Show Notes

This episode covers critical advancements in AI and technology regulation across multiple sectors including Douane 2030, Defence Innovation, Strategy, Deepfake, and Medical Device. We delve into the latest enforcement of the EU AI Act, significant developments in deepfake transparency, and Australia's strategic defence initiatives.

One major update is the enforcement of the EU AI Act starting August 2, 2026, which imposes strict transparency obligations, mandates AI-generated content labeling, and bans harmful AI practices such as social scoring and biometric identification in public spaces. The legislation targets companies and agencies within the EU, requiring clear disclosure of AI interactions and training data documentation.

What is This Week in AI Regulations?

Weekly news, analysis, and insights from AI regulation updates the world over

Welcome to This Week in AI Regulations for August 09, 2026.

Starting with the European Union, several key legislative acts entered into force between August 1 and September 15, 2026. Among these is the EU AI Act, which establishes a risk-based framework and transparency requirements for artificial intelligence systems. The AI Act mandates that AI-generated or AI-modified content must be clearly labeled using specific EU-designed icons. It also prohibits nine harmful AI practices, including manipulation, social scoring, and biometric identification in public spaces. These rules apply to companies, institutions, and agencies operating within the European Union. Enforcement of the AI Act began on August 2, 2026, introducing transparency obligations that require AI systems to disclose AI interactions and label deepfakes. Providers of general-purpose AI models must document training data and copyright policies to address systemic risks. Chatbots and interactive AI systems must inform users when they are interacting with AI, and AI-generated or altered content must carry machine-readable marks.

In Italy, the Garante per la Protezione dei Dati Personali, Italy’s data protection authority, has prohibited the use of deepfake satirical videos that manipulate the image and voice of journalist Enrico Mentana without clear transparency. The Garante issued a formal admonishment to R.T.I. Spa and banned further use of such data in the contested manner. This action underscores the importance of respecting dignity and privacy principles under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, specifically articles 5 and 25. Media companies must ensure transparency, fairness, and lawfulness when processing data with deepfake technology, including providing clear and understandable warnings about the artificial nature of videos.

The Fourth Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Signatory Taskforce meeting focused on post-market monitoring of AI model usage for systemic risk assessment. The taskforce emphasized obligations for AI model providers to disclose web crawler usage and robots.txt features to affected rights holders. Additionally, providers must make publicly available the measures adopted to comply with rights reservations during web crawling.

In the United States, a federal jury convicted Aaron Chase Sanders for possessing child sexual abuse material, including AI-generated content. This conviction highlights ongoing federal enforcement efforts against child exploitation crimes and the role of advanced technology in investigations.

In the United Kingdom and United States, the U.S.-UK Financial Regulatory Working Group held its 13th meeting in summer 2026. Discussions included regulatory modernization and the adoption of artificial intelligence in financial markets. The working group emphasized continued cooperation on financial stability initiatives and engagement on AI adoption and cybersecurity.

Finally, in Australia, the 2026 Defence Innovation, Science and Technology Strategy was launched, highlighting artificial intelligence as one of six key capability priorities. The strategy focuses on investment and research in AI alongside long-range fires, hypersonic weapons, high-energy lasers, autonomous systems, quantum technology, and undersea warfare. It aims to strengthen partnerships across government, industry, academia, and international allies, promoting rapid experimentation and risk-balanced technology transition.
