Welcome to Daily Ethics of our Fathers. Today's pearl of wisdom comes from Pirkei Avot, Chapter 1, Mishnah 2:
Shimon the Righteous was among the last surviving members of the Great Assembly. He used to say: The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of God, and deeds of kindness.
Imagine a three-legged stool. Each leg is essential for balance and function. Just so, our world rests upon three pillars: Torah study, divine service, and acts of lovingkindness. Torah study shapes our minds and souls, divine service connects us to our Creator, and acts of lovingkindness weave the fabric of human community. Remove one, and the balance is lost.
In our daily hustle, remember to learn something meaningful, connect with the Divine in your unique way, and perform a simple act of kindness. These are not grandiose actions reserved for the extraordinary; they are small, daily deeds that uphold the very essence of our world.
When life feels unstable, consider which leg of the stool you might strengthen. Perhaps it's time to attend a class, spend a few quiet moments in prayer, or help a neighbor in need. Each action is a step towards restoring balance, both in our personal lives and in the world at large.
