
You do that bit like you're you're pretty or something.
Yeah, like I'm too pretty to make fun of people.
It's the best humble it's the best humble brag ever.
You're you're really helping yourself out.
All right, back to the actual review. There are two pig cars the driver seems to be having a hard time ditching, so he ducks into an alley and goes dark to hide out and waits quietly to see if they will get
get passed by, like if you can actually like just hide from them enough to where the cops will just disappear into the background looking for him somewhere else. When the cops still find their way to them in some way, shape, or form, he fires up a game of chicken. And even though they are filling his windshield full of lead,
And the robbers are screaming at him to stop doing this. The completely unaffected, unmoved driver wins the game of chicken with both cops when they both swer.
Oath swerve away.
And dumpsters and just basically being filled with humiliation.
Yeah.'Cause you know, that's what happens.
It's an amazing opening sequence. I've got no notes on that. So much fucking fun so far, and it's only been around like thirteen minutes of fucking screen time. And that's
I mean really the only notes we have is that Ryan O'Neal Must be a soulless press, right?
Right.
Jesus Christ. The cut away from the driver speeding off to the humiliated pigs and our second clip.
[Silence]
Mm-hmm.
Poker Palace first. You call in.

Lucky here.
Cowboy.
No shit.
Well it kinda looks like him to me.
You sure?
Can't say for sure.
What about you?
I just I just didn't get that good look at him.
Yep.
She saw him better tonight.
better than I did. Oh. She did. What do you mean she? On the end. In the black.
Said him? You can take your time because there's no way he can ever get to you.
Absolutely no way.
It was on him.
You sure? Yeah.
It was in him that
How about the rest of ya? Guide dogs for everyone, is that it? Huh?
My line of work is kinda hard to come.
Depends on where you look.
Depends on who you are.
I don't know
Some of the criminal types these days, they uh think that they're real cowboys. Think that they can just uh drive around, do whatever they want to do, whenever they wanna do it. I respect a man that's good at what he does. I'll tell you something else. I'm very good at what I do.
Ah last night. Memory's not too good about last night. I remember every alone in your room. Yeah. You can do better than that. I don't have to Go ahead, fraud!
It'll cost you two years. Go on, you wanna throw it? Go on, go on. Go on. You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna catch the cowboy that's never been caught. Cowboy desperado.
Yeah.
You sure?
Over the door!
It's over a goddamn door! You ass
You ass okay.
So can't you leave out the-
[Silence]
The driver dumps the getaway car during that clip, late at night, in a junkyard, and the next day it is actually hoisted out by the pigs in the clip. At the end of the clip, three menacing dudes do a robbery with a driver who is not our driver, and it's a basic growth.
Grocery store knockover that they barely even fucking pull off.
What an asshole.
It cuts from their sloppy getaway to what appears to be the next day as cars moving along a busy industrial area street are shown. Then the
Camera follows a giant box truck where Bruce Dern is lingering in an alley, which is the worst place to find Bruce Dern lingering. Yeah, that's
Yeah, that's not where you want to see Bruce turn.
Especially not Lincoln.
You don't number one, you don't want him lingering at all. But definitely not in an alley.
the valley. And it's totally a surveillance van as it's revealed to be in our third clip.
Well, well, well. Look at the old man drug in.
What kind of peace did he have?
Forty five.
Right.
Very nice gun.
You know that supermarket's gonna cost you ten years.
Yeah, you know.
Why don't you come on inside?
How about a bear?
Rather than out if that's okay.
Oh, that's okay, bye-bye.
Okay, by you.
Fine by me.
Today's your lucky day.
I'm feeling generous.
I'm gonna give you a choice. You and your bunch are gonna do one more job. A bank. Nice big one.
For free.
You're gonna hire a new driver, that's all.
I don't work with cops.
I wish I hadn't said that.
I hadn't said that.
[Silence]
Terima kasih.
Go on.
Now about this bank. Cash on hand. Two hundred thousand.
That's bait for the man you're gonna hire.
He does no banks.
You set it up in a week or
Yeah.
Sure.
I know all about ten years.
Yes.
Oh, that's a choice.
Do ten years wear in a number?
Or trust me and walk away.
Free. You're getting in pretty deep on this one, aren't you?
My business
Setting up bank jobs. I don't remember that being part of taking the oath. We're getting the money back, Jerkov.
And we're catching somebody that's never been caught.
That's a public service.
[Silence]
How many banks in this city?
Get hit every month.
Oh fifteen.
Fifteen on the average.
Thank you.
We're raising the average.
Pray.
Thank you.
Try to sell that downtown. I sold it to myself, that's enough. I want the cowboy.
You wanna play this your way?
Fine.
You're the boss.
But I'm telling you something. I'm in this for the wind.
You blow this thing and you say goodbye to your bed. You know something? Maybe there's something I ought to investigate in your background, huh? Did you ever think of that? Some little item there?
Maybe there's something about.
Or uh maybe you took a bribe. I wonder how much it costs. You'll just be disappointed.
Uh huh.
Well, I'm not gonna take your word for it, how's it? Listen, I got a wife, I got a kid, and I got twelve years service toward a pension.
Now if you think I'm gonna let you blow that for me, you're crazy. Think about it.
I already have.
Asshole.
I didn't think you'd be the one to pay me.
Amy.
Kind of taking a chance, aren't you?
I'll bear you here if you want it.
Yeah.
Come on up.
I've been paid to do a few things before.
But I was never paid to be an alibi. You're going to ask me why I did it? I have a friend that pays the rent, lives out of town, visits me once or twice a month. Lately the checks haven't been so regular.
I need the money.
Hello? No, I don't think He's on his way up to Sim.
I guess that means I could.
Nice place. Terrific. You. Huh.
You didn't come by to tell me that.
You saw the man who was driving the car, and you saw the man up against the brick wall, and you know it's the same man.
Yet you didn't identify him. Are you afraid of him? No.
No.
Are you afraid of me?
Me.
No, I just don't like it.
It must be because I'm such a good cop, all of you.
Twenty two. I did a little checking.
What else did you check?
Well, a young girl like yourself.
You sure have been around the track a few times, honey, hmm.
Let a real active life.
Get out.
No, we're gonna do a little business, you and I. Look at it. You sure that's not him?
It's not hateful.
Really. Maybe you ought to be afraid of me.
I ran a make on you.
On you.
Clean.
No problem.
Of course there was that...
One little scrape. You remember? The kinda nasty one? The one that got swept under the rug? Oh when your memory improves, honey. Give me a call.
The driver was eavesdropping in on that whole conversation with the pig, as was implied heavily in the clip. And at the end of the clip, when the pig leaves, that actually takes us over the first third of the film. So we're about twenty
nine to thirty ish minutes into the film right now. We've just finished. Yeah.
Good that's that listen, it it goes quick.
Yeah.
I don't know, man. It doesn't go f slow. You you you enjoy yourself watching this movie.
Yeah, and most of this is actually occurring one hundred percent because Bruce Dern's pig character.
Is essentially trying to entrap the driver who he cannot capture any other way, other than breaking the rules and the laws that are helped to be there for protecting the citizens. He violates civil rights of people later on in this film and still.
cannot produce any results with all of that.
Yeah, yeah. Listen, he uh he well he does what typical cops do and that is violate the laws that they claim to be upholding.
to try to get a guilty verdict that shouldn't hold up in any court in the world.
So you know, fun.
Okay.
Yeah, we got up on a soapbox there, but We did.
We did. Yeah. And it's that's the other thing. You know how we always we we're talking about in the last show.
Uh how we dig a hole. We
play chicken. We also do that with our soapbox and we see who's go going to Like stop and then by the time we look down there's no more ground.
It's like we're on a super stacked staircase made up of egg crates and uh soap boxes that we just keep getting higher and higher up until we realize that we need to fall.
Fall.
Why don't we uh go ahead and cut it short then and just move on to the middle act.
I think we should do that.
All right, so the middle act starts with the driver emerging from hiding in the bedroom, and that leads to more dialogue. So therefore that is our fourth clip.
That's how you podcast, man.
This is in fact the only way I can podcast anymore.
This is the only way you should pot anyone should be podcasting, all right? I don't care who you are.
No guarantees.
Never has been.
He might still be down there.
How'd the new girl work out?
She did her job.
Who'd you have pay her off?
I did it myself.
It's not like you.
Why am I here?
Some people want to meet.
They're from downtown.
Done a few jobs.
Shooters.
Yeah.
I told you I don't like guns.
I know, but they're looking to move up. They got their eyes set on something special.
They know my price.
Everybody knows your price.
He even paid me three hundred just to get to you.
I'm okay.
You two know each other? Couple of years ago we worked a two car job. You already have a driver. You don't have the balls for driving anymore. You work for a piece, right? Ten thousand up front. Against fifteen percent.
How do we know you're that good?
The end of the clip is the driver tryout test, where the driver fucking destroys this car to intimidate and somewhat punish those dudes just for questioning him.
Or so it seems. This thrashing goes on for a long fucking time.
He basically just does a bunch of things to destroy the car but still make it usable and it's very fucking impressive and it's intense as fuck.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's insane.
He ends up closing this all out by ripping off the driver's door by just essentially opening it up.
And then backing up until it basically gets broken off, and then goes through a wrongway sign and dips it under a giant fucking log truck, bending up the roof like a motherfucker and scratching the shit out of it too, before screeching to a stop and getting out to
Deliver some fucking dialogue, thankfully, you know. Fifth clip.
It's been too long.
Easy.
Better get new plates if you plan on taking it out again.
People might be looking for you.
You're crazy. We'll make you a deal.
I don't work with people like you.
This plan of yours for our friend.
Gotta be patient, pal.
Every job has its problem. Couldn't be you just figured it wrong.
You know something? I think I'm gonna have to help you with your education. This is the quiet part of the hunt. Trap's all set. Cowboy's out there somewhere.
Wouldn't be any fun if the cowboy just walked right into it, would it?
That'd be no fun. You know what the best part of our job is? It's just a game. It's either them or us. Maybe me and you. Huh, no way, Jose. You're not even in my league. I tell you what though.
I'm a very generous man.
Tell you what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna help you be a better cop. You know how?
You know what you do first thing every morning?
Read the sports page.
You know why?
Best part of the newspaper.
Winners, losers, how it happened, score, Now we got a much better game than the one they give the players.
They don't retire us after ten years.
Just one thing.
You gotta be a player. A real player.
Not just filling out of position.
I guess you figure you're a winner.
That's it. You're a loser. But I think you'd like to be a winner.
And you're gonna show me the way, huh?
Unless of course you turn into a complete asshole first. Let's move.
I just wanna talk.
We need you. You're valuable. I already gave you guys an answer.
We don't like that answer. Be friendly.
Things our way. Go ahead and pull the trigger.
Let's check.
Anything else?
Come back, I'll kill ya.
Just trying to do my job. So am I go home.
Go home.
Just wanted to talk.
Thank you.
Let's talk.
Go ahead. I had a very big problem with your boy.
I mean he's not too thrilled in working with us.
I can understand that.
Jag har inte något att göra det, jag har gjort det som jag kan.
You know what to do.
You just did it.
You came in here.
And ask me to save your ass.
Es lo que voy a hacer.
Save your ass.
Guess I can't leave you alone, can I?
Guess I'm just a real friendly guy. Friend of yours told me where I could find you in the middle of the day.
I don't have any friends. That's right. No friends. No steady job. No girlfriend. You live real cheap, don't ask any questions. Boy, you got it down real tight. So tight there's no room for anything else. That's a real sad song. Only trouble is uh sad song.
Maybe I'm your friend.
present the broad boy founded on the floorboard of some Ford a cowboy boosted.
Go ahead, take it. Save you the trouble of making another one.
I really like Jason.
Sounds like you got a problem.
Uh-huh.
I'm much better at this game than you are. You play against me, pal, you're gonna lose. You win, you make some money. I win. You're gonna do fifteen years.
Years.
How about it, Carver?
[Music]
My price is double.
Who do you think you're dealing with? That's 30% of the take. That's right. Special price because I'm working with second raters.
I'll make a deal.
I want to hear him say it.
Yeah.
One more thing, you're not coming. You don't give many choices, do you, pal?
Two-man job inside. You'll get you cut later. I don't like that's the whole idea. Boy, it's tough to like that man, I tell you. We got him, he's doing the job.
Look, I gotta tell you something. It's very important for you to get this.
Hold up your end of this deal.
Cause if I should see any cops at all in front of that bank, any at all.
It's gonna be a lot of shooting going on.
Listen to me, I don't want any shooting.
Got it? Yeah, I got it.
I just need one thing out of you.
And that's a drop point.
Understand?
Understand?
That way I get my man.
I got the money.
The money gets back to the people it belongs to.
Straighten up your little corduroy jacket. Now piss off. I'm sick of looking at ya.
You really do like the lead, don't you? It's part of the job, pal.
Um
Yeah, it doesn't make things too easy, let me tell you.
Mm-hmm.
A man's afraid of heights.
The end of the clip starts a robbery sequence of the bank that is part of this plan, and the main baddie s shoots the kid in the stomach.
After declaring that he fucked up, he dives into the driver's getaway vehicle and they speed off. It cuts from that to the pig standing around in an abandoned building, and that means more dialogue, thankfully, and our sixth clip.
Oh thank god.
Well you are
Awesome.
And he will. You don't have any doubts, huh?
About our desperado?
About your bad
Yeah.
Boy, you are really an asshole, you know that?
[Silence]
Can't get over the mistake you made.
You've been set up, you know.
That's right.
He's waiting for you right now at the wrong place. Me and my friend don't want to show up. You two hot shots have both been set up, haven't you?
You know what always amazed me about you? A guy with your attitude. Never carries a gun? That's stupid. Very stupid.
At the end of the clip, the driver puts the baddie down and hops in the truck after checking that the money is there.
And then speeds off and that takes us well past the end of the middle act. So we are now two-thirds of the way through this film.
And it's a good point where you see the guy was basically planning on triple crossing and double crossing. He was gonna triple cross the police, he was gonna double cross everybody, kill everyone and make some retirement money from this bank job. It was a
It was a it's gonna be a double cross on a double cross that's already being triple crossed.
And it would have worked if you would have not fucking done a villain fucking monologue.
monologuing so fucking much.
Yeah.
Keep your fucking mouth shut, wait till the guy's not looking, and then fucking draw on him. You don't fucking talk.
Exactly.
If you're gonna double cross somebody, get it fucking done. Make sure they're dead first. And then as they're laying there dying without any way of being able to kill you, then you monologue as they die. That's the badass move, you fucking idiot.
That's that's that's the smart thing. I mean fucking dipshits.
Or just do what the driver did. He literally waited to be able to fucking spring it on the guy, didn't say a fucking word the entire goddamn time, and drove off winning the day at this point. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Th the really things could have been a lot different. It didn't have to be this way.
Yeah. Okay. I'm I'm I'm done bitching about how stupid this guy is. I'm ready to let's finish the film. Let's just knock it.
Uh that's just let's let's let's drive, all right. We have wives waiting for us people. Yeah, that's right. Women married us and sometimes They like to spend time with us.
Not a lot, but sometimes.
Well that's in Matt's case. In my case, my wife loves spending time with me all the time.
Oh fuck off.
awesome.
What? I'm special and wonderful and everybody.
Yeah, you're a special boy.
All right.
All right, so the run to the end of the film starts with the driver loaded with the entrapment robbery cache in the getaway truck, the baddie intent.
intended to use to snag the whole score for himself, as we've already gone over, and then to go on the lambda hide. That two hundred thousand dollars in that year would have been retirement fucking money for a criminal like that. Yeah. Could have set up a good life and just stopped robbing for quite a while. Pretty
Pretty much.
Yeah.
So he was gonna do it. Yeah, he was gonna go run, go on the lamb, hide from the cops and try and build a new life with that two hundred thousand dollars, which means the driver is now positioned to do just that as what he's been trying to do. So
He's the only one of the three men left alive, so he might as well do it.
Might as well get in some of that.
They cut from this to the cops clueless and waiting, and then cut from that to the partner that is still alive that the driver beat the living fuck out of earlier.
Riding a motorcycle to the car swap place.
to find his baddie partner is dead, so he scoots his boots off away from that crime scene.
Yeah, probably for the best. You don't really want to be around there.
They cut from that to a railroad station where the driver drops the money into a paid locker and takes the key and then gets an additional locker key. For some reason, I'm guessing it's to be able to swap out this cash.
We'll know later on. He heads over to a phone booth and makes a call, which we can't hear. Sneaky bastards. I thought we were gonna get a clip there.
I know, right? What what's what's up with that shit?
I'm real surly about that, so then when he heads to a cheap flop house hotel, we actually get a little bit of dialogue and no matter how short it was, that is now our seventh clip.
I want a room.
One night, maybe two.
Five bucks a night.
I'm expecting someone if she shows. Send her right on.
Hey, you want a TV? It's a dollar extra.
I think that's a fair price for a TV.
T V. A dollar extra for a T V? Yeah. No.
After that, he sets up his room including some beer and then sets up a tape player of some sort. This seems like filler, but then they give me dialogue in a cut to the pigs in our eighth clip.
Get on over and keep your eye on our little lady.
Right.
Forget it. I'll put an APB out on all of them. No, you won't.
What the hell are you talking about?
It's tough doing business with low life.
They're unreliable.
We got a few moves left.
Just uh makes the game a little more interesting, that's all. Yeah, well I've been watching your moves.
Moves.
I gotta tell ya, I'm not all that impressed.
Thank you.
No shit.
We got a mutiny with this man here.
Thank you.
You're still on my team.
And I am your manager.
You do exactly what I tell you to do.
Search us up.
Now you talk.
Terima kasih.
What about the other two?
You better stay out of sight for a while.
There's a cop trying to put this one on me. The money's hot. I want to trade it in. Exchange.
Exchange rate's four to one at best. I'll take.
I'll take it.
The train station, nine o'clock. That's Sandwich Counter by the lockers.
I don't like it.
I didn't think it would.
I'll set it up. But they won't do it if you're there. Tonight you'll be hotter than the cache.
I'll get somebody.
Keep your eye out for those other two. They'll know I have their money.
I told ya, I'm not gonna get killed for ya.
Room three oh oh four.
Mm-hmm.
I don't know where he is, I haven't seen him.
Just tell me what you want.
I just set things up.
It's his business what happens after that.
If it was jewelry or bonds, he might come to me.
But with cash he doesn't need me.
I won't see him till the next one.
The Durant. The money's in a locker at the train station. Nine o'clock is trading for smaller bills. That's all.
That's all.
Why told him I wouldn't get killed for it?
Oh yeah?
Sure.
They cut from this revenge killing to the card player lady from possession showing up at the driver's flop house room in our ninth clip.
Hmm. Now this is podcasting.
You don't have to play.
Everything goes all right.
[Silence]
I see it through.
[Music]
I think you're crazy.
[Music]
Put the key in a safe deposit box for six months.
Then go get the money.
I'm on a streak.
I'm gonna play it out. I'm gonna get it tonight.
I know all about streaks.
Every player says this time is different.
[Music]
Maybe we are alike.
No. When I lose I just go broke.
You go to jail.
[Music]
If it wasn't for that cop, I tell you to go ahead.
He's the reason I've got the rush on him.
[Music]
You don't care about the money.
Might even send it to him.
Sucker's game.
[Music]
You think Maybe.
You could wait.
For a while.
It cuts from this to the card player at the train station getting the cash and being followed by the pigs. Her actions are narrated over the phone by one of the pigs, so that automatically has to be our tenth class.
Tenth click. Coffee.
[Silence]
Right back from my chain.
Yeah.
[Silence]
Well, he's about 27, 28 years old. He's a punk.
Yeah.
Looks like they just switched keys.
Yeah, he's going back to the lockers, right?
He's wearing one of those cowboy suits.
Got a beard, a real sleezo.
He's exchanging the bag.
Black at test shake is.
Yeah. Dirty money for cleaning.
Yeah, he's moving headed for the platform.
He's coming your way.
Right, I'll stick with him.
That guy hops a train and so does Bruce Stern's character, while the pig on the phone loses the guy that was grabbing that case. The train search starts and Bruce demands to see in people's bags without any right or proper cause. Violation Yeah.
Yeah, well, I mean that's what they do.
This sparks the kid with the cash to dump the stash and grab a different bag and act really suspicious all the while doing it. But somehow Bruce Stern's character does not see him at all.
No, no, I mean why would he? Come on. What are you doing?
Bruce Dern violates multiple rights f of the civilians around him. Well, that's going to be our 11th clip.
Thank you.
Продолжение следует...
Police, we're checking all the luggage.
Yeah.
Just a minute.
Not just a minute. Now.
Yeah.
[Silence]
What the hell are you trying to-
Trying to
Sous-titrage ST' 501
That's not mine!
[Silence]
Is that your cool? Is it yours?
Did you have one? Yeah, where's a bag? It's up here. Where?
Where?
It's gone.
Was it light brown?
Yeah, that's right, man.
[Silence]
You okay, lady?
A man took my purse.
He's got the key.
He ran to the other side of the station.
[Silence]
There.
Alright, we got trouble. Go!
Go!
Go, go!
The end of the clip kicks off a driver face off as our driver uses that kick-ass old pickup to hound a muscle car that has the remaining baddie in it and a bad Tiger Stripe paint job.
Terrible.
This chase sequence is super intense and has some truly breathtaking shots of car POV in slides and avoiding collisions. The stunt drivers involved in this sequence do some truly masterful stunts and turns. This is just some
Seriously amazing stuff. You gotta watch this. I don't even want to fucking try and describe it. It's incredible. No, you
No, you've gotta just watch it please. It's just the best.
And I'm not gonna describe all of it, but I'll describe some certain parts here coming up here. So the chase runs through
Through everything, including a train depot, warehouse, and parking structures. There is a constant set of spin-outs and immediate recoveries as the truck can't really get an advantage on the muscle car because it has a little bit more acceleration, but the driver's
skill constantly gets to where he's spinning that car out or finding a way to get to where he can fuck up that driver because he's a better driver than him, but the vehicle can't keep up. And that is what makes it really cool is that sort of cat and mouse game they have to play. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, the m it's the it's the uh uh uh uh let's catch'em, let's get'em. Uh uh any anything like this is always you need a good cat and mouse sequence.
And it has to bump up the suspense.
Yeah, but they're doing this through the aisles of a giant warehouse with like piles and piles of stuff and like shelves piled up, like the multiple stacks of things where pallets are put on shelves and then multiple shelves really high up.
To where if they hit any of this stuff, it's gonna be really damaging to the cars, the people inside of it and everything else around it because it's gonna become one huge mess. Like it
Yeah. Exactly.
Exactly. Super dangerous shit what they're doing here. And it's all actually there because they couldn't fake that shit that easy back then.
No, no, this is...
This is definitely something that uh you actually just had to do'cause yeah, they there's no CGI for this.
Well, the warehouse chase actually slows down and then devolves into more of a cat and mouse hunting like we were talking about. But at this point they're actually moving slow and trying to be quiet.
Quiet to see if they can hear the other person to know how to get away. And this whole sequence of that like style of hunting is scored with this odd freeform jazz trumpeting that is over a resonating like.
Sort of synth score that sounds like the score from the Warriors. And this does not quite work with me the way that they did that. It does not work for me very much.
Yeah.
Warriors.
Warriors come out and play.
Bye.
The sequence ends with the baddies wanting to leave finally, and the driver is by the only exit ready to play some serious chicken once again. The muscle car guy swerves and flips the
car and while injured both baddies can crawl free from the car. The driver gets the drop on the leftover baddie and tells him to give up.
That guy does not. So as soon as he even raises his gun, the driver just blasts someone dead. The other driver that was in the competition here basically says he was only the driver for this guy. He wants nothing else to do with this shit. He hands over the
purse and is sent packing by our driver. The card player and the driver share a glance and the movie cuts from that to them getting off of a bus in our final clip.
You okay?
Yeah. I'll see you in a couple of minutes.
[Silence]
What happened?
Looks like we both got swindled.
Looks like we both got ripped off.
By the exchange man.
Lot of crooks around these days.
Sure you don't want to keep this?
Driver, are you sure you don't want to keep this?
At the end of the clip, Bruce Dern walks out with the bag no one else wants and drops it square in the middle of that entrance area on his way out of the door, and they roll those fucking credits.
[Silence]
Oh man, Driver was not anything near what I was thinking it was going to be. There was significantly more crime spree planning and uh discussion and then also a lot of
lot more like intrigue with the cops trying to entrap the guy and violating civil rights and all of that. It was more of like a just straight up crime thriller that just so happened to have some major kick ass driving in it, you know? Yeah.
Exactly. And it was awesome.
Awesome. Yeah, I'm here for driving. Yeah, I'm here for this fucking movie all day, dude. The driver was really well done.
And you know what? Really? Some even good suspense. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. I totally agree. There's plenty of moments where you're like, is he going to be able to pull this off? How's this going to
work. All right. So I started reading the Parker novels, which were the uh kind of influence on Mel Gibson's payback and a couple of other types of films throughout the years, but like the payback that Mel Gibson is the one that kind of brought me into the world of Parker.
Yeah. This this movie The Driver reminds me very much about those gritty crime novels. So when I say noir, I fucking mean it like this has serious grit crime thriller cred all the way through it. And on top of that, it has some really
kick ass fucking driving and stunts that are just simply breathtaking to the point where we don't even have the balls to try and describe them to you from memory. Yeah.
Yeah. No, yeah, no. Fucking I wouldn't even try that shit. What are you t kidding me?
Yeah.
Is worth it for those sequences alone. And on top of that, you've got a really kick-ass fucking crime thriller and like a lot of intrigue and suspense on top of that. It's pretty well done all around. And it doesn't ever really stop.
to the point where you're like it never really gets boring on either of front, right? Like No.
No, yeah.
Yeah. When they start getting into the crime thriller stuff and it's all dialogue and all of that st and you're you're stuck with the intrigue and you're wondering how is this gonna play out? Is he gonna realize what's gonna happen? Is the
Driver we're following gonna be safe because we're supposed to root for him or what have you. Like while you're getting into that, right about the point when you're like, Man, I really wish they would do some more driving. What's going on with this? They already give it to you. Like it's balanced really well. The the tone balance.
Yeah it does.
Yeah, it does. It uh it has uh it has a great um Great momentum that it doesn't interrupt.
Yeah, that's a great way to put it. I agree with you there. It's got great momentum for things. It just keeps building and it ratchets up the tension and then the driving gets more intense and more dangerous and more insane the more trouble he's in.
He's in.
Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, and he's and he's always in trouble.
And his face never fucking even looks like he's even concerned or worried when he's behind the wheel.
the wheel. Yep, no, not even a little bit, because he has no soul behind those ho horrid, horrid eyes.
Something real bad happened to the driver.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Something real bad happened to Ryan O'Neal.
Ha ha ha!
Ha ha.
Oh, I should have never gave you license to pick on that poor man'cause now it's just never gonna end.
Fuck it. Well he's fine.
Yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure he's just fine.
He gives no fucks about what we have to say at all.
No, no, no. D this guy he's like you supposed to think w what, a bunch of fucking nerds have a problem with me? Like I give a shit.
A fucking Ryan O'Neill. I don't even have a soul to care.
Oh Jesus Christ.
All right.
All right, I'm gonna cut that off right now. We're gonna take the break here. We're gonna play the show fucking housekeeping. And when we come back, we will have much better things to say about Ryan O'Neal. And we will have music
That's going to make love to you. It's gonna marry you. The music is gonna be so good, you're gonna be married to it. That's it.
That is a PSYOP guarantee.
This is the last time you could do this bit is this episode.
I'm sorry.
This is fucking awful.
Well, it's the last time we're playing music in the episode, so
If I have to do that just to get you to stop with this bit, I will. I will turn this podcast around, so help me and drive us right back home.
We will go right back home.
We're gonna take the break now, we're gonna play the show housekeeping, and then we're gonna have the fucking music that Matt won't stop fucking lying about and then hopefully when we get back
We will.
We will not be disparaging Ryan O'Diel.

[Music]
That was all the stuff that I said that was gonna happen. Now let's hope that the thing that I was hoping will happen will happen and that we'll stop disparaging Ryan O'Neill.
Oh my god, I'm not even disparusing him. I feel bad for him. It's gotta be rough being a fucking soulless husk of a human.
You're gonna get a suit.
How?
How?
[Silence]
Ha ha.
Yeah, what's the discovery gonna look like in that?
What they said you had no soul. Can you prove you have a soul? I don't think you can. There you go.
Oh Jesus Christ, this just keeps getting worse. Well while you're out there wondering whether or not we're gonna have action brought against us, kick the fuck out of this week and make it your bit.

[Silence]
It's the implication. The role is implied.
The implication.
Jesus Christ.
I can't keep making that joke'cause it's gross.
It is, it's so gross. It's the implication.
We're not gonna do anything, but it's an implication.
Six.
It's gross, but that's probably why it's so fucking funny.
All right, let's get started episode uh five forty five.

Uh they cut for
They cut from the driver speeding off to of the humil uh they cut from the driver, speeding off away from the humiliat They cut away from the driver speeding off.

Backwards talk must die all times.
Yeah.
There isn't gonna be any next time.
Hmm?
Mm-hmm.
You were late.
Uncertain am I doing quotes right?
[Silence]
Yeah, for sure.
On the end.
Oh shit, that was a really big hit.
How about the rest of ya?
Yeah, stay uh drive around.
No, it's okay. I'll just adjust the text so it's even bigger.
Yeah.
You'll be alright. So hard. All these clips.
It is when you're the one that has to play everything, mix everything around, get everything out, read everything down.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, I I understand.
Even when you're doing your notes, I'm still playing your clips.
That's true, you were a Good time for me.
Very nice.
He's just
It's escape.
No that supermarket's gonna cost you
I'm uh I'm very happy with how things are going right now, man.
Yeah, dude, I'm the more I realize all the like multitasking weird crazy shit that I'm capable of doing and like how I do hyperfixate on things Yeah, yeah.
I do. Yeah, you get nicked by it.
Yeah, I definitely feel like I have been.
But yeah it might have some of the tism. Yeah.
Yeah, but you do. I mean as somebody who's no need's had a touch of something wrong with him.
Yeah.
Sixth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade? Yeah, trust me, you got you you definitely got something. But almost everyone I know who I'm friends with like like close friends with, you all got a touch of it. Or I think that's the only reason why we all hang out. No one else really wants to deal with us. So
That's possible.
We all hang out because we all got a bit of it.
Thank you.
This is a four minute clip, so Some of my clips were like nine and ten minutes of screen time'cause then it's down to like
Right.
Minutes. Yeah. I just recorded all dialogue. Yeah.
[Silence]
Yeah, yeah.
I don't like it.
I know, but they're looking to move up. They got their eyes set on something special.
Looking to move up!
No, it's moving on up to the east.
Move it on that true.
Thank you.
Listen, I was just trying to get any song I can out of that.
That kind of uh auditory trigger thing is also when you're touched a little bit with the ADHD or something.
Yeah.
Definitely.
I didn't know you that good.
Good. And I I do that all the goddamn time. Right.
Right. Same.
Uh I know. I just experienced it.
Same yeah, all the time.
That was great.
It's been too long.
I hope I get a good fade in for that. That'd be great. So this is four minutes. The wife just got home, so I'm gonna have to I'm gonna start speeding up a little bit, but not bad.
We'll get it taken care of.
She's probably gonna want to take a nap.
Listen, I need to have a cigar and a beer.
and then another cigar and another beer
I'm not the best part ever. Yeah.
Ja.
Then you gotta have a whiskey.
Well that I usually just keep it to one one cigar. But yeah, I might whisk a whiskey in there with a couple of beers.
Then a whiskey drink, and then a vodka drink.
Yeah you want to talk about it. And then a cider drink.
Yeah.
You know how?
I'll see the songs that remind me of the good times.
What's funny is I was telling Bev about how we uh did that that joke for every time about Godzilla gets knocked down or it gets back up again.
She was so good.
She was so disappointed that that was what I kept using for the Godzilla series.
I wanted to show you.
She's like, Cort, he's like your favorite, and you use that? I'm like, Yeah, but we thought it was funny.
Yeah I'm surprised we didn't do that for like all the Jason movies we watched got knocked out.
We have actually not done a lot of Jason movies. We've only done a small.
We have we did take some lives, right?
[Silence]
Oh, I thought we did Jason Lives once.
No, I think we only did two. We might have done a commentary or something for somebody. Alright, we're back in.
I called it when she got my text that I'm still recording with you.
Yep, you I mean you had it.
I can't say I blame her, it's fucking Sunday.
Sunday.
I quite literally waited until my neighbor next door who never mows as long because he works like eighty hours a fucking week.
Yeah.
Did his lawn and then once he mowed his lawn then I mowed my front lawn.
Ha ha ha.
Pretty much that's kinda I do that too and everyone around me is kinda mowed. But my lawn doesn't look as bad'cause I mowed more recently than they all had, so
I sh I should still be alright. Yeah.
Well that's kinda what happened with me is like I mowed before all of the rainstorms hit and like mowed really, really down. Yeah. So then while everybody else had to like scramble to mow, I had plenty of time. And it wasn't until my neighbor who really let it go for a really long time
Again, because he works so fucking hard.
The guy with your ass.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Ever carries a gun.
Yeah, yeah.
Did his that I was like.
Now you can tell'cause he got his shape real close.
I didn't have to write that fucking note.
I got it.
Yeah, but you still did it.
It's almost like I purposely want to rearrange words in a way that make people have to think more directly about how I'm writing it.
Interesting. Instead of like how I'm going to be saying,
Not all that trust.
Trust.
Please.
I think you you have things in your head and you know what you wanna do um and then you fuck it up. And I
You're still on my team.
But everything I'm saying is accurately describing what it is that I'm seeing. It's just that I'm just Yeah.
Ah yeah.
That's true.
True.
It's not that it's grammatically incorrect, it's just socially awkward.
Oh, this isn't even two minutes. I can wait that long.
I don't have that beta ADHD. I'm not the kile.
It's great in you already, I can hear it.
Does this mean the robot overlords will let me live'cause I can communicate with them?
I don't know what he is.
It means they'll kill you faster.
Because I understand them. Yeah, that makes sense.
Yeah, they don't want any of that.
Quick death! Quick death! Quick death! Yes!
[Silence]
My teeth are not grinding Matt. I made it. I waited the whole minute and a half.
I'm I'm so proud of you.
Thank you.
You're my special boy?
He's about twenty-seven, twenty-eight years old. He's a punk. Yeah, he's going back.
I'm not sure which one of those phrases I want to be applied to me more these days. He looks like he's twenty seven, twenty eight years old, or that he's a punk.
Yeah, no, I agree. I I I want the twenty seven twenty.
Yeah, you want the youth. I'm I'm more of like the if people would still think I'm punk at this age, that'd be great.
Yeah, that's true. Yeah, that is something you more you want.
Bruce Dern's totally the kind of cop who will constantly have problems with his body cam.
Yeah. Oh yeah yeah. No, I don't know why that recording.
He dances with-

Yeah, yeah. Okay. What they said you had no soul. Can you prove you have a soul? I don't think you can. There you go.
Oh Jesus Christ, this just keeps getting worse. Well while you're out there wondering whether or not we're gonna have action brought against us, kick the fuck out of this week and make it your bitch.
He does seem like the kind of guy who Google his name, maybe uh
Oh Jesus Christ.
I need to stop this fucking recording. Uh my head hurts from giggling like a stupid kid.
Oh good stuff.
Yeah.
Hmm. Recording stopped.
