The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A trip to Sri Lanka awaits as we rock the tunes recent & less so on our audio trip to the Indian Ocean tonight! Dunia Aljawad joins us to play cuts from inside Sri Lanka and from the island's extended population abroad.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 12, 2022.  Tonight we take another audio tour on our Round Trip weekly with Dunia Aljawad, and our destination is Sri Lanka.  The famed island southeast of India has seen more than its fair share of problems, but the music never stops even when the refugees from said trouble find new homes abroad, many of which like M.I.A., Priya Ragu, and others have become household names.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on a crisp after rain gorgeous spring day, and it is time for you to come fly with us on The Drop this evening. This is Danno so it goes each & every night from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight we head for an island off the southeast coast of India that has had more than its fair share of civil strife and unrest over the years, but is still a beautiful place with a diverse array of amazing people, and that would be Sri Lanka. Dunia Aljawad will be in the studio for takeoff as part 3 begins, but for now we head to NYC as the doors opened to studio 54 on this date, and we’ll talk about a little bit of the background after we love to love, which we love. This is The Drop.
Tina Charles – I Love to Love

The Drop has officially boarded the VIP bus for the airport this evening on this Round Trip Wednesday night. What’s up, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju ready for this week’s flight to Sri Lanka.
An amazing place on the world map, and one I’ve always wanted to visit although I haven’t gotten the chance. Incredibly beautiful country filled with amazing people who are spread all around the world, especially the island’s Tamil people, and we’ll talk about some of the wonder and troubles the island has gone through over the years when Dunia Aljawad joins us aboard flight TD071.
Now we just started with Tina Charles and I Love to Love, as it was on yesterday in 1977 that one of if not the most famous club of all time opened in Manhattan. Studio 54 went into business with a huge opening gala, and during its years of operation would welcome the biggest of the big names as both patrons and performers from Diana Ross to Michael Jackson to Cher to Elton John and on and on and on.
If anything represents the heights of the disco era at the time, it’d be hard to beat Studio 54 for being the perfect encapsulation of the commercial heights. Just like disco, it was a short run, with the original owners closing the joint in 1980 for tax evasion. Although later sold a couple of times and reopened, it was never the same, and permanently shuttered in 1986.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So, let’s keep it dance-oriented here in the first block of cuts as we continue to head to the airport for our flight to Sri Lanka this evening. Up next we have a pair of tunes from Jungle, the first featuring Priya Ragu, and then we’ll close with a band called The Soul, if that’s not existential enough for ya. We’ll talk about all three after the triangle is complete, but for now This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Colombo.
_________

Back on The Drop just about to pull up to the terminal for check-in on this Round Trip Wednesday evening. Dunia Aljawad joins us as we take off on flight TD071 starting in the 2nd hour of programming, and got in a trio of dance-friendly cuts to start the Sri Lankan vibery for tonight’s first hour warm-up...
Jungle feat Priya Ragu – Goodbye My Love (…this song featured on the latest album from the UK deepness duo Loving In Stereo, which came out last year. Priya Ragu is the tie-in as far as Sri Lanka and the Tamil people go, but we’ll talk more about the artist in hour 2.)
Jungle – Beat 54 (All Good Now) (…with the studio 54 history we opened with, I couldn’t resist playing this one tonight. This was on Jungle’s previous album Forever from 2018, and interestingly, the band imagined this tune as a love letter read out on a post-apocalyptic radio show.)
The Soul – Sticky Like Glue (…this is a quintet based in the capital city of Colombo that describes themselves as “genre-fluid.” An interesting mix of funk, soul, electronica, and jazz to be found in their sound, amongst other influences, with a message about the perils of political violence and war almost always present. Good, positive stuff from a rising and very talented group out of Colombo.)
Okay, so moving ahead we’ll keep up the beat to finish the first part with feet moving before we go a good bit more lo-fi for the 2nd stanza. On deck we have Eve Alai and Senara on a tune that is literally called Divine_Demo.wav and we’ll finish with Baila Curry and something with more rock and punk edge called Break Free. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Sri Lanka.
Eve Alai feat Senara – Divine_Demo.wav
Baila Curry – Break Free

II.
The Drop has arrived at the terminal and of course we’re just standing in line . Danno here and ready to fly off to Colombo Sri Lanka on this week’s Round Trip with Dunia Aljawad, and we just started with some lo-fi beats for the cold opening of the 2nd stanza as we warm up our visit to the famed but quite troubled island off the south coast of India. Let’s get to the story with those first couple of tunes for now, that was…
Kehard feat Imfinenow & Hypx – sick of love (…this is a tune from last year that was a standalone single. Not much on the artist to speak of aside from “Call Me K,” which is the entirety of the bio.)
Arnon Ray Pereira – Slow (…this is an artist that’s based in Colombo and is just starting out over the past year or two. Do check some of Pereira’s other stuff, it’s pretty solid, with the artist making good headway just shy of their 30th birthday next month.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So moving up in the line and hopefully on our way to security soon, we’ll keep it in the dreamy downtempo lofi realm with cuts up next from 1RSH4D, Murandu, and suntandy, all of which we’ll talk a bit about after we let them soothe us through customs. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Sri Lanka.
_________
The Drop has finally reached the boarding gate after the usual crazy getting by security, but thankfully arrived for departure we have. Danno here about to get on the plane for Sri Lanka this evening, and we’ll see Dunia Aljawad shortly on the plane. For now, let’s run down those three slow burners we just lit…
1RSH4D – The 5th House (…this is an artist there’s not much info about, but the producer and MC seems to split time between Dubai and Sri Lanka. Definitely a big believer in the NFT’s if you check the vibe on the socials, and this cut dropped last year as a standalone single (point out spelling).)
Murandu – I follow the music (…another Sri Lankan artist just making their way in the world with a handful of tunes and very little as far as bio, this is a great tune with the artist talking about following the music always and getting blissfully lost.)
sundotandy – Through You the Flowers Bloom (…this is an artist named Andrew Sun. Sun started in music just as a hobby, but realized it could be a good vehicle for expressing his love for The Lord, although I gotta say this tune is rather clever as without the background info it just sounds like a brilliantly worded romantic song.)
So, that was final call to board rattling the air in about 8 different languages so I would say that’s us so we gotta jet. We’ll finish with a pair of tunes tonight with Anthony Mutharajah and Herman Ramanado up next with a jazzy joint called All The Little Things, and we’ll finish with Sandun Athulathmudali and a cut called Zero Pain, although I’m sure that’s not the status of any Sri Lankan ears that listened to me flub those last few names. THIS is The Drop on our way to Sri Lanka and it’s halftime.
Anthony Mutharajah feat Herman Ramanado – All The Little Things
Sandun Athulathmudali – Zero Pain
