From The Torch Podcast Network, This is The Chimes Weekly. I’m Matthew Garcia, here to start off your week with major headlines and what’s coming up. It’s Monday, November 17th.

Last Thursday, four schools and a hospital, all in Fullerton, received separate bomb threats from callers. According to Fullerton PD, Troy High School was the first school to receive the threat at approximately 1:25 p.m. Fullerton Union High School was the second school after they got a similar call at 1:49 p.m. Finally, Sunny Hills High School received a threat through their Administration Office at 1:53 p.m. Within 30 minutes, all three high schools located in Fullerton went on lockdown. Fern Drive Elementary became the fourth school at 2:20 p.m., and officers immediately dispatched to the schools.

Lockdowns on each school were finally lifted by 4:17 p.m. However, according to NBC Los Angeles, another threat followed at around 5:40 p.m. at St. Jude Medical Center’s emergency room also in Fullerton. No explosives were found at any of the locations, but Fullerton Police Department continues to investigate the incidents.

The United States ended a 43-day federal government shutdown after a funding bill was signed. Agencies are reopened and federal employees resume work. According to Reuters, Republican Representative David Schweikert of Arizona said in response to the shut down that, quote, “I feel like I just lived a Seinfeld episode. We just spent 40 days and I still don't know what the plotline was,” end quote. The bill passed by a vote of 222-209. Last Tuesday, the U.S. Navy’s largest aircraft carrier entered waters near Latin America as part of an American military buildup in the region. They hope to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is seen by the Trump Administration as an illegitimate leader and linked with drug trafficking. The arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group follows several weeks of U.S. military strikes against alleged drug boats. The legality of the strikes are being debated. The warplanes and guided missile destroyers that make up the carrier group would boost American capabilities of hitting ground targets in Venezuela. However, President Trump has expressed reservations about doing so.

Rain, rain is NOT going to go away after a rainy weekend in Southern California! Heavy rains are going to continue into this week. Evacuation orders were set in place on Friday for residents in the Palisades, Hurst and Sunset through last night due to possibilities for mudslides. However, there are possibilities of more evacuation orders as the rain is going to keep pouring through today and tomorrow and possibly pick up on Friday and Saturday. Put those rain boots on, and stay safe out there.

That’s all for last week’s headlines. Now, let’s dive into what’s happening this week at Biola.

Today, at 7:30pm, the Conservatory of Music will host a free Chamber Ensembles Recital at Lansing Recital Hall. Enjoy an evening of classical chamber music.

Wednesday, the Student Missionary Union will host a campus wide day of prayer. It will kickoff with an AfterDark chapel on Tuesday night and continue throughout Wednesday. There will be an all day prayer tent at Fluor fountain, prayer prompts at the Caf and a prayer room in the middle SUB. Everyone is invited to join in on the activities.

Also this Wednesday, look out for Music at Noon: Jazz & Guitar Combos hosted by the Conservatory of Music. The event takes place at Lansing Recital Hall and is free to attend.

Biola Theatre presents an entirely student-run show, “They're Getting Married Again?”, written by senior Kaylin Kenders & Biola alumn Joshua Labata. The play tells the story of Avery and Madison, a couple who are renewing their vows. The show starts off ninety minutes before the wedding as the maid of honor, Evelyn Adler, tries to pull everything together. Tickets for the show are only $5 for Biola students and will be shown this Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
