What is The State - A Podcast from The State News + Impact 89FM?

The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.

Speaker 1:

Hi, and welcome to the state. I'm your host, Rebecca McEvoy. Today's date is 11/11/2025. The forecast predicts there'll be a cold day with a high of being 36 and a low of being 33. This date brings you the stories that matter.

Speaker 1:

Twenty twenty five Lansing model train show and sale arrives at Farm Bureau Pavilion on Sunday, November 9. The twenty twenty five Lansing train show and sale took place at the Farm Bureau Pavilion, sponsored by the Lansing model railroad club. The event hosted over 500 tables of new and used trains for sale, along with nine layouts, making it the largest train show and sale in Michigan. Record secretary for LMRC, Michael Friesel, said the club itself has existed for decades. This event, Friesel said, serves as a fundraiser for the club, with this year being the fiftieth year.

Speaker 1:

Since its start, Friesel said the event has grown tremendously. Frazil said there are now 3,000 people or more attending the event along with many different vendors from all over. Former MSU softball coach follows her lifelong passion for teaching. When Doctor. Diane Olabari walked onto MSU's campus in 1975, she carried with her not just the ambition of a young softball coach but also a vision for what women's sports could become.

Speaker 1:

In 1975, Ula Barri joined Michigan State University, taking on coaching duties for field hockey in fall and softball in the spring. The challenges were immediate and concrete: limited funding, little institutional support, and teams that often had to travel long distances on their own. Despite the hurdles, her teams excelled under her guidance. In 1976, the softball team won the AIAWASA national tournament, marking a defining moment for women's athletics at MSU. The following year, they returned to the national stage and placed third in the country.

Speaker 1:

Four Spartans double in figures power 92 to 60 MSU victory. Late in the second quarter, senior guard, Emma Schumat, punched the floor in frustration after failing to secure a loose ball before it rolled out of bounds. Her visible anger, despite her team holding a comfortable lead, embodied the defensive intensity that Michigan State women's basketball head coach Robin Fralick demands from her squad. An aggressive ball hawking defense turned a 19 of fifteen first quarter lead for the number 23 Spartans into a 92 to 60 win, securing its second victory of the season by taking down Eastern Michigan. MSU volleyball hopes to continue momentum and matchup against Washington.

Speaker 1:

In East Lansing, Michigan State volleyball traveled to the University of Washington this past Friday looking to seek a win over the Huskies. The Spartans are coming off a win against the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights, coming out on top in three sets. This victory improves their record to 16 to six overall and six to six in Big Ten play. The game ended in a win for the Spartans three to one.
