Welcome to the AHRN Minute. My name is Jenny Nielsen, and today we’re talking about Overseas Housing Allowance, or OHA, and what you need to know before moving overseas.
OHA helps active-duty service members cover housing costs at overseas duty stations, replacing Basic Allowance for Housing, or BAH. Unlike BAH, which provides a fixed monthly allowance, OHA reimburses your actual rent up to a location-specific limit.
OHA also includes a monthly allowance for utilities and recurring maintenance, plus a one-time Move-In Housing Allowance to help cover certain relocation expenses.
To make the most of your benefits, keep every receipt, submit your lease and paperwork early, and check the current rates for your destination before signing a lease. Remember, rent reimbursements are capped, so costs above your limit may come out of pocket.
Knowing how OHA works can help you prepare for your move and avoid unexpected expenses.
That’s your AHRN Minute, and thanks for listening!
