Good morning.

And welcome to morning cereal

Okay, good morning and welcome to

Wednesday. It's the middle of the week

and today is coming from the cold day

Literally, and that seems like some

pretty good advice given the polar vortex

Most of the country has been

under the last couple of days

Well, it's also a national grandpa day.

So give your grandpa a ring if you can

and tell him how special he is

Lastly, I thought I'd point out it's also

celebration of life day and that day has

come to signify all

that's good about being alive

It's easy to forget sometimes just all

the things that had to come together

Perfectly for you and I to be

alive at this moment in time

So we're super fortunate to be here and

take time to celebrate that the good far

outweighs the bad in this life

And it all starts with

gratitude and appreciation

Where you are right now?

Okay, let's go ahead and jump into

today's episode with today's quotes

One fun nostalgic quote and then a second

quote to tease our book review later in

the episode as always

I hope one of these quotes will speak to

you and kickstart your

day in a positive direction

Okay

Here's the first quote. It's from the

character Peter Banning better known as

Peter Pan and it's from the movie hook

and it's in response

To Wendy asking Peter the question

So your adventures are over and here's

the quote Peter Pan says

Oh, no to live to live would be an

awfully big adventure

So my take away from that is we're all in

the middle of our own adventures

So make the most of it especially on this

celebration of life day

Okay, today's teaser quote from the book

review is these things have literally

revolutionized my life.

I'm a totally different man

happier man a

richer man richer in

friendships and happiness

In quote and as usual we'll unpack that

here in just a few minutes

during the book review segment

But first let's jump into our usual dose

of fun and historic facts

from this day in history

Today's news facts are for January 22nd

We're gonna start in

1943 when on this day

We saw the world record set for the

fastest temperature change

Now the fastest temperature change

recorded in history occurred on this day

in Spearfish, South Dakota

The temperature increased from negative 4

degrees Fahrenheit to positive

45 degrees Fahrenheit and get this it

happened in the span of two minutes just

two minutes set a

world record for that in

1970 as hard as it is

to believe the Boeing

747 took off for the very first scheduled

flight. It was a Pan Am jumbo jet that

flew from New York to London in

1973 in a landmark decision the US

Supreme Court legalized most abortions.

That was Roe v. Wade and

In 1983 and this is one I didn't realize

but after nearly two years

of already being on the air

MTV they began broadcasting

to the west coast of America in

1992 serving as a payload specialist

aboard the Discovery Space Shuttle

Roberta Bond are became the first

Canadian woman and the first neurologist

to travel into space in

1998 one of the most notorious domestic

terrorists in US history

Ted Kaczynski you remember him

He was the so-called unibomber. Well, he

was sentenced to four terms of life in

prison without parole in

2008 and this is a sad one

but this is the day that Heath Ledger

passed away of a drug

overdose at the age of 28 and

Lastly in 2010 struggling

with ratings Conan O'Brien

He left the Tonight Show after hosting

his last episode of the

late-night television program

And if you remember Conan went on to host

his own show Conan on

TBS for the next 11 years

Okay, let's move on to birthdays. Happy

birthday. If today is your birthday you

share a birthday with Bill Bixby

He was born in 1934

Now you might remember him and I

definitely know I remember Bill as he

played dr. David Banner on the Incredible

Hulk television series

That started I think back in the 1970s

Caitlin Clark, she's 23 today and DJ

Jazzy Jeff. He's 60 today

Okay, let's go ahead and turn to the

music in the movies of

the 80s 90s and 2000s

the number one song on this date in

1998 was truly madly deeply by the

Australian band Savage Garden

Now this song was number one for two

weeks and apparently it was the first

song in charts history

To remain in the top 30 for 52 weeks and

it was the most played song in 1997

It also kept the band from becoming the

dreaded one-hit wonder as it was the

follow-up to their previous

number one song to the moon

The band had a total of three number one

hits in the US before breaking up in 2001

And the number one movie on

this date in 1992 was hook

Hook as you might recall was Steven

Spielberg's adaptation of Peter Pan and

it starred Robin Williams Dustin Hoffman

Gwyneth Paltrow Julia Roberts

Interestingly Gwyneth Paltrow and I

didn't remember this but Gwyneth Paltrow

starred as young Wendy in this and it was

only her second movie at

The time apparently Steven

Spielberg is her godfather

Also Julia Roberts role as Tinkerbell it

earned her a razzie nomination for the

worst supporting actress

And it was the first razzie nomination

for a role directed by Spielberg

Hook went on to be nominated for five

Academy Awards, but unfortunately it

wasn't able to take home any wins

Well, let's move on to some personal

growth here in the book review segment of

morning serial as you know

This is where we take a few moments to

reflect on lessons

learned from the current book

We're reading and currently we're reading

through Dale Carnegie's how to win

friends and influence people

It's a timeless book that is consistently

in all the must-read lists and it's

packed with rock solid advice and

Actions for us all to use and build

healthy foundational concepts to live by

We are still in chapter 2 of part 2 and

it's entitled a simple way to

make a good first impression

and it's as simple and as we're learning

as powerful as

starting off with a smile as

Carnegie reminds us throughout the book

when dealing with people

We must be authentic and it's the same

with a smile give a real smile a

heartwarming smile that comes from within

Yesterday we discussed how the smile can

affect other people's decisions

Even when it's not seen as your

enthusiasm and positivity

come through in your voice

Carnegie also reminds us to have a good

time when meeting with people if we want

them to have a good time meeting with us

Now if you'll recall yesterday Carnegie

told us a story about the stockbroker who

decided to implement a

smile in the morning to his wife

After years of just being a morning

grouch and the effect of a consistent

morning smile and greeting

Was bringing more happiness into their

home than they had had in years

Well Carnegie continues his story with

the same stockbroker who implemented this

smile and greeting

outside of his house as well

He'd greet the elevator operator with a

good morning and a smile

He'd greet the doorman with a smile and

he smiled at the cashier in

the subway booth and at work

He'd smile at people on the floor of the

stock exchange that until recently had

never even seen him smile and

The stockbroker said quote I soon found

that everybody was

smiling back at me in quote

People began to come to him with

complaints or grievances

And he found that working with others was

easier when he just

listened and smiled more

This new philosophy was winning him new

friends and changing

attitudes towards him

The stockbroker says he also stopped

criticizing people and instead gave

appreciation and praise

He tried to see the world from others

perspectives and not just

his wants which as you know

And they should sound familiar to you

They are basically the concepts in part

one of this book and Carnegie's principle

number one and number two

Don't criticize condemn or complain and

give honest and sincere appreciation

Now although these changes sound simple

to hear they are indeed

powerful and can change lives

I can see how if someone I knew that was

usually quiet and kind of standoffish if

they implemented these changes

I can definitely see how they could

completely change the

way I view that person and

The stockbroker said this about his life

after making the

consistent and genuine changes

He said quote these things have literally

revolutionized my life

I'm a totally different man happier man a

richer man richer in

friendships and happiness

The only things that

matter much after all in quote

One thing I don't want this book segment

and personal review to

become is to become too

Philosophic or theoretical where we just

talk about things that sound

nice and look good on paper

My hope in Carnegie's hope is that we

really implement tools

that can be life-changing

And although Carnegie is talking about

some fairly simple things here

I would say that in today's world

these principles are needed more than

ever because these principles are not

readily practiced by

the average person in

Carnegie's story of how this stockbroker

found more happiness is

not just fluff and rainbows

It's in line with some of the

best minds of our time as well

Before his death Steve Jobs was said to

have pinned a profound essay on the

lessons he learned from life

And at one point in the

essay Jobs wrote this quote

Don't educate your children to be rich

educate them to be

happy so when they grow up

They will know the value

of things not the price

Also treasure love for your family love

for your spouse love for your friends

Treat yourself well and

cherish others in quote

Sounds similar to what

Carnegie is telling us

My point here is that I don't want to get

lost in this personal growth section with

surface level changes

Carnegie is teaching us how to find more

happiness in life how to make life

altering positive changes and

Along with that will come more success in

our everyday lives and this is in line

with what job said as well

By the way jobs essay is definitely worth

looking up for a quick read

Okay, I'll close today with Carnegie

asking the question. What if you don't

feel like smiling then what?

He says quote two things first force

yourself to smile if you're alone

Force yourself to

whistle or hum a tune or sing

Act as if you were already happy and that

will tend to make you happy in quote

Psychologist William James said quote

action seems to follow feeling but really

action and feelings go together and

By regulating the action which is under

the more direct

control of the will we can

Indirectly regulate the

feeling which is not in quote

They are essentially saying if you need

to jumpstart fake it

until you make it now

You know, I can't leave you with fake it

until you make it. So I'll

quote Carnegie one last time here

He says quote everybody in the world is

seeking happiness and there

is one sure way to find it

That is by controlling your thoughts

Happiness doesn't depend on outward

conditions. It

depends on inner conditions

Quote and that's what we're working on

here real change real

Life-changing change in ourselves and how

we think and in how we act

Well, that seemed pretty heavy for us.

Just talking about some smiling now get

out there kick some butt today

Conquer that big project or personal goal

and meet this day with

energy and determination

Tomorrow we finish chapter 2 of part 2

and we learn Carnegie's second principle
