Dave [0:00:01]: You're listening to The Dave Gerhardt Show.
Dave [0:00:02]: Alright.
Dave [0:00:17]: This is a fun little
Dave [0:00:18]: change of pace episode for everyone.
Dave [0:00:20]: I was down in Boston for some crazy reason after drive Decided to go.
Dave [0:00:25]: Immediately next week back down to Boston to check out Hubspot un bound event.
Dave [0:00:30]: It had been a decade since I had been there.
Dave [0:00:32]: I knew a bunch of people from the Exit Five community we're gonna be there.
Dave [0:00:35]: So I wanted to go really with no agenda just have some meals with people and be content Dave.
Dave [0:00:41]: And so I almost forgot to do this and Marissa ping me.
Dave [0:00:44]: I was like, hey.
Dave [0:00:44]: Are gonna make any content while we're down there.
Dave [0:00:46]: And so I grabbed my phone, and I was literally just going down the escalator, saw a bunch of people, bunch of familiar faces and friendly folks, marketing leaders from in and around the Exit Five community?
Dave [0:00:57]: And so at un bound live, on the conference floor, I asked everybody two questions.
Dave [0:01:02]: I said, hey.
Dave [0:01:03]: Tell me one thing you're doubling down on in your work life right now, and tell me one thing you're doubling down on in your personal life right now.
Dave [0:01:09]: And that's what you're gonna hear.
Dave [0:01:11]: This mash up of episodes.
Dave [0:01:12]: This mash up of little audio voice notes that was recorded straight from my phone from the floor at un bound.
Dave [0:01:18]: I hope you like this.
Dave [0:01:20]: It's a nice little change of pace.
Dave [0:01:21]: Send you know, David Exit Five if you wanna suggest the topic for the future have any feedback or just wanna say hi to me and the Exit Five team shout out to producer Marissa for making this happen last minute.
Dave [0:01:33]: Here it is.
Dave [0:01:34]: Enjoy this a little short little episode.
Dave [0:01:36]: All about doubling down.
Dave [0:01:37]: Alright.
Dave [0:01:39]: So the number one thing everyone is talking about at these dinners and lunches and around the venue.
Dave [0:01:45]: It's actually...
Dave [0:01:46]: I'm seeing less people interested in.
Dave [0:01:48]: It's different than it was three or four months ago about.
Dave [0:01:50]: You know, this claude skill or that, the bigger conversation now.
Dave [0:01:53]: Especially among founders and executives is like, how do we stand out?
Dave [0:01:58]: How do we differentiate?
Dave [0:02:00]: Everyone is saying the same thing or they're saying Ai powered this or Ai ar powered that?
Dave [0:02:05]: Or you have all these beliefs within a market that a product can or can't do this thing or, hey, maybe what, like, why do Even need your hundred thousand dollar Saas product at all because I have Claude.
Dave [0:02:16]: And so the marketers at these companies, the number one challenge that they have to fight against is one, the perception that Ai can do all these things and so your twenty dollar a month subscription that Chat Boutique can do this thing for you.
Dave [0:02:28]: And then number two is there's just so much noise and so much competition in any industry because of Ai, everyone's adding new Ai features and this and that.
Dave [0:02:36]: It's really hard to stand out.
Dave [0:02:38]: Even if you have something that's better, faster, easy to use, people like it more.
Dave [0:02:43]: People don't necessarily believe that because they're skeptical of marketing.
Dave [0:02:47]: And so a lot of it comes back to how do you stand out.
Dave [0:02:50]: I think the number one thing for marketers right now is to really...
Dave [0:02:53]: It's less about tactics and channels and it's more about digging into company strategy, positioning, messaging, but not just website messaging actually fundamentally go to market, like, bringing marketing, back, marketing needs to have more involvement again in the in the four piece of marketing, not just...
Dave [0:03:14]: Hey, You know, here's this update we got from product or, you know, here's the packaging for this.
Dave [0:03:18]: Or he, like, marketing, it's almost like strategy is going to be more important than ever because all the tactics and stuff that can be done with Ai or any of these tools.
Dave [0:03:28]: The harder conversations are like, where the humans need to be involved, and that's the Cro talking to the CMO and the Chief Product officer and the CEO, making big bets and strategic decisions on where the company is going to go.
Dave [0:03:42]: And I think it's a great time right now for marketers or aspiring marketing leaders and current marketing leader their leaders to really think about strategy.
Dave [0:03:51]: I'll give you an example.
Dave [0:03:52]: I was at dinner tonight with someone on Katie from Survey Monk team.
Dave [0:03:56]: And we just were talking about Katie on our on our podcast.
Dave [0:03:59]: I don't think this episode has has come out yet or maybe it's coming out soon, But you know, a couple of years ago, they rebranded to momentum or something like that because they didn't wanna be perceived as survey monkey in the enterprise, but it's actually funny because today in twenty twenty six, Like, it's almost like being survey monkey.
Dave [0:04:15]: They're going back to their roots and back to their brand and the monkey is actually what's gonna make them stand out and be recognized.
Dave [0:04:21]: And so there's a whole interesting thing there that it's, like, it's either people are talking super tactical about, like, how do you use Claude to run their ads or they're really high level.
Dave [0:04:31]: And I think this is the really important part is, like, making marketing a strategic partner to the business in terms of generating revenue as opposed to ob accessing over little channels.
Dave [0:04:40]: We need more marketers having a seat at the table with the product team with the sales team with the CEO.
Dave [0:04:45]: And influencing and truly being the voice of the customer and understanding the market again.
Jonathan [0:04:52]: Alright.
Jonathan [0:04:52]: So I'm here with Jonathan Hunt.
Jonathan [0:04:54]: He's Vp of Media at Hubspot.
Jonathan [0:04:55]: I'm two questions I'm asking everyone.
Jonathan [0:04:58]: Okay.
Palmer [0:04:58]: Let's do it.
Jonathan [0:04:59]: What is one thing that you're doubling down on at work?
Jonathan [0:05:01]: And what's one thing you're doubling down on in your personalized.
Palmer [0:05:06]: Okay.
Palmer [0:05:06]: At work.
Palmer [0:05:06]: It's going beyond thinking about brands is just being channels but thinking about brands as being things that people experience across all different mediums and touch points.
Palmer [0:05:16]: So brands as events as webinar just Youtube channels as newsletters as...
Jonathan [0:05:20]: What's an example, like, a shit like, one of your shows is a brand.
Palmer [0:05:23]: Like, yeah.
Palmer [0:05:24]: My first name, for example, Like, I imagine that being a live multi thousand person event at the ninety two wire.
Palmer [0:05:29]: So things like that really showing all some place New york I.
Palmer [0:05:33]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:05:33]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:05:34]: Exactly.
Jonathan [0:05:34]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:05:34]: Sorry.
Jonathan [0:05:35]: It's too cool
Sangram [0:05:35]: for you, Hun, Dave.
Sangram [0:05:36]: I'm sorry.
Jonathan [0:05:37]: You Sam had that...
Jonathan [0:05:38]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:05:38]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:05:39]: But I'm really, really understanding that customers of human beings too.
Palmer [0:05:42]: And, like, they wanna experience their brand and not just Youtuber newsletters, but in real life as
Jonathan [0:05:46]: well Yeah.
Jonathan [0:05:46]: Do more.
Jonathan [0:05:47]: In real life.
Jonathan [0:05:47]: Okay.
Jonathan [0:05:47]: And then something you're doubling down on in your first life.
Jonathan [0:05:50]: Examples are, like, you know, someone mentioned, like, I I wanna read more.
Jonathan [0:05:53]: I used to read a book a week.
Jonathan [0:05:54]: And I wanna get back into, you know, playing pickle a ball or I wanna, you know, learn how to cook.
Jonathan [0:06:00]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:06:00]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:06:00]: Probably trying to get probably trying to, be more present for my kids?
Palmer [0:06:09]: I think in general?
Dave [0:06:11]: Never ending.
Palmer [0:06:12]: Never never ending what?
Palmer [0:06:13]: What does that I mean for you
Jonathan [0:06:14]: at home?
Jonathan [0:06:14]: How does that play out?
Palmer [0:06:15]: You know, not not not delaying things for multiple weekends and feeling really bad about being this, like, absentee father figure, but, like, trying to show up more, You know, And, like, being okay with could they busted at four o'clock in the afternoon, and I may have a meeting thirty minutes And being like, you know what?
Palmer [0:06:31]: That's okay.
Jonathan [0:06:32]: Good.
Jonathan [0:06:32]: So feature not bug.
Palmer [0:06:33]: Yes.
Jonathan [0:06:34]: Alright.
Jonathan [0:06:34]: Good job.
Jonathan [0:06:34]: I'm on the escalator with Palmer, Palmer Vp marketing at t two.
Jonathan [0:06:39]: Actually someone yesterday asked me one of my favorite brands of all time B2B brands.
Dave [0:06:43]: You know
Jonathan [0:06:43]: what I said?
Palmer [0:06:44]: I about you...
Palmer [0:06:44]: I'm gonna guess mailchimp.
Jonathan [0:06:45]: I said I
Palmer [0:06:46]: mean, I
Jess [0:06:46]: said that.
Palmer [0:06:47]: I would say the same thing.
Jonathan [0:06:48]: You're OG man mailchimp guy.
Jonathan [0:06:49]: We're here at un bound slash inbound.
Jonathan [0:06:51]: Yes.
Jonathan [0:06:52]: What's one thing at work that you're doubling down on right now?
Palmer [0:06:56]: I know everybody's saying Ai.
Palmer [0:06:56]: What, really for our side?
Palmer [0:06:58]: It's like, what's the balance between efficiency and effectiveness?
Palmer [0:07:02]: Because I feel like everyone's been like, oh, Ai ai everything Ai.
Palmer [0:07:05]: And it's, like, what's the outcome?
Palmer [0:07:06]: Like, what are we driving those?
Palmer [0:07:07]: That's why I think my team
Sangram [0:07:09]: sort of
Palmer [0:07:10]: we're trying to figure that out?
Palmer [0:07:10]: And do it in the right way.
Jonathan [0:07:12]: Okay.
Jonathan [0:07:12]: Side questions.
Jonathan [0:07:12]: It's not my real question since you're here.
Palmer [0:07:15]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:07:15]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:07:15]: You know, you you worked at mailchimp military.
Jonathan [0:07:16]: I I know you.
Jonathan [0:07:17]: I know you marketing in a certain way.
Jonathan [0:07:19]: How do you guide them to, like, not Ai f everything.
Jonathan [0:07:22]: Like, they're I like lean into the productivity piece of
Palmer [0:07:25]: it versus the, like, hey, you're a designer.
Palmer [0:07:27]: I don't want you to go, use Claude design It's, like, you can still designer trust you to be a designer.
Palmer [0:07:30]: Same way with a writers.
Sangram [0:07:32]: Okay.
Palmer [0:07:32]: But it's, like, what are you doing to be more productive Somebody maybe get to that final version faster.
Palmer [0:07:37]: And then that could just be like, hey, I'm I'm not I'm not spending as much time like, taking notes doing this because I can just go reference that of grindelwald all what I heard is.
Sangram [0:07:45]: That's the
Palmer [0:07:45]: thing It's like, I don't think Ai for marketing sized fits all.
Palmer [0:07:48]: Big trying can say, Well, like...
Palmer [0:07:50]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:07:50]: Let's just go.
Palmer [0:07:51]: Hey.
Palmer [0:07:51]: Get that draft all done and call out and we.
Palmer [0:07:53]: Maybe not.
Jonathan [0:07:55]: Add some of your sauce on.
Palmer [0:07:56]: Yes.
Palmer [0:07:56]: Yes.
Palmer [0:07:57]: Yes.
Palmer [0:07:58]: Say yeah.
Palmer [0:07:58]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:07:58]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:07:59]: My whole talk for our vet last week.
Jonathan [0:08:00]: Dry with Ai was terrible.
Palmer [0:08:03]: Yeah.
Palmer [0:08:03]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:08:03]: And I went back like, just Dave's beer you know, Right.
Palmer [0:08:06]: Right.
Palmer [0:08:06]: Just like, be be yourself
Jonathan [0:08:07]: be yourself And right.
Jonathan [0:08:08]: Right.
Palmer [0:08:08]: Really.
Palmer [0:08:08]: Right.
Palmer [0:08:09]: And like, way, I helps you get to, like, hey.
Palmer [0:08:11]: I need I need help outlining this and just, like, thinking organized organizing my thoughts great.
Palmer [0:08:14]: But, like, it's prob...
Palmer [0:08:15]: You're probably gonna come up with something better than.
Jonathan [0:08:18]: Personal life.
Jonathan [0:08:18]: Some of you're doubling down.
Jonathan [0:08:19]: Sorry.
Palmer [0:08:19]: I'm doubling down on my...
Palmer [0:08:20]: You'll like this one my my gym routine.
Palmer [0:08:22]: I've gotten into a good, like, Monday, Wednesday Friday sort of go...
Palmer [0:08:26]: I go to it's funny.
Palmer [0:08:27]: I go to...
Palmer [0:08:28]: What what would you call a where do they call it?
Palmer [0:08:30]: A silver hair gem, look, it's attached to the hospital, and it's me in a bunch of seventy year olds.
Jonathan [0:08:34]: Hey.
Palmer [0:08:34]: And so I also...
Palmer [0:08:35]: I feel great.
Palmer [0:08:36]: Like, I'm my man.
Palmer [0:08:36]: I'm doing.
Palmer [0:08:37]: I'm ripped.

Palmer [0:08:46]: I've made all these friends of, like, you know, retirees
Jonathan [0:08:48]: and the only place I ever been in my life.
Palmer [0:08:52]: I don't think I didn't hit on Jeff.
Palmer [0:08:53]: I gotta I gotta I gotta I ways to go.

Jonathan [0:09:18]: Ten speed.
Jonathan [0:09:19]: That's crazy.
Jonathan [0:09:20]: Ten years.
Jonathan [0:09:20]: Alright.
Jonathan [0:09:21]: I got two questions for you.
Jonathan [0:09:22]: What's one thing in your work life that you're gonna double down on, and what's something in your personal life that you're doubling down on right now.
Sangram [0:09:30]: I think I'm gonna double down on one on one conversations?
Sangram [0:09:32]: I think it has been eye opening how many partnerships and things that I wasn't even thinking about that happened just because I had one on one conversation.
Sangram [0:09:41]: The whole idea of having hundreds of people one point So One on one is what I'm gonna double down.
Jonathan [0:09:47]: Okay.
Jonathan [0:09:47]: I love that.
Jonathan [0:09:47]: One on one more one on one.
Jonathan [0:09:49]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:09:49]: What about personal life.
Jonathan [0:09:51]: Something you're gonna double down on your personal life.
Sangram [0:09:53]: Well, yesterday, there was a conversation by Mel Robbins.
Sangram [0:09:56]: She was speaking here.
Sangram [0:09:57]: And she said, you know what purpose.
Sangram [0:09:59]: Purpose is not what you do.
Sangram [0:10:00]: Purpose the impact that you have on others when they see what you do and how you do it.
Sangram [0:10:05]: So I'm gonna double down on my purpose.
Sangram [0:10:07]: I thought I'm gonna build this great company and do all these things.
Sangram [0:10:10]: I'm like, no.
Sangram [0:10:11]: No.
Sangram [0:10:11]: I wanna see with the impact that people have and what they're gonna do.
Sangram [0:10:15]: At result how I do what I do.
Sangram [0:10:17]: So I think that reframe my purpose.
Sangram [0:10:19]: Thank you, brother.
Jonathan [0:10:21]: I'm here with Jeff Cook.
Jonathan [0:10:22]: Vp Marketing at Vector.
Jonathan [0:10:24]: She's wonderful.
Jonathan [0:10:24]: They crushed it at Drive.
Jonathan [0:10:26]: We're now at un bound.
Jonathan [0:10:28]: You had six hundred fifty people your session.
Jonathan [0:10:30]: Yesterday.
Jonathan [0:10:30]: That's amazing.
Jonathan [0:10:30]: I wanna know one thing in your work life and your life.
Jonathan [0:10:34]: So one thing in your work life that you're doubling down on or you're, like, long on, and one thing in your personal life that you're doubling down on trying to deep more on.
Jess [0:10:42]: Okay.
Jess [0:10:42]: Work life.
Jess [0:10:43]: I really got into club code this year.
Jess [0:10:46]: We just took our website off of wet flow, and we hard it and we moved it over to, like, github, and
Jonathan [0:10:53]: just gonna be so happy to.
Jess [0:10:54]: I know.
Jess [0:10:54]: I know.
Jess [0:10:55]: She and I are in the her no doubts were harms community together.
Jess [0:10:59]: Was amazing.
Jess [0:11:00]: But, yeah.
Jess [0:11:01]: So I'm excited just to, like, see what else I can do there.
Jess [0:11:03]: Like, really surprised myself with how much I learned and how much I was able to build?
Jonathan [0:11:07]: Why was it powerful?
Jonathan [0:11:08]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:11:08]: Yeah.
Jess [0:11:09]: I think it completely removed the intimidation factor of Ai for me.
Jess [0:11:13]: Like, I just made myself do it, and I figured it out, and now I'm like, oh I can literally do anything.
Jonathan [0:11:18]: And how did you it?
Jonathan [0:11:19]: Did you like, block a Tuesday or a weekend or, like, what was the...
Jonathan [0:11:22]: Because everybody talks about, was the forcing function actually like, sit down and do it?
Jess [0:11:25]: It was this event, like we had to have this new site live by yesterday our product launch.
Jess [0:11:30]: And so
Jonathan [0:11:31]: Wow are good.
Jess [0:11:33]: Deadlines, make it happen every time.
Jess [0:11:34]: And so, yeah.
Jess [0:11:35]: It was, like, eighty hours of just, like, sitting down and figuring it out making a happen.
Jonathan [0:11:41]: Did.
Jonathan [0:11:41]: Not a website development.
Jess [0:11:42]: I did it.
Jess [0:11:42]: Which is incredible It's like to learn.
Jess [0:11:44]: Yeah.
Jess [0:11:45]: I was A
Jonathan [0:11:46]: bit of that.
Jonathan [0:11:46]: Now you can basically, like, prompt, to make updates on your site.
Dave [0:11:49]: Like, you're, like, I had
Jonathan [0:11:50]: changed this page to this.
Jonathan [0:11:51]: You don't
Sangram [0:11:51]: have to...
Jonathan [0:11:52]: There's no dependency.
Jonathan [0:11:52]: You don't have to wait for.
Jess [0:11:53]: Made on today.
Jess [0:11:54]: Like, we I've sat down this morning.
Jess [0:11:55]: I like, made a couple changes and we'll update the...

Jess [0:12:00]: Yes say.
Jess [0:12:00]: Incredible.

Jess [0:12:05]: Well, you know, in my effort to always be more, like, dig get harder.
Jonathan [0:12:08]: You could shave your head.
Jess [0:12:09]: No, god, both.
Jess [0:12:10]: Sorry.
Jess [0:12:10]: I can't do that.
Jess [0:12:11]: However, I do want to double down on my efforts at the gym.
Jess [0:12:16]: Okay?
Jess [0:12:17]: I've been lifting
Jonathan [0:12:18]: do that as a corporate executive
Dave [0:12:19]: in a received pile on, you know?
Jess [0:12:21]: I think the only hack is really just wake up earlier.
Jess [0:12:23]: Like, that is it.
Jess [0:12:24]: Like that Just in another hour in the morning when the kids are not awake that...
Jess [0:12:27]: What time
Jonathan [0:12:28]: do you wake up now?
Jess [0:12:29]: Oh, right now, I waking it up at like five forty five.
Jess [0:12:30]: I think I gotta make it a five o'clock wake up.
Jonathan [0:12:32]: I know.
Jonathan [0:12:32]: The difference between five and five forty five is, like, condensed, though...
Jonathan [0:12:36]: Big.
Jonathan [0:12:36]: Okay.
Jonathan [0:12:36]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:12:37]: Monday through Friday every day.
Jess [0:12:40]: I would love to, like, really be consistent, like, three days a week lifting.
Jess [0:12:43]: Okay?
Jonathan [0:12:44]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:12:44]: I have confidence in you.
Jess [0:12:46]: Thank you.
Jonathan [0:12:46]: You can do it.
Jess [0:12:46]: Thank you.
Jonathan [0:12:47]: You have a plan.
Jess [0:12:48]: I do have plan.
Jonathan [0:12:48]: Like, it's not like you haven't done things while being tired anyway.
Jonathan [0:12:51]: Maybe now, you're
Jess [0:12:52]: tires, like, thirteen years exactly.
Jonathan [0:12:55]: Exactly.
Jonathan [0:12:55]: And your kids will get older and you'll only be tight...
Jonathan [0:12:57]: And I were talking about this is
Dave [0:12:58]: it's like, it's like, right now, we can go to bed early.
Jonathan [0:13:00]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:13:00]: But when they're, like, eighteen or twenty and you're wondering about where they are.
Jonathan [0:13:03]: I'm gonna have, like, stay up late during where everybody is.
Jonathan [0:13:06]: Yeah.
Jonathan [0:13:06]: And reactions to un mountain.
Jonathan [0:13:09]: This event.
Jonathan [0:13:09]: Why here?
Jonathan [0:13:10]: What is it do for you?
