The Tender Hour

A guided sleep meditation to help you fall asleep, gently voiced by the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna, the oldest named goddess in recorded history. A soft female voice guides you for the first 20 minutes, then over 3 hours of calm music carries you through the night. Tonight you do not have to fight your way into sleep. Inanna, Queen of Heaven and the oldest goddess your people ever named, walks you down through the seven gates of rest, and at each gate she helps you set down one more thing you have been carrying, until you reach the deep, still place where sleep can finally take you. You only have to breathe, and let her keep the watch until morning. This is part of The Goddess Meditations, female-voiced sleep stories from The Tender Hour, each guided by a goddess of old myth. I am Inanna. I am the oldest name your people ever wrote down for a goddess, pressed into wet clay four thousand years ago, and the first story they ever told of me was the story of a descent.

I was Queen of Heaven. I ruled everything that grows and loves and shines under the sun. And one day I chose to go down, away from all of it, down into the Great Below, through seven gates, and at each gate I gave up one more thing I believed I could not live without, until I reached the bottom with nothing left to hold, and was finally, completely still.

That is the journey you make every single night, whether you know it or not. Down out of the bright noise of the day, through gate after gate, setting down everything you carry, until you reach the deep place where sleep can finally take you.

Most nights you fight the descent. Tonight I will walk you down through the gates myself. I know the way. I made it first.

The breath is the first gate, and the only thing any gate ever asks of you is that you pass through without holding on.

Breathe in, and feel how the breath fills you and lifts you.

And breathe out, and feel how easily it goes. The breath does not grieve leaving your body. It goes because going is its nature, and then it returns, every time, without being called.

Again. Breathe in.

And out. Nothing is lost here. Nothing ever is.

Again. Breathe in, slow and deliberate, feeling the chest rise.

And out, feeling the chest fall, and keep falling, heavier with each release.

One more breath in. And all the way out, until you are empty and quiet, and then the breath comes back on its own. It always comes back. You have passed through the first gate. The descent has begun.

Seven gates lie between the bright world and the deep rest below. At each one, I set something down. Not torn from me. Set down, on purpose, because the only way through is to let it go. I will bring you through each one now, slowly. There is no hurry. The gates will wait for you.

The first gate is the crown of your head. Here you lay down the thoughts that have circled since morning. The unfinished tasks. The conversations replayed. The plans for tomorrow that tomorrow can hold instead. Feel the top of your head grow heavy and still. You do not have to think your way through this night. Pass through.

The second gate is your brow and your eyes. Here you lay down all the watching. All the reading of faces, the scanning ahead for what might go wrong. Let the muscles around your eyes go soft. You do not have to see clearly now. Let the world blur, and go dark, and kind. Pass through.

The third gate is your throat. Here you lay down every word you spoke today and every word you swallowed. Let the throat open and rest. You are finished speaking for the night. You are finished holding back what you did not say. Pass through.

The fourth gate is your chest. Here you lay down the things you guard. The tenderness you kept armored all day. Let your heart slow. Let the breath move wide and easy through your ribs. You are safe in here. You do not need the armor where you are going. Pass through.

The fifth gate is your belly. Here you lay down the low hum that lives there, the bracing, the dread, the sense that you have forgotten something or are not doing enough. Let your belly go soft. Let it rise and fall without tightening. There is nothing to brace against in the deep. Pass through.

The sixth gate is your hips and your legs. Here you lay down the readiness to move, to run, to fix, to be needed. Let your hips sink. Let the long bones of your legs grow heavy and stop waiting to carry you somewhere. You are not going anywhere tonight. Pass through.

The seventh gate is the soles of your feet. Here, at the very base of you, you lay down the last of it. The final grip. The last small refusal to let go. Let your feet grow still. Let your whole body grow still. You have passed through all seven gates.

You have arrived at the Great Below.

When I reached the bottom, stripped of everything I had worn and ruled and believed I was, something in me understood why the old tablets call this place holy, and not only fearful.

The Great Below is not death, though my people knew it as death's country. It is the place beneath the self. The place that is still there when everything you call your name, and your work, and your worry, has been laid down at the gates behind you.

In Sumer they knew this was where the grain goes in the cold season, down into the dark earth, not destroyed, only waiting. It is where seeds rest. It is where what has fallen lies quiet until it is ready to rise.

You are there now. Beneath the day. Beneath your name. In the deep still country where everything that rests goes to be made new.

This is the most honest you have been since you woke this morning. No role to hold up. No strength to prove. Only breath, and weight, and a dark that is not empty but full, full of everything that is resting and becoming.

There is nothing to maintain here. No version of yourself to keep upright. No keeping it together, because there is no one to keep it together for, and nothing left that could fall.

Only the breath, rising and falling on its own.

Only the weight of your body, given fully to the bed.

Only the deep dark, holding you the way the earth holds the seed, patient, certain, in no hurry at all.

You have descended all the way. There is nowhere lower to go, and nothing more to release. This is not failure. This is the only ground from which anything has ever risen new. Rest here.

The story does not end in the dark. After the descent comes the return. I rose again, up through the gates, back into the morning, not the same as I went down, changed by the going, and the staying, and the long patience of the deep. You will rise too, when it is time, carrying something from the night that you will never quite be able to name.

But that is the morning's business, and the morning is far away. Right now there is only the going down, and the staying, and the rest. If one thing rose up in you to set down at the gates tonight, you may keep it. Whisper it once, or set it down by candlelight in your own hand, before you sleep.

Let my voice become part of the dark now. Let it grow softer and softer, until it is only a thread of sound, and then let even that go. You do not need a guide anymore. You know the way through all seven gates. You have walked it every night of your life.

Breathe. Sink.

Let the Great Below hold you, the way it has always held everything that trusted it enough to lie down.

Down, and further down, with every breath.

Sleep now. I will be waiting at the gate when you return.
