Live More, Earn More

Why Working Harder Isn't the Answer

Are you constantly busy… but still feel like you're not getting ahead?

In this episode, I share why working harder isn't the secret to building a successful business - and why hustle culture simply isn't sustainable, especially if you're juggling family, health, or simply want more from life than endless work.

✨ Abundance. Alignment. Action.
It’s time to live more and earn more - with ease.

Have you ever felt like you're working
harder than ever but not getting anywhere?

Perhaps you feel like you're
trapped on the hamster wheel,

and you are just running in
circles and spinning and spinning

And I think for myself and for a lot
of people, I got off the hamster wheel.

I got off the kind of 9:00
to 5:00 hamster wheel.

But then sometimes I feel like I've
replaced it with something else because

There's a sort of kudos to working
harder, like, you know, the Hormozis and

all of that, the hustle harder culture.

And when I listen to what they have
to say, like Alex Hormozi and, I can't

remember her name, is it Leila Hormozi?

And it's like, okay, that may
work when you're in your 20s.

I've definitely, like, burned the
midnight oil and worked crazy hours.

But I'm now 50, and the hustle harder
culture doesn't work for me right now.

I'm a single mum to a lovely, gorgeous
boy who does have some additional needs,

and I need to be present and be around
for him, so I can't work all the time.

I have to be up to get him
to school, to do the things.

And in the holidays, I have to
fit my business around his life.

And if I were trying to compete
in that world, I would feel really

drained and exhausted, and I'm not.

I am really happy with the life that I've
built and the business that I am building.

And I'm really happy and content to be
able to create a life and fit my business

around my life rather than trying to
squeeze bits of life into the, you

know, the odd corners of my business.

My life is the absolute foundation
of everything, and how I show up as a

parent, the time that I have, things
like going wild swimming, all of those

things are really important to me,
and then my business fits around that.

It is a Sunday evening and
I'm recording this podcast.

I'm more than happy to spend my Sunday
evening… I've put my son to bed.

We've watched a movie together.

And now I'm more than happy to
spend 20 minutes or so recording

this podcast because that's how
I fit my business, around my life

And we have been told that we sort
of celebrate busyness as though it's

some badge of honor, that success
becomes linked to exhaustion and

burnout, and actually that isn't the
way to go it isn't a badge of honor.

For me, I spent my 20s working as a
journalist, and I would work crazy hours.

We would, you know, often if we were
somewhere where it was kind of, you know,

you'd go on location, and you'd be in
a remote place doing something where it

was really challenging and difficult,
and you'd be working from the minute you

woke up, might be 4:00 in the morning,
until midnight, and you'd grab a few hours

sleep, and you'd carry on the next day.

And you'd work like that for a week
or two, and then you might come back

from an earthquake or a protest or
whatever it was, have a few days

off, and then off it goes again.

You do the same thing all over again.

And I was burned out.

By the time I finished that
life, I was absolutely exhausted.

And so I knew that I wanted to create
a life that really fitted around me

and my life, and I wanted to put my
life first rather than constantly

having to chase the next client or
feeling like I had to do everything

and feeling guilty if I wasn't making
sure that I was ticking all the boxes.

Because actually, we don't
need to do everything, and we

don't need to always seem busy.

In fact, we are most productive when
we have that time away, when we have

that space away to, to think, to be.

I'm just about to go off in the
campervan, and I love that time

'cause I have to disconnect.

I can't get Wi-Fi, and it forces me to
think differently and behave differently

And for me, I have so much going on in my
life, with divorce, with health issues,

that I need that time to switch off.

Because when I do switch off, I
find that I am much, much more

productive when I come back.

And also, I think about other ways, I get
more excited, I think about other ways of

working, and I find I'm more productive
because there is such a difference

between being busy, between doing the
activity, and actually making progress.

Sometimes it's the busyness rather
than actually delivering and progress.

we don't need to tick off
an endless to-do list.

Like sometimes I'll write a to-do list
on things, and sometimes I look at that

to-do list and I think, "God, these are
pointless." And obviously, sometimes

it is not pointless and -- there are
milestones and goals that we need to do,

but sometimes are you just ticking off a
list because that's what you should do,

and you feel a satisfaction in ticking
off a list rather than focusing on the

things that really drive things forward?

And, you know, certainly for me,
I've been questioning a lot of

that over the past few weeks.

I've been really thinking, "Okay,
how can I really focus on what is

going to absolutely accelerate growth
rather than being busy?" And, you

know, sometimes that's, that's tricky.

It might mean outsourcing, or it
might mean saying no to clients.

I've got this project at the moment,
and it's a big project, and it's

with an exciting multinational
company, and there's a lot of

kudos involved in that project.

But the project is kind of aligned
to my business, but it's not exactly

my business, and I might spend so
much time working on the project

that I'm not focused on the business.

And while it's really satisfying and,
you know, my ego definitely gets a stroke

from doing it, am I actually moving things
forward or am I creating a new busyness?

And I had a realization the other day that
perhaps my ego was being stroked more than

it actually driving the business forward.

Because if I weren't to focus on that,
and instead I focused on perhaps doing

more podcasts or YouTube videos, in
the long run, that is going to drive my

business forward at a much faster rate.

So sometimes we need to just take
that step back, and it's not always

about just jumping on the next
thing, and being busy, and delivering

it, and ticking off the list.

Sometimes it's about really thinking, "Is
this the right decision for me and for

my business?" And I think I've come to
the conclusion that while I'm certainly

interested in that project, actually,
it's not gonna drive the business forward.

It's not going to deliver the results
that I really want because it's

kind of-- it's an offshoot, it's a
tangent rather than the core focus.

And sometimes we can get distracted
by the side projects rather than

actually delivering results.

You know, it's that 80/20 principle,
and if you just focus on the thing that

gives you eighty percent of revenue, and
maybe that occupies twenty percent of

your time, and if you just focused on
that, what would make the difference?

And that is, you know, that is that shift
from employee thinking to CEO thinking.

And when you start really leveraging
that and thinking, "Okay, so how can

I make this happen without me?" And
perhaps that side project, I will hire

somebody in to do that project, and
that is something I'm considering.

But maybe it's what else can you do
to remove yourself from the business

so that you are focused on the assets
and the marketing rather than actually

in the day-to-day, in the doing?

And maybe it's building those systems,
so instead of relying on, you know, this

is the way we've always done it, it's
looking at those systems, those SOPs, and

thinking long-term, "How is this the best
way to work?" Rather than just veering

from project to project in that kind
of survival mo-mode, you are focused on

delivering those outcomes that you know
you are so capable of And that's why, for

me, I am really looking at my automations.

Now, Flowelle, my business, is all about
tech and automations, and sometimes

we're so good at seeing the blind
spots of other people, my clients, you

know, helping them to overcome their
blind spots and, you know, really

smooth out and automate the tech.

But sometimes for
ourselves we can struggle.

And, you know, it's-- for me, it's really
thinking, okay, what do I delegate?

How can I simplify?

And, you know, looking at the core
elements of the business, focusing on

those, the 20% that gives me 80% of
the revenue, and actually maybe not

being distracted by those, you know,
the shiny, bright objects that might

feel like it's a bit of an ego stroke,
but may not be the right thing for you

So I thought I'd make a list of some
of the core things that have really

made a massive difference to me and
helped me with kind of simplifying

and focusing on those core things.

So number one, fairly obvious,
but I'm gonna say it anyway.

Automating appointment bookings.

So rather than back and
forth chat, "Can we, we meet?

Are you free on Friday?" "No." "Can
we do Thursday 1:00 PM?" "Oh, can we

make it 2:00 PM?" All of that, it is so
much easier to have a calendar system.

And while I used to use acuity scheduling
software, I used to find it so complicated

that I didn't really use it that much.

Whereas now with my business Flowelle,
and it has integrated calendars, I love

it, and it's so much easier that I just…

You know, I use that all the time,
and I really find that helps.

Also, having proper email sequences.

So someone signs up for a freebie, and
they get a sequence of emails, and they

are on your list, and you're selling to
them, and that makes a massive difference.

And it means that you can start
selling, you can start nurturing,

and you know where they are.

And fitting into that
is having a proper CRM.

I have never had a CRM system before.

I've always just had a spreadsheet,
notes on my phone, all of those things.

And with Flowelle, I
now have a proper CRM.

I know who is potential leads, cold
leads, warm leads, and I find it so

useful and, you know, you can add in
those notes, know where you are with

people, and there's no more sort of…

I used to find myself, I'd have
bits of tatty old paper, and I'd

be, you know, having a pile of
paper and s- rummaging through them

for notes I'd made about somebody.

I don't do that anymore, and I love that

Another thing, and it's something that I'm
doing right now, is batching my content,

and I've done this for a long time.

But sometimes when we're in that sort of
busy mode, we forget, and I definitely

this year… I was just looking at my,
um, like, looking at my video library, and

I've realized I've only recorded videos
twice this year and batching my content,

which for me is pretty shocking, 'cause
normally I have videos every single month.

And so that tells you that my focus
has been off, that I've not been

concentrating on the marketing,
batching content, planning ahead

because I've just been so busy with
other things, and it's understandable.

You know, I've been
launching a new business.

I've had a really messy court
date, lots of health issues.

So all of these things have
definitely steered me away from my

usual marketing batching routine.

And creating content today, I did some
YouTube videos, and I'm just recording

this podcast, has been such a joy.

And you know, I, I really say to
you, it… there is such satisfaction

of feeling organized and feeling
like you're nailing your content.

Nothing to me feels better.

I love it

And then it means if you do that and
you're really organized and you batch your

content, then it means you can protect
the time in your diary that matters most.

And so, you know, when I'm away, school
holidays, those moments where I wanna

be really present, I wanna sit and have
snuggles on the sofa or watch a movie

or go swimming in the lake together
or have play dates, and I can do

those things and I don't feel guilty.

And that is, that is the biggest
flex to me And then finally, one of

the ones that I think is, is just
such… It makes a massive difference,

and it's weird how much difference
it makes, is removing unnecessary

apps, subscriptions, or emails.

And so what I mean is, you know, as, as
entrepreneurs, we can be on the marketing

list of loads of different people, and
then we read their content, and one, we

feel guilty or they make us feel bad or
whatever, and it's a real distraction from

us and our message and our storytelling.

So I ideally would like you
to not unsubscribe to my list.

But, you know, if anybody triggers you,
if anyone makes you feel awkward or

guilty or whatever those reactions are,
or not worthy enough or not good enough

or not enough, unsubscribe from that list.

It is so satisfying.

Okay?

So, you know, I just did this.

I, I do it fairly regularly, but I
just did this the other day and I

got rid of a load of different things
that they're just time suckers.

So get rid of them.

The same with unnecessary
apps or subscriptions.

So I hide my Instagram and my Facebook,
so I don't look at them all the time.

I minimize the hours that I'm on them.

And also subscriptions.

I have really tried to kind
of just cull the subscriptions

of things that I don't need.

You know, I used to subscribe to so many
different, like, video editing apps or all

of these things, and I never used them.

They were just sort of
sat there on my phone.

So get rid of them and it's
just easier to clear the decks.

And when you focus on just the core
things, it enables you to have the

space to be more creative, think more
creatively, have more time for your

family, and just enjoy the flexibility.

So ask yourself this week, what
task do you repeat every week?

Could this be automated?

And also, are you creating income
or are you just being busy?

What is the one thing
that you could stop doing

And what's the one system
that would save you time?

I dare you, I challenge you to
automate one task this week.

Let me know how you go.

I would love to hear, because
remember, success isn't about working

harder, it's about working smarter.

And you want your business to fit
around your life, not completely

overwhelm and consume it.

So here's to stepping off the
treadmill and having an amazing day.

Sending you lots of love.

Bye bye bye.
