IN NATIONAL NEWS,
The House passes a $1.2 trillion bill to end the partial government shutdown. This spending package opens debate in Congress regarding Homeland Security funding. The vote was 217-214 on 11 of the 12 bills which will fund the majority of the government for the budget year until Sept. 30. Trump signed the bill into law, ending the partial government shutdown which began Saturday. Speaker Mike Johnson needed near unanimous support from Republicans in order to hold a vote. A procedural vote was held open for an extra hour as leaders tried to gain support from GOP lawmakers. Lawmakers needed to advance their own priorities unrelated to the financing, and individual member’s concerns were met to gain the consensus. This package includes short-term funding for the Department of Homeland Security through Feb. 13 as deals are made regarding ICE and their immigration enforcement efforts within cities. Previously, this bill had been approved by the House, however the Senate denied it, needing more negotiations regarding Homeland Security funding. Democrats are pushing for change after two citizens in Minneapolis were shot and killed by federal agents.
ALSO IN NATIONAL NEWS,
President Trump says Republicans should take over voting in the US in an interview on Monday. His administration has repeatedly tried to change election rules ahead of the midterms this year. This also comes less than a week after the FBI searched an election office in Fulton County, Georgia which has often been at the center of President Trump claiming the 2020 election was rigged against him. The White House clarified his statement by saying that he was referring to a national voter ID requirement that he has pushed. Last year, he signed an executive order seeking to require voters to show proof of US citizenship when registering to vote in elections and prohibit states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day. While it’s been partially blocked in federal court, noncitizens are already prohibited from voting in federal elections. Talking to Dan Bongino, former Deputy Director of the FBI, Trump said, Quote “The Republicans should say, we want to take over, we should take over the voting, the voting in at least many, 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” End-Quote.
