The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we welcomed a guy who's all about everything indie of all types in Seattle. Nate Louis runs a great podcast called Raised On Rhythm (not to mention some great Seattle-centric playlists), and we're honored to have him doing the selection tonight as our guest artist selector.

Show Notes

As broadcast March 11, 2022 with plenty of independence and verve for your podcast exp.  "Welcome to radio station Exp."  Tonight we welcome a very peculiar gentleman and one that when you talk to him, you know he absolutely loves music.  Nate Louis is a busy guy.  While drumming for several bands and projects around Seattle, he's also the host and creator of the Raised On Rhythm podcast along with being a great promoter of the scene in his city.  His Spotify playlists are also great if you'd like to stray from the beaten path with Emerald City bands.  Just a great guy to talk music with and his enthusiasm is obvious in every syllable.

Talk Talk – It’s My Life
The Drop has officially started things tonight. Thrilled to have Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding do the honors on our opening for the show this evening. Danno here, remember me? I came in a little late tonight, but right on time for our guest artist selector this evening in Nate Louis, who joins us in hour 2 tonight. Nate is the newly added drummer for Seattle band Forest Ray and is the host of an outstanding behind the music podcast called Raised On Rhythm, to which I am definitely a faithful listener. Just a great guy to talk music and the bands of Seattle who are on the grind and not playing mega gigs or on the radio (yet). He also does some killer playlists on Spotify as well, with our favorite being Seattle Bands Who Aren’t Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses or Sunny Day Real Estate so do check that out.
For right now though, we just started by letting the God of Seattle rock do the honors on the intro tonight, that was a pair of tunes that started Jimi Hendrix’s sophomore LP Axis: Bold As Love, released in 1967. The Experience had a great surrealist touch on the openers for their last two albums.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s get to some more indie and rock stuff from Seattle to warm up for the Raised On Rhythm takeover tonight in hour 2. For starters we’ll go with Acid Tongue and Shaina Shepherd then follow with Smokey Brights and Spirit Award, all of which we’ll do the verbosity after they let the sorcery run around in the atmosphere for the next 10 minutes or so. THIS is The Drop on your Raised On Rhythm Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop and into the final mic spit sesh for tonight’s part 1. Danno here on a tut tut it looks like rain kinda night here in Gwangju, and cometh the rain cometh the emerald city presence as Nate Louis joins us from Seattle tonight for a playlist curation in hour 2. Do check his playlists on Spotify along with his excellent music-focused podcast Raised On Rhythm, both very good stuff. For right now, let’s explain ourselves on the selections just aired…
Acid Tongue feat Shaina Shepherd – Suffering For You (…a tune from last year’s Arboretum LP by Acid Tongue. Both of these artists are two favorites of our guest tonight Nate Louis, and we’ll hear from both of them separately along with another tune from Arboretum in hour 2.)
Smokey Brights – Honey Eye (…a band is fronted by the married duo of Kim West and Ryan Devlin. This is a hat tip to Nate’s Band’s That Are Not Fleet Foxes etc playlist, which is such good stuff. Do check that playlist out, and this band. They’re sweet. This was a standalone single from last year, by the way.)
Spirit Award – Lily of the Valley (…another LP from last year, this one being called Lunatic House. We’ll give the band a little more playlist time tonight in hour 2 when Nate tells us why he totally adores this band.)
Now let’s get to our final two joints for first fourth this evening, and we’ll get into the new & old of Seattle rock. Up next is Pills by Beverly Crusher, who we shall also hear more from after 9pm with Nate Louis, and then we have something called Throb by Skin Yard, which is a very underappreciated grunge predecessor. THIS is The Drop on your Seattle underground Friday night.
Beverly Crusher – Pills
Skin Yard – Throb

II
The Drop returns for tonight as we have cold opened the 2nd quarter can of our Seattle under the radar exploration committee with guest artist selector Nate Louis. For those unfamiliar and/or just now getting with the program, he is the newly added drummer for Seattle band Forest Ray who we’ll hear from shortly and the host of a great podcast you should definitely check out called Raised On Rhythm. For right now, we just kicked off the slow burn 2nd stanza a little bit country and folk...
Hallways – All You Have To Do ( …this is another married couple band out of Seattle. The duo of Grant and Steph Burton formed the group in 2007, and spent several years in NYC before moving back to the Pacific Northwest where they say they “ live happily amongst the trees, birds and mountains” and it certainly sounds like that.)
Gabriel Mintz – Western Days ( …another appreciator of nature, although not much else I can glean from the artist. He says in his bio he is a mammal native to North America, although we also know he’s native to Seattle, and this tune came out in 2010.)
Now before we exit the green kingdom of nature, remember….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
Moving ahead, we’ve got one of our favorite dreamers from Seattle up next who were past guests on a Friday of yore in Night Hikes (big uppppp) and then we have the aforementioned Forest Ray to be followed by veteran rocker Tomo Nakayama. We’ll talk about all of this after all of that is played, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with Nate Louis.
____________
The Drop recommissions for one final time as we begin the end of part 2 tonight, Danno here, doing what I do GFN HQ, and our guest artist selector for tonight representing Seattle to the fullest is Nate Louis. Great guy to talk music with and even better at selecting playlists, he’ll join us in hour 2. Do check his Raised On Rhythm podcast and his playlists on the spot with all the music. For right now though, let’s get to the recap...
Night Hikes – Raven (…one of our favorite dreamies who now call Seattle home, this tune dropped as a standalone in 2020. The band is the duo of Olivia Godby and Matthew Farrell, and are the key to having me link up with Nate, so big up for that and just generally everything, you two.)
Forest Ray – Always (…this is from before the band added our guest artist selector for tonight Nate Louis to play drums for them. Their latest couple of singles do feature him on the sticks, and we’ll hear their latest couple of tunes from this year in part 3 tonight when Nate joins us.)
Tomo Nakayama – Free to Go (…a shape-shifting veteran of the music scene in Seatlle, this tune is from the artist’s latest LP Melonday which was released in 2020. KEXP once noted that stalwart of the Seattle scene applies better to nobody else, so high praise from the locals who truly know.)
So, we’re about to make the jump to part 3 and our feature for tonight, but first it’s time for another taste from a married music act and the makers of the aforementioned KEXP Listener Choice Album of the Year for 2020 in Deep Sea Diver. We’ll close with a brilliant bit of face melt that almost sneaks up on you called eyes are red don’t be afraid, which is just one of the many reasons that the Impossible Weight LP was given this prestigious title for the year prior to last. THIS is The Drop and that’s a wrap on the first half.
Deep Sea Diver – Eyes Are Red (Don’t Be Afraid)
