Yesterday evening, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made the announcement that the UK would have a General Election in July.
As Wednesday developed, the rumour mill began turning faster, until it was confirmed in an announcement at 5pm that the 2024 General Election would be held on Thursday 4th July. The Prime Minister had been rather coy about the potential date of the election, even at yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Questions, with the only clues to when it would be held being that it would not come in the first half of the year.
In a rain-soaked speech in front of Number 10, the Prime Minister told the public: “Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future.”

Newcastle City Council has announced that work has begun on the new Health Innovation Neighbourhood, that will promote longer, healthier lives around the city and the wider North East region.
Economic and infrastructure development is the driving force behind the innovation neighbourhood, with this being achieved by bringing health, research and community amenities together.
Two sustainable transport hubs are also included within the approved redevelopment plan, with these supporting to the site’s new purposes and public areas.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has announced that it has launched an investigation into the Department for Work and Pensions.
This comes as the commission suspects that the treatment of some disabled benefits claimants has broken equality law, with this relating to ‘successive Secretaries of State.
As part of this investigation, the EHRC will also look into whether or not the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions has complied with the Public Sector Equality Duty obligations which require bodies such as the department to prevent discrimination by considering equality throughout their operations.
