Ancient Cat Society – City Breathes
Furrows – Mirrors
Melt – Hours
Sir Was – I Don’t Think We Should Wait
Sir Was – Spend A Lifetime
PART 1 FACTS
Talking Heads – Psycho Killer (Live)
- On this date in 1984, Stop Making Sense opened in theaters. A highly unconventional film that doesn't rely on crowd shots or backstage footage, it's hailed as a triumph of the genre.
- Conceived by frontman David Byrne, Talking Heads made their 1983 tour supporting their Speaking In Tongues album an immersive and somewhat unsettling visual experience, with Byrne incorporating a series of unpredictable stage moves into his performances: he plays a gunshot victim in "Psycho Killer," smacks himself in the head during "Once In A Lifetime," and slithers like a jellyfish for "Life During Wartime." The four members of the band are augmented by another five, including two backup singers and P-Funk keyboard man Bernie Worrell. Everyone wears muted colors so nothing reflects - the mic stands and drum risers are painted black.
Ancient Cat Society – City Breathes
- This is a trio out of Houston consisting of Sergio Trevino, Haley Lynch and Austin Sepulvado.
- The members met as part of another local band, and this is part of their album which was originally set for release late this year, but no info on exactly when or the title that I can find.
Furrows – Mirrors
- This is the solo projet of Peter Wagner, who is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who now resides on-and-off in between NYC & Baltimore.
- We highlighted a tune called Wasteland a couple of weeks ago and now the debut album Fisher King is out as of last Friday, which is getting lots of love especially from indie curator David Dean Burkhardt. And deservedly so, go check it out. Nice LP!
Melt – Hours
- This is a band I believe we’ve featured previously who are all from New York. The sextet released the West Side Highway EP in February, which they say many critics marked as a maturation of their sound. However, the band doesn’t know what that means, and notes that they still hold hands when crossing the street.
Sir Was – I Don’t Think We Should Wait
Sir Was – Spend A Lifetime
- Joel Vastberg of Sweden aka Sir Was is out with his latest LP, his 2nd in three years and almost to the day of his full-length debut. An album that deals with the precious moments we share on this planet and in life generally, a rumination on his own dire diagnosis of having a rare genetic disease.
- The album is called Let The Morning Come, and just dropped Friday.
PART 2 SONGS
Mr. Twin Sister – Ballarino
Tinlicker Feat Nathan Nicholson - Be Here And Now
Mandolynne - SCREAM
Nico De Andrea - Woman (Fka Mash Afro Glitch) [feat Mopao Mumu]
Lura & Ruggiero - Leaving My Life
Jaws of You - Money
PART 2 FACTS
Mr. Twin Sister – Ballarino
- We started off Part 2 with some electronic vibes courtesy of Mr. Twin Sister. Mr. Twin Sister is a quartet from New York. Just last week, they announced that they will release a new album, which will be their first new album since 2018.
- The new album is entitled “Al Mundo Azul” and it will drop on November 19th.
- Lead singer Estrella says that this song is all about having access to a smartphone and being completely addicted to it, depending on it for everything and constantly having it held up to your face at all times.
Tinlicker Feat Nathan Nicholson - Be Here And Now
- Tinlicker is a Dutch house and techno duo and they have a very tasty new track for us that comes via Anjunadeep, which if you didn’t know already, is a very good house music label.
- I like this track a lot, it’s house, but its moody and brooding, leaning a bit more into the darker side of things.
- The track features the vocals of Nathan Nicholson, who is based in London. He says that the message of being here and now is one that he holds very near and dear to his heart. He lost his mom at the age of 18 so he says that he is always remembering the past and things lost but he has grown to learn to never forget to focus on living life in the present.
Mandolynne – SCREAM
- Mandolynne is a trip hop artist from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
- This track is pretty heavy and Mandolynne has a pretty heavy life story as well. She grew up in the foster care system and later lived into what police refer to as a “sex cult”. Her new track “Scream” is about her personal experiences with sexual assault.
- Musically, the track is super solid. Very well produced and shouts out to David Bottrill on the mix. His resume includes artists like Tool and Peter Gabriel, and you can hear the quality all over this Mandolynne track for sure.
Nico De Andrea - Woman (Fka Mash Afro Glitch) [feat Mopao Mumu]
- Nico De Andrea is a huge electronic artist. He is from France and he’s had releases on some big-name labels such as Spinnin Records, Ultra Music, Armada Music and Axtone. A few weeks ago, he released the original version of this track “Woman”.
- On tonight’s show we have the remix by South African producer, Fka Mash Afro Glitch.
- The track is all about celebrating the strength of independent women. Musically, what can I say, I believe the technical term is “super dope”.
Lura & Ruggiero - Leaving My Life
- Lura & Ruggiero are a disco duo from France. Their new cut comes to us via Sidekick Music.
- This track is sort of like their “coming out of quarantine” track. They wrote it while they were locked down.
- It’s kind of introspective and reflective, but it’s also kind of hopeful and overall, it’s got positive message and some catchy instrumentation. Very strong track from this rising French duo.
Jaws of You – Money
- Jaws of You is the moniker of Anthony Rainville. He is an artist based in LA. He was part of various bands in the past but just this past August, he started releasing solo work independently.
- “Money” is his third single to date, and it is a very catchy, and upbeat tune.
- The song is called money but it’s not really about money. It’s actually about how love is more valuable than money and how all the money in the world won’t mean much if you have no one to share it with.
PART 3 SONGS
Eades – Reno
Sunflower Bean - Baby Dont Cry
Lola in Slacks - Luna Moth
Humble Braggers - So Alive
Miss Leading - Self Help
Hiatus Kaiyote - Canopic Jar
PART 3 FACTS
Eades – Reno
- Eades is back on the show with a new single. Eades is a band from Leeds and their new track “Reno” comes to us via Heist or Hit.
- Kind of an interesting song. It is about someone attempting to break themselves and everyone else out of a boring life by committing arson.
- The story is told from three different perspectives, the witness, the perp, and the social commentator. We of course don’t condone arson, but I kind of get the image the band is illustrating for us with this song.
Sunflower Bean - Baby Dont Cry
- Sunflower Bean is an indie-rock trio from New York City.
- They released an EP back in 2019 entitled “King of the Dudes” and the track on tonight’s program is only their second new single since that EP.
- Anyway, I think the song is pretty rockin’. Subject-wise, the song is about the disposable nature of content in the digital age and how our connection to the outside world is basically filtered through a screen these days.
Lola in Slacks - Luna Moth
- Lola in Slacks is a quintet fronted by Louise Reed and the band hails from Glasgow.
- “Luna Moth” is their latest single. The track is taken from their forthcoming new 9-track album.
- I think Lou Reed has a really interesting singing voice. I was instantly drawn to the song because of it.
- The album is entitled “Moon Moth”, it will be released on October 22nd and it will come via Last Night From Glasgow.
Humble Braggers - So Alive
- Humble Braggers is an indietronica quartet from Buffalo. “So Alive” is their latest single and it comes ahead of their very soon to be released new album. The album is entitled “Love & Fear” and it will be released on November 11th.
- I think this new track is a pretty easy-going retro synth pop offering. The band definitely has a pretty cohesive sound so if you like the track on tonight’s show, definitely check out the new album when it drops.
Miss Leading - Self Help
- This song is so cool. I think it is really just fun and sort of hilarious actually.
- Miss Leading is the moniker of Nadia Freeman. She is an artist based in New Zealand. She dropped an album earlier this year called “Minor Thing” and this “Self Help” track is now being released as a promo single ahead of her upcoming New Zealand tour.
- I say this song is funny because it is basically a sort of commentary on the whole self-help and wellness industry. It’s full of cliches, the beat is bouncy and bubbly, I think it’s just a very cool track overall.
Hiatus Kaiyote - Canopic Jar
- Hiatus Kaiyote is a quartet based in Melbourne. “Canopic Jar” is their newest track and it is the first new music we are hearing from them since the release of their album “Mood Valiant” in June.
- Just in time for the coming of Halloween, this new track has a sort of Halloween theme. If you are wondering about the title of the song, a “Canopic Jar” is an ancient artifact from Egypt.
- When the ancient Egyptians prepared a body for mummification, they kept all the internal organs in a canopic jar. Pretty cool stuff.

PART 4 SONGS
Nora Lilith – Wake
Dream Dream - Chill Vibes
Cousin Kula - Now That You’re Gone
Sprints - Modern Job
Semi Trucks - Motorbike Riding Star
Fruit Bats - Rips Me Up
PART 4 FACTS
Nora Lilith – Wake
- This track might be my pick of the week. Very much right up my alley. I love the beat and sampling, all the trippy effects, the layering, pretty much everything about this track.
- Nora Lilith is from Austin, Texas and she just released her debut EP. The EP is called “Daysof8” and it is fantastic. Do go and check that out.
- Her music is impressive and even more impressive is that she does it all on her own. She writes, produces, and mixes everything herself. She’s definitely got the skills and I can’t wait to hear more from her.
Dream Dream - Chill Vibes
- Dream Dream is a band from Buffalo, New York. They are pretty new. The three members started the band in the early days of the pandemic. It feels like ages ago but it’s only been a little over a year and a half.
- “Chill Vibes” is their debut release. Actually, it is one half of a double release. The other track is called “Blissin” but I like “Chill Vibes” a little more.
- About the song, the band says that it is about the back-and-forth repeating cycle of a dysfunctional relationship that you can’t seem to live without.
Cousin Kula - Now That Youre Gone
- Cousin Kula is a quintet based in Bristol. Their music is described as a psychedelic blend of soul and jazz.
- “Now That You’re Gone” is there latest release and it comes ahead of the forthcoming debut album. The debut is entitled “Double Dinners”, it will be released on November 26th, and it will come via Rhythm Section.
- Musically, I think it’s just a beautifully smooth track. Very laid-back, and the vocals are so warm. Lovely stuff from good ol Cousin Kula.
Sprints - Modern Job
- I feel like I haven’t played some punk in a while so I thought I’d sneak in this gem of a tune on the playlist.
- As many a punk song, this one is about going against the grain and not accepting the constraints of the stereotypical “ideal life”.
- This track is the title track for their forthcoming new EP. The EP will drop next year in March via Nice Swan Records.
Semi Trucks - Motorbike Riding Star
- I was going for a “nostalgic” feeling closing to tonight’s playlist so I think the last two tracks fit the bill nicely.
- Semi Trucks is a band from LA and their new track is layers of lo-fi goodness. It’s got some country flavor in it too and y’all know I like that.
- It’s the kind of music that I would describe as “tactile”, there is just so much texture in it. Really good stuff.
- The band’s debut album, “Vs. California” is set for release on November 26th via Meritorio Records. I’ll be looking forward to more single releases from Semi Trucks in the coming weeks for sure.
Fruit Bats - Rips Me Up
- Fruit Bats is a folk-rock veteran. He is a Chicago-native but he’s moved around all over the US and he is currently based in Portland.
- He just announced that he will release two-disc 20th anniversary compilation album on January 28th. The album is entitled “Sometimes a Cloud is Just a Cloud” and it will come to us via Merge.
- This new track is a previously unreleased song. It’s got a 70s feel to it. I’m digging it a lot and I thought it was a good one to close the show with tonight.
