Show Notes

As broadcast April 8, 2022 with plenty of soul for your podcast Friday night.  Tonight we welcomed the lead singer from Laura Rain & The Caesars to talk about their new album out today called "Rise Again," out now via LRK Records.  A veteran band, it was an honor to talk to the artist about the new LP along with some of her favorite tunes and fellow artists that call Detroit home.  Tunes from Amp Fiddler, Tall Black Guy, and Napoleon Demps were for the modern side while classics from The Detroit Emeralds, Bettye Lavette, and Parliament brought it home for the old school heads.

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight as the weekend starts and what an absolute gem of a week weather-wise we’ve had with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, so it’s time to feel good, fair listener. Danno here and welcome to this week’s gig, as always giving the feel good vibes a go on the air from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, it’s Friday night and our guest artist selector this week is Laura Rain. She’s the lead singer with her band the Caesars based in Detroit, and they are out with the Rise Again LP today, although I think it’s not out until later today US time as I haven’t seen it on the servers over here just yet, and all the better for us as that makes a few of these jawns tonight a world premeire, which we’re always into. So tonight, it’s all about that Detroit soul old and new, and we’ll start with the Prince himself getting spacey at a time in his life where he probably wished he was out in the void far from earth, but we’ll talk about all those terrestrial worries side opposite the cosmic rebirth. This is The Drop.
Marvin Gaye – A Funky Space Reincarnation
________
The Drop has officially lifted off in our ragtag spacecraft tonight, ready to welcome Laura Rain to the show in hour 2. Laura Rain and The Caesars are a great soul band out of Detroit who are out with a fantastic new LP today called Rise Again, and we’ll welcome Laura to the show in part 3 to rock some of the artist’s old school and contemporary favorites and while getting a taste of several tunes from the LP in the process.
So, it’s all about the soul sound from the 313 tonight, and we started with the Prince of Soul himself Marvin Gaye right there, that was A Funky Space Reincarnation to open the festival tent here on the air and commence this weekend properly.
This is a tune a lot of Chicago and Detroit Guidance Records house and techno heads will notice as being sampled by Blue Boy, the original appearing on Gaye’s famed double album from late 1978 called Here, My Dear.
Now, that tune is a bit of an outlier since most of the album deals with The Prince of Soul’s estrangement and divorce from Anna Gordy Gaye. And if that 2nd name is ringing bells in your head, fair listener, you are a sharp one. Yes, that is Motown-Tamla head Barry Gordy’s daughter, which must’ve made the acrimony on that split extra fun. Yeesh.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
So now that we’re floating properly in the ether, let’s get to some more cosmic Detroit to continue the vibe here in part 1’s Laura Rain warm-up. We got the latest from Amp Fiddler up next then a Jazzanova reimagination followed by a furious bump from Tall Black Guy. THIS is The Drop on your Laura Rain Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for here in the first quarter of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here readying the airwaves for the arrival of Laura Rain in hour 2. Rise Again drops today in full from Laura Rain & The Caesars, but as mentioned I’m not sure it’s out everywhere just yet tonight as I speak these words. For right now, we’re warming up for Laura Rain’s playlist in hour 2 with some Detroit vibes, so let’s get to the readout on that first block of cuts …
Amp Fiddler – Energy (Blue Lab Beats Remix) (…this is the latest from one of Detroit’s most well-known electronic music exponents. As we’ll discuss in hour 2, this cat has a ridiculous list of credits and due to achieving fame mainly in the UK & Europe back in the day, is someone I just assumed was British for years.)
Jazzanova feat Sean Haefeli – Face At My Window (…now the original of this is a tune by Sam Sanders, which was featured on DJ Amir’s compilation tribute to Strata Records of Detroit. This is the Jazzanova cover, and appears on the German outfit’s upcoming reimagining of that compilation, which is due out in full June 24.)
Tall Black – Leave Us To Say Goodnight (…big up to our main man Rick Wade, also a famed Detroit export. Rick was one of our first guests on the show’s Friday series back in early 2019, and like pretty much all of Tall Black Guy’s stuff, this is just a lovely bump.)
Okay, so we gotta return to Detroit right now and get more grounded but stay positive, and nobody better to do exactly that with than Al Hudson and The Soul Partners. We’ll close part 1 with a tune called Spread Love, and all we gotta say to everything even remotely connected to this song is YES. You are listening to The Drop with Danno on your hail the caesars and the 313 Friday night jam.
Al Hudson & The Soul Partners – Spread Love

The Drop returns as we have cold opened the 2nd quarter on this Friday night flight with Laura Rain. Danno here all about that Detroit soul anytime, but especially tonight. Laura Rain and The Caesars are out with the Rise Again LP today, and we’ll be joined by the lead singer of the outfit starting in part 3 tonight. Now as to the details on those first couple of slow burn balloons we just lifted, let’s explain a bit...
Cleo Sol – When I’m In Your Arms ( …a bit of a cut for time refugee from Laura Rain’s 2nd hour playlist right here. Kind of like Amp Fiddler, it seems like there’s a lot more to Cleo Sol than just the songs with the artist’s name on it, such as...)
SAULT – Masterpiece ( …a mystery group on a mystery label called Forever living Originals, although it is rather obvious Cleo Sol is involved given the vocal qualities. Trying to find more on this prolific group is a task though, so good luck. Lots to listen to with SAULT, having dropped 5 albums the last three years, all of them exquisite.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So up next we’ve got more cut for time gems from Laura Rain’s hour 2 playlist, and we’ll start with the Colors show version of Only With Time by Adria Kain, and we’ll follow with cuts from Jamie Liddell and Sharon Jones to finish the din. THIS is The Drop on your Rise Again Friday night.
____________
The Drop returns to the mic for one final verbal slap. Danno here, readying the tarmac for Laura Rain’s appearance as our guest artist selector for tonight. Laura Rain and The Caesars are out with the Rise Again LP today, so do check, and we’ll get our first taste of a couple cuts from the album in just a minute, but for now, let’s talk about what we just put into the air...
Adria Kain – Only With Time (A COLORS SHOW) (…this is an artist out of Toronto who just put out When Flowers Bloom on February 11. This is the Colors Show version from the original on the LP, and do check that album in full it is lovely.)
Jamie Liddell – How Did I Live Before Your Love (…another prolific artist right here who’s worked with the biggest of the big names in the biz. However, to get a tad personal, I was thinking this a few days ago as my wife was out of the house for most of last week. Seriously, I was lost, and I’m sure all the ladies out there are giggling to themselves right now.)
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – Nobody’s Baby (…the late great singer-songwriter right here off the 2007 LP 100 Days, 100 Nights LP. Rest in power to Sharon Jones, who lives forever even though she didn’t even start in music until rather late in life.)
So, let’s get to some music from our guest artist selector’s new LP just out today. Up next we have a pair of tunes from Laura Rain & The Caesars, starting with the previously released title track Rise Again, and we’ll finish our first 57 tonight with another cut called I Can Fly. Ms Laura Rain as she’s known in her instaself will be on the phone with us from Detroit momentarily, but for now THIS is The Drop, and that’s a wrap for the first 57 tonight.
